Are you #KillingIt? That's a question that seems to be on a lot of minds these days, with the advancements in social media and entrepreneurship. People are expected to be bossing up 24/7, no days off. On the surface, there's nothing wrong with achievement and being your own boss. But, as pointed out in the interview, by an average of the numbers, all people can't always win at that. The show is a hilarious, and insightful, look at that culture and mindset, and how it can try to diminish the basic principles of human decency. There's a sad but funny scene in which #ClaudiaODoherty character, Jillian, (one of the sweetest characters in the series) lies about her living and financial situation in order to not be labeled a "loser" by a seemingly nice (but actually a jerk) guy she likes. The group dynamic is one where the people she thought were friendly start bashing people that have her living situation, and she feels forced to fit in. It's an interesting scene that takes a sharp turn, creating almost a cognitive dissonance between how decent they seem vs. how shallow they really are. The show, starring #CraigRobinson, takes many interesting turns, showing the struggles of trying to make it when so many things can go awry. At the same time, it questions what it actually takes (and at what cost to conscience) to make it in a world that doesn't care if you lose, how or why; a world that only rewards winning. (There's also an interesting irony/metaphor to the fact that the contest in the show involves "killing snakes" to win the money - but also maybe becoming a human one in the process.) Priyanka Chopra Jonas is a multi-faceted talent and one of the most recognized personalities in the world. Under her production banner Purple Pebble Pictures, Chopra Jonas is partnered with Amazon Studios on a First Look TV deal, where she will develop a slate of global content for the streamer. Purple Pebble Pictures is also partnered with ViacomCBS to create original content focused on diversity and inclusion for its entertainment and youth channels. Chopra Jonas made history as the first Indian-born actor to lead an American network TV series when she starred in the ABC dramatic series Quantico, winning two People’s Choice awards for her work. The Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, was conferred on her in 2016. She was featured on the cover of Time magazine’s “Time 100” issue, in which she was named one of the “Most Influential People” in the world, and has been recognized as one of Forbes “Most Powerful Women.”Chopra Jonas is a global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and recipient of the prestigious Danny Kaye Humanitarian award. He was accepted to med school, but deferred his admission, as he got an amazing travel grant for a one-year trip around the world.When he returned, his friend Charlie Grandy was applying for writing jobs, and Dan asked if they could apply together. Michael Schur is one of the most adept minds in TV comedy. From his early days producing the Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon-era Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, to his work as one of the key writers on The Office, he charted a career that touched some of the best TV comedy of the 2000s. But in the 2010s, he’s become perhaps the principal figure in network TV comedy, with his shows Parks and Recreation and The Good Place. We have another Harvard grad this week … comedy writer Dan Goor, currently supervising producer of the hit sitcom Parks and Recreation. Click image to play video; more details are below. Though Dan actually studied biochemistry at Harvard, he spent his free time doing improv and theatre. He was accepted to med school, but deferred his admission, as he got an amazing travel grant for a one-year trip around the world. When he returned, his friend Charlie Grandy was applying for writing jobs, and Dan asked if they could apply together. Their application was approved at The Daily Show, and the rest was history! After writing for several years on The Daily Show, Dan & Charlie decided to break up their writing partnership, and Dan went on to write for Last Call with Carson Daily, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Office, and now Parks and Recreation. In this long interview, Dan goes into great detail about the process of writing Parks and Recreation, with very helpful tidbits from behind the scenes, including how to build a story, how to get the most out of the various departments, and the role of improv in the performances. He also gives very practical advice on writing your own pilots and spec scripts. You don't want to miss this one!
