Despite the critical success of some of these offerings, and some high-profile wins and nominations, none of these films were financially successful thanks to Cannon's hapless marketing strategies and their bad reputation within the film industry (including staggering money losses, a shareholder revolt and an SEC investigation into their accounting practices). Cannon would file for bankruptcy by the end of the eighties. We discuss 5 of these prestige projects: the dark journalism thriller Street Smart (which Cannon financed for Christopher Reeve in exchange for starring in Superman IV and the film that put Morgan Freeman on the map), Andrei Konchalovsky's masterful Runaway Train (the best film the studio ever made) and his followup, the American gothic drama Shy People (an award winner at Cannes which vanished without a trace), Nicolas Roeg's Castaway (the film Oliver Reed was promoting the night he almost beat up David Letterman), and Barbet Schroeder's black comedy about alcoholism Barfly with Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb Podcast. This is the podcast where we re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history. Oh man, do we have a treat for you! This week's show is all about Cannon films, and you can't talk about Cannon without Austin Trunick. Austin is the author of two excellent retrospective books - The Cannon Film Guide: Vol 1 and 2. If you have ever wanted to know something about Cannon Films, Austin is the guy to talk to. While Cannon created a ton of cult favorites, they also dipped their toes into some prestige storytelling. We decided to go a bit more “highbrow” with this week's choice and are discussing 1985's Runaway Train. This Academy Award nominated film started as a screenplay by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and was passed around by several Hollywood executives. The story of two escaped convicts who become stuck on a…you guessed it…runaway train finally found a home with Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. Austin brings so much insight to this film and we are super excited he joined us for this week's conversation. So, sit back, relax, and learn all about one of the best stories to come out of The Cannon Group, Runaway Train. Runway Train is directed by Andrei Konchalovsky and stars John Voight, Eric Roberts, Rebecca De Mornay, Kyle T. Heffner, John P. Ryan, T.K. Carter, and Kenneth McMillian.Be sure to check out The Cannon Film Guide: Vol 1 and Vol 2, or please support your local bookstore and ask them to order it for you.
Sylvester Stallone plays Ray Tango, a flashy narco cop in the LAPD who is all business and efficient. Kurt Russell plays Gabriel Cash, more of a devil-may-care type who just so happens to get the big bust whenever he needs it. Drug kingpin Yves Perret (Jack Palance) wants the two biggest obstacles out of his way, and hatches a plan that will do it: have Tango and Cash brought up on a bogus murder charge. The cops are initially sentenced to a short stint in a minimum security prison, only to find themselves railroaded (thanks to Perret's influence) to a seedy penitentiary, where their lives are in danger at every turn. They have no choice but to try to escape and clear their names, taking down Perret in the process.
On this episode, we talk about the fantastic 1989 film Tango and Cash (directed by Andrei Konchalovsky). Meanwhile, Ronald is viciously owned, Rahul explains the southwestern lifestyle, Lawrence's death wish makes another uncomfortably appearance, Dan vibes insanely hard with the movie, and Brandon is genuinely baffled by the film. They explore the film's blend of comedy, camaraderie, and adrenaline-pumping moments, solidifying its status as a beloved action classic. Join them as they hit the streets with "Tango & Cash" and take down the bad guys in style.
