It's about this reframing what it is to be in our bodies and to embodied and to celebrate all the different phases. I mean, my size has never defined me.Lesley Logan 0:27  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 1:10  All right, Be It babe, this is magical. If you had told me when I saw this podcast, I would have in this conversation, I would have like, no, what are you talking about? So while we normally don't talk a lot about Pilates on this podcast, everything is kind of Pilates to me. I have two incredible, humongously wonderful, brilliant, the biggest hearts of the entire world teachers on today's podcast, and we are going to talk about friendships and life and having brave conversations and and how do you accept an invitation to make an impact about something that is bigger than you? And this is really wonderful conversation. And so Maria Earle and Brooke Siler are our guests today, and we were talking about The Pilates Body book. And I'm honored. I can't believe I'm pinching myself that just fucking happened. I can't believe it. I can't believe I just got off like, two-hour chat with these wonderful women. What is my life? So anyways, I can't wait for you to hear this, and I do think it is a honest conversation about bodies and women and the things we go through. And I hope you love it and that you send it to a friend who needs to hear it, and you know, you tell us all about your favorite parts of it. Here they are. Lesley Logan 2:23  All right, Be It babe, we have like a dynamic duo. I'm not gonna lie, I also totally screwed something up when hitting getting everything ready, because I was so nervous and so excited, because I'm obsessed with both these women, I get to fan girl over them to their faces, which is very fun for me. So Maria and I got to officially meet in in Seoul Korea, but I had been following Maria Earle for a long time, and just watching she's just like, so graceful and so amazing and just wonderful everything she does. And I'm just like, I'm not graceful at all, but I just absolutely adored her. And I love like, I've spent time with her in Seoul, Korea, and so I feel like we'll always have a night in Seoul together. And then Brooke Siler, okay, so I went to, and you might not know this about me, Brooke, but I actually went to Pilates class, kind of kicking and screaming. I thought of that class was like a bunch of BS workout. I told the girl, it's an infomercial workout. It can't do what it claims, but I needed a friend. So I went to the class. And I was obsessed. Became obsessed with this class. I was like, oh, it was the most amazing thing I've ever done in my entire life. And I worked at South Coast Plaza, and I went to the bookstore, and I went to the fitness section, and I bought the Pilates book that was there, it was your book, I took it home, and I did every exercise like in the book. I started going to Pilates every single day. And you had a second book, and I bought that one. I was on the treadmill, like walking, like I was lifted, like I was obsessed. And then some, I moved to L.A., and someone's, like, can you be my Pilates instructor and like, kind of, you know, the internet and social media wasn't really a thing then. And then, fast forward to, I believe it was January of 2020, you were in L.A., and I was like, I have to go to this workshop. She doesn't know I'm so obsessed with her. And I went to the workshop and you taught an exercise a certain way that I had been teaching it that way, and I had no one had taught it to me like that, but I had just figured out like, and I pull straps I want my inner thighs up because it helps me get my butt on, helps me all these things. And you said it, and I was like, oh my God, I'm so validated right now. So anyways, I just had to tell you that, because, like, I you, like, even though I knew it was great, I just, like, needed someone like you to say it. I was like, this is amazing. So. Brooke Siler 4:31  Your little backup. Lesley Logan 4:32  Yeah, a little backup. So anyways, you've been part of my, like, be it till I see it as a Pilates person my whole life, and you and, like, for at least 20 years, and you didn't know it. But now I get to have the two of you on the Be It Till You See It podcast. So we'll start with Brooke. Brooke, can you tell everyone who you are and what you rock at? Brooke Siler 4:48  Yes. Well, first of all, thank you so much for having us. Me, us both. I, yeah, really excited to even have a conversation. I love being in a room with smart women. There's nothing better, really. So my name is Brooke Siler, as Lesley has already told you, I am an author. I'm a teacher. I started teaching in 1994 and then in 2000 I wrote the Pilates body, and it's been that fantastic 15 minutes of fame that has just gone on and on and on for me. I just am super blessed, super grateful. And yeah, I think that's who I am.Lesley Logan 5:25  Oh, my God, yeah, yeah. Then there's, I mean, like, when you have to, like, distill yourself down into a nutshell life, but it is, absolutely, we'll have to get into the 15 minutes of fame that keeps on giving you know for decades. Maria Earle, what do you rock at babe? Maria Earle 5:40  Hi. Also, thank you for putting this together. It's fun to be here with you two. So my name is Maria Earle, and I am a Pilates educator, and have been teaching Pilates since 1997 walked into the first Pilates studio a few years before that, and just never stopped. Anyway, I I'm based in Barcelona, Spain, and prior to that, I lived in New York City and had a Pilates studio for about eight years on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and took a big leap of faith and moved abroad about 15 years ago, which it's funny when you put a number to it, but, yeah.Lesley Logan 6:29  I know, I know I feel really young until I realize how long I've been doing something. I'm like, oh, I mean, I'm still young, but also we aged in there.Maria Earle 6:38  So yeah, I have a Pilates studio here, and I run post graduate teacher training courses and online things. And, you know, trying to live my best life, basically.Lesley Logan 6:52  Yeah, do the best you can. Like, do the whole balance thing they all tell us to do. You're like, balance gotta work, the balance of work and life. And, you know, you have kids too, right, Maria? Maria Earle 7:01  I have one, though it feels like multiples, but there is only one. I'm like, yeah, yeah, there's one. Lesley Logan 7:10  Yeah, oh my gosh, okay, well, so I guess we can go, you know, we can go anywhere we want, but I actually would love to hear how the two of you got connected, because part of me goes like, did you know each other in New York? And the other part of me is like, so jealous when I hear that you've been doing Pilates since the 90s, like, I would wonder what my life would have been like had I learned it sooner. I'm always so jealous of people who did it in the 90s.Maria Earle 7:36  Yeah. You call that Golden Age.Brooke Siler 7:38  It really was. It really was a golden, I feel like it was, yeah, it was a Golden Age. Pilates. (inaudible) I feel like Maria and I maybe have orbited each other, because we seem to have been in a lot of the same places at the same times, but we didn't actually meet each other, until just 20, what did we determine it was? 2018?Maria Earle 8:01  2019Brooke Siler 8:02  2019 in Barcelona. I came over to teach a workshop at a studio there, and Maria was there, and she was Maria (inaudible) and it was her birthday, and I was like, oh, loud American, oh my gosh, in Spain, in this little studio. And, yeah, we, I, we just kind of got to chatting, but we didn't do much after that, did we? For a while.Maria Earle 8:28  We talked, I think we talked a few times, because we know are we allowed to say this about you living abroad already. Brooke Siler 8:36  I mean, I live abroad. Maria Earle 8:37  That's not a that's not a .Brooke Siler 8:39  No, it's not a secret. No, I live in the U.K.Maria Earle 8:42  So yeah, I think. Lesley Logan 8:44  What if Brooke is like, don't tell anyone I live in the U.K.Brooke Siler 8:50  I'm the witness protection program. But other than that.Maria Earle 8:53  Witness protection program, I was like, I don't know. You know, I'm not gonna. Anyway, so yeah, (inaudible) exactly. I think we connected. I mean, not only do we connect over, you know, Pilates or whatnot, but I think there was, like a real like, wait, you live in the U.K.? And you were like, wait, you live here now? We were both kind of like, well, what are you doing? What? And so there was, I think, you know, I remember a number of phone calls where we were talking about, you know, the, the challenge of, you know, uprooting your life. And in later years, you know, I mean, I didn't move here with children, but Brooke moved with children, and basically. Brooke Siler 9:41  Yeah, mine were nine and 11 when we moved. Maria Earle 9:43  You know, she needed to start running, like, from the get go. She needed to have all the things together, right? I, I moved here as a single person going, lalala. This is great. This is fun. And then, you know, sort of built my life deciding like, oh, I'm really going to stop. Here, and I'm going to make a life here for myself. And, you know, I've never looked back.Lesley Logan 10:07  Yeah, I think that's so I think this is so interesting, like, because we have a lot of people write in, like, how do you make friends when you're older? Like, I've moved and I think, like, that was obviously shared experiences. Like, you go somewhere, like everyone did you hear they went to a thing that they both are interested in, but then you you connect on another level. Like, I think that's the important part of like, having a friendship. Like, you have to, can't just be like, oh, we just go to Pilates class together. Like, there has to be this other shared thing. And it's like, oh, we're both expats, and we both had to, like, start a whole new life somewhere. And I'd imagine Brooke that it's quite challenging to do that with two kids, like, I imagine, like, because you had already written the book by then, the original Pilates Body Book, and then you move. And so then you're like, you have a whole life. You're a best selling author, and then you're like, a mom trying to get two kids into school.Brooke Siler 10:54  Actually, that was the whole point was I had been kind of this, the Pilates Body author, since 29 years old, 30 years old, right? So I was like, Who? And I started Pilates at 26 years old. So here I was 46 or something. I was like, who am I without this? Like, half my life has been this. Can I just be a mom? So when I moved here, I came with my husband's name, like, I was like, I'm not gonna say Siler, I'm not going to tell anyone I do Pilates. My stuff was in the garage. Like I am to be mom, and that's what I can't or mom, my kids totally do not have English accents, but so, yeah, that's what I was going to do. So I joined the PTA because I'm that person, and I, yeah, I made like, you know, we went to the pub and did the pub quizzes and did all that stuff while the kids were in school. I was mama, and of course, then what did I end up doing, teaching the teachers Pilates for free. I was like, hey, let me come and give you guys Pilates because you I like, how do you do this with kids that's so challenging. Let me do something for you. So I came and started teaching every Friday, giving them Pilates session, you, I can't get away. You can't get away from it like it's who you are. If you're a teacher, you're a teacher, and if your art is is Pilates. Like, you know, I feel like my, my vocation is teacher, and my, my medium is Pilates, you know.Lesley Logan 12:15  I understand that. I think like I, you were all going to teach something that happened, that we, you know, someone probably told all of us that we should become a teacher, and we're like, okay, I'll do that thing. Yeah, yeah.Brooke Siler 12:29  Pulled me back in. And it wasn't till lockdown. That's when Maria and I really came together, and that's when, yeah, my whole Pilates World opened right back up again.Lesley Logan 12:40  Interesting. So, like, did you guys? Because, I mean, obviously we've heard, like, I think it was Esther Peral was, like, the Covid was, like, the great accelerator, like, if you were gonna do something, it was gonna, you were gonna do it, and it's gonna do it faster. So you're either gonna, like, if you're gonna break up with someone, you broke up with them faster. If you were, like, Brad and I, we picked up our life and moved as well, and I did it three years earlier than we thought we ever could. And, and, and so, like, was that the great accelerator for your friendship? Was it a way that you guys got deeper because there was not as many distractions? How did that go?Brooke Siler 13:09  Yeah, what do you think Maria?Maria Earle 13:11  I think so. I mean, I so agree with the great accelerator. I mean, I always think about, I mean, for our friendship, for sure, but also, you know, stepping into, stepping into newness, in terms of professionally, stepping into things that, otherwise, you know, it was the kind of the kick in the ass that I needed for a number of things that I'm totally happy to talk about. Lesley Logan 13:36  Yeah.Brooke Siler 13:38  (inaudible) About it because we were, like a little women's group. There was four of us.Lesley Logan 13:42  Yeah, okay, if I obviously, what happens in a women's group stays in women's group. But like, if there's something we can talk about from women's group, I would love to because I think this is where, this is where a lot of women I find our listeners are, they can get really lonely, or they they want community, and they seek community, but then, you know, someone doesn't show up to something, and it gets easy to take it personally. Like, how did you guys have a women's group, and what did you just talk about?Brooke Siler 14:07  It was, it was a movement. I mean, we were working out together, is what it was. So, like, two, three times a week, we were working out together and.Maria Earle 14:15  And then doing a lot of chatting afterwards. (inaudible) Talk about, like, set your morning aside. I mean, like, don't book any clients until after 12. There is just, there's just too much that needs to pass.Brooke Siler 14:33  Everything, you know, everything that was happening in Covid that was so amplified was happening around us. And so we would sometimes, you know, we'd get on the we'd go to work out, but someone had had a morning, something had happened, someone had seen something and and we would, you know, tears and sharing, and yeah, we yeah, all the things happened, yeah, yeah. But it was an unlikely like, none of us really knew each other knew each other before. And, yeah, we're an interesting foursome, actually.Lesley Logan 15:03  I love but I love it because it's like, I think, you know, you said side of the time, and it just evolved naturally. But also, like, when women do get together and they're and they share that, and they can be vulnerable, you know, they say, like, you know, movement is how, like, we like, trauma can leave the body. We can heal the body. Like, it's so important. I have a yoga class that I go to, and the first few minutes are kind of somebody bitching about something, and then we get into the yoga and then by the time the yoga is over, whatever that was like, moved out of all of us. And then, and then you can wrap up the conversation, if somebody needs to. And I sometimes kind of wish it went an hour longer, you know, I can imagine what a wonderful way to, like, very therapeutic.Brooke Siler 15:44  There's the physical workout and the emotional workout. They both kind of conjoined. Maria Earle 15:50  Yeah and when you just, when you just commit to it, you just lock into it, and that just becomes your non negotiable. Like, that's just, that's just what I do on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings, like, you know, sometimes things would come up, but we.Brooke Siler 16:07  We're committed to one another, to ourselves and to one another. Lesley Logan 16:10  Yeah. And that's like, so, okay, this is the hard part, right? Because, like, we're all teachers here. And like, we have the clients who, like, you know, they want to come three times a week, and then they and then they book, you know, this coffee date and this thing. And then we have the teachers who also say they want these things, or the women who are like, not necessarily teachers, because this is not most of the people don't even do Pilates listeners. But like the people, like they're they want this, but it is a commitment, like it is an actual like, you are not just coming Tuesdays and Thursday mornings until noon, but you're making sure everyone in your life knows about it so that it's things do come up, but they're kind of rare, because there's rarely, like, an actual emergency that can't be done on another day, like, there's, you know. So how did you guys, like, how did did you tell, like, Maria you have a kid, did you tell your one kid and Brooke, I'm assuming your kids are a little older now, but like, were they aware that, like, hey, leave me alone. This is my private time. How did you get the commitment to be something you could come to without the pressures of, like, all the guilt of all being a mom?Maria Earle 17:07  I don't know. I blocked it out. Brooke Siler 17:09  Yeah, me too. What guilt? That was our time?Maria Earle 17:15  No, I don't know. It's funny because I actually, I.Brooke Siler 17:20  Also we have boys, I feel like that needs to be said (inaudible).Maria Earle 17:25  Yeah, maybe, I mean, you know, it could have been messy, like, I don't know, but I know that it was time, not only well spent, obviously, But it was time that was so important to me that I just, I figured out how to make it work. And, you know, maybe sometimes I could only log in for a little while, or, you know, sometimes I'd say, like, I gotta, I gotta go. I gotta go, you know, I I just, I want to, I want to check in. I want to say that I love you, and like, hi, but like, I have all this going on. I, that's it. That's all I got for you. They'd be like, you know, bye, we need just that little bit of like, you got this, you know. Lesley Logan 18:16  Well and it also it sounds so it sounds a little bit like one, you know, you needed it for yourselves, and like, you did that, and they were, like, unapologetic about that. And then two, you found the right people that would understand if you couldn't, and they wouldn't take it personally, and they wouldn't hold it against you. And I think that's where a lot of people have screwed up in their groups, of their friendships. It's like they kind of have kept people from a long time, and you know, like, aren't good at voicing what they need or or even knowing what they need. So then it, it gets muddled, and it becomes an uncomfortable situation.Brooke Siler 18:48  I'm I'm wondering now if maybe what worked in our favor was that we weren't friends beforehand, really. We kind of we, we solidified the friendship, but actually we grew the friendship in lockdown. So we were learning about each other. So it was not only the interest in showing up to move, but we were also interested, I think, you know, in each other and one another, and each one of us had so many amazing things happen to us. You know, Alicia started a podcast, and