After a month-long hiatus — and just before we take another — Jacob, Sage, and Tate are back at it with a review of the 1975 classic Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino and John Cazale. This gripping, unconventional heist film sparks a wide-ranging conversation about the real-life events that inspired it, including the Attica Prison Riots and the Life magazine article that formed the basis for the script. We dive into Pacino's powerhouse performance, the film's bold storytelling choices, and why Dog Day Afternoon still resonates nearly 50 years later. This movie was directed by Sydney Lumet.GD4AM: 85/100IMDb: 8.0/10Metacritic: 86/100Letterboxd: 4.3/5RT: 96%Three amateur robbers plan to hold up a Brooklyn bank. A nice, simple robbery: Walk in, take the money, and run. Unfortunately, the supposedly uncomplicated heist suddenly becomes a bizarre nightmare as everything that could go wrong does. This movie is currently available for rent on most VOD platforms.

Wicked gives us the secret origin of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. We dive a little deeper into what makes her so unique.Wicked is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic hits of the holiday season this year, following on from its wild success first as a bestselling novel and then as an even more successful Broadway musical. Is there the equivalent of an EGOT for adapted properties? Because if so, Wicked just needs a video game or something to qualify. At the heart of Wicked, however, is the sympathetic origin story of the formerly nameless Wicked Witch of the West from the classic Wizard of Oz story. Given both a name and a significant backstory in Wicked, we learn that her trademark green skin wasn't the manifestation of some inner character flaw, but rather a somewhat magical mishap brought about by her mother consuming a potion while pregnant with the future villainess. We admit that delving into the realm of pure magic on Does it Fly? has occasionally proven difficult, but in the case of Elphaba, there's something to the question of just how green a person can get, and the possible causes.Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here or check it out on our YouTube page to learn more. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Book Learnin' Wicked is first based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, which also spawned the sequels Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.Of course, all of this goes back to L. Frank Baum's original children's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But did you know that book had a whopping thirteen sequels? Oz mythology is vast! The Evolution of Skin Color in HumansMelanin is what gives everyone their skin color, and understanding how and why various skin tones evolved is the foundation of our discussion about the (potential) science of green skin. Read more here.Don't Turn Green! As a quick PSA, here's a guide to how you can keep any copper oxide in jewelry from giving your skin that (lovely?) Oz-like green tint. When People Actually Turned GreenHypochromic anemia, or chlorosis, was a condition that did indeed leave some folks with green-ish skin. We usually try to do a little  better than just Wikipedia links in these notes, but because chlorosis isn't really an issue these days, there's not a ton of contemporary writing about it. So start with this Wikipedia entry, and if you want to dig deeper there are two scientific journal articles you can try to access here and here. There will be a quiz next week! (not really)ThalidomideSince the origin of the Wicked Witch's green skin begins with her mom drinking a potion, an example Hakeem cites in this episode is the tragedy surrounding use of Thalidomide during the mid-20th century, in which expectant mothers took a drug that was supposed to help with morning sickness and instead caused severe physical issues with their babies. A full history can be found here, but please beware of disturbing imagery.SUGGESTED VIEWING Oz-related screen adaptations are pretty much too numerous to list, and too varied in quality to really get into in the space we have here. But here are the ones we recommend…The Wizard of Oz (1939)MGM's 1939 musical classic is rightfully the most inescapable, culturally dominant version of the Oz mythos ever put on screen. It's also the most beloved. Almost impossible to imagine anyone reading this isn't aware of it in some capacity. The Wiz (1978)Sydney Lumet and Joel Schumacher's screen adaptation of the stage play which updated the Oz story for a more modern audience features a cast that includes no less than Diana Ross as Dorothy Gale, Richard Pryor (!) as the Wiz, and the legendary Lena Horne as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.Return to Oz (1985)Long before taking the lead role in The Craft, Fairuza Balk took her turn as Dorothy Gale in a movie that, while essentially a sequel to the 1939 film, is actually more frightening and disturbing than The Craft! Absolutely worth your time.Wicked Part I (2024)Director Jon M. Chu's anticipated adaptation of the book and Broadway musical boasts an absurdly all-star cast including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and more! WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For some darker fantasy realm stuff, check out our episode on Netflix's The Witcher right here!FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Starring Henry Fonda as the President put in an unwinnable situation, he only has so long to stop a deadly nuclear accident. In order to stop the chain of events that increasingly seem inevitable, he must make some disturbing choices, and ask who's lives are worth sacrificing.   Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom and Cameron Tuttle, with frequent appearances from film expert Juzo Greenwood. 1964 két ilyen filmet is adott a világnak. Combine this with his willingness to create new musical worlds, working in virtually any medium or genre, well, it’s the perfect alchemy for a film and television music composer. Originally from NY City, Mark Isham studied piano and violin, but the trumpet captured his imagination and became his signature instrument. By the age 15 was playing in jazz clubs, while performing San Francisco symphony. In the early 80’s Mark began experimenting with electronic music and quickly gained notoriety for his work in the new age genre, the self titled Mark Isham album won a Grammy award and Grammy nominations for the follow up albums Castalia and Tibet. Mark collaborated with the likes of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock; his Blue Sun album and Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project and the ARIA award nominated Bittersweet album with Kate Ceberano, are regarded with awe in the jazz world. Mark Isham’s signature trumpet sound is heard on albums of music icons including Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Chris Isaak, and Van Morrison. Mark has scored films for the most acclaimed directors; Robert Altman, Robert Redford, Jodi Foster, Sydney Lumet, Frank Darabont, John Ridley, Gavin O’Conner and Brain De Palma Movie highlights include Oscar-winning movies Crash, A River Runs Through It, Warrior, Judas and the Black Messiah. Along with Golden Globe winning Bobby and The Black Dahlia. Recent TV highlights include Once Upon a Time, American Crime, Little Fires Everywhere (which he garnered Mark's sixth Emmy nomination), Godfather of Harlem and HBO’s The Nevers. David: When a military prison devoted to regimentation, correction and the rebuilding of wayward units fails to manage its own, the hierarchy of power turns upon itself. As those who covet power scramble to avoid responsibility it all twists and twists again into a Rubic’s cube of blame and counter blame. We salute the departing Sean Connery with this not-quite-obscure-but-lesser-known anti-Bond vehicle directed by Sydney Lumet. Jules: A rare pleasure for those interested in well-constructed plots and characters who are just complex enough to support the dramatic conceit. Adroit and affecting work from all, especially Connery.

