This week we finally get to talk about the indie horror sensation TERRIFIER 2. What was supposed to be a one-night theatrical event went on to become one of the most successful independent horror movies of all time as audiences could not get enough of Art the Clown's return. This time our master of mayhem in greasepaint isn't alone as he's joined by a demonic sidekick in The Pale Girl, while also getting a worthy adversary in Sienna Shaw, played wonderfully by Laura LaVera. Damien Leone upped the ante in not only the gore, but also added more lore, mythology, and backstory to Art this time around. The end result is an audacious slasher that pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable for cinemas with a multitude of some of the sickest deaths committed on screen, including one that is still talked about two years later as one of the nastiest yet most crowd pleasing kills in horror history. For the first part of our two part episode, Mike is joined by Nichole Goble, Ari Hellraiser, and Brian Keiper an we talk about why we loved this movie in all its bloody, gloopy, sticky glory. So head on down to the Clown Cafe, pour yourself a bowl of Art Crispies and enjoy this in depth discussion of Terrifier 2. This week we embark on a new cinematic journey and for the first time we travel back to one of the foundations of horror as we begin our exploration of the Frankenstein franchise. Adapted from the classic novel by Mary Shelley, James Whale created one of the true masterpieces of early horror cinema. Alongside Dracula, Frankenstein demonstrated that genre films could not only be artistic masterpieces but proved such box office successes that they could keep studios afloat. For the first of our two episodes on the original Frankenstein movie Mike is joined by Brian Keiper and Devaughn Taylor in the co-host chairs along with special guest Garrett McDowell who is Devaughn's cohost on the Spector Cinema pod. On this episode we talk about our personal histories with the Universal Monsters and relationship with Frankenstein and why Frankenstein called to us during our formative journeys as budding horror fans. After that Brian and Mike discuss the long and laborious road Frankenstein took to the silver screen. From a twenty-one-year-old nepo-baby, Carl Laemmelle Jr, getting handed the keys to Universal and making monster movies when no one else believed in them to an unknown journeyman named Boris becoming one of the first icons of horror, it's a fascinating trip to the screen. Join us for part two in a few days as DeVaughn and Garrett return to discuss their thoughts on the film as a whole. Please read Brian's "Faces of Frankenstein: The Innovation and Influence of James Whale's Frankenstein" or more information on this seminal film. It's the fifth Thursday of the month which means we're doing something a little out of the box for this week's show. We're taking this opportunity to spotlight our dear friends Brian Keiper and Michele Eggen at the MOVIES FOR LIFE podcast. The two friends run a lovely podcast that mixes sharp critiques with an absolute heart-on-the-sleeve love for all things cinema. Mike was fortunate enough to join them recently and we talked about one of his favorite movies of all time, ROCKY. This classic story about the proverbial underdog that just wanted his one shot to prove himself has reverberated with audiences for almost five decades, across two franchises. We talk about the behind the scenes drama that went into creating this story, how it's one of the greatest romances of all time and why it still leaves audiences cheering today. EVIL DIES TONIGHT! We return to Haddonfield to start wrapping up our episodes on Halloween. This week we look back at a movie that sharply divided fans, Halloween Kills. Is it an over the top slasher that delivers some of the goriest entries in the entire series? Absolutely. Does it dip its toes into social commentary regarding mob rule, cancel culture and our inability as a society to think rationally in heightened situations in the most ham-fisted and convoluted ways imaginable? Yes it does. We look at these topics, the mixed messages on how this one defines The Shape as more than a man, and whether the lesser reputation of Kills retroactively damaged fans' feelings about the 2018 entry Mike is joined by Brian Keiper and Michele Eggen of the Movies For Life podcast for a spirited discussion.
"I think you know what I'm gettin' at, Mr. President. We're gonna kill us a mummy." It's time to talk about the 60th anniversary of a thriller; a movie about a man with a disturbing secret he is trying to hide – and NO it's not “Psycho”. This week we are discussing the Michael Powell film “Peeping Tom” with guest & film columnist Brian Keiper. During the episode our crew discusses the championing of this film by Martin Scorsese, the initial backlash this film received, and if Carl Boehm was the right choice for our lead. However, not everyone enjoyed this film -but who was it??? Also, this week Brian recommends “One Cut of the Dead” (available on Shudder), Adam recommends “The Staircase” (available on Netflix), and Ian recommends “Nightcrawler” (available to rent on most major platforms).
