Marisol Nichols dives deep into the ‘Safer Streets for All Act' in the state of California and how the state has turned into a 'safe haven' for exploiters and traffickers to take advantage of vulnerable women, children, and the trans community. This calls for legislators to reevaluate this newly enacted law, as it does more harm than good to potential victims of trafficking. This is because law enforcement has their hands tied, leaving cases of such crimes unchecked. While California is a state full of dreams for many, for others who are trafficked and subjected to this current horrific law, it is also a place of nightmares. Like the show? Switzerland has introduced drive-in sex boxes to the city of Zurich. HeadTopics reports that Nine garage-style wooden structures have been erected (no pun intended) in a bid to make prostitution safer for the workers and clients. The plans for the ‘sex boxes' were passed in November after being voted for by locals in a referendum.Customers will have to pass a checkpoint before entering, which opens at 5am every day, and then follow a marked route to 40 prostitutes. Here they shall select a worker, negotiate a fee and after drive into one of the wooden sheds. The sex workers must purchase a ‘work ticket' every night, costing around €4.50, which enables them to participate in the safer sex work scheme.Meanwhile prostitution is again rampant all across California. In January, the state's Safer Streets for All Act took effect. Gov. Gavin Newsom said the bill, which made loitering for the purpose of prostitution no longer a crime, was designed to prohibit police officers from confronting and arresting trans women and women of colour walking the streets.“To be clear, this bill does not legalize prostitution,” Newsom said of the bill in July 2022. “It simply revokes provisions of the law that have led to disproportionate harassment of women and transgender adults.“While I agree with the author's intent and I am signing this legislation, we must be cautious about its implementation. My administration will monitor crime and prosecution trends for any possible unintended consequences and will act to mitigate any such impacts.”This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5267208/advertisement

Bringing us to the Wind River Reservation, this week's guest, Jason Baldes, shares his work to bring back wild Buffalo to Wind River and to rematriate land to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes. Jason offers his deep wisdom about the ecological, spiritual, and cultural importance of buffalo.Jason's work with the Wind River Tribal Buffalo initiative has already had an immense effect. The physical and cultural landscape of the so-called United States is steeped in a colonial worldview, but work like Jason's is changing the tides and aligning conservation with long-standing Indigenous values. This healing work honors those ancestors who had buffalo, land, and ritual stolen from them by the United States government. Jason, an enrolled member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe, received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Land Resources & Environmental Sciences from Montana State University, where he focused on the restoration of buffalo/bison to Tribal lands. In 2016 he spearheaded the successful effort to relocate a herd to the Wind River Indian Reservation and works with both the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes in buffalo management and expansion. He is an advocate, educator and speaker on Indigenous cultural revitalization and ecological restoration who has also served as director of the Wind River Native Advocacy Center, where he was instrumental in the passing of the Wyoming Indian Education for All Act. He currently splits time as executive director of the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative, and Tribal Buffalo Program Senior Manager for the National Wildlife Federation's Tribal Partnerships Program. When kids turn two or three years old, they learn to tell what is called a “primary lie,” which is lying without much sophistication or awareness of how the listener will perceive the lie (hint: you completely failed to fool your parents). But when we turn four, we learn to tell “secondary lies,” which take into account the listener's likely reaction, and are more plausible. When we turn seven or eight we learn to tell “tertiary lies,” where we also make sure our lie is consistent with surrounding facts. But not until you've asked your legislator to support Medicare for All have you experienced the apex of deception: you walk out knowing they didn't agree with you, but you're not sure if they disagree with you, or whether you've learned anything about their position on the issue! So today we are here to talk about “legislative pushback,” or evasion, or avoidance - basically the whole playbook of tactics that legislators employ to land between “yes” and “no.” We are joined by Eagan Kemp and Vinay Krishnan today. Eagan is the Health Care Policy Advocate at Public Citizen. He is an expert in health care policy, including single-payer systems, and he previously served as a senior policy analyst at the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Vinay Krishnan is the National Field Organizer for the Center for Popular Democracy. We know him as an organizer, but he's also a writer of fiction and non-fiction, and an attorney based in Brooklyn, NY. