Send us a textDr. Sean Gibbons, Ph.D. is Associate Professor at the Institute for Systems Biology ( ISB - https://isbscience.org/people/sean-gibbons-phd/?tab=biography ) where his lab investigates how the structure and composition of evolving ecological networks of microorganisms change across environmental gradients, with a specific focus on how ecological communities in the gut change and adapt to individual people over their lifespans (i.e. host genotype, host development and host behavior) and how these changes impact human health ( https://gibbons.isbscience.org/ ). His lab develops computational and experimental tools for investigating host-associated microbial communities to explore the interactions between ecology, evolution and ecosystem function, applying these insights to develop personalized interventions for improving human health and well-being.Dr. Gibbons received his PhD in biophysical sciences from the University of Chicago in 2015, dual-advised by Jack Gilbert and Maureen Coleman. His graduate work focused on using microbial communities as empirical models for testing ecological theory. Dr. Gibbons completed his postdoctoral training in Eric Alm's laboratory in the Department of Biological Engineering at MIT from 2015-2018. His postdoctoral work focused on developing techniques to quantify individual-specific eco-evolutionary dynamics within the human gut microbiome.Dr. Gibbons was awarded a Fulbright Graduate Fellowship to study microbiology and synthetic biology at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he earned a master's degree in 2010. His PhD work was supported by an EPA STAR Graduate Fellowship. Upon joining the ISB faculty in 2018, his startup package was supported, in part, by a Washington Research Foundation Distinguished Investigator Award.Important Episode Link - Metagenomic estimation of dietary intake from human stool - Nature Metabolism - https://www.nature.com/articles/s42255-025-01220-1#SeanGibbons #InstituteForSystemsBiology #ISB #Microbiome #Microbes #Ecology #Medicine #Dysbioses #EcologicalTherapeutics #Virome #PrecisionNutrition #GutDigitalTwin #FecalMicrobiotaTransplantation #Longevity #Aging #Healthspan  #ProgressPotentialAndPossibilities #IraPastor #Podcast #Podcaster #ViralPodcast #STEM #Innovation #Technology #Science #ResearchSupport the show

Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. The Concordians and the Roman Church both agreed with the clear words of Holy Scripture. Christ will come for judgement at a time we cannot predict (Matthew 24:43-44). The godly will have eternal life and eternal joys (2 Timothy 4:8) and the ungodly endless punishment (Matthew 25:46). Lord have mercy! “O Jesus Christ, do not delay, But hasten our salvation; We often tremble on our way in fear and tribulation. O hear and grant our fervent plea: Come, mighty judge, and set us free. From death and every evil.” LSB 508, st. 7 Rev. Jack Gilbert, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Racine, WI, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study Christ's Return. Did you know that joy is your birthright as a human?Finding joy is one of Martha's favorite topics, and that's what she's talking about on this episode of The Gathering Room! Martha says that joy, like beauty, is its own excuse for being, and she shares ways we can look for and experience joy, even in the midst of difficulty. She quotes a Jack Gilbert poem that says, "We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world.” Meaning, we must find joy wherever we are. Martha clarifies that joy is not the same thing as happiness. Happiness is what you feel when something you do succeeds, or you recover from an illness, or someone you love comes back from far away. Happiness is wonderful, of course, but joy goes much deeper. Joy is something that says, "I am here on an experience-gathering mission, and my soul loves adventure and is not afraid to suffer." Martha says that joy is what gets you through this world because it reminds you that you are not of this world. It is something more lasting, more powerful, and more loving than your physical experience could ever be.To hear how Martha found joy during some difficult times in her own life, learn easy ways to find joy if it's been eluding you for a while, and get inspired to jump for joy wherever you see it, tune in for the full episode. You can also join Martha in meditation for a little “energy bath” of joy. Don't miss it! The biology nerd in me is so happy about this one! Joining me this time is Professor Jack Gilbert from the University of California San Diego: in 2023 he gave the Annual Lecture at the British Menopause Society conference, which is how his work came to my attention (via our Managing the Menopause Clinical Lead - also my sister-in-law - Dr Beth Thomas).    