On October 31st, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary actor Sean Connery. He was someone that was held in high esteem by all of us in the cave. We decided to do a special show in his honor so we did a bit of a search for some less popular starring vehicles to look at for the podcast. We start off with 1966's "A Fine Madness", from director Irvin Kershner, which intends to be a comedy but unfortunately fell VERY flat for us. It DOES have a great supporting cast, and a handful of interesting moments, but overall was a relic from a different time, and not in the best way. We follow that up with the very impressive "The Offence" from 1973. Directed by another legend, Sydney Lumet, it is VERY challenging to watch. It does allow Connery to really shine as an actor, and reminded us all just how effective he could be. Please let us know your favorite Connery performance, and also what you'd like to see on future shows but getting it touch with us.  Please send emails to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com.  You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Tim and Edson discuss the 2007 melodramatic thriller, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, currently streaming on HBO. Why? Because Philip Seymour Hoffman could fill in any and all story gaps with superior acting. How cool is it that Sydney Lumet rolled with two cameras the whole shoot? What's with all these theatre rats being in a film together? How does training and work in theatre prepare you for film? What are the many facets and questions that come up around representation (specifically of Black characters)? All that and more in this fifth episode of "That's That: A Philip Seymour Hoffman Retrospective". This episode's guest is friend and filmmaker, Edson Jean. The Nick Taylor Horror Show
REVENGE Director, Coralie Fargeat [Episode 47]