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2-A6ubjVII Show Notes Medicare for All bills have not yet been introduced in the 118th Congress, the session that began in January 2023. Healthcare-NOW and our allies are starting our drive to gather co-sponsors BEFORE those bills are introduced. We expect the Medicare for All Act to be reintroduced before June in the House, and hopefully around the same time in the Senate. We aren't as dumb as Fox News conservatives like to make us seem, so we know that there isn't a great chance to pass M4A this session, but it's important to keep the momentum going by getting new cosponsors on the bill. Our past success in gaining co-sponsors has been due in large part to citizen lobbyists asking, pressuring and demanding their elected officials sign on. If you've never called your Senator or member of Congress, we have a guide! https://www.healthcare-now.org/makethecall. Some calls will be easy if you're lucky enough to be represented by die-hards like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA-7), the chief sponsors of the bills. But for many of the rest of us, our elected officials are wishy-washy, or even reluctant to sign on to M4A, so our guests give us some strategies for these conversations. Before we get into the objections, we want you to know you don't need to be a policy or health economics expert to talk to your elected officials. If you've been victimized by the American healthcare industry, you're an expert. While we've heard some wild reasons for not supporting M4A, most objections fall into a few basic categories: Downplaying the importance of co-sponsoring the bill "Medicare for All is just a slogan that's not going anywhere so I don't need to engage" "I'm not on a committee of jurisdiction so I can't co-sponsor" "I'm on a committee of jurisdictino so I can't co-sponsor" "I'm in leadership so I don't co-sponsor bills" Strategy: these answers tell you that the suffering of people in their district isn't important enough for them to take action. Help them understand why healthcare for all is so important for their constituents. Bring personal stories; stories can help break down initial barriers and make way for a real conversation. Next time bring even more people and more stories. "I support M4A but I won't co-sponsor" Strategy: consistent follow-up, so they continually feel the pressure. Allow them to ask questions and follow up with information.

Both countries have declared a state of emergency as rescue efforts move to find survivors trapped under rubble, reports the Times of Israel. A second 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck a few minutes later at 4:24 am approximately 60 miles north of the first quake's epicenter, which was centered in the southeastern province of Gaziantep, Turkey, according to the Daily Mail. The first quake's depth was up to 10 miles according to the US Geological Survey and had aftershocks reaching 6.7 on the Richter Scale. Tremors reverberated as far away as Israel and Cairo in Egypt. CBS reports that UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said "We stand ready to provide further support as needed." A total of 76 search and rescue specialists have been dispatched from the UK to help with the efforts. Almost immediately after the quake hit, Turkey asked the European Civil Project and Humanitarian Aid Operations for assistance and aid. The Turkish Interior Minister said, "The main impact of the earthquake fell on Kahramanmaras. After that, there were at least 22 aftershocks, 6 of magnitude over 6. The earthquake was felt in 10 provinces "Two hours after the earthquake, several dozen dead are known. In many cities, multi-storey buildings have been destroyed; it is not yet possible to start clearing the rubble." https://www.theblaze.com/news/prostitutes-sex-workers-catholic-school-oakland Prostitutes solicit sex right outside Catholic elementary school, police handcuffed after California Democrats passed law to protect transgender sex workers Parents of children are up in arms that prostitutes are soliciting sex work right outside a California elementary school. Some are saying that a law passed by California Democrats has handcuffed law enforcement in cracking down on sex workers selling their bodies in broad daylight. KGO-TV conducted an investigation about prostitutes working outside St. Anthony's elementary school in East Oakland. The San Francisco-based news station captured video of sex workers dressed in minimal clothes and stiletto heels walking the streets near the Catholic school to sell their bodies in the middle of the day with students nearby. KGO-TV reported, "The I-Team captured videos along E. 15th Street outside the school gate on four different dates over the past couple weeks showing young women wearing barely any clothing walking along the school sidewalk, the street corners, or directly across from the school. All of the videos were captured as children were being dropped off or walked into school." Concerned parent Rosa Vargas told KGO-TV said she sees prostitutes near the Catholic school "every day, during all periods of the day." Vargas said the sex workers solicit sex so close to the elementary school that they recently "were blocking the entrance of the parking structure" of the school. Oakland City Councilman Noel Gallo noted that he is receiving complaints about prostitutes every week. Gallo stated, "I get the call saying, 'Mr. Gallo I can't get into my home because the pimp is blocking my driveway.' It's constant." Gallo said he has seen up to 20 scantily-clad women walking up and down the street, appearing to engage in prostitution. He revealed that some of the girls are as young as 15 years old. City officials believe some of the women are victims of human trafficking. Some believe that recent construction along a busy highway caused the sex workers to migrate to residential neighborhoods. Rodney Pierre-Antoine – who oversees seven Catholic elementary schools, including St. Anthony's – said the hands of the police "are somewhat handcuffed." Pierre-Antoine is referencing Senate Bill 357, known as the Safer Streets for All Act. SB 357 states: Existing law prohibits soliciting or engaging in an act of prostitution, as specified. Existing law also prohibits loitering in a public place with the intent to commit prostitution, as defined, or directing, supervising, recruiting, or aiding a person who is loitering with the intent to commit prostitution, or collecting or receiving all or part of the proceeds of an act of prostitution. Under existing law, a violation of any of these provisions is a misdemeanor. This bill would repeal those provisions related to loitering with the intent to commit prostitution and would make other conforming changes. