Join Emma Kenny as we delve into the sinister world of Charles Schmid, the self-styled "Pied Piper" who lured his victims with a charismatic facade. This episode dissects the chilling murders that terrorized Tucson in the 1960s, the unsettling charisma of Schmid, and the eventual unraveling of his crimes. We'll look at the psychological aspects that drove Schmid, the cultural impact of his case, and the lessons learned about the influence of personality in criminal behavior.
In this weeks episode the pod heads to Tucson, AZ to talk about yummy Patrick Dempsey and shitty Charles Schmid. Can't Buy Me Love is an 80's teenage Rom Com about a nerd named Ronald (Patrick Dempsey) who comes to the rescue of popular neighbor Cindy (Amanda Peterson) with a little quid pro quo… He'll help her out of a pickle if she agrees to pretend to be his girlfriend for one month. With a killer soundtrack and sizzling chemistry we think this is deserving of a rewatch. Then Averyn continues with a tale of Tucson teens who were so beguiled by charming, strange, tin cans in his boots wearing Charles “Smitty” Schmid, that even after three teenage girls went missing and Shitty Smitty bragged about killing them no one said a word. Charles Howard Schmid Jr. (July 8, 1942 – March 30, 1975), also known as the Pied Piper of Tucson, was an American serial killer whose crimes were detailed by journalist Don Moser in an article featured in the March 4, 1966, issue of Life magazine. Schmid's criminal career later formed the basis for "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?", a short story by Joyce Carol Oates. In 2008, The Library of America selected Moser's article for inclusion in its two-century retrospective of American true crime literature. Well dear listeners, we have another shitbag for you today. Charles Schmid, who also went by "Smitty," because of course he did, was technically a serial killer. But like, he's the serial killer equivalent of a dude showing up for a gangbang with a micropenis. Sure he meets the bare minimum requirement for the job, but we're all going to laugh at him. Also he was apparently super charming, or women back in his day were retarded. Either way I hate him. Anyways, join us in making fun of him, and enjoy!

For our second episode this week, Ash brings us the case of Charles Schmid aka the Pied Piper of Tucson. This case, dare we say, may be one of the wildest rides we've brought you along for in quite some time. Charles was really a vibe in the 60's, at least according to the youths of the day. He would change his appearance quite drastically when he turned 18 and it was at that moment he became a hot commodity. However, he was one of the most evil, callous assholes on the planet. He was responsible for the deaths of three young girls, one being his girlfriend at the time, and some say there's a fourth victim. Buckle up, buttercups. The Pied Piper fairytale takes a sinister turn in this case. We all know how the story goes - the magical piper who tricks all the rats in town to follow him out. Charles Schmid took this a bit too far. He lured women out and killed them, just for the sake of it. They never knew what was coming until they were staring into his dark eyes and realised there was no humanity left in there. Listen to find out how an athletic, star student went on to become a serial killer by the age of 23... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Sarah continues her streak of RPS and shares the story of the Pied Piper of Tucson, and professional wig wearer Charles Schmid. Melissa tells Sarah about the meth bender murders of John Painter and Barbara Martin.
This week we explore Arizona! Arizona wows the world with the beauty of the grand canyon. We're hoping to wow you with horror in this weeks episode! Maggie starts us off with a tale of a spoiled douche bag who thought he could get away with murder, and did for a little while. Amber then tells us about a pair of robbers turned murderers who struck completely at random Sources: https://murderpedia.org/male.S/s/schmid-charles-howard.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Schmid https://murderpedia.org/male.J/j/jones-robert-glen.htm https://murderpedia.org/male.J/images/jones_robert_glen/cr980537.pdf
Charles Schmid was known as many things - a trickster, a liar, an egomaniac. He never worked and instead he survived off of handouts from his parents. He also thought himself to be quite the womanizer. Yet, standing at just 5 feet 3 inches tall, Schmid fit the colloquial idea of the “Napoleon Complex,” making up for his feelings of inferiority due to his height with boisterous, outrageous claims. One night he was on such a roll that he claimed he wanted to kill a girl. It wouldn’t be long until Schmid boasted about murdering 3 young girls and police would finally catch the Pied Piper of Tucson.
This episode we talk about Charles "Smitty" Schmid who coaxed girls into bed with his daredevil ways and his music. He would also change his appearance to seem like a tough guy roaming the streets. His #1 girl and his friends would bring other women into their friend group for Smitty's enjoyment and caused them to meet their end.
Charles Schmid, Jr. was a narcissistic young man living in Tucson, Arizona in the early 1960's. He had fantasies of becoming a rockstar. He wanted to see what it was like to kill and if he could murder and get away with it. At least three girls were brutally murdered by him before his bragging of the killings and showing friends the bodies eventually got him caught. Welcome to 2019! This is Death by Champagne, the podcast here to keep you up at night! We are back with one of our longest episodes containing some really intense true crime to start off the year. Liv covers the not all that well known serial killer in St. Louis, Maury Troy Travis while Mack covers the insane story of the Pied Piper of Tucson, Charles Schmid. This episode contains foul language, discussions about rape, child murder, torture, and a really graphic description about animal cruelty. We’ll do our best to stay on track, but the bottles are popped!
