Cultural gaps can be quite tragic, to say nothing of socially debilitating. Mark discovers to his horror that Walker is unfamiliar both with a key game and a crucial character in film history. Thank goodness that this faux pas does not sully Masterpiece Theatre, as that would bring shame to both the Warrior of the Wasteland and Vin Diesel. Emma and Gil welcome returning guest Eric Zimmerman, who last appeared on the show on Episode 79 to discuss the magic circle in gaming. This time, Eric discusses his idea of the 21st century being a "ludic century," and what makes games especially important today. We also discuss how games' powers can be used for evil, if tabletop games can become more environmentally sustainable, and see if there can be an equivalent to farmers' markets or slow food in tabletop game. SHOW NOTES 1m26s: Eric's previous tabletop games: Quantum, The Metagame (with Colleen Macklin and John Sharp). He also mentions Gamelab, Diner Dash, Sissyfight, Dear Reader, NYU Game Center (where Gil and Geoff are also adjuncts), and Rules of Play. Eric also mentions his large-scale art installation games that he's done with his partner Nathalie Pozzi. Here are a few of them: Interference, Starry Heavens, and Waiting Rooms. 5m34s: Here is Eric's original Ludic Century essay/manifesto, published in 2013. 16m27s: More info about Bernie De Koven and his influential book The Well-Played Game. 18m13s: More info about the slimy practice of gerrymandering. Eric also mentions the board game El Grande. 21m45s: More info about systemic racism. 24m17s: More info about Ultimate, also known as Ultimate Frisbee. 25m53s: One thing to note here is that impartial referees in sports are a relatively recent development. In the mid-19th century, both baseball and association football (soccer) originally had each team bring their own umpire, who would attempt to agree on calls. Back then, umpires did not make calls proactively; players had to appeal to the umpire in order to get a decision.  This changed as teams got more competitive and team-based umpires failed to be impartial. Both sports brought in a neutral referee who could resolve disputes between the umpires; baseball in 1857, soccer in 1881. Eventually, the team-based umpires were dropped entirely, with soccer keeping the single referee (though they eventually added two linesmen to help make calls) and baseball renaming the referee back to "umpire" and adding three additional umpires to handle calls at each base. (Sources: Strike Four: The Evolution of Baseball, Richard Hershberger, and The Ball is Round: A Global History of Soccer, David Goldblatt.) 30m52s: Jane McGonigal's book Reality is Broken. 36m34s: The influential behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner. 48m32s: Cheapass Games has made many of their older "envelope" games available as print-and-play downloads. 49m00s: The gone-and-gladly-forgotten CD longbox. 50m15s: The Zoomable game RATS: High Tea at Sea by Eric and Josh DeBonis.  55m42s: More information about the environmental concerns around cryptocurrency. 1h03m10s: Slow Food is an organization related to the slow movement that pushes back against the fast pace of modern life. 1h09m35s: The game Gil mentions is Avatar Stalker, from the folks at Project Avatar. He also mentions The Nest, which was first mentioned on the show by Hayley Cooper of Strange Bird Immersive on Ludology 214 - Escape from Reality. 1h12m27s: Eric mentions the artists Alex Katz and Kara Walker. 1h15m55s: Eric’s website, the NYU Game Center, and Eric's partner Nathalie Pozzi.