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed SB 357 into law in July, and it went into effect on Jan. 1. Police officers told KGO-TV that the new law is prohibiting them from rescuing women who they believe are victims of human trafficking. https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/democrat-led-state-killing-businesses-shrink-secede-several-counties Democrat-led state that’s ‘killing businesses’ could shrink amid push to secede in several counties After 11 Oregon counties approved a preliminary vote to secede from the Democrat-led state, local leaders around the movement are explaining how the urban-rural divide has left them with no other choice. "People in eastern Oregon have felt like their state-level governance has not heard them, has not paid attention to our concerns, and has not been working for eastern Oregon," Greater Idaho Movement spokesperson Matt McCaw said on "Fox & Friends First" Monday. McCaw, along with Oregon business owner Sandie Gilson, supports the idea of having select counties elect to move their state borderlines so state-level governance would come from Idaho. Over the last two years, the Greater Idaho Movement has worked to gather constituent sentiment around the proposal. Business owners like Gilson sounded off on Oregon’s tax policy, detailing the burden taken on by a corporate activity tax. The decision to secede from the state, McCaw argued, would be a "win-win" for all involved parties. The formal state bill, called the Greater Idaho Bill, was introduced to the Oregon legislature on Jan. 10. Idaho state leaders reportedly motioned for formal discussions about the proposal last week, noting the purpose is to "begin official discussions on whether it is feasible to move the Idaho border into eastern Oregon." However, if Idaho and Oregon were to negotiate a border adjustment, U.S. Congress would have to sign off on it, in addition to both Oregon and Idaho legislatures. The plan would create what would become the nation’s third-largest state geographically. https://newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/alex-christy/2023/02/06/study-five-months-late-night-93-liberal-guests-1-conservative Five Months Of Late Night: 93 Liberal Guests, 1 Conservative The late-night comedy shows ended 2022 with a unanimously liberal guest count and that trend continued until the very last day of January, a NewsBusters study has revealed. MRC analysts found that from Labor Day through January 31, liberal guests outnumbered conservative guests 93 to 1. It was 99 percent liberal and/or Democrat. The one exception was My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell who Jimmy Kimmel put on to mock. This is follow up to MRC’s late night guest election campaign study. The study looked at the daily six late night comedy shows: ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Late Late Show with James Corden, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and 2023 temp hosts. Fox's Gutfeld! was not included. MRC analysts divided guests into two categories: partisan officials and then journalists and celebrities. When it came to the count of politicians, the count was 27 Democrats to 0 Republicans. Stephen Colbert led with ten, Noah was second with seven, Meyers was third at four, Fallon came in fourth with three, Kimmel placed fifth at two, and Corden was sixth and last with one. Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Texas Democratic gubernatorial nominee Beto O’Rourke, and former First Lady Michelle Obama were the guests who appeared multiple times during the length of the study. Obama's appearance on Colbert was split into multiple episodes and is counted as multiple appearances and was the only guest to appear three times. As for journalists and celebrities, the results were 66 liberals to 1 conservative. Stephen Colbert was again the most partisan with 21. Trevor Noah and The Daily Show temp hosts came in second at 17 (11 for Noah, 1 for Leslie Jones, 2 for Wanda Sykes, 3 for D.L. Hughley). Meyers and Fallon tied for bronze with ten. Kimmel again placed fifth with seven and Corden was the least partisan with one. Accountable2You Jesus is Lord. Greg Baylor: How a proposed marriage law targets religious liberty

The Respect for Marriage Act "poses a pretty significant risk to religious Americans, both individuals and organizations. Like the Equality Act, it hopes to cement into federal law the idea that marriage is not the institution, defined by God, consisting of the union of one man and one woman. It goes, obviously, far beyond that...The first thing it does is to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act that was passed by huge bipartisan majorities and signed by Pres. Clinton in the 1990s. It also imposes an obligation on many — including, potentially, religious organizations — to recognize same-sex marriage. And that's the piece that creates a lot of the religious liberty problems. And then the last thing it does is to define marriage for federal government purpose," said Greg Baylor, director of Center for Religious Schools and Senior Counsel for Government Affairs at Alliance Defending Freedom.  Follow @GregBaylor on Twitter and listen to previous Respect Life Radio interviews with him: "Fairness for All Act a bad compromise on religious liberty" in 2020 and "Equality Act an assault on religious freedom" in 2019.