Karen, like, set up her studio. And, you know.Brooke Siler 19:18  Maria bought. Maria Earle 19:20  Oh yeah, I bought my studio (inaudible). Brooke Siler 19:23  We were there for for all these things, you know. And we could share, like, hey, what do you guys think? And each one of us so has a different kind of forte, and we just feel like the universe just kind of made that all happen. So, without too esoteric, it really was yeah meant to be we and we yeah I think it became that, like.Maria Earle 19:45  It became a rock.Brooke Siler 19:46  You do, yeah.Lesley Logan 19:48  Yeah, and then and, I mean, like, life the world is open. Have you been able to keep the Tuesday and Thursdays together, like you guys still hanging out? Brooke Siler 19:57  It became different. It's shape shifted. It's. Not the same. It's more like, you know, yes, the world is open. There's so many other things going on. I mean, listen, I had to write a book just to see Maria again. I mean, that there was that moment of like, yeah, after having written the book, I was then like, oh, someone actually has to be the model in this. Who and I just, it was immediate. It wasn't even, like, a second I didn't even have a second choice. Like, had she said, no, I was screwed.Lesley Logan 20:31  So, so, so we're, I mean, of course, everyone's like, hold on. We have so many questions about this. Like, women's group, but we're gonna move on, guys, because we only have so much time. But like, if you, if you Brooke Siler's name does not ring a bell from The Pilates Body book, but, but that we, you know, I've literally moved with every apartment. It ever moved with me and into this house, and it didn't even go into a closet, like it's on the shelf. You know, because I think it represents, like the time when I was, like, I was, I believe so much that people can have an independent Pilates practice. And because I was like, but this book gave me that, like, I was able to have an independent Pilates practice. And I I think that, like, that's so necessary for the world we all live in today, to have, you know, to have enough Pilates in our life, whether you're a teacher or not, you need to have some way of doing it. So I was trying to look it up before we started talking, when did you write this book the first time?Brooke Siler 21:24  I started writing it in 1999 and it was published in 2000. Lesley Logan 21:28  Okay, so that's wow, so it's been 25 years. So then you had so then you're like, I'm gonna write it again. I guess.Brooke Siler 21:36  I was like, we should celebrate. It's 25 years, and I still have people coming and saying, oh, my God, my career started because of Pilates, because of The Pilates Body, and that was the first book I ever had, and I've heard that for 25 years, and it felt like, definitely, you know, the, Pilates is bigger now than ever. And I was like, how amazing would it be if we if we did a 25th anniversary, and I brought my literary agent, and she was like, yes, love the idea. And then we brought it to an editor, and they were like, yes, love the idea. And they were like, but, and I just thought, actually, I could, you know, there's that one copy of the Joe Pilates book where it's two of his books together. I thought it was going to get off really easy and just combine the first two books. And so I said to the editor, can't we just put the two together and make it.Lesley Logan 22:21  This one too. Brooke Siler 22:22  Yes, exactly. Wouldn't that be perfect? And then I don't have to do anything. And they were like, No, you have to put new material in there. And I was like, oh, okay. So I hear the things that are of interest to me at this time, like I'm doing a lot of deep work on breathing. I'm doing a lot of deep work on this (inaudible) and that's a whole nother topic, but they chose one, and that was what I went with. And so when I started doing the deep digging, it was, I mean, I had already done the deep digging, I should say, but then starting to try to put it into terms that could be easily understood, and how to make it blend deeper with Pilates. And it was stuff that I was doing that we were doing in our Tuesdays, Thursdays, you know, I always come with ideas. I'm like, hey guys, let's try this thing I've been playing with. And there they were just always game. They were very generous with me and allowing me to test out all of my crazy ideas on them. And yeah, so this one just kept sticking. And then I was teaching online classes, and people were like, writing me afterwards, going, Oh my God, I feel amazing. I can't believe, like, what this feels like. And I was like, okay, cool. So I not only wrote it, but I was like, listen, it's 25 years. I'm going to rewrite all the they didn't give me a budget to do all the photos again. So the photos are the same as they were, and the layout is the same, but I pretty much rewrote everything, like, I updated the language and put in new variations and a lot of archival, you know, just bringing Joe into it, because lockdown, I dug deep, deep in Joe's, you know, treasure trove, and put, like, instead of looking outside of Pilates, I just went back in. I feel like it's that when you go to the dentist, and they used to have the treasure chest and you could pick a toy, it's like, I just went, I did a deep dive into the, Maria, I did a deep dive in and found all. Lesley Logan 24:11  Maria, your dentist didn't have a treasure chest because mine did. And an aquarium, okay? And I would watch the rocket fish go across like I was my favorite.Brooke Siler 24:20  Yes, exactly, yes. So I just yeah, I think, you know, I was pulling stuff out and trying stuff, and they were loving it. And that's the way my mind works. I feel like lockdown for me was an incredible like, everything shut down, out, out, and my brain just went absolutely mad creative. Like I just couldn't stop creating. It was, it was amazing. Lesley Logan 24:44  So you're listening to this everyone. The book is already out, like we're talking about this before I've had my hands on a copy. And of course, I'm like, now (inaudible) even more than I was when you first told me about it, but like I do so and I'm excited to hear what Maria's response was like. Like to also You were telling her, I'm gonna redo this. Like, there is something about, like, Okay, I think we should celebrate. It's gonna be easy. But then it's like, okay, great. Now I've get to redo it. The in the redoing, it's like, you there's things that you can change, because you've had 25 years of teaching on top of it, 25 years of testimonial, 25 years of hearing people say they love this, or have questions about this, like, not many people get a redo and in life, you know, so. So Maria, when she came to you and said she was redoing this, is there anything that like you were the most excited about, that you were like, like, what? What part did you get to explore with her, that you were excited to be in the book?Maria Earle 25:38  Well, my, my role is a very tiny, tiny little role.Lesley Logan 25:43  No way, no way, no.Brooke Siler 25:47  Let's just call bullshit on that. I mean, it's not.Maria Earle 25:50  That is not true. What I mean to say is that, basically, as Brooke said, right, she had been developing these ideas and had an opportunity to basically add a new section to the book. And needed, and needed wanted to have somebody to to be the model for that new chapter. And I got to be someone who sort of got to be in the behind the scenes, like I got to sort of be in her brain a little bit while she was, you know, having this explosive sort of creativity moment, you know, I got to, I got to experience firsthand, you know, her process. And that was amazing. And, you know, I mean, I guess we could joke a little bit about this Brooke, because she she said she sort of hinted to it earlier when she said that, you know, she wanted me to do the book, but you know, she was like, if she said, no, you know, what was I going to do, right? You know, so I think so it took her a little while because she knew that I might like run for the hills when she's asking me to be the, you know, the model.Brooke Siler 27:05  The Pilates Body to be out there. Yeah. Maria Earle 27:08  I was like, Brooke, are you crazy? You know, is like my first reaction, you know. So, you know, do you want to do this? You know, before I'm 50 or after I'm 50, you know, I do you? You know who you're talking to, right? You know I was like, so is this, like a wedding boot camp kind of thing that I need to, like, get myself, like, totally, like, in shape or whatever.Lesley Logan 27:49  Whatever that means, yeah, yeah, yeah.Maria Earle 27:51  And she was like, No, I want you to just be you and talk about leap of faith. Talk about, like, stepping into, like, the scary bits and saying, Okay, I I trust you, yeah, and I believe in your vision, and I want to step into that space 100% because it is what I believe. Like, let's celebrate, let's celebrate the body as it is, like, let's, let's give it a whole another dimension here, you know, let's cut through the bullshit of what it means to have a Pilates body, and let's reframe that dialog. And no, I'm not going to get photoshopped as much as I, you know that little my head is like, well, could. Brooke Siler 29:04  We had a lot of conversations. Maria Earle 29:05  Couldn't they just a little, no, right? So it's like this, like inner dialog of over months and months, you know? And that is powerful and beautiful. And I, I could not have asked for am better partner to to do that with, and, you know, a safe space to like, be, no, I'm going to step into this, and I'm going to do it big, and it's going to be, it's going to be yeah and and, yeah. It feels great to be a part of something that is, it's bigger than me. It's bigger it's bigger than the book. It's bigger than us together. It's bigger than all of it. It's, it's, it's, it's about this reframing what what it is to be in our bodies. And to embodied and to and to celebrate all the different phases. I mean, my size has never defined me, and I have been, you know, I am not the size I was when I was 25.Lesley Logan 30:18  Nor I and probably not, right? I I love that we're going here, because I just have to say, like, we're recording this two weeks after so my youtube channel hit 40,000 subscribers, which I'm at the time, this is where, and I was so freaking stoked, because, like, I did it without, like, putting I did it without, like, doing a, you know, tits and ass workout, without, like, you know, the fake Pilates, like, we'll call it Pilates, but it's just, mostly just sit ups, like, I did it without, like, put on, I did it with, like, just educational support. And I'm so proud of what we did. And on the day that we hit 40,000 somebody wrote, your stuff is really great, but you used to be thinner, and it was really, the videos are really great when you were thinner. What happened? Of course, other subscribers are like, this is not helpful. This is why teachers and trainers are afraid to gain weight. Like, wonderful, supportive stuff and to and like, my response to this per and the person doubled down. So in case we're wondering, like, maybe it's a cultural thing, like, we have a house in Cambodia, and people will inquire, like, oh, you're bigger. Why? Because maybe you're rich. They want it like, like, you know, like, that's kind of different cultures. Have different experiences. So, so I was trying to like, so in case we thought maybe it's a cultural translation thing. No, they doubled down. They said it's a calories in, calories out. She could have better discipline. Oh, and to which I got pissed off, because I don't, I don't have the body I had at you know, when I discovered, when I when Pilates discovered me at 22 like I am, first of all, I am no longer sick. I no longer have digestive issues. I now absorb nutrition. I also like happen to look a lot better with curves. Thank you very much. But I, for the record, like I told I went online and told people, yeah, I've gained 40 pounds. I am the most disciplined person I know. I probably do Pilates more than people other people do who have different bodies than me. You cannot have fat phobic comments on my channel. This is wrong for so many reasons. I hope you have space and grace for yourself and others when your body's changed, because they will and it's and I really appreciate you sharing that journey, Maria, about your body too. It's like, I think so many teachers and so many women are afraid to put themselves out there, whatever their thing is. We can even switch Pilates to being an author, being a speaker or being a doctor, like every woman is so afraid. Well, I don't look like whatever x is supposed to look like. And so people are going to judge me. And then, because they don't put themselves out there, because they're afraid they'll be judged, then the only people that are out there are 22 year olds in their super cute outfits that have never looked good on me. And so, of course, like so then people think that's what it is. And so then we have this whole misunderstanding. Brooke Siler 33:05  It's really, it's a, it's, yeah, it is dysmorphia, and it's a really sad commentary, and it's, and, you know, I'm, don't let me get started on a patriarchy, because I will. Lesley Logan 33:16  We can, but yeah. Brooke Siler 33:19  You know, it's, it's this. It's not only an unrealistic ideal, but like, who's even the one coming up with that shit? It's just ridiculous. And the thing is, we've all bought into it at some stage in our lives. And certainly it's something that, you know, it can be on so many different levels. But Maria and I were talking about this too. There was plenty of times, like, even, you know, you'd want to Photoshop this, or there's the cellulite there, and there's the whole thing, and in the end of the day, we're wiser than we've ever been in our lives. We are more powerful in our own ways than we've ever been in our lives. We can move beautifully in at our this age in our lives. I started taking tennis last year. I go three times a week. One, I've never in my life played tennis. I started at 56 you have to love that and like, fuck it. I don't care if my thighs are thicker. I'm like, really enjoying what I can do in this body. And that's what a Pilates body always was. I did even look back in 2000 when I wrote the book, the if you go through the three models at the beginning, there is a passage at the Afterword that says, I chose these three models because of their they were teaching because they're teachers. Their ability to do the actual movements and endure the long photo shoots of the day, they happen to work for me. So that was very easy. They were there. I didn't do like a whatever they call that, a model call, you know, they they worked for me, so it was perfect. They were amazing teachers who were had modern dance backgrounds, so they were strong as shit, and they were beautiful. And I wrote, I hope in earnest, that they that they inspire and don't intimidate. And I wrote that in 2000 because for me, I already knew it's not about having a skinny you know, body, a particular type of body. It was just they were there to model the work, and I knew they could do it. And these are longer days of shooting. So with Maria, I knew her. I knew her work, because we've been working out together for years, and I could see her power and what she could do with her body. And I thought actually in the way she moved, coming from Kathy Grant, but she has this beautiful way of moving different than what I experienced from Ramana. So I loved it, and I thought it fit so perfectly. And it was very much about, you know, it's got a lot of Maria in it too, which is this beautiful, you know, soul. It's about sensing internally. And so it's, it's a kind of, it's a really nice, I think, flip. It's not that the work. I mean, she killed it, I will say, and I'm just going to admit this, I knew she was going to do an amazing job. I really, I can't actually believe how incredible she was, really. And she knows I say this all the time to her, because she, she killed it. She was a superstar rock star, like, if she couldn't get the thing, she was like, save it. We'll do it again at the end. Like she just, there was determination, like, nothing I've ever seen. It was a very long day of shooting, and I it was like, yeah. I was like, wow, that was really the right choice. I mean, I knew it was the right choice from the beginning. It was, it was a no choice choice. She was a no choice choice. It was just gonna be Maria or it was gonna be no one, and thank God, she took a day, I think, like a day, right when I asked you, and then, like, the next day, she was like, right, I'm good. Because I remember saying to my husband, like, what if she didn't do it? Like, I needed to be her. It's just her. It just was her. It was like, meant to be you. So. Lesley Logan 36:40  Oh yeah, but I, and I, Maria, first of all, like, I don't, I you, there's something about you that's just so magical that you could even, I don't even know, I don't know if I could take the day, I probably would have been like, I'm fucking scared. And, you know, but you know, like, I don't what, what did you think about? What did you? Did you journal? Like, what did you, what? How did you how did you contemplate the decision? Because you're correct, it's hard to find the words for it. It is going to be bigger than this book is any bigger because, because the book was already bigger than Brooke already, and so and so. And also I just want to say, like, I love that there. I love that the height of Pilates being so popular. This book is coming out again, because I do think it brings some authenticity to the work that we're doing. So what did you do during the day to, like, come to the decision we all want to know how you contemplated?Maria Earle 37:30  Well, I think, I think definitely it was a process. It was a number of conversations, you know, and and I knew in my heart that I that I had to say yes, I knew that it would be a major regret if I let fear and you know, like the little the little naysayers, you know you shouldn't be doing that, or what business do you have? You know nobody wants to see you know you. I knew that all those little voices that I ultimately would regret letting them win. So I knew that I had to say yes, and then basically I had to work backwards from the yes to convince myself that I was okay and that, that, you know, and luckily, luckily, I got good people on my corner, so, so whenever I felt like I needed to, oh God, oh God, what have I done? I'm not ready for that. Wait. I need that boot camp, you know, I maybe, if I did lose, you know, the 20 pounds that I've gained, you know, in the past 10 years, perimenopause is kicking my ass, you know, what if I, maybe I could, oh, God, like whenever I would sort of hit those high rev panic moments, you know, I just have to go to Brooke and whoever else was, were my rocks, you know. And you know, while I'm like, circling and, you know, and I can't land right, and they would be like, it's okay, we got you. This is going to be amazing. This is this and that, and.Brooke Siler 39:20  (inaudible) believing the people that see you like you almost have to see yourself through others' eyes like it was no doubt in my mind that you were perfect, perfect, but I just that's you know, you had to go through your process to get there, and