PATRICK SIMMONS 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO Episode 16 Interviewed Tuesday, November 15, 2011 I had the opportunity to interview Doobie Brothers legendary guitarist and songwriter Patrick Simmons a few days before the 2011 Orlando Calling festival. Pat Simmons was introduced to future Doobie Brothers bandmates Tom Johnston and John Hartman by Moby Grape's Skip Spence in 1969 forming the foundation to what would eventually be one of the most esteemed classic rock bands in history. Pat is usually identified as the Doobie Brother with the longest hair. His heartfelt vocal styles are significant to the band's success. He's an important musician with eclectic musical styles and tastes. Some of his many compositions with the band include the classic “Black Water” (which became their first number one hit) “South City Midnight Lady,” “Dependin' On You,” “Dangerous,” “Echoes Of Love” and “Clear as the Driven Snow.” His on-stage presence is both surreal and overwhelming during his solo of “Jesus Is Just Alright.” Here's my interview with singer, songwriter, guitar virtuoso, and founding member of The Doobie Brothers … Patrick Simmons Doobie Brothers official website http://www.doobiebros.com/ Patrick Simmons musical credits on allmusic.com http://www.allmusic.com/artist/patrick-simmons-p20546/credits Support us on PayPal!
Crystal McKenzie sat down with Doobie Brothers founding member Pat Simmons to talk about, among other things, his best known song; as well as the song he wrote to benefit the recovery effort from last year's fires in Hawaii. The Doobie Brothers play Ruoff Music Center with special guest Steve Winwood on August 17th.
TOM JOHNSTON THE DOOBIE BROTHERS ‘THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO EPISODE 15 INTERVIEWED FEBRUARY 17TH 2013 The Doobie Brothers are one of those bands that we've depended on, year after year, and expect to see performing invariably at outdoor music festivals, pavilions, arenas, casinos and bike week events across the nation. The group has been exhilarating audiences for decades yet appear timeless onstage. One of the principal reasons for the longevity and success of the Doobie Brothers has a lot to do with an unmitigated affection shared between the band and its audience. It's been an amazing love affair that has persevered for over forty-two years. When the Doobie Brothers finally call it quits … rock ‘n' roll will probably call it quits too. Tom Johnston is the voice, lyricist and guitarist on numerous classic hit recordings by the Doobie Brothers. Inspired by listening to R&B music on the radio, California native Johnston started his first band at 14, eventually broadening his musical horizons by singing with soul and blues groups. After moving to San Jose to finish college, Tom met Skip Spence, original drummer for the Jefferson Airplane. Spence introduced Johnston to drummer John Hartman. Spence was also a founding member of Moby Grape which had a major influence on the Doobie Brothers. Tom Johnston, John Hartman and bassist Greg Murphy formed the power trio “Pud.” When “Pud” unraveled, the evolution of the Doobie Brothers began to take shape. While living in a home dubbed as their “musical headquarters,” guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren joined the group. The band quickly generated a huge following in California. In 1971, the Doobie Brothers launched their self- titled debut album, The Doobie Brothers on the Warner Brothers label with legendary producers Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker. The first track on the album, “Nobody” penned by Tom Johnston, would later resurface in 2010 on their latest release, World Gone Crazy. Their second studio album Toulouse Street (named for a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans) introduced new bassist Tiran Porter and second drummer Michael Hossack (Navy Veteran). The album spawned the Tom Johnston penned classic hits, “Listen to the Music” (#11 Top 100 Billboard Hit -1972), “Rockin' Down the Highway” and “Jesus Is Just Alright,” (#35 Billboard Top 100 Hit -1973) written by Arthur Reynolds (1965) and performed by The Byrds (1969). In 1973, the Doobie Brothers released, The Captain and Me spotlighting some of the bands most memorable classic rock tunes penned by Tom Johnston … “Long Train Runnin'”(#8 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and perhaps the bands anthem song, “China Grove” (#15 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The Captain and Me also featured a guest performance by future Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. The Doobie Brothers fourth studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits released in 1974 spawned the Tom Johnston penned songs, “Another Park, Another Sunday” (#32 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and “Eyes of Silver” (#52 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The album also featured Pat Simmons penned tribute to “The Big Easy,” “Black Water” (#1 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975). Stampede released in 1975 was the