In September 2021, California SB 357 was passed by the House and the Assembly and for reasons unknown was held on Senator Weiner's Desk in Sacramento. The Gov. Newsom recall election came and went and then the June 7th Primary Elections were held. Almost ten months after the passing of the bill it was sent to Governor Newsom's desk and it was signed. It is scheduled to become effective January 1, 2023. Already our communities are seeing the negative effects of this bill. SB 357 is called the Safer Streets for All Act. The bill rewrote the penal code of "Loitering for purposes of soliciting prostitution" and stated that law enforcement can not intervene with individuals who are loitering for the purposes of soliciting for prostitution (it does not define if you are soliciting to buy or sell). The ACLU made this statement when proposing the bill: "SB357 will move California one step closer to acknowledging sex workers as deserving of full dignity and respect." During this show we will discuss the impact of that bill which will go into effect in six weeks. Pimps are already starting to bring their girls into California for solicitation. In many of our cities we have started to see a significant increase in the number of individuals soliciting sex walking the streets in scantily clad outfits . We are greatly concerned that while this bill does protect the sex worker from being targeted by law enforcement, we are concerned about who is going to protect the sex worker from pimps, gangs and organized crime? Who is going to protect our children and neighborhoods from being invaded by street sex sellers? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/million-kids/support

Nietfeld, who as a teenager spent time in foster care and living out of her car, talks about the American urge to view suffering as something that makes you stronger. She reads from her new book, Acceptance; reflects on being expected to shape a story about overcoming hardship to access an Ivy League education; and explains how she ultimately chose to resist simpler narratives of grit and resilience.  To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). We discuss how UCLA Health approaches these topics and some of the important insights she has regarding leadership principles to improve the U.S. healthcare system. From a young age, Dr. Briggs knew she wanted to become a doctor from a very young age and how she was exposed to the need for changes in the healthcare system, especially among the minority community. Her passion grew through her involvement in various organizations throughout college. And it was during her time at Harvard Medical School when she decided to go into public health policy and systems redesign. She also shares about her experience as a woman of color and the obstacles she faced and overcame to get to where she is today. In her role with UCLA Health, Dr. Briggs is charged with taking care of people within the organization, their patients and their communities. As a healthcare system, their #1 role is to provide equitable care. Within the organization, she makes sure they are promoting an environment that is inclusive, respectful, and celebratory of diversity. KP and Dr. Briggs discuss the intersectionality of health equity in how we treat patients and equity, diversity, and inclusion within our organizations—and how both are required in today's healthcare. In order to advance health equity, Dr. Briggs believes you have to start with the people providing the services. She expands by talking about the process she went through to ensure that equity principles are being interwoven into the day-to-day practices and procedures to get to the systemic change they are looking to achieve. The two also discuss the financial impact of reducing health disparities and how it drives the financial game plan of an institution. Dr. Briggs dives into the responsibilities of health systems to being part of the communities and addressing the social drivers that play a larger role in overall health outcomes. She shares a couple practical initiatives of UCLA Health, including the Homeless Healthcare Collaborative, which deploys medically equipped vans throughout LA community to treat those experiencing homelessness. As a true data expert, Dr. Briggs also gives listeners insights into how UCLA Health is using a robust approach to better understand who they're serving, how well they're serving, and any possible inequities that need to be addressed. KP and Dr. Briggs round out the conversation by discussing landmark federal legislation that she has played a key role in drafting, including the Equal Care for All Act, which is the first piece of legislation that holds providers and organizations accountable for inequitable outcomes. Connect with Dr. Briggs:https://twitter.com/MedellBriggsMDThe Visionary Leader: 7 Solutions to Implement Successful Change in Modern HealthcareConnect with KP:linkedin.com/in/kaakpema-kp-yelpaala-379b269/https://twitter.com/inonhealthinonhealth.com/podcastinonhealth.com/

LDS leaders talk a lot about religious liberty, but is it really at risk? | Episode 231

To say that leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often talk about religious freedom would be, well, an understatement. It is a common theme from the top apostles on down and appears to be a favorite topic of Dallin Oaks, first counselor in the governing First Presidency and a former Utah Supreme Court justice. Recently, President Camille Johnson, global head of the children's Primary organization and herself a high-powered attorney, picked up on the theme as well in an address in Iowa. The church has been calling for a balancing of religious liberty and LGBTQ protections. It succeeded in passing such legislation in Utah and has pushed for similar measures in Arizona and Georgia. It also backs the proposed federal Fairness for All Act, which a number of prominent LGBTQ and civil rights groups oppose. So why all the attention on religious freedoms? Are they really under threat? If so, from where or whom? And is compromise not only possible but also preferable? On this week's show, Sarah Barringer Gordon, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert on religious liberty who has written notably about Mormon history, explores those questions and more. She notes, among other points, that the issue has been politicized in the legislative arena and states that while some perceived risks to faith freedoms may be more imagined than real.

