This week we chat with Michael Kallio, the director of the Gunnar Hansen documentary Dinner with Leatherface. Michael comes with a TON of stories about his time in the industry and with various indie horror film icons as we dive into the life of Gunnar Hansen and the weird way in which he made such a difference in Michael's life. Then we try to talk about The Fly, but Michael had a lot of stories...so this isn't a typical Scarred for Life episode (which is fine because we originally discussed The Fly with Rob Jabbaz back in episode 103). Brace yourself—this episode of Horror Hour with the Hanna's is not for the faint of heart. We're diving into The Sadness (2021), the Taiwanese extreme horror film that shocked audiences with its relentless gore, depraved violence, and bleak social commentary. Directed by Rob Jabbaz, this viral outbreak thriller follows a young couple trying to survive as their city descends into total chaos, driven by infected citizens who act out their most horrific impulses. We explore how The Sadness pushes the boundaries of modern horror, its connections to Crossed comics and pandemic anxieties, and whether its brutal shock factor serves a deeper purpose or simply aims to disturb. Is this one of the most intense horror films of the decade, or does it go too far? This week we are join by Seth from Movie Friends Podcast. In 2022 Ethan Hawke returned to horror in Black Phone. David Howard Thornton donned the creepy clown costume in Terrifier 2, a definite step up from the first film. TI West thrilled us with X and Pearl. Zach Cregger made his presence known with Barbarian. And what about Rob Jabbaz's visceral, blood-dripping zombie film The Sadness? Jordan Peele's Nope and Parker Finn's Smile make the list as well. We can't forget (or maybe we're trying to forget) David Gordon Green's final installment in the latest Halloween trilogy, a divisive film to say the least. Though the Taiwanese film, THE SADNESS, arrived at theaters in Taiwan in 2021, the movie reached North American audiences on May 12, 2022 through the streaming service Shudder. Oddly the film was written and directed by a native Canadian, Rob Jabbaz, the movie is in the nation's native Cantonese language and subtitled or dubbed for all other nations.Jim and Kat are a young couple living in the big city of Taipei during the epidemic virus Alvin that has been sweeping the nation. Similar to COVID-19, people are told to be careful and stay in place whenever possible. However, a variant of the virus causes people to go insane and begin murderous rampages throughout the city. Jim and Kat try their best to find each other during day one of what seems to be an apocalypse.THE SADNESS (2022) is in the frame of the “hate virus” version of the zombie film. Receiving excellent reviews, the movie is also noted for its intense violence and depravity. Not unfamiliar with Taiwanese zombie movies (ZOMBIE 108 (2012) and ZOMBIE FIGHT CLUB (2014)), the sex-and-violence genre has flourished in Taiwan. Dark Discussions takes a look at this kinetic film.

Movement is life! Welcome to the Third Edition of DEAD MAN STILL WALKING, where Dr. Walking Dead dares you to explore the depths of depravity found in this year's notorious zombie flick, The Sadness (2022), a new Horror film from Taiwan written and directed by Rob Jabbaz. Dr. Bishop addresses the gore and violence and whether it is excessively or unnecessarily gratuitous. He describes how this new film fits into both 20th century and 21st century zombie narratives. Is “The Sadness” also a Romance? Is it an “Anti-Romance”? Is this film original or derivative? What other zombie narratives, if any, serve as influences? Kyle Bishop answers these questions and discusses the distinctions between “gluttonous zombies” and “wrath zombies” / “lust zombies.” In the beginning of his review, Dr. Bishop discusses some very mild, premise-based “spoilers.” But after providing a spoiler warning, he eventually covers full-blown spoilers for “The Sadness.” Listen! Note: To view ALL of Dr. Bishop's Dead Man Still Walking solocast episode can USE THIS LINK. Dead Man Still Walking is a biweekly, short-form solocast hosted by Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop, author of American Zombie Gothic and How Zombies Conquered Popular Culture. We'll just warn you here and now - it's super violent and sexually violent and gross and hard to take, but is it awesome? The Running Scared co-hosts debate it's awesomeness. How does this film activate our fears about a pandemic and a society riddled with public shootings? Is this a new spin on zombies or a disease outbreak story? We watched The Sadness before it was available for streaming in the US because we are a big time movie review podcast. I can easily say that this is one of the craziest movies I've ever seen, and will stick with me for a long time. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website (1:30) - Intro(7:00) -Synopsis(9:00) -Review(17:45) -Score(26:17) -Spoilers(1:23:35) - Horror Movie WHOORES https://youtu.be/VUR1DWh7eLs Synopsis The Sadness follows boyfriend Jim (Berant Zhu) and girlfriend Kat (Regina Lei) on their normal day in Taiwan. Unfortunately for our couple, this normal day is the day that the Alvin virus hits their city. The Alvin virus is a pandemic that they've been hearing about for a while but no one seems to be taking seriously. As the virus hits their hometown, people start to die, and worse, rape each other in the streets. The virus causes people to cry as they assault each other while simultaneously exhibiting total ecstasy in causing pain and torture. It seems to unlock the most reprehensible parts of people and make them capable of depravity you've never even seen in horror movies. Will Jim and Kat make it through, or will the sadness take them?  Review Canadian writer, director Rob Jabbaz brought this manga adaptation of Crossed (Garth Ennis and Alan Moore)to Taiwan to film. This is his first full-length feature film. Without question, this is one of the most depraved movies I've ever seen in terms of dialog. The violence is absolutely absurd and over-the-top. The themes are disgusting, and are meant to cast a light on the absurdities of politicizing a major health concern such as a pandemic.  I heard a little bit about The Sadness before I watched it, enough to brace myself, which was good because I don't think I would have enjoyed it otherwise. The makeup, effects, and execution is unbelievable, rivaling that of similar splatter movies like Braindead / Dead Alive. This is a slick movie that is well made, and outpaces most action movies handily. It's also so absurdly disgusting that I imagine many won't be able to finish it. Watch The SadnessWatch on ShudderClick Here to Subscribe to Shudder It takes the old premise of zombies and the morality tales that they brought to the silver screen and pops a monster truck engine under the hood before sending you to hell with tears streaming from your eyes. The Sadness is super gross, but it does have something of a point, which seems to make it easier to take in.  The non-stop themes of rape, murder, and stupendously disgusting dialog where characters describe in vivid detail the acts of violent sodomy they wish to perform made me so happy that this wasn't in English. Had I heard those words spoken in a language that I understood, I would have been sickened to my core. The only movie that I've reviewed that left me feeling almost as gross as this was The House that Jack Built. Not many will be able to get through this one and those who do will have to live with all those nasty thoughts in their head. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Rob Jabbaz's new film THE SADNESS took the festival world in 2021 by storm. The story about a dangerous virus that causes the infected to lose their inhibitions has shades of our own Joe Lynch's MAYHEM (2017), however Rob takes it all a bloody, graphic step further. Audiences who have already seen THE SADNESS internationally and on the festival circuit have been disgusted, shocked, and full of praise for the film which will see its US release this spring. Adam, Joe, and Arwen talk to Rob from halfway around the world in Taipei where he explains how the pandemic itself influenced his story, how the film was financed originally as more of a traditional zombie film, the hurdles of creating provocative cinema in these modern times, how his DIY animation background helped his live-action craft, and much more! Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener trying to avoid creative burnout and Adam announces his first convention appearance in almost 4 years in this extremely candid conversation about “going there” with your art.

This week we sit down with writer, director, animator and professional spicy boi Rob Jabbaz! His feature debut is an extreme horror film called The Sadness, which has been traveling the festival circuit and picking up awards and anguished faces alike. We chat about his love of gore, how he was infused with spookiness from his birth and then discuss just how they got the blood in The Sadness to look so gnarly and vibrant and how he filmed the movie during COVID. Then we talk about David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986). We discuss how a random scene tormented him for years and what young Terry took from it, as well as Mary Beth's first (!!) thoughts on the film. Along the way, we talk about the AIDS metaphor, the love triangles and how the two men have an opposite narrative trajectory and how Cronenberg's films are filled with more nuance than expected. The Sadness is hitting a variety of film festivals and should see its release next year. In the meantime, follow Rob on Instagram and Twitter. Follow Mary Beth, Terry and the Podcast on Twitter. On this Simplistic Sit-Down, Fantasia 2021 Edition, Matt sits down with Rob Jabbaz, the director of the new Taiwanese film, "The Sadness," which made it's North American premier at the 2021 Fantasia Film Festival. The film is a blood-splattered feature in a parallel Taiwan where an unknown virus has taken hold of society where there is no quarter from violence and destruction. Rob and Matt chat about what it was like to shoot in Taiwan during the Covid-19 pandemic, how one fateful night during a screening at Fantasia made him want to start making his own films, and much more.
