Phone Jerks - "!Christmas on the Floor!," a 2020 self-released single. This week, we are continuing a long-held tradition of featuring Christmas-themed songs selected by Brian Foss, host of KEXP's punk show Sonic Reducer. Brian has been doing a punk rock Christmas special every year since 2004 and has been a Christmas Day on-air DJ since 2012. He will be hosting his non-traditional Christmas broadcast from noon to 6pm on Saturday, December 25th and then will be back on air later that night for Punk Rock Xmess 2021 at 9pm. No standards are played, only original X-Mess songs, most with a humorous bent. For a time of year where alcohol consumption is typically at its heaviest, we certainly don't have enough Christmas songs about drinking. Well, Phone Jerks are here to rectify that. Last year, the Canadian quartet released their submission to the holiday drinking song canon with “!Christmas On the Floor!” The energetic garage rock tune harkens the familiar tale of a lover leaving you during the holidays but then paints a very vivid picture of the unhealthy coping mechanisms one might employ during those trying times.  “The fairy lights remind me I'm the saddest ever been,” laments one of the band's three lead singers (I'm guessing Emily). “I tripped over Baby Jesus, broke the Nativity scene/ My glass keeps on refilling but I just don't know who poured/ Looks like I'll be spending another Christmas on the floor.”  While based in Canada, the Phone Jerks has a member who use to live in Seattle - Brian LaManna, who was in the alternative punk band The Valentine Killers. Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? On episode 24, of My American Meltingpot, we’re talking all about Christmas. More specifically, we’re going to be interrogating the idea that Christmas is for white people! Now, I’m not white and I’ve been celebrating Christmas with my very Black family for more than 40 years, so clearly Christmas isn’t by definition a White People’s holiday, but there are plenty of people of color in America who do not deck the halls or jingle any bells on December 25th. On this episode we try to get to the bottom of why some people of color don’t feel like Christmas is their holiday, even if they are Christians. We also explore the immigrant experience with Christmas, the actual multicultural origins of Christmas, and some ethnic alternatives to a "white" Christmas. Joining me for this racial rehash of Christmas is Dr. Marc Lamont Hill. Dr. Hill is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. He is the author of several books, including Nobody; Gentrifier; and Beats, Rhymes and Classroom Life. A public intellectual and an award-winning journalist, Dr. Hill has received numerous prestigious awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Most recently Dr. Hill opened a bookstore and a community based education center in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.  This episode will have you rethinking the reason for the season in a totally Meltingpot way! They followed the directions and found in Bethlehem what they were looking for. Jesus. The Savior. In Jesus we will discover three things we need and always wanted: Forgiveness, Peace of Mind, and Eternal Life.

How are you going to prepare for Christmas? On this podcast for the first week of Advent, we reflect on this time that we are given to prepare for that central moment in history when God took on our flesh and began to walk among us. Above all, it is a time to ready ourselves for our eventual meeting with the very person whom we are awaiting and trying to imitate, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Advent, therefore, is a time for conversion. We should not be content with mere tweaking—a few small adjustments that really don’t make much of a difference in our resemblance to Jesus. Instead, we should aim for the stars seeking the kind of conversion that the Holy Spirit longs to bring about in our souls so that we can become what he wants us to become. We want a conversion that reaches every aspect of our being. Our Lord tells us: “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps 46:11). During Advent we should foster a spirit of concentration, which is the capacity to focus on what is truly important and to turn a blind eye on the non-essential. “Lord of all the different things dancing in my head or perhaps weighing down on me, which of those things are important to you and which of those things have zero importance?” We should ask the Lord to liberate us from the fear of missing out (FOMO) and from the fear of a better option (FOBO). We ask him to liberate us from the slightest tendency to drift into these two enemies of concentration and contemplation. “Lord, I solemnly declare that I am convinced that the very best option is to spend time with you every day.” There is a final element that can help us in our quest for conversion in the coming weeks and that is contrition. Contrition awakens us to a keen consciousness of the things that ultimately matter: the importance of our earthly life for our eternal destiny. Contrition is such a beautiful act in which we say to God, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I let you down. I’m sorry that I did not focus on the things that really mean a lot to you.” Through intercession of Our Mother Mary, we ask for growth in the contemplative spirit so that we decide freely and lovingly to find the Lord in everything we do and to allow us to see everything from God’s point of view. _____________________________________________________________ THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
