The whimsical title of this blog post is based on the 1969 book by David Reuben entitled Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask). I chose the title because although the Church has its own teaching about sexuality, many young Orthodox Christians are afraid to inquire diligently about it for fear the Church will give unwelcome advice. Which of course it will.

Ep #296 - Hope in the Uncertainty - An Interview with Medium, Hollister Rand  I am so excited to share this fun and insightful conversation of Empowering Chats with my guest Hollister Rand. All of my circuits are lit up. Hollister is a medium and the author of, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Afterlife but were Afraid to Ask.” In this chat, Hollister and I dive into interesting topics and this new state of awareness of how we live, not only here but in the afterlife.  I received Hollister's book as a gift from one of my students and after reading it I knew I had to have her on Empowering Chats. She describes the difference between Mediums and Psychics as follows: Mediums and Psychics can often get the same kinds of information but the source is different. Psychics get their information from people, places and things here on this earth plan. Whereas Mediums connect with spirits, spirit guides, angels, pets and those that have passed on to the other side. Hollister believes that more of our ancestors are making themselves known to people now because we are reaching out more and doing the ask. And having organizations like Ancestry.com and 23 and Me gives us the tools we need to reach out. And for this reason, Hollister believes tribes and more ancestors are showing up in the spirit world and making themselves known to loved ones on earth's plane. Hollister also shares that when you are aligned with spirit you don't have to figure out your life. The strategy for your life changes. Her direct quote is to “Live in confidence of the next step.” It's not about knowing it's about having the confidence to take the next step. Hope lies in the uncertainty. This is a direct message that Hollister received from spirit.  This is where the best can happen by allowing the possibilities to present themselves and not limiting ourselves by our own self-doubt. Hollister calls this place of all possibilities “The Place of No Fragments.” And I'd like to share a quote from her book that supports the place of no fragments: “A place where everything fits together, where it all makes sense, where we not only see the big picture but are also an integral part of it. Sounds as though this oneness is what spirits want to share with us. One puzzle piece at a time.” Ultimately Hollister feels that love is the answer. We have heard it so many times. And this is a love that we are only beginning to understand, the love of self. Because only from that spring of self-love can we spread love to everyone else on this planet. This week's show is with Be Mythical co-founders, Lian Brook-Tyler and Jonathan Wilkinson. In this conversation, a special 10-year episode of the podcast, Lian and Jonathan reflect on their journey, including the deep unfolding of the show itself, and answer listener questions posed to each of them. They discuss the organic and spontaneous nature of starting the podcast and the importance of trusting their intuition, the dedication and vision it has taken to be consistent over so many years. The personal and thought-provoking questions they asked and answered were: If you had to drop all your different practices and only keep one - what would it be and why? Looking back on the past 10 years, what are you most proud of? And is there anything you regret or would like to have done differently? If you could give one piece of guidance to a young man who is struggling with life, what would it be? What is something about you that you've rarely or never spoken about publicly before that you feel ready to speak about now? If you could go back in time 10 years ago and tell yourself something at the outset of this podcasting journey what would that be? If you could whisper into everyone's ear in the world at the same time in whatever their language is what would that be? What was the most powerful experience of your life? Where is the most magical place you have been? If you were trapped on a desert island what one item, spiritual or not, would you bring? In responding to these questions, Jonathan and Lian talked about the power of vision quests and the impact they can have on personal growth and maturity, the concept of mirrors and how they can provide deep self-reflection, finding beauty in suffering, and the magic of the English land. The conversation concludes with a powerful message of love and self-discovery. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Looking back on the reason the podcast began shows the importance of trusting intuition and following the organic and spontaneous nudges that show up along the way. Many of their answers came back to the importance of self-discovery and the different ways we can walk the path of knowing thyself And now a question for you, the listener, imagine if you could be transported in time to a decade into the future and take a look at your future self, living your own soul's truth… What would you see? And what does that require of you now? Resources and stuff that we spoke about: Join UNIO, the Academy of Sacred Union. In the aftermath of Donald Trump's felony conviction for fraud, his followers scrambled to be first to reaffirm their fealty to the twice-impeached Republican. But for some reason, Trump's new status as a convict also was accompanied by a resurgence of stories about another right-wing figure—Elon Musk—and their warming relationship.  