I had to respect that. But yes, I was going to tell you how amazing and beautiful and stay as you are and like, think about how many people get to look and say, Oh, I feel that's me. I'm there. I'm being represented. It's, yeah.Maria Earle 39:52  I mean, because it's important. It's about, it's about really stepping into, stepping into that space, and that stepping into that space is really scary, but I show up that way from my clients every day, yeah, but I don't necessarily show up for myself in that way, and that is something that I don't like to admit. So I am admitting it here, and I'm admitting it now, but you won't ever hear me say it again. No, I'm joking. (inaudible) Maybe now I'll be able to say it more often, which is, like, I, you know, I fall into the same body traps, you know, even though I, I will with my clients and with the teachers who I work with, and, you know, my friends, I like show up with body positivity, and you are beautiful and you are powerful. And I don't, let's not worry about the, you know, the extra little curvy there, like, let's get strong. Let's get moving. Because it's about the moving, and it's about feeling strong, feeling great in your body. It's not about how your body looks. I do that for people all day long. And then when it comes to myself, it's like, right? Until it's like eating you up inside. And so and so the process, the process is not overnight. It's like a long term, term thing. And you know, the book's gonna come out, and I'm probably gonna hide under my covers for every day. Lesley Logan 41:17  For a few minutes, and then we're all gonna drag you out.Brooke Siler 41:21  We're coming in after you for sure (inaudible0.Lesley Logan 41:25  I'm gonna text you the day after it comes out to make sure that you're like, I I appreciate and that you said those things, because it's true. Like, I think we all hear like we're all that for our clients, like they body shame themselves, like, hold on, we're reframing that. And in the process of loving the body that I'm growing into. And, you know, there is all the things, because we were raised in, as our brain was developing, we were raised with the five minutes of tone here, the this here, like I was in modeling, and, of course, like I was like, working out all the time. And you guys went at a commercial agent and a modeling agent, and on the same day, the modeling agent said you're not thin enough, and my commercial agent said you're getting too skinny. And I was like, oh, I don't actually know what to do today. Like, I don't know what to do today because I'm now not hireable in commercials, according to you, but I'm not hireable enough because the modeling agency want to be a fitness model, but I wasn't toned enough to be a fitness model, but I wasn't skinny enough to be a model, model, and so, like you so and so here's, here's what I did. You guys, my agents were across the street from a fonuts, which is, if you've ever been to L.A., it's a non fried, gluten free donut shop. Okay, so the donuts are not fried. It's only gonna happen in L.A. and I I fucking went to the donut shop. I was like, fuck it. I don't even know what to do, and I consciously eating my feelings. Right now, I am an adult enough to understand. I do not, I have a therapy session around this, but I was just like, no one is going to be happy. And that is what I like sat on this bus stop with my donut, and I remember, like, no one's happy, and I told my husband, I said, I think I'm gonna let go of the agents. And I don't know what that means, because I don't I wasn't like wasn't like, wasn't like, I was I wasn't a dream of mine, but I was also like, I can't like, I can't handle these people and my own thoughts, like my own reaction, like, I can't my own thoughts of like my body changing and who I'm becoming, and trying to get healthier and absorb B vitamins, you know, anything to live on this planet like, and also have outside people tell me things like, so I that was, that was when I actually let go of but I will say, like, because we all go through that we can be very body positive and still have these things about ourselves. And I, I think it's hard to admit, but it's also like, it's, it's just honest, and it's a process, because I do think that in people falling in love with their bodies and seeing different bodies doing these strong exercises, they're still going to have their own thoughts to themselves. I can't do that. That's not what my body like all the and we have to go, you're going to have all those thoughts, and you're still invited to this party, because, like, we should have always been moving for the health of it and not for the shape of it. And I don't know when we stop working out for the shape. I don't know when that stops, but I do appreciate your honesty there, Maria. And I think it's I'm excited for what people are going to say and see and do.Maria Earle 44:37  Yeah, and also I would say, I would say something about to sort of bring a couple threads through that in that deep dive that Brooke did, like really looking into the archival work and looking at, you know, the pictures that Joe took doing his mat work, like we we sat with the book, you know, during the photo shoot, like we sat with the book and we were like, how is he doing this? As opposed to, and no, no zero shade, but different than looking at a manual or the gorgeous models that were in book one, right, that were all contemporary or ballet dancers who were making shapes, beautiful shapes, that were in very much influenced by the an esthetic that comes from dance. So you know, Mr. Pilates' swan is not a full extension with fingertips facing the ceiling, right? But we have that in our manual as like, that's what the swan dive is supposed to look like, right? And so we bought into an esthetic that doesn't necessarily, really, it's not, it's an it's an it's just that, it's just the esthetic, period, right.Brooke Siler 46:09  It doesn't even serve the body in the same way that when you realize what Joe was asking, and I always kind of joke about this, how many times I looked at those pictures in the book before lockdown, you know, for years before, because Romana had them on her walls and all of that. And in my mind, he was not in great form, not matching what I was being told. So, like, he needs to do this, he needs to soften his knees. He needs to and then when I started, really, and I've read those books a lot of times. I mean, honestly, before lockdown, I had already they were dog eared and highlighted in every color anyway. But then I went back in and, you know, every time you reread something, you read it with new eyes you because it's where you are. You need it. It meets you where you are in that moment, and it met in this place that was so perfect, because I really read it, I really I heard it, I saw it, and I thought, let me try what he's actually saying, because I had not, not done that. I just, blind faith, went with what I knew from my teacher, of course, who you know again, no shade there, either. Like, fantastic. It got me so far. But then being able to take Joe's words and his vision and his you know, he wanted to help us really be in our bodies and move better during the day. So when we did it that way, when we really got into the nitty gritty of what he was asking, and then the feeling like Maria was saying after the photo shoot, that she was like, Oh my God, I feel incredible. Like, not exhausted, and, I mean, maybe exhausted from the energy of it, but like, the feeling in the body is a good feeling, as opposed to.Maria Earle 47:53  Not fighting the body I was not, I was not fighting myself doing the exercises. I think that's, I think that's really, I think there's really something to that, you know, that you're not in a battle against you and the exercise, or you and the shape, and you trying to get into the shape, be the shape and and, you know, you'll see, you'll see the pictures. It's, it's not rocket science. It's not anything incredibly incredible. It's actually pared down. It's actually not performative, and therefore it's, it's, it's gonna resonate at a different level. And for some people, they're gonna be, like, it's just that.Brooke Siler 48:42  I said there's gonna be people who just rip the new chapter off and throw it away.Maria Earle 48:46  Like, well, what is this? You know. But if you're ready for it and you're in, you're willing to, like, excavate, and do the, do the work, as they say, right, then you're going to be like, Oh, this is this. This there. This is different. This feels different. This is, this is me being in my body in a different way. It's in my body in my way, as opposed to in somebody else's way, where I'm trying to, you know, do that, yeah, that what's happening down there at the end of the line.Brooke Siler 49:34  Very internal chapter in its own way. You can, you can enjoy it for the beautiful photos. But really, what's happening inside Maria in it is what's really, it's about and, and it's, you know, it will, it will be a new thing that people can take or leave. But it's really, I dug deep, and then I combined it with this natural thing called pandiculation. Which is what dogs, our pets, do all the time. You know, this, this lengthening and it's and then when I looked at the archival footage, pictures of Joe and the videos, I was like, Wait, that's what he's doing. And that's what he was saying, natural law of nature, how we move. Watch the animals. I was like, you know it was. And so, yeah.Lesley Logan 50:23  Yeah, yeah. I, I'm, thank you for saying what pandiculation was because I was like, I'm gonna have to look that up.Brooke Siler 50:28  And by the time you're, you know, this comes out, you will.Lesley Logan 50:32  but I can't wait for that. But I it's true. Like, my, my dog gets out of bed every morning, and he does both stretches, right? And I like, look at that. I'm like, I don't, I don't get out of bed and go. Lesley Logan 50:41  But he, you know when he does it 30 or 40 times a day. And they do it every time they move, because we don't like if you try to stretch your dog, they don't like stretch. If you try to pull your dog's leg, they don't like that. What dogs are doing? Pandiculation was fascinating. And when we do it, when we it's basically the word for yawn and stretch. It was developed in the 70s, whatever. Anyway, when you yawn and stretch, we think we're stretching, but we're actually contracting. So when you do this, you're not actually stretching the front. You're contracting the back of you and then releasing. And it becomes a signal that's sent to the brain so you actually learn how to regulate your muscle tension. It's phenomenal. Joe didn't say the word pandiculation, but he absolutely asked us to do what the animals do, and that's what the animals do, because it circulates your blood. It's so freaking cool. I just can't wait. I honestly, you know. Lesley Logan 51:37  I keep watching. I sent Brooke a little gif of, like, someone like, watching the mailbox. I'm watching the mailbox. I'm like, she's like, Lesley, I don't have my copy yet. And I'm like. Brooke Siler 51:47  My copy, yeah, no, I can't wait. Lesley Logan 51:49  I I'm really, I'm really stoked for this. I think, I think also, we're ready. I think there's a huge part of the community that's ready for our conversation about this. I think women who are, like, seeking actual Pilates class, are seeking this conversation, and I think you're giving people permission to do it at home, which has always been something that, like, I'm a huge fan of like, I just think that, like, we keep saying we want Pilates to be accessible, but it's not necessarily like about the price of classes, y'all. It's like making sure they have the ability to do it independently, on their own, because I truly believe that that is where confidence is built. It's like creating this agency within themselves. Like, I can do this, you know, I can look at me, I can do these. I can do this move. I can I can feel this in my body, and then go on the day. Like, I think women especially need that internal strength and agency that, yes, it's great to have a teacher like any one of us, to have eyes on you and like to give you some actual corrections. But also, I think sometimes we are always outsourcing. People are like, what are we? Am I good enough to somebody else's opinion and and really, I just want women to have that. So when you Brooke told me about this, I was like, fuck yeah, I'm in whatever it is you're doing I'm in,Brooke Siler 53:06  Developing that sense of internal trust, instead of always asking for the approval to come from the outside. Way to get to start approving of ourselves, feeling that we can trust what we feel, what we know. I don't care if you're I always tell my class it doesn't matter what I say. Literally, if I come over and I'm in your face saying, lift your leg. Lift your if it is not right for you, do not do it. Do not listen to me. Please. You have full permission not to listen to me. Listen to you. Only you are in your body. Only you know what you're feeling. So it has to be a joint you know, conversation that's happening, it can't just come from one side, so I am also really here for the conversations that will come from this and, yeah.Lesley Logan 53:53  Okay, we, I think the three of us could talk for hours, and we're, I'm already, I sorry, I looked at the clock. Hope you have a few more minutes. We're gonna take a brief break, and then find out where people can find you, follow you, work with you and your Be It Action Items. Lesley Logan 54:08  All right, ladies, we'll go. So what Maria? Where do you hang out? Where's your favorite place? She's gonna drink her tea. Where's your favorite place for people to connect with you? How can they work with you? What do you got?Maria Earle 54:23  So people can look me up, find me, contact me through my website mariaearle.com I also have an IG handle that is my name, Maria Earle, and yeah, I would say those are the two best ways to connect with me.Lesley Logan 54:41  Perfect, Brooke, what about you? And where can they buy this book? If they haven't gotten it already?Brooke Siler 54:47  It will be at all your favorite booksellers. I hope, I mean it's, you know, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, all those kinds of great places. And hopefully we'll get it into, you know, small bookstores too. I love the old (inaudible) bookshops.Lesley Logan 54:59  But also, they don't sponsor the show, but I heard, I heard it's bookshop.org, y'all, if you want to support small business, small bookstops, you can look there and see if it's there. When you buy it there, then they send money to a local bookstore. I don't know how that works, but that's what the commercials say. And do you do you hang on Instagram? What's your website? Where can they find you for more?Brooke Siler 55:17  I think it's pretty simple. So it's BrookeSilerPilates, all one word, and that's the website. That's my Instagram handle, that's my Gmail account, BrookeSilerPilates@Gmail. (inaudible) It's a one-stop shop. Yeah, so you can and I'm very I do like, I am social. I do like sharing and hearing back from people. I feel like it's really funny on Instagram. I'll put something up and be like, tell me what you think. And everyone's like, this is great, but nobody answers like, the question, yeah. I'm like, no, no. I really mean it, like I actually want to be in a conversation with you, but.Lesley Logan 55:52  Yeah, no, I feel the same. Brooke, they don't, they don't do it for this year. Brooke Siler 55:55  Yeah. I don't need the flattery, like, thank you, but I don't need that. I just really, actually want to know what do you think and what do you what are you doing? And, yeah.Lesley Logan 56:04  Yeah, yeah. Well, you know what, that'll be our next that'll be our next thing is like, how do we get women to share what they're actually thinking without thinking what they're thinking is wrong, you know? But that's, that's another in the next 25 years. Okay, I feel like I have tons of takeaways, but I still we have to in the show how we always end it with our Be It Action Items, so bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted, steps people can take to be it till they see it. What do you have for us? Well, whoever wants to go first?Brooke Siler 56:34  I mean, yeah. I mean, so, you know, I listened to another podcast you did where that came up, and I realized that it was the orthodontist. She was wonderful, and yeah, and I was thinking I felt quite similarly. I just kind of never believed that I couldn't, that I can't. I just do I don't, I don't sit. And there are things that I sit in question for sure, I think I have, like many women, you know, the fear of being judged. Who the hell wants that? There's nothing nice about that. So there are times that, like putting myself out there can definitely, I can feel stopped, but I'm, I believe very much in pushing through that. And I, I have had a Buddhist mentor since for like, 18 years now and so. And she's always like, you know, the only way out is through. So you just, you push through. You go through that. So I push through fear. Like, if I see fear, I'm gonna head toward it. It may take me a while, but I'm going toward that number one and number two. I don't know if it's just some innate sense of confidence. I just when I have an idea, I want to share it. And when you, when I think of it as being something that I'm sharing, it doesn't feel like it's a scary thing. I'm like, I love it. You said you love it. Let's just do it, it. It's just like that. So I think, for me, when I think of it as sharing, rather than me doing something for you, then to react to it's much it just makes it much more palatable to move forward, because I love sharing. I'm a group, I'm a group, I'm a, I'm a. I like my independence. I like to be on my own. I do a lot of stu

On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson talks to three Golden State insiders who want to help you get the most out of your next trip to the state—no matter your budget. First, Johnson chats with Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director at Travel + Leisure. Ruggiero starts off by sharing the latest lodging travel trends and what she looks for in a great hotel. “Yes, you want a nice hotel, but you want to feel like you're actually in the destination that you're in,” she explains. Ruggiero then dives deep on her top picks for both high-end lodgings and wallet-conscious accommodations in West Hollywood, the Central Coast, Laguna Beach, and Palm Springs. Next, Johnson is joined by Farley Elliott, Southern California Bureau Chief at SFGate. Farley breaks down the best splurge-worthy dining spots in San Diego and offers up some wallet-friendly finds that still pack a punch. “If you're on a budget, I think most corner taco shops that you stop into [in San Diego] are going to treat you pretty right,” notes Elliott. He also delves into Michelin-starred cuisine and other high-end spots in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Santa Barbara. Finally, Johnson sits down with Carrie Cramer, an award-winning celebrity stylist and personal shopper. Cramer shares how to navigate California's shopping scene, from the high-end boutiques of Rodeo Drive and South Coast Plaza to local gems in Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Francisco.