On July 12, 2020, the USS Bonhomme Richard assault ship caught fire, and burned for more than four days straight, sending smoke and dangerous chemicals billowing all across San Diego. Just short of a month later on August 4, C3 Board Director and Strategic Consultant Ryan Karlsgodt spoke with David Flores, Air Quality Campaign Director for the Environmental Health Coalition, about the impact the fire had on the bayfront communities and why it took so long to make sure residents could be completely confident in returning home again and safety breathing in the outside air. He discusses how economic levels and disparity played a role in our reaction, and ways we can learn from this fire to protect our more vulnerable population in the future.   Timestamps: [3:09] Before working at the EHC, David worked in San Ysidro and focused on neighborhood infrastructure and border issues. [6:23] David discusses the main sources of pollution that these predominantly Black and Brown communities face. We often don't account for how much traffic is created by shipping, trade, and tourism. This results in bad air quality, but yet everything we need, from bananas to sugar to cars, all needs to be transported through diesel trucks. [10:05] David and Ryan discuss the Environmental Justice for All Act, and how it forces government agencies to come into communities and assess the cumulative impact of certain decisions to make sure that environmental racism is not at play. Would it help? David said that it may take time and refinement, but it's at least a start. [11:16] The life expectancy of the community can change by zip code, and one factor is air quality. [12:33] The USS Bonhomme was a $750 million assault ship that the Navy was renovating. The fire broke out on July 12 while the ship was undergoing maintenance, and took four days to extinguish. They tried to contact Air Pollution Control, but it was difficult to get a hold of anyone. They worked with the Mayor of National City, and she put out the first public statement notice to stay indoors in both English and Spanish. That was the only official statement from a public source for hours, and David sees that as a first of many misses. [14:02] David discusses how the EHC responded, and their call for residents in frontline communities to evacuate posed a problem. Not only is this area a lower-income community, but the pandemic posed an issue of needing to be safe and still social distance. [18:17] Dangerous and toxic chemicals still lingered in the air, and David feels as though it was a complete miss and fail that there wasn't more data captured in a timely fashion during this regional emergency. [20:56] What is the Navy now saying about the impact and promises they have made to the surrounding communities? Yes, there are changes that are being discussed at many levels between the Navy and local leadership, along with the Port Commissioners and the EHC. [25:23] David feels it would have been an extremely different and swifter response if the Santa Ana winds had blown into Coronado. [30:31] Air and air pollution don't have Border Laws to stop it from moving around, and what happens at the Port doesn't stay at the Port. [32:09] EHC thinks there is still a lot of data to be learned, and this could be a way to help other impacted communities during and after a fire.   About C-3 In its 60 years of existence, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) has brought together local thought leaders from planning, design, policy, academia, community development, and more to address our region's distinctive and pressing land use challenges. Thank you for joining this week's edition of the Albany Update. Recent conversation has revolved around the so-called Equality Act. As previously reported, the (In)Equality Act passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and has advanced to the U.S. Senate. Allies across the nation are working to make sure the measure falls shorts of the likely ten Republican votes it would need to become law. However, there is a new threat developing. It's called the Fairness for All Act and unfortunately too many Republicans are falling for this euphemistically named proposal. Also, on the federal level, Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) is taking heat for a line of questioning he directed to President Joe Biden's nominee for Assistant Secretary of Health. We'll discuss. Then, turning our attention back to state issues, there is a lot to cover regarding the troubles coming at Governor Andrew Cuomo—all self-inflicted wounds I might add. And while the pressure is growing on Andrew Cuomo, he has apparently cut a deal with the Democratic Majorities in the Senate and the Assembly that will not end, but extend, his pandemic superpowers. And finally, we learned that a national Christian adoption agency has caved to political correctness and will coordinate adoptions for same-sex couples. On Friday, Republican Representative Chris Stewart of Utah introduced the Fairness