In the late 1830s, the owner of Mammoth Cave hoped to attract more tourists to the area. One of the key figures in making that happen was a slave named Stephen Bishop. Stephen became one of the most popular guides in the caves history, as well as a brave and savvy explorer, responsible for the expansion of the cave system with his discovery of several 'new' areas like the Bottomless Pit and Ruins of Karnak. It was stipulated in his owners will that Stephen was to be emancipated seven years after the owners death, and he was finally free in 1856, but unfortunately his story does not have a happy ending. There is so much more to be said about the role of slaves related to the early exploration and management of Mammoth Cave than what's covered in this episode. Rumer Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson It had been too long, too many years, since I'd last seen Rumer, whom I first heard about through our mutual friend, the late, J Marshall Craig a decade ago. As soon as I had my first taste I became obsessed with her and made it my quest to have her sing in my living room. I saw her perform at a benefit concert for Jeff Jones about 10 yrs ago and vowed to make it happen. A great friend and collaborator of the late, beloved PF Sloan, Rumer oft lived across the country and abroad, I met her at last at PF's memorial 9 yrs ago, just after he'd performed in the living room. Rumer and I became fast friends and I've listened to her in heavy rotation almost non-stop since. We came thisclose to her appearing at Women Who Write in 2016, and it's taken all this time to get her on Game Changers… good things come to those who wait. We went deep today, fittingly on 9/11. First, into Rumer's past. Her humble beginnings, at the time, one of seven siblings. A secret revealed long ago, which led to unwarranted shame, and an ongoing almost unfathomable generosity. The origin of her name, another sweet, and loving familiar story. Adele, the 16-year-old down the street who had the record deal that Sara sought, La Honda, her early band, the years, the hard work, finding the right producer and manager, and grit determination that finally paid off. Her platinum debut album, Seasons of My Soul, which garnered her numerous Brit and MOJO Award nominations and a couple of wins. Performing in the UK with Dionne Warwick and meeting her musical director, Rob Shirakbari, who would become Rumer's partner in music and life, Elton John became enamored of her talent, an oh-so-sweet story there! Touring brought her to the United States, where she began a long ongoing collaborative relationship with Burt Bacharach, to the White House to sing for the Obamas, to Jimmy Webb to sing his P.F. Sloan, and ultimately to sing it with the man himself, so important to this day as we ready to vote, to Daryl Hall and his Daryl House, great story about that, an email from Richard Carpenter, after being likened to his sister for years, a series of albums, motherhood, moving to Arkansas, a visit back to LA, where last we met, first giggling like girls in my car and then at a party at Stephen Bishop's, her Nashville Tears, then back to the UK. where she, husband Rob, and son, Denny, currently reside, and where Rumer will be performing her now Triple Platinum, Seasons of My Soul, to a Sold Out crowd, and soon, a new album, with her 9/11 song, will drop. Rumer shared her September 11th story, and I, mine. I'm so grateful to have had this reunion with Rumer, a treasured friend, and an artist I adore to my core, who gives me goosebumps every time I hear her sing. Her Slow remains in my top 5 of all time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvYUfwMBCrU. Her duet of I Can't Go For That with Daryl Hall is unforgettable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzr6mvDar30 as is her cover of his Sara Smile - that her first given name is Sara, just makes it that much sweeter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh7y--Mc7kk. Rumer has the voice of an angel and the soul of one. Art Garfunkel makes his third appearance on Saturday Night Live, this time as HOST! That is not to say he does not provide A LOT of musical performances. And yet...there actually is a musical guest as Stephen Bishop is thrown a bone and allowed to sing one number. To be fair....he does get an amazing set!The former Paul Simon BFF does an admirable job fulfilling his host duties and one of our biggest critiques is that we could have used him in MORE sketches. We also get what is regarded as one of the best and most well-known "Schiller's Reel." Michael Streeter, author of "Nothing Lost Forever: The Films of Tom Schiller," joins us to help us dive into that and the episode as a whole.Subscribe today! Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Jim Wilson, Award Winning Composer, Pianist & Recording Artist, Author, “Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man” About Harvey's guest:Today's special guest, Jim Wilson, is a multi-award winning composer, pianist, concert and recording artist who has just released a fascinating, entertaining and insightful memoir entitled, “Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man: Behind the Scenes with Music Legends and Finding the Artist Within”. As a young man, he moved from his home in Texas to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a songwriter, musician and performer. But his ambitions took a major detour when his sideline job as a piano tuner blossomed into a hugely successful career as a piano technician for some of the greatest music artists of our generation, including Burt Bacharach, Elton John, Phil Collins, Quincy Jones, Bruce Springsteen, Carole King, Paul McCartney, Lionel Richie, David Foster, Dan Fogelberg – and believe me, I'm just scratching the surface. Our guest got to know many of his legendary clients very well, and through his book, we get an up-close-and-personal glimpse into their lives off-stage. Following the sudden death of a dear friend, and with the encouragement of music superstar Dan Fogelberg, our guest made the life-altering decision to confront his insecurities and anxieties, emerge from the sidelines and follow his dreams and step into the limelight as a music artist in his own right. And what a career he's had. He played keyboards, served as music director, and was frequently the opening act on tour for Stephen Bishop for 16 years. He's recorded 10 piano-featured instrumental albums, 4 of which have hit the Billboard Top 20: “Northern Seascapes”, “Cape of Good Hope”, “Remembrance” and his beautiful tribute album to the late Dan Fogelberg, entitled, “Leader of the Band”. Some of my other favourite albums are “My First Christmas With You”, “Playing Favourites”, and “My Mother's Son”. Our guest has had 2 PBS specials: “Cape of Good Hope and Other Musical Portraits”, and “Jim Wilson: A Place in my Heart”. And his music has been streamed close to 80 million times by fans around the world. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and he was recently made a “Lifetime Member” of the Recording Academy. This episode features a series of voice messages from Jenny in New York. She used our leave us a voicemail button and strung together some interesting experiences she had while camping in the Mammoth Cave area of Kentucky. You can be a part of the show by leaving us your message by using the button right here in the show notes.Mammoth Cave, located in south-central Kentucky, is a world-renowned natural wonder and a significant historical and cultural site. It is the longest known cave system in the world, with over 400 miles of explored passageways. The cave is a part of the Mammoth Cave National Park, which was established in 1941 and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.The history of Mammoth Cave dates back thousands of years. Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee, and others, have long recognized the cave's significance. They used it for various purposes, such as shelter, burial grounds, and ceremonial rituals. Evidence of their presence, including artifacts and drawings, has been discovered within the cave.European settlers began exploring Mammoth Cave in the late 18th century. In 1809, a slave named Stephen Bishop became one of the first guides to extensively explore and map the cave. Bishop's knowledge and expertise were instrumental in uncovering many of the cave's secrets. During the 19th century, Mammoth Cave gained popularity as a tourist attraction. Visitors from all over the world flocked to the area to witness the awe-inspiring natural formations and learn about the cave's history. The cave's unique geological features, such as stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers, continue to captivate visitors to this day. While Mammoth Cave is primarily known for its geological wonders, it has also been the site of numerous Sasquatch encounters. Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, is a legendary creature believed to inhabit remote wilderness areas. There have been several documented sightings and encounters with Sasquatch in the Mammoth Cave area.Witnesses have reported seeing large, hairy creatures roaming the forested areas surrounding the cave. These sightings often occur in the early morning or late evening when the area is less crowded. Some witnesses have described hearing strange vocalizations or experiencing an eerie sense of being watched.Purchase Brian's Book Sasquatch Unleashed: The Truth Behind The LegendBackwoods Horror Stories On YouTubeBackwoods Horror Stories On Apple PodcastsBackwoods Horror Stories On SpotifyJoin Patreon Support The ShowLeave Us A VoicemailSupport Our SponsorsVisit Hangar1 PublishingJoin The Sasquatch Odyssey Fans GroupFollow Sasquatch Odyssey On Instagram Sasquatch Odyssey YouTube ChannelVisit Our WebsiteParanormal World Productions Merchandise Store Support The Showhttps://www.patreon.com/paranormalworldproductionsAll The Socials And Stuff/Contact Brianhttps://linktr.ee/ParanormalWorldProductionsbrian@paranormalworldproductions.com Send Brian A Voicemail Or Tell Your Storyhttps://www.speakpipe.com/SasquatchOdysseyPodcastFollow The Show On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sasquatchodyssey/Follow The Show On TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@sasquatchodysseypodcast?_t=8XRHQxPMFYo&_r=1