Today's SceneStop brings us to a mall in Orange County, Ca called South Coast Plaza. It is here that my friendship with Brian Chu was forged. I used to visit MC, the guitar player of ICE, on his lunch break when he worked at May Company. Numerous times I ran into people from the Sloth Crew and OC Hardcore Scene in this malls hallowed halls. Also, I bought (for the second time) a copy Sierra Championship Boxing, a game I still play!, at this mall. This video was done with my dear friend Rick Wilson aka Uncle Slam aka Brains. His home hosted the OKTOBERFEST in which ICE played with TRIGGERMAN. Together we took a walk down memory lane where I recalled Brains and I spending a lot of time at this mall, and he maintained that those times didn't happen. Enjoy! These videos are part of an ongoing video series chronicling the hardcore punk music scene. They are an addendum to the film Orange County Hardcore Scenester. This is a documentary I made that chronicles the 1990s hardcore punk scene. He and I have recorded twice for his show in two different locations, so when we were scheduling this conversation, we made it a third, and it isn't just any location - we actually recorded this in my car. We met in Orange County to attend an event at the IWC Boutique at South Coast Plaza, so it served as an insanely convenient, quiet place for us to talk Monterey Car Week, his personal car journey, and of course his experience with watches. We get into the whys and hows of Pare Pare and Trevor also shares a bit about his day job as an employment defense lawyer. I'm super happy to call Trevor a friend and I'm equally as happy to share this chat with all of you. First, Johnson engages with Chris Epting, a seasoned travel writer and historian known for his extensive works on Orange County. Epting sheds light on a few lesser-known attractions, from live oak forests to the county's only grove of redwoods, each with intriguing histories. Epting also shares insights on local beach culture and the charming towns that dot the coast. “Every beach city here has such a different personality... Each one of them is really worth a visit," he explains. Epting also shares his favorite eateries, as well as a few quirky attractions from the past—including the tale of a fake ski mountain. Next up, Johnson talks with Chelsea Raineri, style and home editor at Orange Coast Magazine and the host of its podcast, The Zest. Raineri discusses Orange County's standing as a premier shopping and fashion destination, highlighting everything from luxury shopping malls to local boutiques. She raves about South Coast Plaza as a world-renowned shopping destination: “They have more than a dozen West Coast–exclusive boutiques. It's incredible,” she remarks. Man's word was severed from God's Word. Man fell from the realm of God's ability into the realm of human ability. In the realm of human ability, man is dependent upon his own resources … and the resources of man are limited to his mind and his body. The mind of man can only derive its knowledge through the senses of man's physical body. That is your mind can only derive through the senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell … unless you've learned to derive through faith in God. When Adam sinned, he was no longer a faith creature, faith died. The supernatural was lost and reason was born. But today that can be changed in your life. You may say to me, “I'm already a believer. I already know the Lord, Jesus.” But are you moving in faith? Are you serving God the way you'd like to: where you want to, and when you want to? If so, that's total freedom in Christ. If not, I've got the answer for you today. God is going to change your life and He's going to make you everything you want to be! In the book of Ecclesiastes we see that the preacher said, “Cast the bread―the message of God, the living bread―upon the waters.” And if we do, we will find it after many days. He tells us to give a portion to SEVEN. (The number SEVEN in the Bible is the number of completion.) God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. But the preacher tells us to also give a portion of the bread―the message that people need―to EIGHT. (The number EIGHT in the Bible is the number of new life.) He said to over-saturate. Now you may say to me, but aren't you afraid of overkill? Not with a message of life. My brothers and sisters, we can flood the Word of God into all the earth and it will do nothing but bless and heal and encourage people to know and serve the Lord. Jesus. I've got something I want to share with you. God told me to allow a miracle to be worked in your life. Now, do you know that you can allow miracles to be worked in the lives of others? If you'll obey God―and as you continue to obey―God will continue to bless you. I want to cast my bread upon the waters today. I don't know how many are listening to me right now in the different radio stations that we're on in the United States and other countries, but I'm going to cast my bread to YOU. I want you to be touched with the power and the healing love of God almighty and the learn how to loose the same into the earth: into every nation, tribe, tongue, and dialect that needs the bread of Jesus. We give a portion to seven―and also to eight―because someday the door may be closed to global evangelism … or any evangelism!. I want to ask you a question, my friend, are there some clouds in your life today? If there are some clouds, in your life, that's good news. The Bible tells us when the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth. You see, it's the rain that softens the soil that prepares the soil to receive the seed. It's the rain of God's Spirit that prepares the soil in your hearts and mind and life to receive the message of God. I don't know what you're going through right now, but the Holy Spirit knows. I SEE IN THE SPIRIT that there are two musicians in a room somewhere listening to me now. I hadn't planned to share this in this program, but I see you in the spirit. You're ready to quit your music ministry because you've been hurt by a well-known personality. And the Spirit of God has told me right now to tell you: “To go on, God's getting ready to use you more than he has ever used you before.” My friends, be encouraged in the Lord today. Are there some clouds in your life today? That's good news. The situation that you're in―possibly a problem―whatever it is in your life, it seems to be even tearing your heart apart. The words I speak right now are preparing the soil in your life and heart to receive the God's MIRACLES. God wants the BEST for you, my friend. You see … the rain softens the soil to prepare it for the seed. And later on the other rains come and moisten the seed that's in the soil preparing to germinate so the harvest can come to fruition. Rains come at different times in your life. One to prepare you to receive the message of God, another season to help the seed germinate and grow so the harvest can come forth in your life to bless the world around you. Be encouraged. If there are some clouds in your life today, they're going to empty themselves and you're going to be a fruitful, beautiful creation of God that will bless the world. You know, clouds are beautiful and rain is beautiful, too. God told me years ago, if I would just obey and go to the streets and preach the gospel to the cities and the nations of the world He would bless me. You know, I moved out in faith and God touched my life spiritually, mentally, physically, financially and materially. God worked MIRACLES for me. My friend, you don't need to be structured to serve God. You don't have to depend upon a big organization … or a little one. All you need to do is learn how to lean on the Lord Jesus Christ and honor Him as your covering―and follow the Holy Spirit. Be a blessing to the church and to the world. God will take care of you. I love to preach in the rain. One time God sent me to the streets to preach in a downpour of rain. I was drenched. I owned one suit in which I married and buried people and preached. My wife and I used to have a joke in the mornings. I'd get up and my wife would say, “Which suit do you want me to prepare today?” And I would say, “Well, why don't you get the gray one ready?” Well, it was the only one I had. But one time when God sent me to preach in a torrent of rain, I ruined that suit. All the way home I remember thinking, “I've ruined my clothes.” My shoes were already becoming mildewed on the way home. I started to be discouraged on the way home BUT God encouraged me and spoke to my heart, “You gave out and I will bless you back.” You know what? Within a day or two―after ruining that only suit that I wore day by day―a man called me from another state and said, “I cannot get your name out of my mind.” He said, “Do you need anything?” I said, “No, brother, I don't need anything. I have Jesus Christ.” And he said, “Well, I'd like to buy you some clothing.” He said, “Meet me at the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.” You know that man kept breaking hundred dollar Travelers Checks buying me clothes, and then giving you the change. He even got mad at me because I wanted to tithe out of the change. And I said, “Look, I've got a good enough thing going by paying God His tithes, don't stop it now.” So he kept breaking these hundred dollar Travelers Checks, kept buying clothes for me and giving me the change. God blessed me back for those clothes that I ruined in the rain with eight changes of clothing plus a pair of new kidskin leather shoes. I want to tell you, my friend, God will bless you abundantly if you serve him and don't look at the rain clouds. Don't worry about the rain in your life. That's a good sign. Just move in faith. Just sow the message of the Bread of Life. Has the Holy Spirit been speaking to you concerning a need in somebody else's life? As you see that need, go meet it. Don't worry about the rain clouds! Not only will you be blessed by being under the anointing of the Holy Spirit―because that's where the action is―but you'll also be blessed because you'll receive back from God as you give out in pure motivation. In this episode, Jeff and Steve discuss: Being God's ambassador. Reframing your view of wealth and coming to understand the purpose. Being defined by more than how the world sees you. Authentic relationships and safe spaces.   Key Takeaways: What defines you is not your identity, but the love that the God of the universe has for you. Wealth is a gift from God. It is a tool to better progress His work and His mission. It is amazing how much self gets into our best intentions. Make sure you are giving for the right reasons, and for the glory of God, rather than for your own ego. God is not a one-size fits all God. It is individual. Everyone is on their own faith journey.   "Wealth is as much a gift from God and it should be celebrated, not in a boastful way, but with thanksgiving." —  Steve Perry About Steve Perry: Steve Perry is a pastor by trade, having served in 2 congregations for 17 years, the later being the senior for 12 years. In 1975 he married Susie Segerstrom whom he met at Azusa Pacific University. Unbeknownst to him until their engagement Steve discovered that he was marrying into one of Orange County, CA pioneering families. Originally the Segerstrom family set out to be farmers in 1896 but all that would change when a major freeway came through their property and they decided to become developers, with their crown jewel being South Coast Plaza. This new reality of marrying into a wealthy family was not something that Steve was prepared for emotionally, spiritually and theologically. It took 20 years for Steve to finally discover the nexus where faith and wealth can co-exist biblically, joyfully and responsibly. In 1996, Steve co-founded what is now the National Christian Foundation office in California. What Does the Bible Say About Saving Money?

What does the Bible say about saving money? Does God want us to save money? Read on (or listen) to find out! Table of ContentsWe Develop the Habit of Spending or Saving MoneyThe Bible's View of Saving MoneyAvoiding Financial RegretsSaving Money the Right WayTaking Advantage of Time and InterestContrast Peter and PaulAccumulating Money Wrong WaysAvoid Gaining Money CorruptlyAvoid Gaining Money QuicklyWhat about Gambling? Is the Stock Market Gambling?Teach Your Children to SaveHelped by God After health- and fitness-related New Year's resolutions, such as exercising more, going on a diet, and losing weight, the second-most-common resolutions are financial. This would be good news, except that only 64 percent of New Year's resolutions last longer than the first month, and only 46 percent last longer than six months. Changing is hard! As a pastor, I've heard many people say, “I'm going to stop this,” or “I'm going to start that,” but then nothing changes. We get into the habit of doing things one way and it's difficult to do things differently. This is why the Bible warns us about losing good habits and developing bad ones: “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits'” (1 Corinthians 15:33).“They get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house” (1 Timothy 5:13 NIV).”“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:25). In chapters 11 and 13, we discussed avoiding going to the movies, eating out, or buying high-end coffee because all these purchases add up. The other risk is these activities become habit-forming. We Develop the Habit of Spending or Saving Money Notice the word or in the subhead above. We can't develop the habit of spending and saving money. They are mutually exclusive. Think of a plane trying to fly in two different directions. I've spoken with people who habitually spend money and defend their actions by talking about how much they have saved. They still develop the habit of spending money, but they've found a way to justify it. For some people, spending money moves from a habit to an addiction. Consider these testimonies. Although women are in view, men can have similar problems: Michelle feared the day her husband might discover her secret stash of credit cards, her secret post office box or the other tricks she used to hide how much money she spent shopping for herself. She said, “I make as much money as my husband and if I want a $500 suit from Ann Taylor, I deserve it and do not want to be hassled about it. So the easiest thing to do is lie.” Last year, when her husband forced her to destroy one of her credit cards, she went out and got a new one without telling him. She also said, “I do live in fear. If he discovers this new Visa, he'll kill me.“Men just don't understand that shopping is our drug of choice,” even while admitting that some months her entire salary goes to paying the minimum balance on her credit cards. She added, “Walking through the door of South Coast Plaza is like walking through the gates of heaven. God made car trunks for women to hide shopping bags in.“Shopping is my recreation. It is my way of pampering myself. When you walk into [a mall] and you see all the stores, it is like something takes over and you get caught up in it.” Three in five women admit to hiding purchases from their husband. These women are slaves to spending money, and as I said a moment ago, men have this problem too. The good news is all of us can change. Even if you're the biggest spender, you can develop the habit of saving money. The same fervor you had for spending, can be turned into a fervor for saving. You can become as excited about maxing your retirement account as you used to be about buying things. You can reach the point that you view every purchase as money you are unable to save. To put it simply: As much as spending used to be your habit,...