Bloomberg has reported on how Musk is advising the presumptive GOP presidential candidate on all things crypto (maybe Dogecoin?), and the Wall Street Journal has related details about their time together in Florida—as well as the Tesla chief executive's potential role in a second Trump administration. Bloomberg's national politics correspondent Nancy Cook joins Max Chafkin and Kurt Wagner to talk about all of this. "You've now seen one, then you do one, and then after a year of being President, you get to teach one." Past President Miriam Patanian answers everything you always wanted to know about how UUMAN is governed but were (maybe!) afraid to ask. She also shares how she came to "find our tribe" here in Georgia, why she felt called to this three year tour of duty, and what it how it was to be "unchurched" as an adult, after some years of being "Christmas and Easter-type Catholics." And, of course, some thoughts on how her experience with the Our Whole Lives program shapes her vision of the future for what we call "sex education" in the public sphere. Were her kids' experience with GA Public Schools' attempts to educate about sexual health quite as cringeworthy-slash-ignorant as one might imagine? Sorry, no spoilers here, you'll have to listen to find out. Intro and outro background music by Tim Moor at Pixabay. Halloween is an odd event—very odd, in a way, because in its origins it was not evil; it was actually good. A number of you probably know that “Halloween” is “All Hallows Even”; in other words, All Hallows Eve—the evening before All Hallows. And “All Hallows” is All Saints day. And, originally, All Saints Day (November 1st) was the day when all the saints were honored. In other words, it's a time that the Church had set aside to honor those people who had lived exemplary lives, who had blessed others by their lives, and were considered saints by the Church at that time.October 31st, though, among non-Christian Celtic people, was a different matter altogether. It was the festival of Samhain. What you may not know is the fact it was also New Year's Eve in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon England at that time. It was actually the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. It took place in the autumn, as a matter of fact. It was an occasion for fire festivals, they lit huge bonfires on top of hills to frighten off the evil spirits, and also it was a time when laws and land tenures were renewed. It harkens back, in a way, to the Old Testament. You'll recall where, in the year of release, all the captives were released. People who have been enslaved because of having been a thief and caught and sold into slavery were turned loose, in the seventh year. That was always in the autumn, not in the spring. In that Jubilee year, all the land again went back to its original family owner—the one who received it by lot. Here they had, in the autumn, a time when all the laws and land tenures were renewed. In the Celtic religions, the dead were supposed to visit their homes on this night. As a consequence, you get the sinister aspects of the festival. And, of course, you had the Celtic Church right alongside of the Roman Church; and the gradual melding that took place in these things over time created something along the lines of Halloween. And though it really became in later times a secular holiday, at the same time it has also retained a lot of those sinister overtones.“Halloween was thought to be the most favorable time for divinations, for marriage, for health, for death, and for luck. And it was the only day when the help of the devil was invoked in such matters.” I think that is fascinating. For people who call themselves Christians—who are believers in Christ, people who try to serve God—you can almost see how it would be tempting, in certain circumstances (and I want to talk about that a little later), to get some guidance from that side of the spirit world.Halloween is a night of great evil. But really, it's a night of great evil only because the devil is invoked in some of the customs and some of the practices. If it were nothing but a harvest festival, it probably wouldn't amount to much. The question is: Is there really a devil, and are there demons in a spirit world that come out on Halloween or at other times? I recently received a letter from a long-time correspondent, and he had what I think is easily the most comprehensive set of questions about the spirit world and the paranormal that I have ever received in my life. I mean, to answer it would require me to write a book, “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Spirit World But Were Afraid To Ask”. And he gave me a really good list. He asked me about spirit sightings, dreams that come true, UFOs, abductions, strange lights, hauntings, healings, psychics, miracles that seem to have nothing to do with God and yet are miracles, and a whole long list. And he asked that, somewhere along the line, I would do a sermon or a tape or something on the subject. And so you owe this sermon today to my friend who wrote to me about this.