In the course of this wide-ranging conversation that focuses on our gut microbiome we cover: why understanding the interaction of our sex hormones with the microbiome is a burgeoning area of science and how everything in the body is connected in series of complex feedback cycles;  The key role of decreasing oestrogen in inflammation: leading to depression, anxiety, aches and pains, and gastrointestinal issues; How our microbiome changes pre- to post-menopause (post-menopause the female microbiome tends to look much more like it would in men); The important of butyrate and why a healthy gut barrier is so important; Why we should consider ‘priming' the body to consume fibre with fermented foods; The long-term chronic health implications of not getting enough dietary fibre, which are often not felt immediately but accumulate over decades; How fecal transplants are being used to repopulate the gut microbiome - early studies have shown promise in menopause symptom treatment but more research is needed; That HRT appears to ‘rescue' gut dysbiosis (reduce inflammatory bacteria, more balanced microbiome); The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis (aka how your body senses stress): - cortisol keeps you alert and anxious, but the system can be hijacked by inflammatory bacteria, neuroinflammation triggers the HPA axis causing elevated anxiety, i.e. there is no reason to be anxious but the body is on high alert; Why acetominophen (paracetamol) can cause liver cirrhosis with excessive consumption in certain people; How antibiotics wipe out other useful bugs that keep resistant strains under check, and how ‘problem' strains thrive on high sugar and high saturated fat (and why your diet in the run up to an operation could make a huge difference); Exposure to microbes in nature and the potential impacts of bacteria in soil that have an antidepressant effect; ‘Gut feelings': how the state of our gut can impact our decision-making abilities, and that changes in microbiome can impact how hungry we are, our propensity to snack, and even our choice choice of snacks…eg sugar cravings; How 80% of serotonin is made in gut, but that it is actually a  serotonin precursor that can pass out of the gut into the body to then be made into serotonin by other cells - although the relationships between levels of serotonin in the gut and the brain is not currently understood.    Listen to the end to find out about the research study that Professor Gilbert would  most like to run if he had no constraints!    You can find our more about Professor Jack Gilbert's work at: https://gilbertlab.ucsd.edu/  You can also find us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ and you can listen to past episodes at https://middlingalong.com     Join our newsletter, The Messy Middle, for fortnightly goodness into your Inbox: https://dashboard.mailerlite.com/forms/323784/90772270045202190/share    We're delighted to be listed as one of the Top 25 podcasts for midlife and menopause here: https://www.lattelounge.co.uk/podcasts-about-the-menopause/   It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us to share the love and help others find the podcast too!  You can also find me at https://www.instagram.com/managingthemenopause  or at www.managingthemenopause.com where we offer 1-1 coaching and workplace training.  Get our free 'Guide to your GP appointment' at https://www.managingthemenopause.com/free-resources

In this episode I have an interview with a leading scientist specializing in gut microbiota. These are the microbes that live in your intestine and help you digest your food. Our DNA does not have all the enzymes we need to break down food into the vitamins and minerals we need. We live in a symbiotic relationship with this microbial ecosystem.  We provide the microbes a home and they provide us with nutrients. When the ecosystem gets out of whack we can get sick. Sometimes we take anti-biotics to cure an infection and that throws a huge wrench into this ecosystem. I've seen a lot of folks saying probiotics help to build a robust microbiome, and I've also heard a lot of folks saying that anything you eat gets killed in the stomach. I'd like to hear what the experts have to say. Professor Jack Gilbert joined UCSD in 2019 where he is a Professor in Pediatrics and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Associate Vice Chancellor for Marine Science, and Director of both the Microbiome and Metagenomics Center and the Microbiome Core Facility. He uses molecular analysis to test fundamental hypotheses in microbial ecology. He cofounded the Earth Microbiome Project and American Gut Project, has authored over 400 peer reviewed publications and book chapters on microbial ecology, co-authored the book “Dirt is Good,” and is the founding Editor in Chief of ASM mSystems journal. He founded BiomeSense Inc to produce automated microbiome sensors. We are continuing the conversation today with Steve and Roger Housden. It was Roger who opened the portal for Steve to get and understand poetry. Roger is a prolific writer, poet, speaker and teacher and speaks with a grace and appreciation of self-discovery and exploration . Thank you for joining us today! Our Special Guest - Roger Housden Roger Housden is an author and has been featured many times in