The Nightfly is the debut solo album from Donald Fagen. Fagen and his Steely Dan partner Walter Becker had released the Gaucho album in late 1980, and Becker was having a lot of trouble. His girlfriend died of a drug overdose in their apartment, and he was sued for several million dollars. Shortly after that he was hit by a taxi, which shattered his leg. Steely Dan disbanded in 1981, and Becker moved to Maui. Fagen wanted “The Nightfly” to be autobiographical, and without the irony and biting nature of Steely Dan. There is a lot of adolescence and innocence in these songs, reflecting back on Fagen's time growing up. The album is also one of the first to be recorded entirely in digital. Steely Dan had tried this approach fo“Gaucho,” but it didn't work out and they reverted to analog. Audiophiles gravitate to The Nightfly, and EQ Magazine ranks it as one of the top 10 Best Recorded Albums of All Time, up there with The Beatles' “Sergeant Peppers” and The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds.”Donald Fagan had problems with depression after recording “The Nightfly,” and largely disappeared from the music scene through the rest of the 80's. Fagan said in 2006 that he hasn't listened to "The Nightfly" since making it. However, he did record two other albums which are considered to form "The Nightfly Trilogy," including Kamakiriad" from 1993 and "Morph the Cat" from 2006. There would also be a reunion of Steely Dan later on.Bruce presents this jazzy album for this week's episode. I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)This lead single is also the track that leads off the album. "I.G.Y." stands for International Geophysical Year, which was a project that lasted between July 1957 and December 1958. It encompassed eleven earth science projects and included collaboration between East and West. The song reflects the positivity of that time and collaboration. The song was released in September 1982 and reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of November. The NightflyThis track imagines a late night DJ named Lester who plays jazz on WJAZ out of Baton Rouge, and also takes calls from conspiracy theorists. is about a spiritual quest. While not released as a single, this song did receive some airplay on FM stations in the 80's.Ruby BabyAlthough heavily arranged with close harmonies by Fagen, this is a cover song originally performed by the Drifters in 1956. A number of artists have covered it over time, including Dion (number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962), Billy "Crash Craddock, Del Shannon, Mitch Ryder, and Bobby Darin.New FrontierThis fun single did not break into the top 40, but it was a frequent video on the then-new MTV channel. The idea of the song is that an adolescent boy is bringing a girl over to his parents' bomb shelter for a good time. "Yes, we're going to have a wing ding..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop (from the motion picture "Tootsie" )Dustin Hoffman stars in this cross-dressing romance comedy about an actor disguising himself as a woman to land a job. STAFF PICKS:Steppin' Out by Joe JacksonRob starts the staff picks with a song inspired by Jackson's time in New York City. The song reflects the excitement of a drive around town, and hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is off the album "Night and Day," which reflects New York City during the day on side 1, and the City during the night on side 2.Mexican Radio by Wall of VoodooWayne's staff pick is a weird one. This new wave act describes listening to the broadcasts of high-wattage unregulated Mexican radio stations whose signals were strong enough to be picked up in small town U.S.A. Wall of Voodoo's $15,000 video would be on constant repeat on MTV.Maneater by Hall & Oates Lynch brings us a big Hall & Oates hit that spent four weeks at number 1 on the charts. The song describes a woman who is bad news, only looking for money. The video features a live panther, that got loose in the rafters of the set at one point, prompting a hasty retreat from Darryl Hall. The sax part is played by Charles "Mr. Casual" DeChant, who also appears in the video during his solo. She Sheila by The ProducersBruce finishes up the staff picks with Atlanta's own The Producers. This is the big single off the band's second album "You Make the Heat." It went to number 48 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, and alternates between an ethereal synth part and a high energy New Wave sound. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bonzo's Montreux by Led ZeppelinJohn Bonham's live drum solo closes out this week's podcast.