final album before Michael McDonald took over lead vocalist duties from an ailing Tom Johnston. The album featured the cover version, “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” (#11 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975) written by the Motown team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Subsequent albums …Takin' It to the Streets (1976), Livin' on the Fault Line (1977), Minute by Minute (1978) and One Step Closer (1980) featured a successful second incarnation of the band, which primarily consisted of Michael McDonald(vocals, keyboards) Patrick Simmons (guitars/vocals) Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (guitars, steel guitars), Tiran Porter(bass, vocals), John Hartman (drums) and Keith Knudsen (drums). *Tom Johnston played and sang “Turn It Loose” and “Wheels of Fortune” on the album Takin' It to the Streets. John McFee was added to the Doobie Brothers lineup in 1979 replacing Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and was featured on One Step Closer. After a successful run, the band's signature sound and direction became disillusioned. While working on his solo project, Tom Johnston rejoined the band for a Farewell Tour, and then the Doobie Brothers would call it quits as a band for the next five years. The reformation of the Doobie Brothers was contrived when the band's alumni were asked by drummer Keith Knudsen to perform at a concert to benefit veterans' causes. The band discovered that tickets were in great demand and soon embarked on a twelve-city tour. In 1989, Cycles, the tenth studio recording by the Doobie Brothers, now on Capitol Records, witnessed the return of Tom Johnston and drummer Michael Hossack to the studio as a band. Tom Johnston's distinctive vocals returned, and the band re-established their musical roots. Subsequent releases … Brotherhood (1991), Sibling Rivalry (2000) and World Gone Crazy (2010). World Gone Crazy was the Doobie Brothers highest charting album since 1989 receiving rave reviews and featuring the longtime core lineup of Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons. The Doobie Brothers band functions like a well-oiled machine, touring consistently year after year and enchanting music enthusiasts worldwide. The current lineup of Tom Johnston (vocals/guitar), Pat Simmons (vocals/guitars), John McFee (guitar/strings/vocals), John Cowan (bass), Guy Allison (keyboards/vocals), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums) and Tony Pia (drums)… represent a musical legacy that defines the quintessence of rock ‘n' roll and a band that we've always depended on throughout the years. The Doobie Brothers have sold more than 40-million albums worldwide. …So why aren't they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Tom Johnston and the Doobie Brothers will be performing live as part of the Bands, Brew & BBQ concert series at Busch Gardens in Tampa on Sunday, February 24th. This week Capt. Content reminds us that something unique happened in the 90s with “Classic Rock” radio where they completely omitted any new contributions musically from the bands. In the 90's, the “Legacy Act” tag hadn't hit yet and bands were still trying to be true to themselves, but still be relevant. We're playing the Lost and Forgotten songs released during the Alternative Rock era from bands that we all know and love. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Many of the classic 60s-70s bands were still writing and delivering new musical content into the 90s. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from! Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, the leaders of the Doobie Brothers, offer up a tag-team oral history with writer Chris Epting on the legendary rock band in "Long Train Runnin'." Their five decade journey, the longevity, success, drama and even the biker bars are all here. Chris joins us to recount their history, including the events that shelved Johnston and brought in Michael McDonald for The Doobies second wildly successful lineup. Chris has also worked with a number of musicians on their memoirs, including John Oates, Leif Garret, and members of Tesla and Def Leppard, as well as an upcoming book on and with Dave Mason. If that's not enough. Epting has also written several great reads on pop culture, and pop music culture. They are the road map to many a great road trip, particularly if you're curious where many a rocker were born, lived, slept and died, and just where Madonna's bra currently resides.

Perhaps the most well-known Doobie Brother joined us this morning to talk about his life in the band. This, of course, is coming on the heels of their newly-released book "Long Train Runnin': Our Story Of The Doobie Brothers, which was co-written by our good buddy Chris Epting. Tom Johnston talked forming the band, meeting Pat Simmons, bringing Michael McDonald into the fold, and even having Stevie Nicks as a neighbor in their early years. He also touched on many of their hit songs and how they came to be, including one that forced him to wake their producer up at 3 in the morning!