The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. His first book was published in the U.K. in 1990, and as of 2018, he has published twenty six books, including four travel books, a novella, Chasing Love and Revelation, and the best-selling Ten Poems series, which began in 2001 with Ten Poems to Change Your Life and ended with the publication in 2018 of Ten Poems  for Difficult Times. A native of England, he lives in Marin County, California, and teaches around the world. Roger's Website Roger's Books   Mentioned in Podcast Come Before Winter Retreat A Brief for the Defense by Jack Gilbert Sorrow everywhere. Slaughter everywhere. If babies are not starving someplace, they are starving somewhere else. With flies in their nostrils. But we enjoy our lives because that's what God wants. Otherwise the mornings before summer dawn would not be made so fine. The Bengal tiger would not be fashioned so miraculously well. The poor women at the fountain are laughing together between the suffering they have known and the awfulness in their future, smiling and laughing while somebody in the village is very sick. There is laughter every day in the terrible streets of Calcutta, and the women laugh in the cages of Bombay. If we deny our happiness, resist our satisfaction, we lessen the importance of their deprivation. We must risk delight. We can do without pleasure, but not delight. Not enjoyment. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world. To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil. If the locomotive of the Lord runs us down, we should give thanks that the end had magnitude. We must admit there will be music despite everything. We stand at the prow again of a small ship anchored late at night in the tiny port looking over to the sleeping island: the waterfront is three shuttered cafés and one naked light burning. To hear the faint sound of oars in the silence as a rowboat comes slowly out and then goes back is truly worth all the years of sorrow that are to come. ————- From Collected Poems by Jack Gilbert. Copyright © 2012.   Unholy Sonnet 11 by Mark Jarman Half asleep in prayer I said the right thing And felt a sudden pleasure come into The room or my own body. In the dark, Charged with a change of atmosphere, at first I couldn't tell my body from the room. And I was wide awake, full of this feeling, Alert as though I'd heard a doorknob twist, A drawer pulled, and instead of terror knew The intrusion of an overwhelming joy. I had said thanks and this was the response. But how I said it or what I said it for I still cannot recall and I have tried All sorts of ways all hours of the night. Once was enough to be dissatisfied. —————— From Questions for Ecclesiastes by Mark Jarman. Far from being a type of toxic positivity, the practice of Joy can provide one with a type of inner resilience and strength needed to navigate the storms inherent in the human experience. "To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the devil" Jack Gilbert. Welcome to our spring online meditation retreat offering: Joy. The Ground Of Resilience. Celebrating the joys of life: enjoying the smile of a loved one, the purring of a kitten, the laughter of a friend, is a practice of self compassion. It is the ground of resilience, and a much needed resource in these crazy times. Now, more than ever, we need the resource of Joy. Mudita, often translated as sympathetic joy, or altruistic joy, is one of the four Divine Abodes from the Buddhist traditions. Mudita has the capacity to allow us to see through the illusion of separateness and allow us to come together through our innate capacity for celebration and joy. All sessions of these retreats are live. The meetings are not pre-recorded. During these eight weeks our facilitator Chris Luard will expertly guide us through an exploration in cultivating a Joy generating internally, and which is not dependent upon external factors or circumstances. Using meditation techniques found in the Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist traditions as well as practices offered by modern neuroscience and psychology, this retreat will bring its participants to experience a boundless joy to offer to ourselves, loved ones, strangers, challenging people, and to the entire world. There are two sections being offered to cater to different time zones. Each section of our retreat will meet twice a week. Section 1 Monday and Thursday 1-3pm EST. Section 2 Mondays and Thursdays 7pm-9pm. EST. Sessions will include guided meditations, Q n A, optional one to one private sessions with Chris, and interactive discussions with the retreat participants The registration cost for the entire eight week program is $119.00 USD. If you would like to participate, but find these times or cost limiting, please feel free to message Chris here. The online sessions will be recorded and available to participants. This is made available to allow participants to miss sessions, if necessary, while keeping up with the pace of the retreat. Signing up for this special offering in advance is recommended.