“Does Medicare cover assisted living?” is a common question Lori Williams gets as a senior living professional. Since Medicare functions as health insurance and doesn't cover senior living, she welcomes an expert back to the show to share what it does cover. You'll get a simple overview of the Medicare puzzle from June Kim, a community relations specialist with BlueCross BlueShield of Texas. With Medicare enrollment October 15 through December 7, it's a great time to learn - though it's always helpful to understand what you're getting into! She'll answer common questions like: ·What is Medicare Part A, B, C and D? · What's a Medicare supplement? What about Medicare Advantage? · I'm still employed - should I enroll in Medicare? · How much does it cost? · Where do I enroll? If you need to learn the basics of Medicare or just need a refresher, this is a great place to start. Plus, you'll also be aware of what changes are coming. Takeaways from this episode: -Enroll for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) once you turn 65 - even if you're still employed. You've already paid into it, so it's free. -Only enroll in Part B when you're fully retired because your employer may already offer health insurance coverage. -You can't be on Medicare Part A and B (traditional Medicare) without a drug plan - Part D. -Medicare covers 80% of the costs, and you'll have to pay the last 20% out of pocket unless you have Medicare Supplement insurance. -Medicare Part C is an “all in one” plan run by private insurance companies. You wouldn't get Part A, B or D if you already have Medicare Advantage, nor could you get a supplement. -You must be reasonably healthy to qualify for a Medicare supplement, and costs vary according to lifestyle. The older you get, the more expensive it is. -Medicare Part C is like an HMO health insurance plan; whereas Medicare A and B are like a PPO. - If you have Medicare Part A, B and D, and supplement insurance, you can use your Medicare in all 50 states - any doctor and any hospital that takes Medicare, with little to no out-of-pocket expenses. -Choosing the plan for you comes down to many factors including network and resources. What's most important is that you understand the plan you choose. Resources mentioned in this episode: Medicare details about enrollment for 2023: *Note: Part B premiums may increase Open enrollment period is 10/15/22 - 12/7/22 New Plan is effective on 1/1/23 12. LS Power Senior Vice President Sharon Segner discusses the multibillion-dollar stakes involved in the arcane dispute before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission over ROFR, or right of first refusal. FERC has proposed to allow incumbent monopoly utilities first crack at building the vast new network of transmission lines that must be constructed in order to transition to a clean-energy grid and economy. There would be no competing bids to determine if the utility build is the least-cost option, and under monopoly regulation the utility receives the full cost of the build, plus a generous rate of return. Then when the utility build goes grossly over budget, the monopoly utility goes back to the state regulatory commission for full cost recovery plus that generous rate of return. There's no opportunity for a competitive process to determine if the utility build  is the least-cost option.Or, as Segner notes, "What FERC has teed up here is, should the clean-energy transition be a clean-energy monopoly or should it be competitive?"Segner's company is the plaintiff in one of two conflicting U.S. appeals court rulings directly addressing the concept of ROFR under FERC regulation. LS Power was rebuffed by the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in its constitutional challenge to ROFR in Minnesota. But utility giant NextEra Energy prevailed in its challenge to ROFR in Texas, where the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals strongly supported NextEra's and LS Power's assertion that such laws are unconstitutional due to a legal principle known as the Dormant Interstate Commerce clause. The conflicting court opinions would appear to make the issue ripe for appeal to the Supreme Court with its newly dominant conservative supermajority in place. We try to unpack it all for you.Support the show