Wait, is that title right? Whatever, we'll fix it in post. In this episode we ate some candy Bruce took from a stranger, drank each other under the table, and had an idea or four.   WHAT THE FOOD Bruce got some Canadian toffee that was very tasty but not very radio-friendly. We were also disappointed by a huge multilingual Kit Kat.   THE RED DRAGON INN (1 & 2) We review this game that appears on Boardgamegeek's Top 100 Party Game list to judge for ourselves whether we think it belongs there. Also, chain mail underwear. THE PARTY GAMECLASH! In this GameClash we came in here for that special offer: a guaranteed personality. We played the pitch game "The Big Idea," by James Ernest (of Cheapass Games fame). A simian power tool? Disease? Heaven itself? Or maybe you'd just like a fresh coat of paint. We certainly hope Mike survived this episode. EXTRA LIFE About Extra Life (coming up November 2nd 2019): We will be doing our annual 24 hour gaming marathon for the Children's Miracle Network charity at 3 Gear Games in the Historic Savage Mill in Savage Mill, Maryland (www.3geargames.com). Intro Banter: The guys catch up with very exciting news from the world of gaming, and the...world in general.   Intro Banter Part Deux: Tarifs! And you the boardgamer! So….Tariffs for US gamers with China may add as much as 25% (stated) to board games that are coming out of that country to here. Other things as well, but this is a board game podcast. What does this mean? It means LOOK before you leap, it means see if you can source the game locally (used, don’t pay gougers) it means you may have to wait it out or do without for a time. It means that if there are issues that are reaching into your pocketbook, we MUST put the games down sometimes and see what the rest of the world is doing and do our part to address deficiencies that WE have felt, if we are so moved.   Purchase news: GTG purchased Cheap@$$ games recently, what can this mean?: link here. Greater Than Games announced today that it has acquired Cheapass Games. Greater Than Games is best known for the award winning Spirit Island and Sentinels of the Multiverse, while Cheapass Games is known for their low cost, black and white game (and more recently an upgraded version of Kill Dr. Lucky). From their PR Spokesperson: “The acquisition of Cheapass Games is the culmination of several years of friendship between the two companies. Cheapass Games has created richly-themed black and white games since its inception in 1996, with the introduction of full-color games, such as Tak, Kill Doctor Lucky and Unexploded Cows, in later years. “I’m thrilled to have Greater Than Games take over publishing current and future Cheapass Games titles, and I look forward to working with them on a variety of projects,” said James Ernest, exiled leader of Cheapass Games. As we undergo this transition, Greater Than Games looks forward to supporting the Cheapass Games product lines, demo staff, and fan base. “ Original source:  https://www.boardgamequest.com/ The Long Haul (Project Play) - the hosts pick an ambitious and far reaching goal and see it through and chronicle it for the show! James Ernest began his gaming career in 1993 as a technical writer for Wizards of the Coast. He has written the rules for Magic: The Gathering a grand total of four times. Unfortunately, none of these was the lucrative first time. Burdened with an abundance of unpublished games and alarmed by first-hand exposure to the tribulations of traditional game publishing, he launched Cheapass Games in 1996 with the flagship title Kill Doctor Lucky. The slow start of Cheapass Games in 1996 is marked by the fact that Kill Doctor Lucky won the Origins Award for Best Abstract Board game of the following year. For ten years, Cheapass Games released about twelve games per year, winning several awards and bringing light and joy to the hearts of dozens of humans. However, James Ernest was not able to pay his rent with light and joy. Thus, with a heavy heart and an empty bank account, James Ernest shuttered Cheapass Games, fired all of his staff, and retired into a dark cave called the computer games industry, in which he was forced to subsist on a massive paycheck and decent benefits. After more than five years in his cave, James Ernest has re-emerged Willy Wonka-style, producing new versions of his old games as well as some entirely new creations. http://cheapass.com/ https://www.facebook.com/ActualCheapassGames https://www.instagram.com/cheapassgames/ https://twitter.com/CheapassGames https://twitter.com/cheapassjames Theme music created by Brett Miller http://www.brettmillermusic.net/

After a bit too long to wait to record this episode, Dr Reddy, Kara and myself have managed to get together to record our 100th episode and we have a bit of everything for you. Starting with our impressions of the UK Games Expo, we discuss what was about this new edition of the convention that we liked and what we didn’t, and what we think will happen in the future. We talk for a few minutes about Unexploded Cows, a game by Cheapass Games. In that game, one sends cows to explode mines and make money, which in turns will help you get cities and thus win the game. It’s very weird! And also we talk about Sentinels of the Multiverse, but not for review purposes, but to discuss if hype sometimes makes people have expectations that can’t be met, simply because games can very rarely live to the highest expectations we put in our minds. Is Sentinels one of those games? Did Unexploded Cows let my friend down (and it did!) because it wasn’t as good as he wanted it to be? And lastly, what do you make of Cthulhu Wars? This new Kickstarter project is promising an awful lot and the photos certainly look amazing, but some people think there isn’t enough substance behind the campaign to warrant the price tag one has to pay to get their hands on this game. And lastly we discuss what we’d like to do between now and the 200th episode of the podcast (which won’t take two and half years to come!), but we’re also interested in finding out what you, the listener, would like from us, so please do let us know!

It's finally here! Our long awaited Podcast of Hate! In this show, Mark and Jeff field listener comments about the things they hate, dislike, or otherwise do not savor in the gaming world. Before we dive into the cauldron of embitterment, our Dusty Old Box segment features an unusual --a VERY unusual game that is "kinda-sorta" like some other games but is really unique in many ways. In actuality, today's Dusty Old Box is not a box, but...a Dusty Old Thing. Once Mark and Jeff dive into the hate, they cover discussion topics ranging from poor sportsmanship to game company publishing practices, to game group dynamics. Before signing off, Jeff does a quick segment to describe the game Cube Fame, published by Cheapass Games. This is a very high-level description of the game, and gives us something to "Point-Five" next time, and so we'll dig into Cube Farm a bit more deeply the next time we plug-in our headset mics!