The Nick Taylor Horror Show

Coralie Fargeat is a French writer and director who made her feature film debut with 2017's Revenge, now streaming on Shudder.  Coralie started her career in France as an AD, and shortly after realizing that she wanted to be a director, she made a short and took it on the festival circuit. The short opened many doors for her, and from there, she wrote multiple screenplays and took writing classes, all of which collectively helped her find her voice as a filmmaker.  This path led her to pitching the concept of Revenge to multiple producers, ultimately striking a deal. In this interview, we hear more details about Coralie's filmmaker origin story, how to be an assertive director, and tips for creating your own local filmmaking community and support system. All of this, and so much more on today's episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show.    Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Coralie: Prep your materials. In addition to the script for Revenge, Coralie wrote a 40-page treatment that described the story, plot, subtext, and visual cues in stark detail. This really conveyed to producers that she had a real clear vision for this project. She also did a ripomatic treatment reel that showcased tonal references of music, movie clips, and images that further defined the movie. All of which gave the producers more confidence in the movie and in her.    Conflicts are inevitable. Sometimes in the heat of the moment on a grueling set while you're over time and over budget, you don't always have time to explain things. And as much as I hate to say it, according to many directors, sometimes you don't always have time to be nice. Yes, as a director, you should strive to make every effort to be as respectful and kind to your cast and crew as possible, and as Chelsea Stardust mentioned in a  previous episode when it comes to filmmaking, “it's chaos, be kind.” However, throughout the course of making films sometimes, you will have to enter conflicts assertively so you can get what you need.  There's a difference between being an asshole and being strategically aggressive. If you're a miserable fuck face on set who yells and screams all day every day, your crew will check out instantly and underperform. And you'll deserve it. But if you're too nice, you run the risk of being taken advantage of. There's no clear answer here, but this is an eventual scenario that all directors will have to face and figure out on their own. Coralie discussed her own struggles with this, but how inevitably, she had to get things done her way by whooping some asses here and there, but she did so strategically.  Eli Roth tells a story about the first day on the set of Hostel. He and a bunch of his crew members bonded over drinks the night before production, and he went back to his hotel room early, but the crew stayed out drinking and showed up on set completely hungover. Thinking that Eli was their friend, they felt entitled enough to do this without consequences. They were wrong. As a result, they dragged ass on set, and without batting an eye, Eli yelled and screamed at the guilty parties and even fired some of them. As harsh as this may sound, this set a precedent on his sets that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. If it's not your nature to be aggressive or assertive, it's important that you think about the bigger picture. Coralie touched on something so obvious but I rarely hear directors mention it, and that is that you are going to have to live with your film for the rest of your life. Every frame, every detail, every decision will be etched in stone. So those moments on set when you have to fight to get what you need or fight to get something done the right way, are all worthwhile battles because you only get one shot. Film is permanent. Do not let anybody off the hook, especially yourself.    Stare into the void. If you're a first time filmmaker, nothing can prepare you for your first movie. Yes, make shorts, go to film school, read Making Movies by Sydney Lumet, and watch every single special feature making-off that you can. But, things will inevitably go wrong, there will be things you don't know how to handle, crew members may turn on you, effects may break down, and that scene you agonized over, might not end up working. Now, the way that you respond to these things, the way that you handle yourself when you're at the mercy of all the things that go wrong on set, that's directing. Coralie mentioned how her work as an AD led her to realize that directing is problem-solving. Because of this, she was able to approach her first film with confidence, despite not entirely knowing what she was doing. But, she figured it out along the way and made a kickass movie regardless.  A lot of would-be directors get daunted by the thought of their first movie or spend too much time preparing, or over-educating themselves instead of just doing it. Successful first-time filmmaking is a messy process and largely a matter of jumping head first into a difficult shoot and flailing your way through to make your days and somehow, by the grace of god, making a good movie in spite of it all.  As important as preparation and education are, as a filmmaker, you can never be fully prepared for the difficulties your movies will bring you. You'll simply gradually get better with every single film that you make. So if you're approaching your first film, embrace feeling stupid, embrace feeling unprepared, embrace impostor syndrome, and embrace the fact that you don't really know what you're doing. Because nobody ever really does until they get a few films under their belt.    Build a collective. I was shocked to hear Coralie mention that horror and genre films were not widely accepted in France despite the French extremist horror movement. As a result, Coralie built a community of other aspiring genre filmmakers who would learn from each other, pool resources, and ultimately become a support system. They would even invite industry professionals, like writers, directors, and producers, to share their experiences on filmmaking and work with first-time filmmakers.  These kinds of relationships are priceless. Not just from a networking perspective but from a life perspective. As the saying goes, you become the sum total of the five people you spend the most amount of time with, so if you want to be a filmmaker, spend time around other filmmakers. Are you in a small town with not a lot of film people? Turn to social media, hold meetings via Skype, Zoom, or whatever. OR, start a podcast :) You'll need a community, a family, to fall back on when the going gets tough, and Coralie attributes her ability to overcome the many difficulties she experienced producing her first movie, to this community that she built. So find your tribe or build it from scratch.   ----- Produced by Simpler Media

It went on to be nominated for 4 Academy awards, I guarantee this classic, powerful movie will not disappoint!