The year was 1965. The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and The Righteous Brothers filled the airwaves. Television shows like "The Adventures of Ozzy and Harriett" and "The Andy Griffith Show" mirrored the innocence of life in the dusty city of Tucson, Az. But the sunbaked desert surrounding Tucson was hiding a sinister secret. A psychopath names Charles Schmid, later nicknamed the "Pied Piper of Tucson" by Life Magazine, would steal that innocence away, along with the lives of three beautiful teenage girls. In this firsthand account written in 1967, Richard Bruns shares the evolution of his friendship with Schmid, the details of getting involved way in over his head, and how he finally summoned the courage to blow the whistle to end the deadly rampage that shocked the nation and changed the city of Tucson forever. Listen here as Maradel Gale, Frank Stowell, and Charles Schmid describe the upcoming May 21st Bainbridge Island Environmental Conference at Islandwood, where the topic will be: “Changing the Nature of Puget Sound: A Look at the Impacts of Industrial Aquaculture.” The event runs from 12:30 to 5:30pm. As they explain, “industrial aquaculture” includes two commercial activities which, if unchecked, could dramatically impact Bainbridge shorelines -- shellfish farming on beaches, and in-water pens for farmed fish like Atlantic salmon. Seating for the conference is limited. As of the podcast recording date, there are only about a dozen seats left. To reserve a seat, register at the Sustainable Bainbridge website or at the Islandwood website. Our podcast guests include: Maradel Gale, a founding board member and current officer of Sustainable Bainbridge, and a director of Bainbridge Beach Naturalists, which offers walking tours of the marine life along Bainbridge shorelines; Frank Stowell, a long-time member of the the Association of Bainbridge Communities (ABC), president of the ABC Foundation, and the moderator of the Environmental Conference; and Charles Schmid, one of the founders of the ABC organization in 1978, and a continuing officer. The Conference will include an exhibition in the main reception area at Islandwood, representing many of the local and regional environmental organizations co-sponsoring the event. Presentations will include: An overview of the impacts of industrial aquaculture A talk by a marine ecologist dispelling the myths of aquaculture An attorney explaining the legal aspects, and describing the “Shellfish Initiative” An explanation of regulatory gaps in the permitting of aquaculture A talk on Atlantic salmon net pens -- friend or foe? An overview of pesticide use in shellfish aquaculture A panel discussion about impacts for Puget Sound homeowners Final thoughts on how you can get involved in local efforts The primary sponsor is ABC, and, in addition to Sustainable Bainbridge, there are more than a dozen additional co-sponsors including the Bainbridge Island Land Trust, the City of Bainbridge Island; Kitsap Audubon; and a committee of the Sierra Club. In this podcast, Maradel explains why this topic matters on Bainbridge Island and compliments the City for significant and valuable improvements in its shoreline regulations. Frank discusses the notable history of neighborhood and community organizing -- and environmental activism -- on Bainbridge Island. Charles notes that this is the 14th environmental conference on Bainbridge, and offers highlights of prior conferences. This is BCB's first podcast in its new Media Arts Studio at BARN. The public grand opening of the newly constructed BARN center will be Saturday, June 3rd from 10am to 4pm. In this podcast, three of the leading members of the 1991 "home rule" movement to form a Bainbridge island-wide city - Darlene Kordonowy, Vicki Johnson and Charles Schmid - reminisce about that transformative event on its 25th anniversary. Darlene describes the 1988 to 1991 home rule movement and recalls her role as its co-chair. She discusses the resilience of the 21-member home rule group as they persevered despite initial rejections by certain officials. Darlene also discusses her transition, after the victory on the November 1990 island-wide ballot, to the 7-member group that drafted the new city's first comprehensive plan. Vicki Johnson shares personal anecdotes from her vantage point as the chair of publicity and citizen education for the local home rule group. She reminisces about the talents of the small group, and how they continued to bounce back when a tactic or strategy seemed thwarted. Charles Schmid talks about his views of the process from the vantage point of being the pragmatic professional engineer on the home rule team, and the environmental leader of the Association of Bainbridge Communities (ABC). Charles tells an anecdote about driving to the Port Orchard county offices to oversee the recount of the close vote, and its triumphant outcome, with a return to the island accompanied by a musical overture. The podcast follows this chronology of the home rule movement: Nov 1988: Home Rule Committee formed April 1989: Winslow City Council initially rejects annexation idea Jan 1990: Boundary Review Board rejects island-city proposal Jan 1990: crucial "Fight or Quit" meeting; the Committee decides to fight on March 1990: Incoming mayor of Winslow (population: 2,800) invites resolution to annex the rest of the island (population: 12,200) March 1990: new State legislation gives Bainbridge citizens a vote Sept 1990: Winslow residents vote to approve annexing the rest of the island Nov 1990: A 51.1% majority of voters outside Winslow say "yes" to all-island city March 1, 1991: First day of new all-island City You are invited to the 7pm Tuesday March 1st City Hall celebration and public commemoration of the 25th anniversary of all-island home rule, highlighting our community's accomplishments over the past 25 years.