Our good musicologist buddy Chris Epting was back this morning, with another story about classic rock that we'd never heard before! It's from his new book he co-authored with Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons (of the Doobies), called "Long Train Runnin': Our Story of The Doobie Brothers." Today's tale revolved around the house the Doobies lived in at the corner of a neighborhood, and you won't believe the other future classic rock stars who lived at the opposite end of the block! Here's what to expect in the book: For the first time, the incredible true story of the legendary band, The Doobie Brothers, written by founding members Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston.Only a very few rock bands have had the longevity, success, and drama of The Doobie Brothers. Born out of late 1960s NorCal, and led by Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, they stood alongside their contemporaries The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and many others as an iconic American rock band. The train was rolling along, hits were flowing like wine, and arenas were packed with fans who wanted to see them live...then Tom Johnston, the band's front man and lead guitarist, became ill and had to leave. The Doobies' train came to a screeching halt. All of a sudden the band started contemplating the end of the road only seven years into their career, just as things were taking off. But Pat Simmons made sure they were far from the end and began the process of keeping the band together through most of the next decade.A soul-steeped backup singer for Steely Dan named Michael McDonald took a shot at singing some of the Doobies' songs on tour, and all of a sudden a new chapter in the Doobie Brothers' story began. The band expanded their sound and had even more hits with their new front addition. Tom recovered from his health issues, but the band had moved on. When it came time for a reunion concert in the '80s, Tom got the call and was back in the mix. Led once again by Pat and Tom, The Doobie Brothers have been touring ever since and maintain a massive fan base the world over.Never before have Pat and Tom shared their story, in their own words. In Long Train Runnin' they'll change that.

The Doobie Brothers is a band with almost twenty official members throughout its five decades of existence. But Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons have been playing guitar and performing vocals for the band since Day One. Formed by a group of former hippies in 1970, The Doobie Brothers became one of the all-time greatest bands of the decade and certainly one of the decades most quintessential groups. Starting from the genesis of guitarists Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, the band carved out a space in the music industry playing souther inflected hard rock while mixing in some classic folk stylings. As their tours and size of the band grew, members began flowing in and out of the band (with over a dozen members playing through the ranks over the years) including a few alum from Steely Dan, the band began to expand into R&B and Motown influences. Strengthened by the mid decade addition of singer Michael McDonald, the Doobie Brothers crafted some of the decades biggest and most enduring hit songs and albums. Throughout this podcast we trace the Doobies music lineage and the massive influence they ended up having on the music industry as a whole, from their surprise campfire hits to being sampled by Drake and the Avalanches!
HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence shares his favorite interview and performance highlights from over 30 episodes in 2021, as part of a two-day end of year special. Today includes Peter Frampton's first of two appearances, Doobie Brothers' Pat Simmons, and Herb Alpert from his first of two appearances.
Pat Simmons was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney cancer. He went to the primary care doctor after he felt an abnormality in his lower abdomen. A cyst was detected after several scans and MRIs, and doctors did laparoscopic surgery to remove the encapsulated mass. He was a long-time singer and songwriter. Currently, he runs the organization bikes4christ, which lends bicycles to people who need them to get around or go to doctor's appointments. His parents were his primary support system. He believes that his faith in God has pulled him out from the worst to happen. His message to other survivors is to stay positive, surround yourself with a sound support system and do prayers.

Bikes For Christ was started in 2016 with a commitment to helping those in need while also sharing the love of God. Our organization has quickly grown to encompass providing transportation across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk and Pasco Counties with a mission to one day be nationwide. By showing God's love through providing bicycles for those in need, we hope to lead them to a life in His eternal kingdom. For several years Patrick (Pat) Simmons was trying to figure out how he could combine his passion for cycling with a cause that could really make a difference in people's lives. At the time he couldn't seem to come up with something that really had purpose, but all that changed after a trip with his church, First Baptist Dover, to Nicaragua in June 2015. He got to see poverty up close and personal and what it was like to live with very little. After he returned, he decided to get involved with his church in helping feed the homeless once a month at Amazing Love Ministries in Ybor City. Pat enjoyed it so much that he started going every week to help feed. He then got involved with a few other organizations that helped feed the homeless and needy and it was at this point he knew that he could do more. There was a real need for transportation for those who were really trying to better themselves and Pat knew he could help. Bikes for Christ was born in March 2016. With just some simple postings on Facebook and Craigslist seeking used bicycles, donations started pouring in. Currently Bikes For Christ receives donations from across four counties and redistributes them through other charitable organizations who work directly with clients and are able to “vet them out” to determine who really has a need. The organization has also expanded to help veterans and seniors with their commutes. Children are also a priority. As Pat states “every kid deserves a bike.” The most important part in all of this is that those who receive bikes know that someone loves and cares for them. “Through giving we show love, and it's the same love and compassion that Jesus showed us” Pat says. With every bicycle, a Bible goes along with it. “It's the handbook that gets us through this life and into heaven to spend with God for all eternity.”