A powerhouse entrepreneur right out of high school, Joanna never worked corporate and chose the path less traveled. At 20 years old she formed her corporation, took all of her savings and produced a dance showcase in Hollywood called The King of Pop. With Joanna's quick (some might say crazy) work ideas, this venture quickly turned into a dance competition called Maxt Out now going on its 20th year.Using keen street smarts and with no professional business training, she created Jayvee Dance studio by the time she was 24 and built that business to 700 students. A true serial entrepreneur, Joanna sold that dance studio and prepared to design her next download (from The Universe).Joanna recognized a gap in conversations about mindset and physical form when it came to fitness and responded with the solution, The Fit Factor Studio; a wildly successful brick and mortar fitness studio catering to women, their mindset and living fully. In the process, Joanna's own work-life philosophy, built on the principles of asking better questions and getting really curious about life, inspired her to make the choice to close the physical doors and go completely virtual with The Live Fully Academy. Now serving women all over the world with her Three F's; Form, Fundamentals and Fun, a new thought leader for Gen X and Millennial women.Known for her open book candor and positive vibe, Joanna proposed to her city that she start a 5K run, it was then the Pumpkin Run 1K/5K/10K Halloween event was born. Her superpower is getting butts in seats, and this run brings 1,500 runners every year with no paid advertisements (a little fun fact for our fellow entrepreneurs). By the time she was 32 she was running four businesses and choosing for her. With learning how to choose herself, she now facilitates other female business owners to do the same. This summer Joanna launched two new podcasts - The Get Up Girl and Dance Your Life. The Get Up Girl is a rally cry for all the women who are different and were taught to choose for others, who are now ready to Get Up and choose for themselves. Dance Your Life is a podcast of dance conversations, for dancers, by dancers and developed to educate dancers all over the world with stories and wisdom.Awarded Woman of the Year Congressional Honor by Congressman Adam Schiff and Woman of the Year Congressional Honor by Judy Chu, Joanna is a well respected female business owner and creator. Named Business of the Year by her city along with many other business awards, Joanna has earned her way to the frontlines of business during times when choosing yourself and the roads less traveled were not celebrated. With the entirety of her career devoted to inspiring her sisters to wake up and live fully, 2020 is poised to be Joanna's biggest year yet. The Get Up Girl is her latest creation to surpass her upper limits and expand energetically to avenues she hasn't discovered yet, and YOU are invited for the ride as she redefines what getting back up really looks and feels like.Transcription:INTRODUCTION:Hello! Oh my God I am so excited that you're here. I am so excited that you are here. This is by far one of my most favorite interviews I've done so far truly love this woman I really can't even wait, I'm gonna dive into her in a second, but first one to say, I am so happy that you're here listening. You know, you could be doing a lot of things right now, and you are listening to this podcast. And I know, it's because you're looking for just a little something to get you through your day something remind you of who you are and why you're here. And it's I'm so grateful that you are taking your time maybe you're in a run or a walk, or doing errands and I'm happy to be in your ears. And if you're watching this on YouTube. Hello! I'm waiving right at you. So, you all, when I, when I think about the different people that I want to speak to, to bring to you. Part of it is my own oh I really want to talk to this person and cause I want to know what's going on their mind. This woman, you'll hear in the interview, but she, she truly changed the way I thought about things in the morning in one day, we we're out of the photoshoot and you'll hear the whole story in the interview so I want to give it away but I'm not kidding. Because of that moment, it changed how I ask questions, what I do and how I approach so many things. And this is what's so fun. You can feel like you're freaking absolutely 100% awesome because you are. And you can feel like you're not and that's okay but you're awesome and I'm so happy you're here so you can hear that reminder from me and the guests but you can feel like you're there. And then there can be this other little like little thing that someone says that like just moves that needle forward in a different way that helps you maybe into the freaking straight ahead you're looking a little bit to the left. And it's like, Oh, there's the thing that's that's the thing that's been missing link. And so, here, let me just edify her cuz she's freaking awesome please look in the show notes for her full for amazing, incredible 100% by out that will just have you going yeah. Wow. She is been awesome since she was a little girl, and maybe it will help you think about your whole life and journey and what got you to where you are right now, when you hear and read her by out. Cause like oh look at all the things that make you who you are. So Joanna Vargas Cradle to Life. A powerhouse entrepreneur right out of school. Joanna never worked corporate and chose the path less travelled. At 20 years old she formed her corporation, took all of her savings, and produced a dance showcase in Hollywood called The King of Pop. With Joanna's quick, some might say crazy work ideas, this venture quickly turned into a dance competition called Max Out which now going on its 20th year. Using keen street smarts, and with no professional business training she created JB dance studio by the time she was 24, and built that business to 700 students. A true serial entrepreneur Joanna sold that dance studio and prepared to design her next download From the Universe. Joanna recognize the gap of compositions about minds in physical form when it came to fitness, and responded with a solution. The Fit Factor Studio while the successful Brick and Mortar Fitness Studio catering to women their minds and living fully. In the process Joanna's own workout philosophy builds on the principles at asking better questions and getting really curious about life, inspire for them make the choice to close the physical doors and go completely virtual with the Live Fully Academy. Now serving women all over the world with the three F's - Form Fundamentals and Fun a new loop thought leader for Gen X and millennial women.Joanna has two new podcast the Get Up Girl and Dance your Life. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I need you to listen to this whole interview she is fire we go all over the place together I feel like we are definitely sisters in a past life, with a lot of fun chatting about different things and I really want to make sure that you hear her tips at the end because she is not just a girl who talks the talk and inspires. She is a girl who has super actionable things that if you start to incorporate your life, even one of these things, I know, it's going to help you prioritize yourself in a different way, and really make sure that you are I mean living flat like she says. So, also, I know that this is the hardest things it's like intro-ing this episodes and not giving away all the things. But I can't even wait for you to hear something she does with one of her friends that I, I swear, I may have to do this with my husband on a monthly basis of a date doing this thing because it's like just such a fun way to look at the future of your life, and I can't even wait for you to listen to that.So with that, we'll be right back for the full interview after this message.-----Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guests will bring Bold, Executable, Intrinsic and Targeted steps that you can use to out yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.EPISODE:Lesley Logan - 06:33Alright, everyone, I have the Joanna Vargas here with us today. And I'm, y'all I'm so grateful. And I met this woman. And we were in a mastermind. There's like 50 people, but we kept getting paired together. And there was something about her that I just wanted to know more about, and the way things worked out. Because even though we both lived in LA at the time, you just don't see people who live in LA. It's like, it's not really like that easy. And so, anyways, right? It's just not like, you're like, Oh, yeah, I live so close. But you'll probably see the people who live out of LA more often than you see those that live in it. And traffic is real. And, and then when the mastermind ended, I really was a bit bummed that I didn't get to know you more. And so we were luckily paired up on this shoot one day with Girl Squad Inc. And you've I don't know if you know, but I was having a really low day that day, it was just not, not my best day. And I texted Monica I said, my higher self, is like not showing up to the shoot. I'm hoping by the time the makeup and clothes, come on that like I'm as she says, I'm gonna be it. But I just want you to know if I'm a little low. That's what's going on. Anyways, there is no way to be low around you. Because you, you just exude love, joy. And, and I know that it's not. It's not always easy to do those things. But you really show up with that energy. And I couldn't help but like, get into it too. And we got to have dinner together. And you told me about 'I wonder' and how does it get better than this? And so, I want to give you a moment to introduce yourself but I just have to share that because as you listen to this, if you're wondering like, what do I love this woman so much. This is you'll you'll know why because I love her since the day that we sat down and I even have a tattoo on my hand. Because of her, because, because you really made me have a possibility to step higher into myself and more into myself. So thank you for being here. Will, you tell people what happened, who you are, and, and how you got to be so awesome.Joanna Vargas - 08:45Lesley, thank you for that. I really appreciate you saying that. And that, we were able to connect that day because I totally get what you said out of 50 people and then you know what a possibility that you and I connected. And I am a born entrepreneur. I've never gone corporate. I started a business as soon as I was 18 years old. I was always very different. So since I was a very young girl, I was always very aware Lesley, but pretending I wasn't. And really pushing and mutilating myself into this form and structure of what this reality says a woman or person is supposed to be. And I, just always felt like just different and awkward. And, as I've become to realize who I am as an entrepreneur, I've fallen in love with myself and I fall in love with the process and the journey and now, I share it with others because what it is it's truly happiness and it does sound cliche, Lesley, like happiness and how the hell do I get it Joanna like, Okay, I get it. And so, what I love to do is actually break it down for people so it's not a Instagram quote tile, it's not a philosophical "think positive" because some girls, I mean, some days, you know, we don't want to freakin' think positive, I want to punch somebody, you know, throw it out. And like then I feel badly, because I'm not thinking positively right. And then I judge the hell out of myself. So that's, that's where I am right now. And still in the entrepreneurial game. I've owned a dance studio, a Fitness Studio, produce large events. And here's the difference, Lesley, I used to only see myself as that person. And now I see myself - I'm not even sure yet. The question now is, who am I? Where before I thought, that's who I was. And that's it. And I was only defined by what I created in this planet. And now it's like, Who am I today? And that's who I am.Lesley Logan - 10:50I mean, so many things that I resonate with in there and I'm sure others do. But I love that you shared so open and honestly about the Who am I? Because that question, I think is it's kind of a detriment. Like, we're all supposed to know who we are. And I think it's so easy to then just put a label on yourself. Right? Like, I'm just a Pilates instructor when I'm not just Pilates instructor and it's like, I'm just a business coach. Well, not just. And so it's that I feel like it's probably a journey, and I'll learn who I am when I'm looking down at the funeral of people talking about who I was.Joanna Vargas - 11:23I love that Lesley. Oh, my gosh, can I jump into a story because just the other night, I was talking to my boyfriend and I totally actualized him as well, we could talk about that as well. And we were talking about, how he had labeled me already. And it was interesting that we had this awareness that I shared something with him early on in the relationship and that he had unconsciously labeled me, that way. And now he's tiptoeing around me not wanting to say something, because I am this person. And I said, look on, I am going to change every day, every five seconds, every five minutes. So ask me a question. Because when you don't ask me a question, you automatically think I'm that same person. And let me tell you, in a year, in 10 years, when I'm 85 years old, I'm going to be so different. Please don't put me in a box and a label. And what I thought, Lesley, was like, Oh, my gosh, I had this big awareness. I've done this to past relationships, men, women, it doesn't matter. You know, romantic, business-wise, I met them. So let's say, Lesley, I met you. And now I go, she was like this on day one. So now she has to be like that every single day for as long as I know her, rather than allowing, having the allowance for her to grow and I'm growing. So, I do that to others. People do that to me. And I'm like, so they met me at 18. And I'm supposed to be the same person I was when I was 18. And so, I really see that we have these expectations on people on relationships, and it's really been in my world lately.Lesley Logan - 13:03That took me back to this time. I remember, I didn't know a lot about who I was yet because I was in college, but I was going back to my hometown. I'm from a very small hometown, and the girls get pregnant, pretty young and married and that's kind of the thing and I like I got out. I mean, if you don't know where I'm from, there's a town called Lodi. Someone wrote a song about it (Joanna Vargas: Lodi!) about Oh Lord, stuck in Lodi again, I cannot, I cannot get stuck in this town. And and so when I came back, I was just about to graduate college. Actually, I was there for graduation. And I was managing a jewelry store. So like here I am, like not even 21 yet and managing a jewel, a high end accessory store in Orange County at South Coast Plaza. Like, in my little town life. I'm like, I've made itJoanna Vargas - 13:50You made it!Lesley Logan - 13:52I've made it. And I was, I was excited to go this graduation because I was going to see people from high school and I was like, Oh my God when they ask like because I grew up very awkward. I did not feel like I belonged in high school. I'm sure everyone thought I did. And we all think we don't belong, right? But I really didn't feel that, for so many reasons. And so here I am. I've made I can't wait to tell people that like, I'm this big time. jewelry store manager right in, in Orange County. I live by the beach. And I see this girl I met in sixth grade. And she has, she's got two kids. It's been three years and I think she's pregnant with a third. And she said, Oh my gosh, Lesley Logan. I said. Hi, you know, and she goes, "What's going on?" And I said, "Oh, like I'm a jewelry store manager in Orange County. I'm going to this college and I got one more year left and live by the beach. It's so fun." And she's like, "Oh that's it?"Joanna Vargas - 14:46We're so cute.Lesley Logan - 14:48It's so funny because like, the labels we put on people, you might think the label you've even put on yourself is like spectacular and it sucks to somebody. So it's just. And then from that moment on, I was like. Whoa, who? What am I trying to do here? And so that just took me back because it's funny. People put labels on us and we can put labels on people or ourselves and it really doesn't do anyone a good job.Joanna Vargas - 15:13Yes, right in a box. what's right, what's wrong? It's like, it's exhausting. Oh my gosh, that's a great story. It's really cool.Lesley Logan - 15:23I was like, oh, okay, that was like my little, little angel going, "Sit down, girl. You're not there yet. We got things to do." Um, so, I, you know, you say you're a born entrepreneur. And this is something that I think is is really cool because you know, everyone look in the show notes her bio is freaking awesome, inspirational. What what she has done? What, what do I mean? I'm sure people to have these stories. But when they're little kids, and they like sold lemonade, like, what was it that made you want to be an entrepreneur at 18? Did you know what it was?Joanna Vargas - 15:55Yeah, I had already started when I was gosh, six or seven. I used to go to my neighbors' houses and pick their avocados from their trees and put it in my little red radio flyer. And then I would go back to their house Lesley and sell it back to them for like 50 cents. I was just a hustler. I was a little hustler before J Lo was a hustler. And I but I didn't realize what I was doing. I was always creating, Lesley, whatever it was, I was going to create something. Like, oh, I'm gonna sell this. I used to go, we used to go to Mexico, we were a little kid, you know, like, go to TJ and then I begged my mom, and I always I knew how to sell, I could even sell to my Mom. Mom, please buy me these bags of candies, because I'm going to go, and then I'm going to sell them for 25 cents, and I had the whole thing. So I would sell her, then I would go to school and sell them to my friends. And then I would do lemonade stands. But here's the thing, I would always want to out create what I did before. Like, okay, those kids did eliminate standard, what I'm going to do is I'm going to add a lemon wedge, and I'm going to add a straw. I used to do things like that. And I'm and then Lesley, I used to get a smaller cup. And I was doing this not even realizing, how I was out creating what I did yesterday. If I make a smaller cup, I could sell it for five cents, because it's less but I know people are going to tip me and give me a $1. But if I say it's 50 cents, they'll probably give me 50 cents. My brain was already starting to move things around like chess that way. And, and then in high school, I was just always wanting to, to