for All Act, which, as Christianity Today reports, “would prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination in employment, housing, and places of public accommodation, including retail stores, banks, and health care service providers.” In essence, just like the proposed Equality Act supported by House Democrats, the Fairness for All Act would place sexual orientation and gender identity on par with race and religion as protected classes under the Civil Rights Act. But there's a major difference between Fairness for All and the Equality Act. The Fairness for All Act seeks to exempt religious organizations such as churches and nonprofits. So, for example, “Churches wouldn't be required to host same-sex weddings. Christian schools wouldn't have to hire LGBT people. Adoption agencies could receive federal funding even if they turned away same-sex couples looking to raise children.”          As such, Rep. Stewart and supporters of the Fairness for All Act see the bill as balancing religious freedom and LGBT rights.          Now I believe Fairness for All is a well-intentioned bill. And I believe that its supporters are truly trying to find ways to compromise with LGBT rights in order to preserve our religious liberties in the end. But this Act is the wrong piece of legislation at the wrong time. The Act would enshrine into law something that simply is not true, and for Christians that's got to be a non-starter: that sexual orientation and gender identity are equal to race, that they are somehow immutable, something someone is born with. As my colleague Shane Morris discussed with me on BreakPoint This Week, the “born with” idea is a useful fiction created by the early proponents of the gay-rights movement to win public approval for their cause. They succeeded, of course, but it does not make the fiction any more true. Second, the Act is addressing a non-issue. Back in the 1960s, the Civil Rights Act addressed a very real problem: There were entire swaths of the country where African Americans couldn't find a hotel room, buy gas, or get a meal. And so public accommodations were necessary so African Americans could fully participate in society. That most certainly is not the case today with the so-called “sexual minorities.” When two men targeted cakeshop owner Jack Phillips to force him to design a cake for their same-sex wedding, they knew full well that there were plenty of cakeshops nearby that would gladly do what they ask. This raises another problem with the Fairness for All Act: Its exemptions “would not apply to for-profit businesses with 14 or fewer employees.” In other words, if you're a Christian business owner, and not a church or a religious non-profit, you're on the wrong side of the law—outside of the Act's protections. Meaning Fairness for All isn't really fairness for all.          And, as I explained on BreakPoint This Week, this act continues the ghastly idea that people of faith who insist on religious liberty are the bad guys. That they are bigots who need to be “exempted” precisely because they want to deny the rights of others.          The Fairness for All has its roots in what's called the Utah Compromise, which was a state measure largely championed by the LDS church. It hasn't worked in Utah and it's not a good idea for federal legislation. In fact, these ideas were birthed under a previous presidential administration openly hostile to religious liberty—and when it looked like the next administration would be as well. But elections matter. Federal courts and the Supreme Court are growing more conservative and more respectful of religious liberty. Now is simply not the time to give up the rights of individual believers in order to preserve the freedoms of religious institutions alone. Now, do I think the Fairness for All Act will pass? No. Nor does Rep. Stewart. The Democrats hold the House and see no need to compromise at all on LGBT rights and religious rights. And while there may be a way to truly balance these rights in the future, The Fairness for All Act isn't it.

John Stonestreet and Shane Morris discuss the "Fairness for All Act," which was introduced into the House on Friday. Despite the Act's name, John and Shane argue that it does not in fact protect the freedoms of all. And no matter how well-intentioned the Act's supporters are in seeking to strike a balance between LGBT rights and religious freedom, the Act gives simply gives away too much. They also discuss the LGBT movement's vicious attacks on one of its own: Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who dared to ring a bell for the Salvation Army in the past. Will this absolutist insistence on ideological purity backfire? And since when did the organization that cares for more homeless LGBT youth than any other become a sore spot for LGBT advocates?  Finally, how is it that nearly three quarters of British students have never heard of Mozart? What do we lose when we ignore our civilization's roots--such as classic literature and music?