Robert Johnston was a Marine and that is where he honed his skills at waging war in the cyber dimension - and you better believe that is where a lot of warfare now happens, from Russia knocking out ATMs in neighboring countries through nation state hackers targeting financial institutions, both to fuel widespread anxiety and simply to plunder others' money.Johnston has a pedigree at this. He led the investigation into the Russian Intelligence Service breach of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and before that he worked on the hack of the Joint Chiefs of Staff email in 2015. That is cyber war at its highest levels.Nowadays Johnston and Adlumin, the company he co-founded and where he serves as CEO, is an active player in helping credit unions in particular bolster their cyber security and that means dealing with everything from Denial of Service Attacks (DDos) through Ransomware, which is today's flavor of the moment. Along the way Johnston also works with helping credit unions stay compliant with cybersecurity requirements set out by the regulator and they are voluminous. It's a fast changing field and in this podcast Johnston gives a glimpse into its challenges and its excitement.Think of this podcast's subtitle as Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Cybersecurity But Were Afraid to Ask.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Rate of Return

Having been in the financial services industry since 2000, I've noticed that almost all investment product companies (mutual funds, ETFs, stock market indices, variable annuities, closed-end funds, REITs) love to cite their “average annual rate of return” figures which always inflate what the particular investment actually returned to its investors. And it really bothers me. 2+2 always equals 4...except on Wall St. This problem isn't complicated nor is it really nuanced in any particular way,(as the investment industry would have you believe) it really comes down to basic math. Average annual return, as is always stated in investment literature, (marketing pieces, prospectuses, etc.) is simply a deliberate shell game meant to confuse your perception of the returns by stating simple arithmetic mean calculations when the only return that matters is the compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Now, I know it sounds like I'm splitting hairs here but hang with me through an example and you'll understand my beef. Example :  Let's say that Bill invests $100,000  into his investment account at J.T. Marlin (some of you may get the Boiler Room reference) and for the 1st year  his account grew by 25%  but the account  returned a negative 25% the second year. The stock market muppets would say your average return is 0%...and they'd be telling the truth…in the same vain that President Clinton swore he did not have sex with that woman. But they are clouding the truth with nonsense--because who cares what your average rate of return was? Year 1—   100,000 x     25% =    125,000 Year 2—  125,000 x (-25%) =    93,750 If Bill started with 100k and now at the end of year two his account is worth $93,750 his actual compound annual growth rate (cagr) was -6.25%. But didn't I prove in the example that his average annual rate of return was 0%? Then, how can Bill have less money than what he started with? Welcome to the wonderful world of investments and the Imagineers of Wall St. I actually found this little tidbit online when looking around to see what others were talking about in regard to CAGR. Investopedia.com says: “CAGR isn't the actual return in reality. It's an imaginary number that describes the rate at which an investment would have grown if it grew at a steady rate. You can think of CAGR as a way to smooth out the returns.” Honestly, I'm speechless. The Enron accountants have obviously taken up residence on Wall Street and are firmly rooted in content publishing for the financial media. I beg to differ with Investopedia… ___________________________________ We are in the business of helping our clients find the right cash value life insurance to fit their financial goals, if you'd like to discuss that with us, please click here and send us a message.

In Part I, CERN physicist Steven Goldfarb attempted to explain to Bob the difference between leptons, muons, and quarks. In Part II, Goldfarb tackles a thornier question: In this age of so much disinformation, when scientific fact seems to carry no more weight than opinion, does science even matter? Plus: A very special epilogue. Get full access to Bully Pulpit at bullypulpit.substack.com/subscribe

Do you know what a lepton is? A muon? A quark? A boson? Bob can't even grasp the Facebook terms of service, but he found a particle physicist who both understands the nature of matter and was willing to explain it to him. Or try, anyway. Joining Bob for the first of a two-part conversation is Steven Goldfarb, a physicist at the University of Melbourne working on the ATLAS Experiment at CERN — the European particle physics consortium that operates the world's biggest particle accelerator near Geneva, Switzerland.
