De meeste definities verwijzen naar het onderzoek van Cas Mudde, die populisten duidts als: “Parties that endorse the set of ideas that society is ultimately separated into two homogeneous and antagonistic groups, “the pure people” versus “the corrupt elite”, and which argue that politics should be an expression of the volonté générale, or general will, of the people.” Mudde, 2004. Is populisme ooit “goed” of terecht? Between June 6th and 9th, 27 member states held elections for the European Union's parliament with over 300 million eligible voters. However only 51% voted, an unsurprising figure as democratic participation declines across the West. Equally unsurprising were the results of the vote, which, as always, resulted in the two major centrist blocs, the European People's Party and the Socialists and Democrats, maintaining their majority, with some support from the Green and Liberal groups. However, far-right and nationalist parties performed very well, with the two major groupings gaining seats and nearly 20% of all MEPs. This outcome was predicted in the pre-election polls and hasn't shocked many pundits, but thereality of an increased normalisation of nationalist politics in the European Parliament may be sobering for some. For 20 years now, nationalist and far/extreme right parties have slowly but surely gained electoral and political legitimacy. In recent years, such parties have won elections in the Netherlands, Italy, and Slovakia, and they sit in government in Finland, Sweden, and a few other countries as well. In all member states, nationalist parties sit in parliament, and their rhetoric has entered mainstream political discourses. In France, this outcome has had especially profound repercussions, as President Macron has now called for snap elections in response to the major losses experienced by his Renaissance party to Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella's National Rally party. How did Europe, and indeed many other countries in the democratic world, come to this? Are mainstream politicians getting it wrong, or are they just of poor quality? Is there a better way forward? To answer these and many other such questions, Ilana Bet-El is joined by Catherine Fieschi, an expert on populism and European politics, in a lively and deeply probing conversation. This episode was recorded on June 13 2024.NotesCatherine's inspiration: “Homage to Catalonia” George OrwellCatherine's book “Populocracy"Global social media users (April 2024): 5.07 billion, equating to 62.6% of global population. Hard right parties are sweeping Europe and analysts fear they will do well in this week's elections across the EU. How deeply are radical right parties, with their immigration and culture war fixations and indulgence of Putin, distorting politics from Spain to Germany and Poland and beyond? What does their success mean for the EU's stability and the defence of Ukraine? And can the populist wave be stopped? Gavin Esler talks to political analyst Catherine Fieschi – author of Populocracy: The Tyranny of Authenticity and the Rise of Populism –  and German public broadcaster ARD's London Bureau Chief Annette Dittert about the defining threat of our age: extremist populism. Geert Wilders has been described as the Dutch Donald Trump. Earlier this month his far-right Freedom Party pulled off a surprise election victory in the Netherlands. Following Mr Wilder's win, we're looking at what's driving right-wing populism in Europe. Italy has a right-wing populist prime minister. In Hungary there's Viktor Orban - prime minister since 2010 - with his particular brand of nationalist populism, and in Finland the far-right Finns party is now part of the governing coalition. Are some of the factors that secured Geert Wilders' win also what is helping other right-wing populists in Europe? In a European context, does right-wing populism differ from far-rights politics ? Why are parts of Europe drifting right? What are the factors behind this? What's driving right-wing populism in Europe and what does it mean for the continent?Shaun Ley is joined by:Catherine Fieschi, a comparative political analyst specialising in populism, far right and authoritarian politics and a Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute in Florence.
