Sumner is joined on this week's Hard Agree by his old comics industry pal, Professor Ed Catto. The always-cheerful-and-upbeat Ed has fulfilled many roles in the comics business: illustrator, marketeer, entrepreneur, founder & managing director at the Agendae consuting agency, co-owner of Captain Action Enterprises, pop culture columnist at Comic Mix and professor & instructor at Ithaca College. He's also one of the nicest guys Sumner has ever met - and their freewheeling conversation in this episode covers: Ed's diverse career history; his lifelong love of comics; working with Stan Lee; working with the Bonfire Agency; teaching at Ithaca College; working with Joe Ahearn and his business partners on Captain Action, DC Comics' classic short-lived 1960s Captain Action series (created by Jim Shooter, Wally Wood & Gil Kane) and IDW's beautiful collected edition of those comics (edited by the mighty Scott Dunbier), the ongoing brilliance of comics writer Mark Waid, the beauty & brilliance of James Robinson's Starman and Giffen, DeMatteis & Maguire's Justice League and Brubaker & Phillips' Reckless, the majesty of Will Eisner; Michael T Gilbert's groundbreaking research into the life of Eisner's supernaturally-gifted letterer on The Spirit: Abe Kanegson; Ed's own tireless work as a leading comics journalist & historian – and the power & importance of aspirational positivity. In this episode we are honoured to be joined by one of the most prolific The Phantom Daily newspaper strip artists, and the only one to share his initials with our hero!Keith Williams picked up the strip after Sy Barry retired and, together with penciller George Olesen, worked on the strip from 1994-2005. In total, he inked 32 Daily stories and was at the helm when the 1996 Billy Zane film premiered. Post 2005, Keith also inked The Phantom stories for both Moonstone (the Captain Action crossover stories) and Egmont. Armed with a host of queries from Patreon supporters who were given the opportunity to submit their questions, Jermayn and Dan are able to have a truly wide-ranging conversation with the New York based artist. In the podcast Keith chats about his heroes in the comic art world and shares the time he sought advice from his teacher and mentor, the legendary Will Eisner - "Should I take up this offer of doing The Phantom strip?"It's fascinating to hear how Keith faced the daunting task of taking over from Sy Barry, the man who many phans consider to be the greatest Phantom artist of all time. Keith also reflects on working with three different authors in Lee Falk, Claes Reimerthi, and Tony DePaul. One particularly compelling part of the conversation is as Keith reflects on being an African-American artist working on what some critics perceive to be a comic strip troubled with a white supremacist hero and other racist undertones. We know you will enjoy this conversation with a very unassuming and humble man, who played a crucial role in the journey of our hero. As always - Happy Phantoming!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chroniclechamber)

Time Codes: 00:00:25 - Introduction 00:02:19 - Setup of interview 00:04:09 - Interview with Michael Eury 01:27:46 - Wrap up 01:28:38 - Contact us "Wonderful, warm blanket of camp" On this interview episode Derek talks with the Eisner Award-nominated editor-in-chief of Back Issue magazine Michael Eury. His new book Hero-a-Go-Go: Campy Comic Books, Crimefighters and Culture of the Swinging Sixties comes out from TwoMorrows Publishing next week, and the two discuss this project's genesis and the significance of the camp cultural phenomenon. This text stands out because Eury doesn't limit himself to just comics, but instead he looks at camp from a wider vista, revealing its convergence among television, film, toys, cartoons, music, and everyday consumable products. In Hero-a-Go-Go, readers will find in-depth discussions of such subjects as Metamorpho, The Inferior Five, Jerry Lewis comics, Monkeemania, Not Brand Echh, Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Herbie the Fat Fury, Captain Action, the TV Green Hornet, M.F. Enterprise's Captain Marvel, The Cowsills, JFK and LBJ in comics, the ill-fated Harvey Thrillers, and, of course, the Batman television series. As Michael reveals over the course of this interview, Hero-a-Go-Go is intended for diverse audiences, written as both an informed introduction and a chronicle for remembrance.

Michael presents his first ever pro interview. This week Views is very happy to present a conversation with Michael Eury, former edior at both DC and Dark Horse and current edior of TwoMorrows' BACK ISSUE magazine. Mr. Eury talks about how Adam West got him into comics, his time at DC, the Who's Who Binder Edition (covered last episode oddly enough), his stint at Dark Horse, his opinion of the BARB WIRE film and how Captain Action brought him back to comics publishing. The audio quality of the interview is not spectactular, but should improve if you throw on some headphones. And keep an ear out for a guest appearance by Michael Bailey's wife Rachel, who, for a variety of reasons, all justified, was a little annoyed with the host at the time.