Listen NowAccording to a recent Kaiser/Washington Post survey 59 percent of Americans support Medicare for All (M4A).  Per a March New England Journal of Medicine poll 61 percent of physicians said single payer would make it easier for them to deliver cost-effective, quality health care.   Currently, before the House is legislation titled the "Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act" with over 120 sponsors.  (The legislation has been introduced every session since 2003.)   The House has recently also formed a Medicare for All caucus with 70 Democratic members and if the Democrats win back the House this November they have promised M4A hearings.  The Senate has a parallel bill, the "Medicare for All Act of 2017," currently with 16 cosponsors, several of whom are potential 2020 presidential candidates.  Though there is, again, substantial criticism of M4A, e.g., CMS Administrator, Seema Verma, recently denounced it as "government run socialized health care" (an odd complaint since that is exactly what the current Medicare and Medicaid programs are).  Because of the disruption, dismantling or sabotage of the ACA under the Trump administration and moreover because health care continues to be ever increasingly unaffordable (and bankrupt, the Medicare Part A Trust Fund is now projected to be insolvent in 2026), as is frequently phrased, M4A is, again, on the table. During this 37 minute conversation Professor Friedman provides a general definition of Medicare for All healthcare, how it would be financed and how savings be derived and what amount.  He explains what is current public opinion, what are credible criticisms of M4A and what promising single payer efforts are underway in the states.   Dr. Gerald Friedman is Professor and Undergraduate Program Director of Economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  Prior to, he worked as research staff for the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union.  Professor Friedman is the author of multiple books and articles on labor relations and healthcare economics.  He has been a correspondent to television and media outlets, a consultant to labor unions and has drafted funding plans for campaigns for single payer health insurance in several states including New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Oregon and Washington and a federal plan for the US.  He serves on the Board of Advisers to the Business Initiative for Health Policy.  Professor Friedman earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia College and his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard.  This is a public episode. Show Notes for Podcast Seven of seX & whY, Part 1 Thank you for Alyson McGregor for correctly pointing out that although the NIH, as of January 2016, does require its basic scientists to include both males and female animals in their grant proposals it is not called the “Research for All Act”. The Research for All Act of 2014 is actually a bill sponsored by Congressman Jim Cooper of Tennessee that would require, among other things, that the FDA have access to subgroup analysis of data by sex prior to granting expedited approval of a new product. As of now, this bill has not passed. Host: Jeannette Wolfe Guests: Dr. Neha Raukar, Emergency and Sports Medicine Physician Katherine Snedaker, Executive Director of Pink Concussions Topic: Sex and Gender Differences in Concussions Take home points The research behind traumatic brain injury is rapidly evolving as technology advances are allowing us to better understand how the human brain works and the nuances between male and female brains We still have a long way to go because most of the basic science surrounding traumatic brain injury has been conducted on male animals In 2015 the NIH passed The Research for All Act that requires NIH funded basic science to include both male and female animals or be able to justify their exclusion Men, compared to women, have an overall greater incidence of traumatic brain injury and this is likely associated with differences in risk tolerance and exposure to activities associated with potential injury In situations in which risk exposure is the same- like playing basketball or soccer- after sustaining the same impact, women appear to have a lower neurobiological threshold to obtain a traumatic brain injury than men Definitive/proportionate reasons for these differences are not fully understood, however possible factors include: Weaker neck muscles Decreased neurobiological threshold for injury Hormonal differences Reporting bias- this theory is quite controversial and it was emphasized throughout the podcast that many athletes, especially at elite levels- will underreport symptoms regardless of their biological sex Hormonal influences- it appears that a woman's vulnerability to traumatic brain injury may vary depending upon where she is within her menstrual cycle (with injury during the luteal phase leading to increased concussive symptoms) or whether or not she is on oral contraceptives (with some evidence that women on OCPs having decreased symptoms). Symptoms of concussion can be broken down into different categories: Cognitive- issues with memory/concentration/fogginess Emotional- anxiety, irritability/sadness Somatic- headaches/ light noise sensitivity/nausea and vomiting Vesitibular/Ocular- balance, eye tracking Sleep References: http://www.pinkconcussions.com/science/concussion-info/ Collins, C.L., Fletcher, E.N., Fields, S.K. et al.