On June 30th four podcasters set out to break down the greatest horror movie ever made. What happened to them is tragic, even more so because they were young. This fifth Thursday Jenn, Lara and Mike are taking a much needed break. For listeners of both shows, this is a double dip as Mike is presenting the uncut version of his latest Pod and the Pendulum episode. Along with regulars Brian Keiper, Devaughn Taylor and guest Nichole Goble, Mike tackles Tobe Hooper's classic from top to bottom. From an exploration to the social, economic, and political climate that influenced the making of the film; to reimagining the stench, sweat and bloodshed that went on in front of and behind the scenes; tackling whether Franklin is annoying or misunderstood; to why this holds up almost fifty years later; no armadillo is left unturned. So grab yourself a bowl or beefy, meaty chili and settle in for a hell of a road trip. Be sure to go to www.podandthependulum.com for our complete archives of nearly 150 episodes. The second half of our discussion gets to the good stuff. We talk about the most iconic introduction of a horror villain ever committed to the big screen, the insanity of the dinner party, have it out over Franklin, discuss the social, economic, and political factors that influenced the making of this movie and examine its legacy. With guests Brian Keiper, Devaughn Taylor and Nichole Goble. If you haven't already, go back and check out part one.

We're back, Scaredy Cats! It's time to take on one of the most influential, but also weirdest horror movies of all time, Dario Argento's 1977 classic, Suspiria. It was followed by Inferno in 1980 and The Mother of Tears in 2007. The three movies make up the “The Three Mothers” trilogy which tells the tale of the Mothers of Sorrow, three witches who wreak evil havoc on the world. The narrative of Suspiria is incidental; it's the visuals and the score that make Suspiria the legend that it is. So, grab yourself some red wine, and sit back because this is going to be a wild ride. For this episode, the werewolf squad reunites, but this time it's all about witches. You know that we're going to work some werewolf hijinks into the episode! The first double-guest episode of CMP brings the hosts of Movies for Life, Michele Eggen and Brian Keiper, to the show this week to discuss Stanley Kubrick's 1956 noir heist film The Killing. We discuss how this stands up to the rest of Kubrick's filmography, what brings it its cult status, and we wrap things up, of course, with pairing recommendations. Head to ColumbusvHughes.com for extensive show notes and links to all of Michele and Brian's endeavors.
Hey Scaredy Cats. The eighties were all about the werewolf movie. You had Teen Wolf, Full Moon High, Teen Wolf Too, The Company of Wolves, and Silver Bullet. There was one year that beat them all. With not one, but three werewolf movies coming out, 1981 was a banner year if you liked to howl at the moon. There was Howlen, An American Werewolf In London and the movie we’re going to talk about today, The Howling. Joining the pack to discuss the Howling are return guests, Jessica and Brian. Jessica has written articles for Film Cred, Nightmarish Conjurings and Grim, has a podcast called Monster Books Podcast, and has a horror comics column on Daily Grindhouse. Brian Keiper is a regular contributor to Bloody Disgusting, Manor Vellum and Council of Zoom and co-host of the Movies for Life Podcast. Hey Scaredy Cats. Once I got into horror, there was one movie that I purposely avoided watching because the sheer idea of it scared me. Once I finally got up the nerve to watch it, I was terrified. That movie? The Exorcist. The first horror film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, it was nominated for nine other Academy Awards, eventually winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. It’s one of those movies that are rumoured to be cursed and when it was released in theatres, there were reports of heart attacks and miscarriages. On top of all of that, evangelist Billy Graham claimed a real demon lived in the celluloid reels of the movie. It’s a beautiful day for an exorcism, so join us as we fight the forces of evil. Joining us for this episode are some devilishly good guests! From the podcast, I Hate Your Taste in Movies, avowed non-horror fan Austin Lamarche.