Pat Simmons Jr. is trained in permaculture and the growing of food, but as we chat we discuss larger issues that affect permaculture... ethics, organization, relationships... without a holistic approach to permaculture success is limited. It's a great conversation that really digs into some deep issues that go largely unaddressed...

Pat Simmons Jr. was born on the Northern California coast but was raised from age 6 on the north-shore of Maui, Hawai'i; a life full of organic farming, surfing, skateboarding, exploring the country, and playing music. He also grew up on tour with his father's band The Doobie Brothers. As well as a surfer, farmer, father & Cancer survivor, Pat is an avid musician, offering a diverse blend of American folk-rock, country, blues, and reggae, Pat's music is flavored with a traditional Hawaiian influence. Pat's music expresses simple messages of conscious, social & environmental revolution. When not playing music Pat is exploring the lesser travelled nooks on his home island of Maui's, where he, his friends and family are actively re-connecting to the country and reviving the island's profoundly productive traditional agriculture systems known as Ahupua`a. Born out of Northern California's chaotic, late-1960s musical stew, The Doobie Brothers' rugged, real and authentic approach to rock and roll made them biker bar stalwarts. But their self-titled debut album in '71 went beyond just leather and motorcycles, revealing even more musical layers; sweet three-part harmonies and rootsy, introspective, acoustic flavors. The Doobie Brothers' legacy has been built upon not just hit records, but also an unrivaled commitment to musical integrity and a steadfast allegiance to their enthusiastic fan base. The bands ability to evolve in a constantly changing industry and connections to generations of listening audiences is a testament to their craft. It all began in 1969, when a drummer named John Hartman arrived in Northern California. He was there to meet Skip Spence from the band Moby Grape and become part of a supposed band reunion that never quite got off the ground. But it wasn't all for naught. Spence (who had also played in the Jefferson Airplane) introduced Hartman to his friend Tom Johnston, a local singer/songwriter/guitarist -and they connected. Hartman and Johnston began playing local Bay Area bars. They soon met singer/guitarist Pat Simmons, whose finger-style playing richly complimented Johnston's R&B strumming-style, and the foundation for The Doobie Brothers was set. While their debut album in 1971 did not chart, just a year a later, their second record, Toulouse Street, became a breakout sensation. Producer Ted Templeman helped the band craft a sound that was organic, yet radio friendly, and brought in Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne to add unique musical textures.
