Austin is joined by renowned mycologist, author and researcher Paul Stamets, along with Pamela Kryskow, M.D., both co-founders of MycoMedica Life Sciences, PBC. A dedicated hiker and explorer, his passion is to preserve and protect as many ancestral strains of mushrooms as possible from these pristine woodlands. His research is considered breakthrough by thought leaders for creating a paradigm shift for helping ecosystems worldwide. In this episode of the Daily Mushroom Podcast, we have Cory Firth, Executive Director of The Canadian Psychedelic Association and founder of DoseDay! Cory opens about his battle with mental health and shares his experience with psychedelics in his quest to find meaning in his life. He also talks about how he got himself into a 7 day ayahuasca retreat and what that journey gave him.
Back in the ‘90s, Dr. Pamela Kryskow was a forestry firefighter in the summertime while earning her undergraduate degree in criminology. But being a first responder, she discovered, was something she had a natural affinity for, as well as something that felt like so much more than a summer gig. So, she became a firefighter in the Greater Vancouver area for the next eight years. And it was her work responding to medical emergencies, in particular, that left a mark the most. “I witnessed a lot of stuff,” she recalls. “I saw a lot of people get really injured and hurt, not only physically, but also there's a lot of moral fatigue and injury out there.” Facilitating healing for others, she found, was something she wanted to dedicate more of herself to. She went back to school, this time for medicine, with a focus on the areas of health that often feel the least defined (and the most treacherous because of that) — mental health and chronic pain. Today, she specializes in family medicine and rural emergency medicine. And, as a founding member of the Canadian Psychedelic Association, she also specializes in things like ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and research on psilocybin, MDMA and microdosing. “I started realizing that if I was really going to get a big subset of my patients better, I needed better tools,” she says. “That didn't include giving them a drug that they'd need to take for the rest of their life. It was a contemplation of, ‘Are there medicines out there that they maybe only need once or twice to get better?” In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Dr. Kryskow talk about how she and other medical experts are integrating psychedelics into their functional medicine practices, and why that integration is the future of healthcare. What You'll Learn: How her criminology degree helped her to understand the war on drugs was mostly about “cultural control,” and why more people in medicine should be mad about that Why a session with psychedelics is especially therapeutic for those freshly off the heels of a critical incident (hint: it has to do with your amygdala) Why she calls MDMA a “no brainer” for PTSD, as well as an effective tool for couples and family counseling And much more! Favorite Quote: “When you have a trauma, and you keep going down a pathway of reliving it and analyzing it, you get this repetitive injury pathway in your brain. Psychedelics can help you make a new pathway.” — Dr. Pamela Kryskow Connect with Dr. Kryskow: Roots to Thrive LinkedIn Canadian Psychedelic Association How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based on creating and selling high-quality CBD products that heal mind and body alike. All bodies are beautiful. All healthy lifestyle changes are beautiful. And for those who choose to pursue a goal of losing weight for the right reasons, there is a new ingredient showing promising results — psilocybin. While known for mental and spiritual support, psilocybin's benefit can transcend into the physical realm by way of mental health, as well as biophysically. We discuss the mental reframe that can support a weight loss regime and how psilocybin itself has appetite suppressant properties. We are joined by Trevor Miller who is on the board of directors for MAPS (Multidisciplinary association for psychedelic studies) and has been advocating for psychedelic therapies for years. Trevor is now on the advisory board for NeonMind Biosciences, a Canadian company who is involved in some cutting edge research on the topic of psilocybin and weight loss, and the belief that lives change when minds change. For years, researchers have drawn a line from oil sands activity to recurring rare forms of cancer in Fort Chipewyan and Fort McKay. Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam, whistleblower Dr. John O'Connor, and James Turk from Ryerson University's Centre for Free Expression explain why they think provincial and federal governments haven't taken this health threat seriously. How much do you know about psychedelics? How could Psilocybin ("magic mushrooms"), Ayahuasca, and other approaches assist in effective treatments, including for mental health?