create, that's the best way I can describe it. I wanted to create, I wanted to create, if I wasn't creating, I was bored to death. And when I was bored, Lesley, I would create drama in my life. And I know a lot of us on this planet. As humans, we create drama, because we're bored. But we don't know we're bored. So we'll create stuff, just like stupid stuff. I still do it till today, like my money situations, I'll create drama with my money, just so I'm entertained with my money because my credit cards are here. And this is like what are you doing, Joanna, because you're so bored. Because I can do 10 million things at once. But, I was always taught, Lesley, not to do 10 million things. Focus on one thing, you should do this. And like I said at the beginning, when he asked me I'm like I was always different. I can always do 10 million things. And now I've really fallen in love with that I can do a lot of things and that I can work last minute and that I am a procrastinator, and I do work better when I'm a procrastinator. So what it's what I'm doing, Lesley, is I'm taking reality and I'm flipping it upside down. And it's like, everything is opposite. Everything is opposite. Everything is opposite. Everything is opposite. And let me tell you, when you do that, it Fs with your brain. It really does. It's like brain bombs. Like what, because we're so programmed, that procrastination is bad. And then when you live and go, I'm an amazing procrastinator, and I'm gonna rock the hell out of this. It really messes with your brain. So that's what I've been playing with. I know this is really left field, but I'm not sure if that's where you want to go.Lesley Logan - 19:18No, I love it. I'm loving left field. I'm left handed.Joanna Vargas - 19:23Okay, so let's go there.Lesley Logan - 19:25So but I, here's what I, what I love about this is like, you know, I think we are told something and so if we do it differently, even if it's working, we're questioning if I should be doing it that way we're saying I know I'm not supposed to doing it this way, I'm not supposed to procrastinating and it's like I too procrastinate on purpose very well. Right, like I, I, I find that the I know that I have to do the thing. And the thing is on my mind and because it's on my mind. It's in there and it's percolating. It's coming up with things and then I'm exposing myself to other things. And I'm like, okay, it's due on Tuesday. And I know for a week it's due. But I'm the life I'm living between now. And when it's due, it all affects it. And so, you know, I definitely wouldn't write a 50 page paper the night before I've done that. It's not pleasant. But, um, you know, my team is like the news they want the newsletters due a week before, this is my team, right? My husband and all of them. They're very organized. They're very detailed people. So all the due dates are a week before everything. And I've told them. You will get it two days before, because that's when it's due to me. And so I, I know that it's there. But the difference is like, whether I let the procrastination stress me out or inspire, right, and I think that what you are doing, Joanna, is that you've just been like, I'm gonna question everything I was ever told is wrong. And I'm going to explore how I can make it right. Because I'm different. I'm, I'm Joanna and no one can be me. And so I think that's really cool. If you're listening this, it's, you know, maybe you can only focus on one thing at a time. That's okay. But do it if that's because you know, that, that's what you can do. And not because someone told you that.Joanna Vargas - 21:06Yes. Oh, Lesley, because then we'll use the tools against us. Well, Joanna said procrastination is better. I'm like, no, no. What I, what I would like to say is, I'm saying everything is a question. Everything is choice. Everything is choice. And when we believe that we don't have choice, then we become small. And so I'm not saying that I always procrastinate. I'm saying I ask a question and go, you know what it feels like to procrastinate right now. And even that word feels like icky to me, but it's the best word I can use to describe the energy that I'm trying to say. Right? But really, what it just means is, I just do it when I do it. That's, that's what it really means to me. The word procrastination, I choose to do it, when I want to do it. That's it. It's almost like food. People go, what's your diet? What do you eat? And I'm like, I just eat when I'm hungry. That's it. It's real simple. I just eat, I asked my body what it wants, I eat when I'm hungry. And that's real. It's, it's really that simple. You know, and I'm not judging the hell out of a piece of food. Because there's just so much judgment on this planet. Like everything is a judge-able, judge-able, judge-able thing. We're gonna judge this, this is right. This is wrong. This is black. This is white. This is up. This is down. This is left. This is right. It's like, Oh, my gosh, what if it's all of it. And my word for this year, Lesley, I have my little my intent bracelet is the word "And". I've really been obsessed and like in love with this word. "And" because "and" for me is abundance. I am nice and I'm a bitch. I am beautiful and I could be really ugly. You know, I am so sweet and sometimes I could be a fire breathing dragon, you know, and there's no right or wrong. It's all a choice, Lesley, of what's going to create more for that moment. So here's a little story. A couple days ago, I was having a little quarrel with my boyfriend. And we were communicating and talking about, you know, what just happened. And I asked, "What's going to create more right now?" And the awareness that I got was me throwing a tantrum, was going to create a lot. And I did I threw a tantrum, I was on the phone, I was cursing I was I'm like, I'm pissed off. I'm so, I'm so annoyed. And I'm so bitter, and I threw a magical tantrum. We hung up. And the next day there was so much drama created out of that tantrum. But I could have looked at it and judged it and go. No, Joanna, you should not throw a tantrum, or only two year olds throw tantrums, etc, etc. But there's no right or wrong. There was no judging on it. It was just what's going to create more. And a lot of times we judge things, let's say for example, because of the pandemic right now, we judge the virus. I don't want to get the virus because it's bad. And I wonder if the question is 'what's going to create more right now?' And sometimes I wonder if you got the virus will it create more for you? I've known people that got the virus and they made changes in their life and it actually created more for them. Like the planet, us, having this pandemic has created more for the planet in weird ways and crazy ways, but it's created so much. Do you get what I'm saying? But if we look at it is wrong or right? What can it create? Right?Lesley Logan - 24:22Because you're you're definitely saying like if we look at this tantrum as bad and you shouldn't have a tantrum anymore, you're actually taking away the lessons that you could learn from the tantrum. So maybe, yes, you don't have to have as big of a tantrum next time or the have the tantrum next time. But to judge the tantrum, you discount all that you get from it. And it's true. Like, I mean, there's so much interesting things about I think people really don't, don't often see how things are happening for them. And it is terrible. I hate that at this point of recording this like half a million people have lost their lives to this and, and but because of COVID my entire business has changed in a way that is for me. (Joanna Vargas: Yeah) You know, and, and I think it goes back to what you were saying is choice. Instead of sitting back and going. Oh my gosh, 60% of my business for the year is canceled. I guess I'll just teach virtually still. And I just will wait till this is over. Instead of taking that, and being like, Well, what can I do? Like asking the question I and I, while you're talking about judgment, it made me think like judgment is a period and you are so like a question mark to life. Like, you're always questioning life. And when you judge you put a period on it, and our brains like closed loops, so they will just take that judgment in and they're like, that's it. But you were the one who really reminded me about how amazing open loops are, which is why I have 'I wonder' on my hand, because I, it's so easy for me from the way I was raised. I was not raised by entrepreneurs, no one in my family really is. So having this. Having this open loop, I can think about it. Like, I wonder how I'm going to do this right now. I'm like, Oh, we can't, we can't travel anymore. So nothing we can do for this business is going to happen. Well, what can I do? And it's funny, when you just put that out there, your brain starts thinking about things. But the period on that would have just, I would still be in a 500 square foot apartment. Probably, looking at my laptop, sitting on my bed because we didn't even have a table - there was no room. So I just really love that you. You talk about judgment, and you're and you're seeing the the appreciation and the positivity and the, and the possibilities. And all the things whether they are in air quotes, good or bad. I think that's really cool.Joanna Vargas - 26:38Lesley, I love that way that you said a period. Yeah, it's putting the end to the book. If when you answer something. Because our brains are not that smart, we think they are. But actually, infinite intelligence is way more, has way more possibilities than what our brains can put on. And what our brains do is they put a period, and they conclude. So whenever our brain wants answers, and when we're willing to not have the answer, and to have the awareness because answers and awareness are different. And some people say intuition. And for me, the word awareness is a little more lighter. But awareness is like you knowing. Animals have awareness. Animals are the most aware on this planet. They function from awareness. Like there could be a rabbit and rabbits won't mate if they know that there's going to be, like a drought coming. So they won't mate. Right? They already can feel it. And I wonder as humans, do we have that same awareness that animals have, like in Thailand, remember what the big tsunami back so many years ago, and so many animals went to high ground a day, days before the tsunami? That's awareness. Right?Lesley Logan - 27:59Right. That's insaneJoanna Vargas - 28:00Right. And I'm like saying it right. I mean, that's so cool. I am so intrigued by that. I'm like, Oh, my God, it's amazing. Elephants that had been chained down, you know, in Thailand, they use elephants and for, for fun anyway. But they had left the chains and walked away. Everybody's like, "Where are these animals going?" That's awareness. And I'm like, so the question for me, Lesley, is how much more awareness can I have? And like I said, at the beginning, I'm like, I was always so aware as a young girl, but I was pretending I wasn't. And so that's why I always kind of felt disconnected from this world. Because I was so aware. Like, I always knew stuff. But I'm like, nobody else knows this. I'm the only one. So then I thought I was the weirdo.Lesley Logan - 28:44So I and I love this. I want to go back to this. And because I too, I think I was totally forget thinking I wasn't aware. But it's because it's not, it wasn't cool to be aware. It wasn't cool to stand out. It still isn't cool. I have a client who's I think she's 16 now and, you know, we're talking about something and she said, "Yeah, but you know, the other kids in school don't like that. Whatever it is, and I just want to be the only one out." And I was like, "It's okay to be the only person out and you need to know that I'm not saying this is the time you choose that don't you know, you listen to you, but someone needs to tell you that it's so okay to be the only person who disagrees with something because I wish I had known that I wish I had disagreed more I think I would have I would have learned more from that." That, that tension. And then then I did and just like going with the flow and like pretending I didn't know that I was aware that I had uniqueness around things but a unique way of thinking about things and, and, you know, in business I everybody who's listening is probably thinking, yeah, but someone's already doing that. They might even look at you and I go I want to do it. They're they're already doing it. And it's like actually like, you can do it because you're so unique. Like you can't put that away what you were telling that story about the lemonade. You're like, Okay, well they did that, but I'm gonna have a straw and I'm gonna have a smaller cup, like you're finding unique ways to stand out. And so I just I think that I wish more girls specifically knew that it was okay to, to actually like to be unique.Joanna Vargas - 30:17I love that you said that Lesley, because what came up for me is that the planet, okay? Does not think that way. For example, weeds will grow and they don't go, well, I'm not going to grow because that weed is higher, weeds just grow, or a bird doesn't wake up in the morning and go, well, I don't feel like chirping today cuz that bird is chirping louder, like, the planet doesn't see that. Let's look at Mother Earth, Mother Earth is infinite. If you look, she will just keep growing and growing and growing. And just she will change she will move and change and do whatever she needs to do in order to keep creating. But as humans, we don't do that. Right. And I wonder what else is possible for us as humans to to watch the planet and go wow, like I just look at nature. And I'm like, wow, how can I be more like that tree? And I know that might sound airy fairy? All good. But do they know something? Animals know something? I look at dogs. And I'm like, wow, how can it be more like a dog? Where they're just like, whatever, they have no point of view. And that's why people love them. Right? Okay, but and this is another thing. For my parents that are listening or even, you know, non parents a great question to ask somebody that feels stuck. Like, you know, when you have a girlfriend, you're talking to her whatever, and she's just stuck or your kids are stuck, or your client that's 16 is stuck. A great question is, so what do you know? What do you know about this? And you'll see, like, people's brains are like that. They're like, what do you mean? What do you mean? What do I know? What do you mean? But we're gonna start to uncreate that we don't know. Like, what do you what do you know? I remember the first time I was asked that question, and I was like. What do you mean? My logical brain was so fixated on wanting to, you know, punch that person that was asking me because I didn't know at that moment. I was so logically trained. And I was a very good little girl, even though I was in my 30s, when I was asked this question, but I was still, I'm good. Don't tell me that I know stuff. Because I don't know this. And I need the answer. And I'm paying you to give me the answer. I was very stuck on that. So I get it. And the more that I get curious, I'm like, Yeah, what do I know here? Because, Lesley, I think as we're young children are, we're brought up we're brought up not to know, our parents know everything. We and then we grow up and we're like, our parents don't know everything. I think that's why as teenagers, we get pissed off. Like I was a 12-13 year old brat, I was a horrible brat. And I really look back and I'm like, what was that? Joanna? What was? What was that bratness? And I really think because I thought that my parents knew everything. They were Superman and Superwoman. And then I'm like, oh, they're human. They don't know everything. But they're still telling me what to do. So I didn't know how to how to articulate it. So what I knew to do was to be a rebel back and roll my eyes and give attitude. But it was because I knew that I knew stuff. But everybody's looking at me like I don't. You're a child. You're dumb. Be quiet. Find the answers.Lesley Logan - 33:29Me, I feel like that's one of the definitions of going crazy, like. Right? Like that. Like, I love this observation. I'm sure there's like a child therapist out there going. Ha! We might have just solved all teenage angst.Joanna Vargas - 33:41Oh, oh, yes!Joanna Vargas - 33:43That's simple. I know!Lesley Logan - 33:46But, you know, you're I, I want to go into that word, curiosity, because I do and I remember wanting to make changes happen in my business and pretending like I didn't know and like thinking. Okay, if I just buy this next course, then I'm going learn the thing. And the being so disappointed in the course because I'm like, I did that already. Like I did. And it didn't work.Joanna Vargas - 34:07And it's your fault. And I wasted my money.Lesley Logan - 34:11And, and I'm, and I mean, I remember I was even in a mastermind, and everyone was like, giving me my own advice back on how to make more time and I'm like, Yeah, no, I know that. That's the advice I have in my course. But it's, I can't do that right now. And then I was like, I think I got a super frustrated the fact you know, you get frustrated enough, you're gonna figure it out. Because you're like, I'm so tired of being this frustration. I'm choosing to live in it. So let's figure this out. But I don't know when it was that I was like, I heard 'be more curious' or the word curiosity again, it's not like it goes away, but you kind of just become aware of it. And I'm like, I need to be a little bit more curious. What if I don't know. You know, what if I, what if I, what if I don't like, what if it isn't this answer, what if it's another thing and and using those awareness, like talent. And I remember hearing like, you know, if you can be the thing that you want to be, what would that thing? What would that person do? And I was like, what would I do if I was already where I wanted to be, and making changes, and that is when, I mean, it is not abundance. It wasn't like endless things, but it was enough ideas that my brain didn't know. It's like, oh, look what I do know. Now, look what I do know about that. And I just got stuck on that. And so I really, I really love that you talked about, Joanna, like curiosity, and, and, and coming up with these questions, because I really, I think that we, we pretend people don't know enough. So we tell them, they don't know enough, then they believe that they don't know enough. And then they're stuck. And then they go back to the people who still told them they don't know enough. And so I think as, as, as listeners, like, who do you know, that needs that question? Who do you know in your life that needs to be asked? So what do you know, right now? What do you know? I would I would challenge everyone to go do that. I want to check because I'm in love with something of that you. You did with a friend. Can you tell us about the Remember When?Joanna Vargas - 36:10Yeah, there's this game that I play, I have some girlfriends that know it. And it's called Remember When, and we'll just sit there. And we'll just drink coffee or sometimes just some wine. And we just say remember when and we talk about things in the past as if they've already happened. So last summer, I was sitting at the park with a girlfriend we're like, Hey, remember when you're at my wedding, she's like, Oh my gosh, and we will give details. Remember when I made that toast, and then I fell on my dress and we just start laughing, we will tell the most detailed stories. Oh my gosh, remember when we went to Vegas, and we had that phenomenal bachelorette party. And then we got free food and we didn't have to pay for anything that whole night. And then she'll come in and go. Yeah, remember when we took that helicopter, we will go on and on. Remember when that guy he came and he just spoiled the heck out of me. Another thing we do is we'll send text to each others. And we'll say, why are men so great to me? Why do men treat me like queens? Why do men buy me whatever? Like just on and on? And I'm like, Oh, yeah, why? Why is it? And then the universe will show you why men are so good do or you could say. Why are my clients just given me so much money because of nothing? And then she'll text me? Yeah. Why are they? So we're already thinking and asking a question of true curiosity. And as if it already happened. And so what find somebody out there, then you can play this game with because not everybody will get it right. And the ones that do get it, text message. Have a little session, a little zoom session get together. I really truly, it's so fun and make a game like little kids play Lesley. Right?Lesley Logan - 37:57This is, this is my mind is not the right word. But like, it makes me giddy because I meet so many people, you know, the typical goals. Coaching thing is to like think about your future. 