Escuchar audio
Up first it's Chino from Deftones. Their new album is out and we talked a lot about it, including the writing process and the lack of special guest musicians. Plus, what are his thoughts on the passing of Eddie Van Halen, beer, vinyl, and lots more. Pat Simmons from the Doobie Brothers is up next. Lots of excitement on their camp with the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame induction coming up (sometime) and a new box set, Quadio, for purchase. Obviously, being a guitar player, I asked him about EVH as well. He had a well thought out answer to watching a guitar God storm the scene in the late 70's. John Cowan is one of bluegrass, country, and rock's finest tenor vocalist. Fortunately for New Grass Revival, The Doobie Brothers, and many others, he's a damn fine bass guitarist too! Cowan, along with other New Grass members, will be officially inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame on October 1 in a previously taped ceremony from the stage of the historic Ryman Auditorium. It's an honor he holds dear to his heart. Born in Ohio, Cowan first developed his musical talent in Louisville, Kentucky, when he began playing cover tunes in local rock bands. His first musical break came in the early 1970s when working at a car wash in Louisville and received a call from New Grass Revival member Sam Bush, inviting him to audition. He was offered a spot as the band's new bassist that very day. Cowan returned to Louisville long enough to gather his belonging and quit his job. He immediately moved in with another member so the group could begin practicing. They soon discovered just how great a vocal range their new bass player added to the group. "Callin' Baton Rouge," the highest-charting New Grass Revival tune, was later recorded by Garth Brooks, who also scored a top-five hit on the country charts years later. Cowan also added his tenor vocals to Brook's version. When New Grass Revival disbanded around 1990, Cowan joined forces with Pat Simmons of The Doobie Brother's, Bill Lloyd of Foster & Lloyd, and Rusty Young of Poco to form The Sky Kings. The Doobie Brother's decided to reunite in 1992 and needed a bass player. His bandmate and an original Doobie member, Pat Simmons, suggested Cowan would be a wonderful addition to the band. A few years later, Cowan left the Doobie's to explore a solo career. The John Cowan Band still tours, giving audiences a taste of Cowan's expansive bluegrass vocals. As great an instrumentalist and vocalist Cowan is, he still gets star-struck when he encountered close friends like Emmylou Harris or the late Leon Russell. "Both are two of the greatest artists I have ever been associated with." With his soft gray hair and engaging smile, Cowan enjoys touring and looks forward to playing for live audiences. Besides playing with his own band, The Doobie Brothers 50th Anniversary Tour will hopefully happen in 2021. John Cowan will certainly remain a force in popular music for many years. Please enjoy this episode with Hall of Famer John Cowan and leave us a review on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

In this episode of Talking Motorcycles we go LIVE with some of the top competitors of this years event which departs from Daytona Beach this Friday night and arrives in Tacoma, Washngton September 21st. This epic ride is done on motorcycles built prior to 1937. Riders will be required to navigate well, ride and truly have an understanding of their classic machines. Patrick Simmons, lead singer and guitar for the Doobie Brothers! Norm Nelson is one of the best. He once rode his 1958 Harley-Davidson Sportster from Jacksonville, Florida to Alaska. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of that ride he did it again riding from St. Augustine, Florida to Alaska at 70 years old. He has won the vintage race at Datyona International Speedway 6 times on a Norton Manx. When the Historic Motorcycle Society chose Norm to ride in the event last year he nearly won it. In 2014, Norm and Team 23 are set to do it again hoping for a win. Norm will join us on this episode to discuss the ride just two days before they depart! Buzz Kanter, Publisher/Editor in Chief of American Iron Magazine will be competing in the Motorcycle Cannoball for the third time. This will be my third ride across the US on a motorcycle much older than I am. Rode a 1915 Harley twin on the first Motorcycle Cannonball in 2010, a 1929 Harley JDH on the second one in 2012, and will be riding a 1936 VLH this time. Interesting mixture of excitement, anxiety and anticipation right now. Buzz Kanter and Norm Nelson typify the spirit of the Motorcycle Cannonball. Both are excellent motorcyclists who will tell their stories as to why they ride in this grueling yet rewarding event that covers 4000 miles of American roads from coast to coast. Prolific and amazing, Pat Simmons' upcoming release No Easy Catch is just one of the many things we'll be discussing tonight! Excerpt: Chapter 1 excerpt February 2014 St. Louis Cardinals baseball outfielder Rahn Maxwell had made some wrong turns in life—women and money, to name a few—but this wrong turn could prove deadly if the pair of blinding headlights racing toward him didn't slow down. He had just left a nightclub in downtown St. Louis, where he had met some friends. A construction sign had instructed him to detour off Interstate 64, and now his GPS attempted to recalculate. The darkness around him was thick as fog. “Turn around when possible,” his GPS kept advising, as if it sensed danger. That would be a good idea, but at the moment, he had a more pressing issue. Since there wasn't time for Rahn to get out of harm's way, with a car speeding behind him, he braced for impact. Seconds later, the anticipated crash never occurred. An old Camaro shrieked to a halt alongside his pearl gray Mercedes-Benz G550 SUV, blocking his exit. Rahn experienced a bad gut feeling. The front passenger window of the car descended, and a dark-skinned man wearing dark glasses snarled at him. Brandishing some type of machine gun, he ordered Rahn to lower his window. Great! And he had just declined the dealer's recommendation of armor-plated protection for his luxury vehicle. Now, Rahn wished he had followed his advice. How come hindsight couldn't be foresight?