Welcome back to Not A Bomb! It's February, and love is in the air. This month, the guys are diving into some of the biggest “bromance” bombs of all time. This week on the show, Troy and Brad are back in 80's action territory with 1989's action comedy - Tango & Cash. Marred by production troubles, director exits, and critical hate; Tango & Cash borrows from many of the 1980's action tropes to construct a film worthy of induction into the Action Hall of Fame. You also won't find a better comedic shower sequence between two of the biggest action icons in film history. If you're a fan of eighties action movies, you should know The Cannon Group. Run by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, in the eighties they cranked out a slew of low-budget action movies, most of which were hated by critics. Yet, every once in awhile they made a legitimately great movie that would even make the critics sit up and take notice. One such as this 80's flick directed by Andrei Konchalovsky (who later made "Tango & Cash") and based on a script by Akira Kurosawa who was a legendary filmmaker in his own right. So get yourself all greased up, jump onboard and then hold on tight as Tim Williams and guest co-host JB Huffman from "Manly Movies" Podcast discuss “Runaway Train” from 1985 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The film is dedicated to the memory of Richard Holley. Helicopter pilot Rick Holley was killed in a helicopter crash during filming. According to the Alaska Rails website, "his helicopter hit a power line in the canyon north of Tunnel Section". This occurred on March 9, 1985 and was listed as "helicopter accident en route to Alaska filming location”. Remember Cannon Films? They were an independent production company started in the '70s run by two Israeli cousins (Yoram Globus, Menahem Globus) who wanted to bring their cinematic ambitions to the United States....and they released a LOT of movies, most of which were considered schlock in retrospect. But every once in a while, they would release a GENUINE quality film and this was one of them. :) Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, this is a tense action adventure focusing on two escaped convicts of an Alaskan prison who jump on to a nearby train before eventually realizing that its conductor has died and its breaks are not working. Hence it's a.....RUNAWAY TRAIN. ;) Jon Voight and Eric Roberts star as the two convicts along with Rebecca De Mornay as a rail worker who they encounter on their adventure. Catholic art historian Elizabeth Lev returns to Criteria to discuss two films about Michelangelo. The Agony and The Ecstasy (1965), directed by Carol Reed and starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Rex Harrison as Pope Julius II, is what Italians call an "Americanata" - an unapologetically bombastic, colorful Hollywood transformation of Italian or Roman history. It focuses on the conflict and collaboration between Michelangelo and his papal patron in the project of painting the Sistine Chapel. Sin (2019), directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, gives us a gritty, filthy Renaissance Florence and Rome and a Michelangelo who is something like a lovable hobo, outstandingly performed by Alberto Testone. Sin takes place in the fallow period of Michelangelo's career immediately after he painted the Sistine ceiling, in which his work was stalled by the conflict between his two patrons, the Della Rovere and Medici families. Rather than showing Michelangelo making art, it shows his spiritual and economic struggles during this period. As hesitant as the title Sin might make us, Elizabeth Lev praises it for correctly identifying avarice and pride as Michelangelo's sins, rather than focusing on the question of his sexuality as many do today. (Though the film is not free of sexual content involving other characters.) Fifty years ago, Konchalovsky co-wrote the greatest film about an artist: Andrei Rublev (directed by Andrei Tarkovsky). He identifies Sin as a continuation of the themes of Rublev. Indeed, both of these films about Michelangelo share with Rublev the tension between artistic/religious integrity and working for patrons who may be commissioning religious works for worldly motives. This week the group kicks off the holiday season with the theme of "these are a few of our favorite things" which are movies we will tune into any time they air on television and the first pick goes to Commando with the Sylvester Stalone and Kurt Russell buddy cop film, Tango & Cash. A movie that was so powerful it required two directors to complete it, Andrei Konchalovsky and Albert Magnoli. Also in the episode we welcome another member of the Porch family to the show, Fatty, who we learned was confused why Tom Hanks and his slobbering dog weren't in this.

It's “Face Your Fears Week” on this blazingly fast-paced, pulse-pounding, edge of your seat, thrilling segment of Fabulous Film & Friends where my sister Roseanne and I are going to watch a film that we've been putting off since it came out in 1985, Andrei Konchalovsky's Runaway Train starring Jon Voight and Eric Roberts. Joining me again are teacher, thinker, anti-horseplay activist and action movie nut, Roseanne Caputi. And later in the segment for color commentary is the toughest, surliest, most pugnacious performer this side of the Russian River, GORDON ALEX ROBERTSON!Before we tear into it: a synopsis! Runaway Train follows the exploits of two violent convicts, Manny Manehim and Buck McGeehy , as they bust out of Alaska's Stonehaven Maximum Security Prison --which is overseen by the hard-nosed and unforgiving Warden Ranken. Evading their pursuers, Manny and Buck stow away on what they think is the relative safety and privacy of a train hauling four locomotive engines. Immediately however, the train's engineer collapses from a heart-attack and falls from the train, causing the locomotive to pick up speed and a go out of control. With Warden Ranken in hot pursuit, Manny, Buck, and the only other person on the train, a tough but beautiful engine wrangler named Sarah, desperately scramble for ways out of their collision course with certain doom. Were we right to fear and put off seeing this film? Find out!