10 years out five years out, and so many people if you're stuck, like I get it, you cannot think out that far. You're like. No, I am not paying the bills today, I cannot think at that point, you don't think big enough. And what I love about this is it's playful. And it's fun. And because of that you're willing to go into those big places that your like your true soul wants to have. And it's going to give you instead of like where you really want to go because jokes are all half truths, right? Or they're like, they're like, you know, so like, that's what's really fun for me. And I mean with technology. What a fun game on Marco Polo, we're like, (Joanna Vargas: Oh yeah!) we're not getting paid for this ad but like, like, I just love, like, you could be on your workday. And instead of having to wait for your friend to actually be free, you could video them and go, Okay, remember when I met the man of my dreams, and now we to get like, and then they can come back? And they and it's just this conversation that keeps on going and what it, what it comes back to the whole asking your brain questions because it's like open loops. We see evidence for what we believe to be true. And thoughts become facts, right? So they become beliefs. And so you're putting out into the universe something that you want to be true. And then you start looking for that evidence. Instead of texting the friend like we all have done like. Oh, why is everyone such a flake to me? And so then you only see flakes?Joanna Vargas - 39:28Yes. Because we want to be right. Let's get real. Everything we will do, Lesley so that we can be right. Just the other day, I went to this chiropractor, and it's a long story. But one of one of the things in order to get to this chiropractor was, I was fighting myself not to go. So what happened was the girl at the front had my email wrong. They messed up the times. I was supposed to be there, like, all these things were happening to make me right. So I didn't have to go, you get what I'm saying. And I was I was that horrible client there. I know they were already talking about me because when I came in, he's a healer, right? And he said, Joanna, you need to let stuff go. He's like, you were already being difficult to book you hear for this, for this appointment. And then everything in my body, Lesley, wanted to defend why I was difficult to book that appointment. And again, because I want it to be right. And it's been bugging me ever since. And I'm like, Joanna, what is that? What is it that you want to be right? What is the lie here? There's a lie here. And the lie is not him. The lie is that I always have to be right. And it doesn't matter what's going to happen regardless, you know? So anyway, we will create stuff like you said, we will find the evidence to make us right. And I was finding evidence not to go to this appointment, even though it was the best thing for me, but I was fighting it. Right. And well, and then because what we want to say, Lesley is, see, I told you, see I told you I was that that guy was a jerk. See, I told you I shouldn't have gotten to that chiropractor, right?Lesley Logan - 41:11Oh my god, I love this story. Because I didn't, I thought of like four different times in my life where I've definitely not wanted to do something and I'm like, "and their Zoom link is wrong. This is wrong. And now they're wasting my time."Joanna Vargas - 41:23I told you!Lesley Logan - 41:26And it's like, and it's so funny. Because if you can take a moment just to like, Okay, I'm here now, like, for whatever reason, this is happening for me? What can I learn from this? When I can have the awareness to do it, I'm always shocked and surprised. And some of my favorite people in life are from like, things that I like, like literally fought like a two year old to not do and I'm like, Oh my god, I'm so embarrassed. I could never tell that.Joanna Vargas - 41:50Isn't that interesting, Lesley? Even this new doctor, he's like, my favorite person now on this planet. But man, it took me a year and a half to book this appointment, Lesley, because I was thinking about it. And then, I was like, going through again, the loop that you said the period it was like, No, no, no, finally, I book it and everything. And it wasn't because I could have used the tools against me, Lesley, I could have said, See, it's not meant to be I shouldn't go right. And we do that to ourselves. Remember, I said let's flip everything upside down. So a lot of times in the metaphysical world in the spiritual world will say, See, it's not meant to be I shouldn't go to this, which I call B.S., where we're creating this, I was creating this drama, not to go because it was more pricey. This is this guy is not cheap, right? So my logical brain was like, how can I get out of this? How can I out create this because I don't really want to spend the money. And that was the truth. That was the lie. The lie I was telling myself was the money part. But I was telling myself that it was about him. And the front desk girl. So that was the lie. And so I wanted to make myself right. Anyway, so that I mean. That's all.Lesley Logan - 42:59There's so many, there's so many things in there that I generally I'm like, Oh my God, we could talk about for hours, because I think it's so funny what we will say when it's just to avoid the truth, which is like, there's probably fear and like, what are you going to find out, you know, but like, I, I try, I try to be very aware of like, the top five fears that are out there. And like I'm like, which one am I, which one am I doing right now because like, you know, like that is on a good day. You know, we all have days where like, I'm leaning into this fear so hard. I'm just gonna enjoy wallowing in it but, um, but it's, it's, it's just something that it's so important that everyone hears this from women like yourself for me, but, but people who are going every day after their dreams, like the honesty about it, but you said something about obstacles. And it's true, I would hear people say, Oh, it's a sign. Like, this is a sign. And I, I want I want to say that I like loved believing in signs. And I do think there are signs but I think we, we look for signs for which we want to see the signs for so you can't you can't believe all the signs you see. Because you are looking for evidence to prove yourself right. And whatever your self is showing up. Like it might be the self that is like, like, like telling you you're not gonna make it and you're like, Oh, look at this sign or like, That thing's not gonna work. I could have seen COVID as the sign that like, like, this isn't gonna work. And instead, like, I just was like, Okay, how is this happening for me? What have I been asking for? I've been asking for time. I've been asking for time. Okay, so next time more specific. I would like more time where the rest of the world doesn't suffer. That would be awesome. So next time I'll be more specific. I would like to have more time and a runway of income. But what did I want to have more time for? Okay, this and so it's so I think obstacles are actually not signed at all. They are, they show me how much I want to fight for something. I'm willing to like, take out that obstacle that I must really want and if I I take the obstacle as Oh, that's it. That's as far as we go. Well then, I didn't want it enough. And like, at least you're finding out now like, good. Like, it's good to know sooner before you like, invest more time into it, right?Joanna Vargas - 45:12Damn, Lesley, this is good. I mean, we're like, whoever's listening right now play this on repeat, because this is good.Lesley Logan - 45:17I feel like we're listening to this myself. And I need to remember.Joanna Vargas - 45:22Yes, yeah. Because we will use the tools against us. I see it all the time. Joanna does feels heavy, so I'm not going to choose it. Just because it feels heavy. Like when it doesn't feel good. Like, no, no. What's the lie here? There's a lie that you're telling yourself a lie. That's the truth? That's a great question. What's the lie here? Now that one's like a whole other question. Because our brains like what do you mean? What's the lie? What's the lie? What's the lie? Don't worry about it. It will show up. You know?Lesley Logan - 45:50Yeah, yeah. Yeah. There's, there's, it's, it's just so it's so good. It's so good. Um, I, I mean, obviously, we can talk for hours. So we'll have to do this again, for many reasons. So if you are listening, you have more questions you want us to take on in life? Let us know, drop it in my comments. And I'll make sure that we, we address it on another talk. Because I mean, we could almost have her own panel. And yes, I'm dreaming up something right now, wouldn't it be cool if we had a panel?Joanna Vargas - 46:21Of conscious conversations? Yeah, like taking things that are out there and just flipping them and making them different? Because I think right now, the conversations we're having our limiting, they're great. And what else can we create? I think they still have a cap right now of most of the conversations that are being created.Lesley Logan - 46:40Yeah, I love that I, before I, before I met, Brad, I was like, in this Limbo of life, I left my ex and I was there was a homeless period, which is not my first time being homeless. So that's a whole other story, but I had some one of my clients paid for me to have like a birth chart reader. And let me tell you, like, part of me was like, You spent how much on this person instead of like, giving me the money? I'm literally living on my credit card. But I went to listen to, I listened to this person tell me, we had an hour and he said, I'm looking at your chart. And I just want you to know you've gone as far as you can by yourself. (Joanna Vargas: Wow.) You cannot there's you you can do things on your own. You are powerful enough to do things on your own. But you will what you what you have achieved to this point. This is, this is the life you will be living if you decide to go things alone. And so he's like, what opportunities do you have to partner up with people? I'm not saying you partner up in business, but what opportunities do you have? And so that's when I like, had a dating blog with a friend. And I had I started doing all these different anything I could partner up and like going to art places like just not going alone, right. And I'm an outgoing introvert, ya'll, so it's like super easy for me to go to things alone. Somebody was listening to a podcast today, but they go well, she's a high functioning introvert. And I'm like, oh, what's an interesting way of putting it! Yes, that's me. Yes, yeah. So So I was like, I took that. And I was like, Okay, so I'm actually limiting myself by not being open and aware. And so, and so I know, I'm on this journey, where I'm meeting these amazing women, someone like you, I can go, Oh, this is why I was supposed to because if I had just tried to do this on my own, I wouldn't have joined a mastermind I wouldn't have partnered, I definitely would not have like, let my husband helped me with my business. Like, no, I can do it alone. And, and it's just so it's important for us to like continue to ask questions, but like, where are we holding ourselves back? What are we doing that limit ourselves? I love you. I love these questions that you have put into our minds today.Joanna Vargas - 48:44Lesley, I got that. Like I heard it right now. Oh, my gosh, I have the goosebumps. I received from what you just said. I heard, Joanna. Oh, my gosh, how can you partner up, you've hit how much you've done by yourself. Oh, my gosh, thank you. I really appreciate that. Because I heard it. Wow.Lesley Logan - 49:03Oh, and now I have chills. And I'm about to cry. So we're gonna do this. Remember when? Remember when we had this amazing women's panel. And we brought all these women together? And we talked about how they could turn things on their heads and find something and where they see a period and actually put a question mark on it?Joanna Vargas - 49:20And Lesley, remember when Oprah reached out to us and she wanted us on her super soul? Now I cried when Oprah reached out that wasn't so much fun.Lesley Logan - 49:30I know because we also to say we're so busy actually. So can we do it on a different day? And Oprah was like, Yeah, I have to move my schedule around for you.Joanna Vargas - 49:39Because Oprah knew we were. That amazing!Lesley Logan - 49:42Oh my gosh. So, Joanna this will not be our last time chatting into the ears of people but where can people find you? Now if they because they're gonna want to like just learn so much from you and absorb as much as they can.Joanna Vargas - 49:55Please follow me on Instagram at I'm at JoannaVargasOfficial and I do free 30 day challenges and I go live every day. And Lesley, I'm going live every day for the full year. And every month is a different challenge. And I really got the awareness because one of the questions was, what can I create this year? What can I do? And I got the awareness too. In order for me to shift, Lesley, I got to do this for a full year. Like, like how you just said, you're limiting yourself by doing it by yourself. What I received was Joanna, you're limiting yourself by doing it for a month. If you do it for a year. This is gonna, this is gonna stretch the hell out of you.Lesley Logan - 50:35Okay, I, I can't wait. I, I see. Because here's the thing. I'm on my phone in the morning when you go live.Joanna Vargas - 50:41Do you see? Joanna's live and like, there she is again!Lesley Logan - 50:45I say it, that the day 26 journal is and this is me. I'm like, I'm gonna wait till the next one. I want to start at the beginning, which is so dumb. So tomorrow, I'm just gonna start with you. And to everybody listening. I want to acknowledge you for having a new possibility, like something shifted in our conversation today. And I want to acknowledge us for that.Lesley Logan - 51:54I know. I know. If there's something really big about to happen. (Joanna Vargas: Yeah) Another big thing for us. Yeah. (Joanna Vargas: Yeah). Thank you for saying that. While the July 1988 cover goes hard for American-flag style (...and, okay, so does Sassy Club), the rest of the fashion in this issue is not overly patriotic. We're going to Arizona -- or somewhere very dry and hot -- for a swimwear spread. We're in an old-timey cottage for some undergarment looks. And then: stripes. So many stripes. We're also learning about hot-weather hair help, products from the beauty closet the Sassy staff swears by, how to look like a skateboarder (and possibly get called a poser in the process), and so much more. Stick some American-flag toothpicks in your hair -- or don't -- and join us! Visual Aids

Orange County Real Estate Podcast with Alex Yu

I’m sharing the top five reasons to love Costa Mesa.   I’m excited to share the five main reasons I love Costa Mesa, California, one of the many areas I service here in Orange County. It has much more than wonderful weather and the yearly Orange County Fair (though those are great too). 1. City of the Arts. Costa Mesa is known as the “City of the Arts.” The Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts not only includes a 3,000 person opera-style hall for Broadway musicals, but also a 2,000-person concert hall that brings shows and music to the city. It’s an excellent venue to enjoy the very best of Costa Mesa musical arts. 2. Conveniently located. The city has the 405 freeway, 55 freeway, and the 73 toll road. Unlike New York, San Francisco, and London, here, we need a car to get around. However, no matter where you’re trying to go, Costa Mesa has convenient roads to get you there. 3. Close to all the beaches. As a kid, the beach was too far away from where I lived, but in Costa Mesa, no matter where you are, you’re about five miles away from a beach. If you’re looking for sand and waves, they have beautiful Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.  4. The South Coast Plaza. This is the largest shopping mall on the West Coast. Originally, it began as a lima bean field. The first department stores were Robinsons-May and Bullock’s. Every year, 24 million people shop and dine in the plaza. It’s a fantastic place for retail therapy! 5. Amazing restaurants and bars. “Mesa” means “table” in Spanish. You could eat at a different restaurant every day of the year and still not have tried everything. There are also plenty of gyms and yoga studios to burn off the delicious calories.  I would love to hear the reasons you love Costa Mesa and what some of your favorite places are. Please comment below! If you’re considering moving to this exceptional city, call or email us; we love helping people find their place here. Also, contact us if you have any questions about real estate. We would be happy to help you.