If you’re an actor who’s signed on to share scenes with Michael Shannon, you’ve got yourself a bit of a dilemma. On one hand, you can count on people watching; on the other, you can be pretty certain they won’t be watching you. To be fair, nothing could be further from Shannon’s intent; co-stars and directors routinely praise his generosity and dedication to the success of any project he’s in. It’s just that the guy is – inherently, chronically and helplessly – riveting. Evidence of this seemingly hypnotic power came to light most publicly with his fairly small role in Revolutionary Road. Variety wrote, “The pic’s startling supporting turn comes from Michael Shannon, who’s mesmerizing as the clinically insane son of local realtor and busybody… When Shannon is onscreen, it’s impossible to watch anyone else.” In that instance, “anyone else” included Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Or take 99 Homes, which Time magazine called “a showcase for Shannon, who magnetizes all eyes, like a cobra in the corner.” Those are just two in a canon of some of the most consistently beaming reviews an actor could ever hope to paste in his scrapbook, though Shannon doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to keep one. If he did, it would be encyclopedic, as he’s piled up over 50 award nominations and an impressive number of wins over a career that comprises at least 100 film, TV and stage credits. So why is he not a household name? Hard to say, unless actors have to become “stars” to claim any permanency in our memory banks. What’s more confounding is that Shannon never planned to be an actor. He was a troubled, late-blooming kid who floundered in school and only defaulted to drama to get out of sports. He left school at 16 and with no formal training, was on stage in a year, TV the year after, and in Groundhog Day the year after that. Shannon tried working with an acting coach only once in his career, and said it was the worst audition he ever had. With fate apparently having done the heavy lifting, an impressive range of directors were quick to capitalize, including Michael Bay, Cameron Crowe, Oliver Stone, Peter Bogdanovich, Sydney Lumet, and even Tom Ford. As did HBO, casting him as Boardwalk Empire’s repressed G-man Nelson Van Alden. But no one has taken better advantage of Shannon’s facile embodiment of complex characters than Jeff Nichols, who directed him in Take Shelter, Midnight Special, and Shotgun Stories. Nichols has said, “Shannon makes me a better writer. He certainly makes me a better director. I wanted [Midnight Special] to be a very lean screenplay in terms of narrative and exposition, and if you’re writing that part for Mike, he’s going to be able to fill those spaces with all the subtext that you don’t want to have to write about. He can carry all of that on his face, and that makes him a very powerful tool for a writer/director like me.” What more directors need to take advantage of is Shannon’s range, which seems to be hiding in plain sight. He’s known for playing menacing, angry, possibly crazy guys whose ability to keep it all just beneath the surface keeps us in their thrall – quiet bears you do not want to poke. While he plays them subtly and brilliantly, he also made a surprisingly good low-key romantic lead in Frank & Lola. His comic chops are most evident on the stage, where he still spends as much time as possible. Look no further than his portrayal of showbiz huckster Felix Artifex in the comedy Mistakes Were Made, a role he’s reprised several times to wildly enthusiastic crowds and ticket sales. The New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood said Shannon shouldered the part “with a full arsenal of gifts: a subdued but strong natural presence, a voice rich in grit and capable of imbuing Felix’s wheedling and needling with a variety of emotional colors, a keen understanding of how pathos can feed comedy and vice versa.” Roger Ebert put it more succinctly: “His performance in Mistakes Were Made was one of the most amazing I have ever seen.” Given that it’s a one-man play, it may also be the only performance in which Shannon risked being upstaged. For all the taut wiring that sparks below his surface, Shannon says he’s learned to relax a bit more these days, and that approach has made him a better actor. Besides begging the question whether it’s possible for him to be any better, it also demonstrates a broad interpretation of the word “relax”. He already has eight projects in the works for next year, including Horse Soldiers, a Special Forces drama with Chris Hemsworth, and Signature Move, which he’s executive producing. He admits he may have a small problem turning down a great script. All the better for us. Maybe Shannon wasn’t looking to become an actor, but sometimes fate just gets things right.

Upon a rewatch, the guys realized just how prescient the subject matter is, especially in the current political climate where xenophobia and racism, especially in privileged white male culture pervades thinking. Frank Vincent is an acclaimed actor, musician, comedian, author and producer. He was born in North Adams, Massachusetts of first generation Italian-Americans and raised in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey. Frank's father, an amateur actor, introduced him to show business at an early age. Frank acted in school plays and studied music at St. Paul's grammar school. He played piano, trumpet and drums, but his love for the drums soon took center stage. Frank spent his adolescence playing and traveling with various national championship drum and bugle corps. This passion evolved into playing in small combos at various nightclubs. He then met record producer Bill Ramal who became his musical mentor. In time, he became a successful recording drummer for such prominent names as Don Costa, Paul Anka, Del Shannon, Trini Lopez and the Belmonts. He found himself playing 5-6 nights a week and recording 3-4 days a week. His insatiable desire for performing soon came to the forefront and his drum playing became secondary. At this pace, he developed a stage personality and learned the meaning of comedic timing and discipline, which would soon lend itself to his acting career. In 1975, Frank made his feature film acting debut in Ralph DeVito's "Death Collector". Martin Scorsese saw his work and cast him in the 1980 Academy Award-nominated film of the decade, "Raging Bull"... From that point until the present day, Frank has appeared in numerous television shows, music videos and over fifty feature films.
