Welcome to Proper Mental episode 80 with SK Shlomo who is an award-winning beatboxer, DJ and theatre maker.                                                                                                                                                   They are a classically trained percussionist who started drumming at the age of 8 and discovered the art of beatboxing in his teens. They would go on to win countless competitions and awards and would become known for their ground-breaking, original techniques before crossing over to mainstream attention with a collaboration with Bjork in 2004. Shlo spent years travelling the world, performing their own music, and working with the likes of Ed Sheeran, DJ Yoda, Jarvis Cocker and Rudimental. It was only when they took a break from touring to work on a solo record that they started to experience issues with their mental health that would eventually lead to depression, suicidal thoughts and a diagnosis of PTSD. Shlomo and I talk about distraction and how they learned to be quiet with themself.  We chat about acceptance, negative self-talk and positive affirmation and we talk about being vulnerable and living authentically. Shlo is currently rehearsing Breathe, a play about their experiences with mental health, that becomes a celebratory rave and it just sounds incredible! This is one of the deepest and most powerful conversations I've had to date.  We jump straight in to the big stuff from the off and listening to Shlomo talk about their journey of self-discovery and acceptance was inspiring and beautiful. Waffle On about Ask a Policeman Hello and welcome to this months edition of Waffle On and boy do we have a old classic for you. This is the oldest film we have covered. Ask a Policeman was released in 1939 and starred famous British comedy actor Will Hay. Both Meds and Kell are passionate about black and white films and they hope this comes across (in true waffle style) in this episode. We have a clip and a very brief review from a young person as well as a little tune (by DJ Yoda) at the end. Episode 89: DJ YODA On this week’s episode of the @RoadPodcast, the fellas sit down with UK’s very own @DJYodaUK. Yoda speaks about spinning 90’s Hip-Hop parties while attending the @UniversityOfWarwick (6:27), his early days working at @FatLaceMagazine and his “How To Cut & Paste” Mixtape Series (19:00). He recalls making a lot of American Music Industry contacts from his club residency at “Spread Love” (24:44) and expresses how huge the 90’s reggae/dancehall music is in the UK to this day (30:00). Yoda explains why he refuses to play Drake (@champagnepapi) or Rihanna (@badgalriri) during his sets (41:15), how he acquired opportunities to DJ @StarWars movie premieres because of his DJ name and how he knew @Banksy before the fame and actually got paid with an original piece (44:40). He speaks about using the @Phase_DJ (58:50) and helping design for @pioneerdjglobal but preferring turntables over their CDJ’s (1:08:02). Yoda shares his love for collecting breakfast cereal boxes and trading with Hip-Hop legend and notorious collector @OfficialBizMarkie (1:15:10). Lastly he talks about recording his new album “Homecooking” at the infamous @AbbeyRoadStudios as well as @IAmMarkRonson’s studio (1:32:50) and expands on the UK Grime music scene (1:44:10).