Star Wars fan I strongly recommend a really good Star Wars content and then yeah December 20th. We'll see it's kind of a Bittersweet classic but have to report on spoiler-free report on the shows that we do after that. Jason: [2:04] I will mark my calendar to listen to that one. Scot: [2:07] Well folks we are in the meat holiday 19 as mentioned coming to you live on Cyber Monday and wanted to give you a cyber five holiday 2019. As we mentioned on the show there 60 or days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year so in a way everyone these days is really Amplified and much more important than usual so first want to set the table we did a new show that I'm sure you all listen to but just to refresh your memory when you kind of boiled all the different forecast online offline what not. The one I cared most about showed e-commerce coming out in the mid-teens for Holiday 19th that was kind of the pontification around the Halloween time frame for 4 we're going to see the shirt, we have been busy here at Jason Scott podcast headquarters Gathering all the data and are going to summarize it in this hot take, Jason you've been studying the Adobe data and we are going to have Adobe on the show later to go into this more detail but they walk us through what they reported so far. Jason: [3:13] Yep. So I would say it's but good news bad news from the Adobe data all the days are up pretty significantly but they're all down slightly from adobe's forecast so there it is supreme their forecast was slightly over Rosie and the the rate of growth is probably swelling so for Thanksgiving but that man was sales were up 22% which came in at 4.2 billion up sales in the US against the forecast at 4.4 billion so off the forecast a little bit but up a healthy number of Pap you know more than the traditional amount of e-commerce growth and of course Thanksgiving has been a particularly rapidly growing. Day in the old days people didn't shop on Thanksgiving Salina shop online on Thanksgiving and increasingly as shopping is gone the mobile you know where we're all shopping on the dinner table and Thanksgiving so that that day is growing faster is now pretty big black Friday. [4:18] You know it continues to be the biggest day for offline shopping online growth according to Dobie was only 14.5% so. You know not not. Super impressive growth I mean, in line with the the typical average growth we see for the whole year and again slightly under adobe's forecast of 7.4 billion and sales on Black Friday against a 7.5 billion forecast. The year we are seeing a significant shift to mobile. And that the rate of mobile growth is much bigger so I cracked Black Friday 4. Adobe I mean there's going to be some other data that can put you this a little bit later but Prado be on Black Friday 39% of all sales 61% of all traffic. I was on mobile and I would say those numbers are in line with the individual data I've seen from clients the majority of traffic is on mobile but. But still mobile underperforms as a conversion in the aov form factor. And then Saturday was up 19.6% Sunday was up 18% and we don't have the final numbers from Monday because it's still going on in a lot of us every Monday shopping happens. [5:41] At night as we're recording this but they're you know what the forecast is for 9.4 billion and it sounds like people you know still think it's going to be in that. 9.2 to 9.4 billion which is a pretty healthy bump over last year which was actually 7.8 billion so where. We are simply not going until we're jumping over a billion dollars in sales just on on Cyber Monday so for Adobe that's going to put you just under Thirty billion dollars for the cyber5 29 billion for the. For the whole deal. And that was pretty much how Adobe saw anything you saw in the Adobe data Scott. Scot: [6:26] Yeah. I saw a lot of wall streeters kind of summarize the data and I saw some people kind of. I would call a sounding alarm Bells but they're starting to say there's some concern that it was a little squishy I would say so especially this slowing so last year. [6:44] Thanksgiving and Black Friday rough by 29% year-over-year and to kind of go to almost half of that at 14 and a half people felt like you got it feels like we're really slow down your ear specialist pure days now the Counterpoint to that is baby people did start shopping earlier and Sibley was the first things that I want to talk to the folks about cuz I think they also reported Veterans Day was up something like 40% so and that goes what is that that's double singles Day this year right Stars 11:11 so you know so one scenario is it song these days are so important that you know that the problem is that the shape of the holiday just refused to change it go forward more and more I have anecdotally see more people talking about I should cut my holiday shopping done it's only the 2nd of December lot of that going on. These guys have started rolling out their head like a November month of black Friday's or something like that it's everyone's definitely going earlier so I got to get this kind of changing the shape of the holiday but we'll have to see what the data bears. [8:00] The, the taking it to the brick-and-mortar world there's a couple folks that track traffic Jason I know you feel strongly about this exceeded these things maybe not being, the best fits it is kind of probably directional I would say and so shoppertrak is one of those and they said by their calculations store foot traffic was down 3%. Over the whole holiday. So far that's kind of the Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday but on Thanksgiving it was up 2.3% so this kind of Mia Black Friday movie did Thanksgiving Trend continues I did notice that this was the first time Best Buy has been open for. [8:44] Thanksgiving so they kind of jumped into The Fray but then Black Friday ring shoppertrak the foot traffic was down 6.3%, that sounds most cataclysmic to me as a. Oh my guy because I count on that foot traffic for Black Friday so it's kind of, the piece that together with Adobe data it starts to feel like maybe the physical stores are not really going to come out of this very well lefse one more data point is from retail next and they had Black Friday Also down there wasn't theirs wasn't as severe they said the traffic was down 2.1% people bought a little bit more of the sales were only down 1.6% banana same time they said the transaction value was down 6.7% that didn't make any sense I had to read it like six times I don't know how the Ultra Works in that particular statement but I'll let our listeners try to pursue that if they can they can make more sense than I could. Jason: [9:42] Yeah I think what it amounts to is sales as in sales conversion you bought or didn't buy and Transit. Scot: [9:49] Okay so it's like unit unit sales. Jason: [9:50] The dollar value yeah yes I think it is conversion in aov. Yeah I think those are both totally valid data sources those are both companies that sell Hardware that measure traffic in stores and so that the only grain of salt to take with their data is it skewed towards the particular, set of retailers that each of them has sold two and you know they disproportionately he happened to both sell two big boxes and Mall retailers right and so, you know it's, that that's a a significant portion of of the retail space but obviously you know we know we know malls are down in general and you know as I think it was traded in both their datasets more stores are open on Thanksgiving so there was more overall traffic on Thanksgiving and that took a bite out of Black Friday but I do agree with you. Like the bigger Trend that's more concerning as overall for the for the turkey 5, days you know trap traffic's down in that that is a big concern for ticket when there's a bunch of retailers that are already in a distress situation. Scot: [11:01] Yeah nfm United State assets bisacky the neuro datapoint can really screw things like an online a lot of them don't have Amazon data and that's like half right so that's going to be don't have that day to 30% that's going to cost you everything south of where I came in so I'm left thinking you know between these these guys when I go to the mall the store that's the busiest Apple Store I doubt apples using these things maybe they are I don't know he didn't have Apple Store that seems to be like the number one destination in every Mall I've been in the last 2 years so I'll meet you at you'll get this really die of you the world that may not be true. Jason: [11:45] Yep yeah in retail that you know that the mall winds tend to be more specialty apparel and anchor store in so you know we know those are. Two unhealthy parts of the the return echo system. [11:58] But I did also see that the sales force has a bunch of their data out. In that that also was interesting. [12:11] The date their numbers did not completely jive with the Adobe numbers you want again same same conversation we just had. Salesforce data comes from all the people using Salesforce Commerce Cloud which was formerly demandware demandware was originally really targeted and apparel retailers so it's it's Broad and since then but you know I think if we look at the bulk of their. Their user base it's going to be I'll call him upper mid-tier retailers so it's not going to be the very biggest retailers cuz it's a. Clouds a solution with a rev-share component. I'm sold your shoes you probably wouldn't use them but they tend to be kind of enterprise-class customers and they tend to skewed towards retail and so that apparel so you know that's going to buy stared at a little bit but they had Black Friday up 13% which again is another bad number and kind of matches the. The Adobe one in general they had that was 7.2 billion I think which is up 14%, a interesting thing that they only gave us by Friday data but they also had some interesting discounting data and they said that they saw their customers. [13:30] On average of sales were discounted 28% this year versus 27% last year last year we talked about it being a pretty heavy promotional year and it actually, had a pretty significant negative impact on margins and you don't gets feeling like that. True again this year what jumped out at me though is they also said that 56% of all the sales on Black Friday were happened on mobile phones which is. Considerably higher percentage than what a w said and. You know I'd be surprised if overall for all of retail that the numbers really that high but but interesting to see that that's that's what's happening in their segment. What did you think about that Scott. Scot: [14:18] Yeah it feels like mobile the mobile results are kind of all over the place so so, that point was from the shop Friday then we can have a discussion about it Absol Shopify is done something fun to have a visualization like this and then it didn't seem to be that cool. What's the horoscope I don't have a handy or I will put it in the show notes but you know it's just a spinning globe you can see line shooting all over and then occasionally it'll say a customer just bought an order you know that's going to go 50 miles or something like that and then it says. Check out or something like that just feels like. Just not enough information to really be useful but then so that that was kind of a little bit of a disappointment but they did announce that for Holiday they're seeing sales up 40% year-over-year, cross 6.1 million Shoppers and then they said Black Friday was up 49% year-over-year. Whether they said 69% of their sales were mobile that felt like super high because for the longest time you know traffic has been north of 50 for a while but sales ad in south of 50 on mobile but we're saying mobile. [15:44] Tablet covers around the desktop category or even separate or is it really just one product detail page we've ever been on Facebook and seen an ad where you can kind of see an ugly sweater that's interesting to you or a cat. Bug or something like that. A lot of those are just Shopify one product page stores I could lyrics you mind into a check out so I could see that mobile number being there saying that I thought was true about their data, having a. Of 10 years reproduce this kind of data at child eyes or nose bleed kind of stop doing that but you have to be careful because you can give this. [16:33] You have this discussion of not clean view of the data because they don't report same-store sales that's really important because he's growing. Merchants so they say they're hot is up 40% over this really closely and I think I'm saying their entire holiday is up 40% with that doesn't really tell you is what are the Saints for sale so they added 50% more Merchants then actually there's things for sale would have to be down because they're adding always merchants and yet your bratty more Merchants than their stomachs true that it's kind of not very helpful to have that number without the seeds for sale on it so hopefully this is our first year doing this will put them through some of this give us a little bit more data that this kind of meteor. Jason: [17:20] Yeah I had the same impression and I equally I was excited when they announced this holiday Port the real-time holiday dashboard and yeah it ended up just being an order for me a minute speedometer really which isn't isn't that interesting a bunch of these companies in the past have had these really interesting real-time dashboards but for the most part Benders and moved away from those so I'd say we have fewer datasets and for sure of the days since we have one that gets quoted the most is Adobe and that's probably with good reason not only do they have a a good chunk of e-commerce but they also do the rigorous math to state same-store sales so the one downside of that is you actually can't come when they talk about this year vs last year if you actually go to last year and see what their last year was it's not the same as what they're talking about. Now because they're comparing their current customer sales this year vs last year not their customers last year at that. Could be more confusing to make any more sense but they they do the math right to make sure it's true apples-to-apples. Set of retailers with their data this year in their data last year. Scot: [18:35] How about did you see in any interesting out of this. Jason: [18:39] Yep so this is always the sad part to report but usually there are some stumbles over this holiday as you know these sites get hit with. You know dramatically higher traffic than they're used to and that tends to. Put some stress on things and we usually have one or two notable outages and unfortunately this year was no exception the one that I saw to get the most buzzed was Costco. So they even really had them put a lot of focus on digital until very recently the kind of almost. Begrudgingly did digital and you know they're their Executives used to talk about why would we ever encourage people not to come to the store and stuff like that so they they really only have done serious about digital last year so like you don't frankly they're less digital immature or then some other retailers and not shocking that an outage I haven't seen any. Any sort of recap as to why they had the outage sometimes we get it sometimes we don't Nordstrom Rack also has an outage which, tell me a little more surprising cuz this has been a big day for Nordstrom for a long time and I did see something funny that I just had to add add to the list brick-and-mortar retailers are not immune to outages either so one of the very biggest shopping malls on the west coast is South Coast Plaza in Orange County and they actually had a power outage at 2 p.m. and all the stores have to close for several hours cuz they they couldn't use their point of sale systems. Scot: [20:05] Does that do to those rolling around house to have enough there cuz it's kind of random. Jason: [20:10] Yeah I don't I kind of doubt it so if they are having rolling power outages but if they did that to her to like this huge shopping mall on Cyber on Black Friday that would probably be. Some, Sirius Revolt so I suspect this was an unplanned thing and it sounds like it was just localized to South Coast Plaza so so probably some some issue with their infrastructure I was actually at the on Thanksgiving day I was at the Lions Bears football game in Detroit and we had a power outage during the halftime show so the the music got interrupted. Yes it happens Super Bowl went black one year. Yeah so what is that investors think of all this. Scot: [20:57] Yes it was a Wall Street is largely kind of going through a lot of the day that we have one of the more interesting reports is out of Goldman Sachs or they have a retail analyst and what they do is they come up with the basket of holiday items and they do it in two categories take the track consumer electronics and toys and then they did really come up with this round Halloween the track it through Tyler holiday and it was interesting there is on the electronic side they also look at selection and Amazon is kind of dominated there where they have the most of this basket of goods that are in stock I'm so a lot of people sell out very quickly and see see this with the. Targets in the Walmart especially and I think that maybe cuz he's in that store kind of inventory as a backstop more than the hook on it. [21:44] But you know what else I noticed is Amazon's prices crept up and the Amazon was the cheapest at so the index is at 1 so it's so if you add up this basket of goods that's one on average below the average about that you're working so Amazon was a full 1% lower than everyone else in Best Buy was the most expensive then the week that kind of ended with Cyber Monday Amazon was up 1.6% so. [22:24] Walmart with the most expensive at 2% off the decks at Best Buy a discounted about 3% that's kind of simple average but then when you wait it by the more expensive items having more weight in the whole thing kind of price-weighted approached Amazon was the most expensive are around Cyber Monday at 3.1% that's on consumer electronics and then if you go and look at toys then, your Amazon was by far the most toys by a factor of about 3% so you're kind of the read that I got from this pricing data was that the Amazon was really, Cushing to win the Toy War this year in a consumer electronics maybe they're right kind of margin preservation that was my take on some of that interesting ice basket of goods kind of price now it's. Jason: [23:21] Yep and that is going to be interesting because it is that's the price that all the stuff gets sold at is in many ways more important than the, total revenue number in the in the final analysis and how successful holiday was so that's going to be an important thing to track it is tricky because there's so many. Different different ways to sort of track pricing data and it's just not possible to to perfectly know what every retailers doing on price. Scot: [23:50] That's better so you know just kind of land the plane in c e that's a 5% Delta Amazon margin was effectively 5% higher the Best Buy's which is really material into termite. Jason: [24:03] Another interesting data set is this company called Edison Edison Trends is the name of the company and they are another one of these companies that get a large panel of consumers to give them access to their emails and then they scan for e-receipts and they report you know various e-commerce Trends based on the e-receipts that they see in so they actually publishing data specifically for Thursday and Friday that showed up from there their View, have individual retailers did and so they had like the big Winners that grew a lot as Nordstrom Walmart and Amazon they showed Nordstrom is the. Fastest griller with 60% higher sales and last year Walmart at 53% irr in Amazon at 49% higher and they show Target JCPenney and eBay is the big losers with Target down 12% JCPenney down 14% in eBay down 17%. [25:17] So that it that's an interesting data set I hate to say it but like you need to take all these receipt data sets with a slight grain of salt number one the big, retailers are constantly trying to obfuscate the receipt so that these companies can't scan their sales so it's a constant arms race and you know I do Tennessee some like crazy anomalies in this data and Yuna frankly it just can't be true that Walmart and Amazon are both up over 50% and the. Average for the day is only up up 17% like that would have sent you mean every other retailer on the planet is way down because Amazon and Walmart are such a big. [26:02] Chunk of all all e-commerce sales but directionally if those are the retailers that are winning and there's a retailers that are losing that is believable and particularly of you if you look at it through the lens of discounting you know you think about a retailer like Nordstrom traditionally they didn't like to Discount a lot and they had one big sale a year then maybe you know did a little activity around Cyber Monday but it wasn't a huge promotional holiday and this year Nordstrom is super promotional that a lot of deals on merchandise and then there they're literally giving you money to shop so you can spend $400 on discounted merchandise on Nordstrom and I'll give you $100 back so. So they're really aggressively trying to buy customers per your day that we saw that Walmart and Amazon a really aggressive on price. And like it so I haven't seen a conclusive data but to me it's at least viable, the target is intentionally being less promotional than some of those other retailers this year in particular you think. [27:02] A pretty big chunk of Target sales are exclusive merchandise. There there's less reason to be promotional on that so you might see you know Target for going a little bit of. Top line revenue by not being so promotional but maybe they'll end up being a little more profitable than some of these other retailer. So you don't I'm going to tell him that but but as I sit here on Cyber Monday I'd say rate of growth slowing. Aggressive discounting continuing there's going to be a lot of stress on profitability and. And that you know the big strong retailers are disproportionately winning which means the distress retailers. You know are going to be really distressed coming out of this holiday. Which is you know none for an unfortunate reality. Scot: [27:51] Seems like the other big trend is mobile heading to 60% of sales not to strap. Jason: [27:56] Yeah yeah and I do I mean I think the mobile Gap we talked about a lot it's still a real thing but I do I do believe it's narrowing and it Narrows more on these big event holidays than a minute it's likely to for the. Traditional shopping throughout the year as well so not shocking to see mobile index higher on these big sale days then then it would ordinarily. So that is pretty much are. Quick take recap as we're still waiting for final data to come in on Cyber Monday but we hope you enjoy this sort of real-time look, I am you do have any questions or comments we would certainly enjoy hearing about them on our Twitter feed or on our Facebook page and of course if this hot takes been valuable to you we sure would appreciate it if you'd go to iTunes and give us that five star review. Scot: [28:49] Big Sur when we hope your holiday sales are up over 100%. Jason: [28:54] And until next time happy commercing.
