In this 119th episode of Unleashing Sister Saints, I want to share some of my thoughts as I listened to President Camille Johnson's talk during one of the sessions of the April 2025 General Conference. Her talk was titled “Spiritually Whole in Him.” She said, “Wholeness does not necessarily mean physical and emotional restoration in this life. Wholeness is born of faith in and conversion to Jesus Christ." I had some "ahahs" during her talk and have reviewed it multiple times since. I conclude with this thought: Each of us has scars of some kind, but I testify that we are whole-enough to be able to receive personal revelation from on high and feel that peace of the Holy Ghost wash over our whole beings. We are whole-enough to continue to use the gift of the Son's Atonement, whenever we chose to be chosen. Let's choose to feel whole-enough. Listen in!
"If we don't tell our stories, who will? And if they do, will they tell it right?" — This question grounds the work of Marcia Black, a powerful cultural steward who's leading the charge at Black Bottom Archives, celebrating 10 years of preserving and honoring Black Detroit's legacy. In this Detroit is Different podcast, Marcia shares how her passion was sparked by early roots in environmental justice organizing through EMEAC, where she witnessed the brilliance and resilience of Black women leading on the frontlines. That experience lit a fire, and inspired by pioneers like PG Watkins and Camille Johnson, Marcia embraced the responsibility of archiving Black life, especially the voices of Black women too often erased from historical narratives. From growing up between Detroit and Duval County, Florida, her journey is a mosaic of Black Southern and Midwestern cultural memory. Guided by the radical education at Marygrove College and the example of her entrepreneurial, Catholic, beauty-salon-owning, computer-working, reverend grandmother, Marcia now curates community through exhibits, storytelling, and cultural programming. “Black women have always been the keepers of the flame,” she says, and her work ensures that flame continues to burn bright—one story, one installation, one memory at a time. Scott—to Camille's teenage struggles with modesty, faith and mental health. Their love story, temple experiences, and navigating higher callings in the Church, including Jared's time as a bishop, reveal the pressures and impacts of leadership roles. We dive into personal experiences of grief, loss, and growth, discussing the lessons we've learned from family tragedies and struggles in our marriage. We also share insights from Camille Johnson's message about inviting Christ to be the author of our stories and Spencer W. Kimball's powerful words on tragedy and free agency. Without a doubt, says writer and scholar Caroline Kline, Latter-day Saint leader President Camille Johnson would have heard former church presidents telling working mothers to “come home” and focus on their families. Instead, she pursued a 30-year career as a corporate lawyer. In this episode of “Mormon Land,” Kline, assistant director of the Center for Global Mormon Studies at Southern California's Claremont Graduate University, explains just how radical it is that the top brass of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are lauding her as a role model — and why their decision to do so may be a tough pill to swallow for some. The author of “Mormon Women at the Crossroads: Global Narratives and the Power of Connectedness” also breaks down what she sees as an increased anxiety by church leadership over female members' activity and level of devotion, why their current efforts to reverse worrisome trends could backfire and what they could do instead to make women feel more at home.

In this world, relief is a feeling that we all crave as we are dealing with life's burdens placed upon us and our loved ones. So, in this last General Conference, when Sister Camille Johnson shared that “Jesus Christ is Relief,” it resonated with our community. The Savior's way is the only way to feel peace, and in turn, bring both temporal and spiritual relief and peace to others. "The Lord helps take our burdens until we can do it on our own." Kathryn joins Kaylen Nelson in this episode as they discuss what stood out about this specific talk, and how we can find our own relief in the Savior. Top Takeaways: The miracle that the Lord provides of not just physical relief, but spiritual relief from our sins and the fallen world can be just as impactful. We are often "stingy" with the burdens we carry in this life, but when we give those to the Savior, we find that it's easier to go through this life with him as our partner in peace. We sometimes blame God or ourselves for the natural consequences of living in a fallen world, so it's important to remember that we need to turn to him instead of away. Helping be a relief to others is how we partner with the Lord to bring relief and share in his work. Small and simple challenge: Read and study out Camille Johnson's talk, "Jesus Christ is Relief" and share your insights as to how the Savior is your relief! To say that leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often talk about religious freedom would be, well, an understatement. It is a common theme from the top apostles on down and appears to be a favorite topic of Dallin Oaks, first counselor in the governing First Presidency and a former Utah Supreme Court justice. Recently, President Camille Johnson, global head of the children's Primary organization and herself a high-powered attorney, picked up on the theme as well in an address in Iowa. The church has been calling for a balancing of religious liberty and LGBTQ protections. It succeeded in passing such legislation in Utah and has pushed for similar measures in Arizona and Georgia. It also backs the proposed federal Fairness for All Act, which a number of prominent LGBTQ and civil rights groups oppose. So why all the attention on religious freedoms? Are they really under threat? If so, from where or whom? And is compromise not only possible but also preferable? On this week's show, Sarah Barringer Gordon, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert on religious liberty who has written notably about Mormon history, explores those questions and more. She notes, among other points, that the issue has been politicized in the legislative arena and states that while some perceived risks to faith freedoms may be more imagined than real.