Back in 1978 was a typical day like another Sunday in Salem where it was fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.? Was that just too much heaven for a blue collar man? When Monday came along, in a strange way, perhaps you felt alive, and were ready to take a chance again. With that double vision now cleared, you left that bottle on the shelf and proceeded straight on back to work. After a time, all that bad blood would recede, and even the French who had labeled you “Le Freak” had a change of heart. This week, ooh baby baby, we travel back through those time passages to have a listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 18th, 1978. I have no problem taking on this load as a beast of burden and not once have I thought that I just wanna stop. #718 - Brian Ray The Brian Ray Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. We're honored to have you tuning in for an especially magical episode featuring an ultra talent in live and recorded music: Brian Ray. Paul was asked not long ago, who he has interviewed that was “Just plain cool.” Paul thought about it and said, “Hmmm. Coolest, you said?” He was reminded of an in-person interview he recorded with Brian Ray at a Ritz Carlton hotel back in 2005. As you'll soon hear, Brian Ray is just a cool, laidback kind of guy. Well, he did grow up in Southern California. Now, about Brian Ray… He's a guitarist, singer, songwriter, recording artist, producer. He's appeared on some great recordings of artists ranging from Etta James, Paul McCartney, Steve Goodman, Willy DeVille, Stephen Bishop, Smokey Robinson and Shakira, etcetera! He's also toured with Paul McCartney for the last 20 years playing lead, rhythm and bass guitar. Brian was on tour with Paul McCartney and was kind enough to meet up with Paul. Jeff Pike, Paul's good buddy recorded the interview as well as some acoustic / vocal performances. At the time of the interview you're about to hear, Brian Ray was releasing his debut solo album, “Mondo Magneto.” You'll get to hear a couple of those songs “recorded live.” You'll probably want to get the record, which you can get on Amazon or Apple Music. It's a really phenomenal record featuring some great songwriting, one song even features the late Etta James. Long before the National Park Service was established, the geological site commonly known as Mammoth Cave in the state of Kentucky was a popular tourist attraction. Open to the public for guided tours beginning in 1830's this massive labyrinth of underground caverns and tunnels was first explored by enslaved people whose legacy of stewardship spans more than 5 generations. A Black man named Stephen Bishop lead much of the earliest explorations of the cave system and named many of the most prominent features. An expert on the largest cave in the world that winds more than 406 miles beneath the Earth's surface, Bishop was said to have guided the most prominent scientists, political figures and writers of the mid-19th century including the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was on a visit to Mammoth Cave guided by Bishop in 1857 that Emerson wrote the essay Illusions, inspired by a feature called the Star Camber. But when Mammoth Cave was established as the 26th National Park on July 1, 1941, local residents Black and white, were forced off the surrounding land to make room for the new federally managed recreation area. Under the provisions of Jim Crow era segregation, Black Americans were ineligible to become National Park rangers, despite their long history of service as cave guides. Grave of Stephen Bishop at Mammoth Cave National Park Born in Glasgow, Kentucky, in 1947, Jerry Bransford recalls being told as a young Black man to use the rear entrance of the Mammoth Cave Visitors Center. Though a direct descendant of Materson and Nick Bransford, who with Stephan Bishop had led tours and explorations of the cave, he was denied the same privileges as a white visitor. As a child Bransford only heard of his family's legacy from the stories told to him by his father. Removed from their role as interpreters of this historic site, little evidence remained of all that his ancestors had done to preserve it. After a 30- career in marketing as a photographer for the Dow Corning Corporation In Nashville, Bransford was recruited by the National Park Service to use his skills as a storyteller to share his family legacy of preservation. Today at the age of 74, after 17 seasons at Mammoth Cave, National Park Ranger Jerry Bransford continues the tradition as an interpretive guide. Bransford leads tours at Mammoth Cave National Park through much of the late spring and summer seasons. As a master storyteller he brings to life an incredible narrative of a proud legacy of environmental protection and the preservation of history that goes back more than 150 years.