“El Tren del Infierno” (1985), basada en una idea de Akira Kurosawa y con la dirección del soviético Andrei Konchalovsky, es una “rara avis” en la producción de la Cannon. ¿O no? Secciones y tiempos 1. Steven Yeun talks about his starring role in the new drama Minari, about a father who moves his family from California to rural Arkansas to follow his dream of starting a farm. Filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky explains why Russian audiences have had vastly differing reactions to his historical drama Dear Comrades. Actress Devery Jacobs talks about defending Joshua Whitehead's debut novel Jonny Appleseed in this year's Canada Reads debates. Tracy Morgan chats about Coming 2 America, and shares how Eddie Murphy and the original Coming to America inspired his own rise as a comedian.
DEAR COMRADES is based on a true story surrounding a strike by factory workers on June 1st and 2nd, 1962 in the city of Novocherkassk. The raising of food prices and the lowering of wages at the local factory led to a spontaneous uprising by thousands of area residents that eventually leading to violent reaction by local and federal officials. The events of those two days was kept secret until the nineties. DEAR COMRADES focuses on the life and family of Lyudmila (Julia Vysotskaya) a Party executive and devout communist who had fought in WWII for Stalin's ideology. Certain that her work will create a communist society, the woman detests any anti-Soviet sentiment. During a strike at the local electromotive factory, Lyudmila witnesses a laborers' piquet gunned down under orders from the government that seeks to cover up mass labor strikes in USSR. After the bloodbath, when survivors flee from the square, Lyudmila realizes her daughter has disappeared. A gaping rift opens in her worldview. Despite the blockade of the city, mass arrests, and the authorities' attempts to cover up the massacre, Lyudmila searches for her daughter. We don't know how the search will end, but realize that the woman's life won't ever be the same. Director Andrei Konchalovsky (Uncle Vanya, Siberiade, Runaway Train, The Inner Circle) and lead actor Julia Vysotskaya join us for a conversation on the importance of telling an unknown story, the role of art and storytelling and how Lyuda’s saga reflexes a broader perspective on Soviet-era repression. Yo no siento ninguna; luego no soy tal bestia." Ricardo III. William Shakespeare.

This weeks episode is tackling the 1989 buddy cop film Tango & Cash starring Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone directed by Andrei Konchalovsky & Albert Magnoli and written by Randy Feldman. Short summary: Police officers Ray Tango (Sylvester Stallone) and Gabe Cash (Kurt Russell) are narcotics experts working to bring down drug lord Yves Perret (Jack Palance). In an attempt to stymie their efforts, Perret sets up Tango and Cash, making it look as if they've killed an FBI agent. Arrested and put in prison, the two cops formulate an escape plan and, once out, team up with Tango's exotic dancer sister, Katherine (Teri Hatcher), in order to clear their records and take down Perret once and for all.

For countries like Britain, Germany and France the significance of World War One is regularly debated and commemorated. But what of that other great power, Russia? It also fought against Germany, but by the end of the war Tsar Nicholas II and his family had been murdered and the Bolshevik Revolution had brought Lenin to power. How far does what was happening in Russia then, help explain what is going on today? Zeinab Badawi talks to the renowned Russian theatre and film director Andrei Konchalovsky.Image: Andrei Konchalovsky. Credit: Getty
