Émile Zola est un écrivain et journaliste français, né le 2 avril 1840 à Paris et mort le 29 septembre 1902 dans la même ville. Considéré comme le chef de file du naturalisme, c'est l'un des romanciers français les plus populaires2, les plus publiés, traduits et commentés dans le monde entier. Ses romans ont connu de très nombreuses adaptations au cinéma et à la télévision. Sa vie et son œuvre ont fait l'objet de nombreuses études historiques. Sur le plan littéraire, il est principalement connu pour Les Rougon-Macquart, fresque romanesque en vingt volumes dépeignant la société française sous le Second Empire et qui met en scène la trajectoire de la famille des Rougon-Macquart, à travers ses différentes générations et dont chacun des représentants d'une époque et d'une génération particulière fait l'objet d'un roman. Les dernières années de sa vie sont marquées par son engagement dans l'affaire Dreyfus avec la publication en janvier 1898, dans le quotidien L'Aurore, de l'article intitulé « J'accuse… ! » qui lui a valu un procès pour diffamation et un exil à Londres la même année. « J'accuse… ! » est le titre d'un article rédigé par Émile Zola au cours de l'affaire Dreyfus et publié dans le journal L'Aurore du 13 janvier 18981, n° 87, sous la forme d'une lettre ouverte au président de la République française, Félix Faure. En 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, officier français d'état-major d'origine alsacienne, et d'obédience judaïque, accusé à tort d'avoir livré des documents à l'Allemagne, est condamné à l'emprisonnement à perpétuité et expédié sur l'île du Diable, en Guyane française. Sa famille organise sa défense et le véritable traître est identifié en novembre 1897 : c'est le commandant Walsin Esterhazy, fait reconnu par le lieutenant-colonel Georges Picquart, chef du service des renseignements militaires. Mais Picquart est limogé par l'état-major, manœuvre visant à empêcher toute reprise judiciaire de l'affaire. Malgré tout, l'élargissement du soutien à Dreyfus qui s'ensuit oblige l'état-major de l'armée à faire comparaître le commandant Esterhazy en conseil de guerre ; il est acquitté à l'unanimité le 11 janvier 1898. C'est ce verdict scandaleux qui pousse Émile Zola à intervenir de façon très forte, en s'exposant personnellement à des poursuites en cour d'assises, devant un tribunal civil et non militaire. En lançant par voie de presse des accusations nominatives contre dix acteurs de l'affaire, dont le ministre de la Guerre et le chef d'état-major de l'armée, le romancier sait qu'il se met sous le coup de la loi sur la liberté de la presse du 29 juillet 1881 ; il l'écrit même à la fin de son texte. Zola comparaît effectivement au mois de février 1898. Bien que le président de la Cour interdise de parler de l'affaire Dreyfus, plus de cent témoins parviennent à s'exprimer. Zola est condamné au maximum de la peine et s'exile à Londres. Mais le procès a mis au grand jour les failles de l'accusation contre Alfred Dreyfus, ce qui a pour conséquence, quelques mois plus tard, la révision de son cas (procès de Rennes en 1899, suivi de sa grâce immédiate, et de sa réhabilitation par la Cour de cassation en 1906). « J'accuse… ! », l'article d'Émile Zola, au travers de son engagement et en raison des résultats obtenus, est donc le symbole du pouvoir de la presse mis au service de la défense d'un homme et de la vérité.

The French artillery officer Captain Alfred Dreyfus is wrongfully convicted of communicating French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris, initiating a political scandal that rocks the Third Republic. ---- Important Information ---- The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. "L'Affaire", as it is known in French, has come to symbolise modern injustice in the Francophone world, and it remains one of the most notable examples of a complex miscarriage of justice and antisemitism. The role played by the press and public opinion proved influential in the conflict. A scandal that rocked France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Dreyfus affair involved a Jewish artillery captain in the French army, Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), who was falsely convicted of passing military secrets to the Germans. In 1894, after a French spy at the German Embassy in Paris discovered a ripped-up letter in a waste basket with handwriting said to resemble that of Dreyfus, he was court-martialed, found guilty of treason and sentenced to life behind bars on Devil’s Island off of French Guiana. In a public ceremony in Paris following his conviction, Dreyfus had the insignia torn from his uniform and his sword broken and was paraded before a crowd that shouted, “Death to Judas, death to the Jew.” In 1896, the new head of the army’s intelligence unit, Georges Picquart, uncovered evidence pointing to another French military officer, Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy, as the real traitor. However, when Picquart told his bosses what he’d discovered he was discouraged from continuing his investigation, transferred to North Africa and later imprisoned. Nevertheless, word about Esterhazy’s possible guilt began to circulate. In 1898, he was court-martialed but quickly found not guilty; he later fled the country. After Esterhazy’s acquittal, a French newspaper published an open letter titled “J’Accuse…!” by well-known author Emile Zola in which he defended Dreyfus and accused the military of a major cover-up in the case. As a result, Zola was convicted of libel, although he escaped to England and later managed to return to France. The Dreyfus affair deeply divided France, not just over the fate of the man at its center but also over a range of issues, including politics, religion and national identity. In 1899, Dreyfus was court-martialed for a second time and found guilty. No - it is how the late French President Jacques Chirac described the so-called “Dreyfus Affair”, which shook France from top to bottom a century ago.   Alfred Dreyfus was a Jewish army officer who was convicted on false charges of passing military secrets to the Germans. Malas noticias para quienes han querido asimilar la película a una suerte de jugada deshonesta donde el realizador aparece como víctima. Or, depuis les années 70, il est accusé d'avoir violé une mineure aux États-Unis et d'avoir fui le pays pour échapper à sa sentence. D'autres actrices ont pris la parole ces dernières années pour dénoncer des crimes similaires qu'aurait commis réalisateur franco-polonais. Malgré ces accusations, la France refuse d'extrader Roman Polanski qui continue de vivre en liberté, de réaliser des films et de recevoir des récompenses. J'Accuse! Cinema Cemetery explores the Life of Emile Zola, the famous French author and social advocate of the Dreyfus Affair. In a tale largely forgotten to modern audiences, this film explores Zola's life from "starving artist" to a successful celebrity who is drawn back to a life of civil unrest when he learns of corruption and cover-up in the highest levels of the French Government. Protesterna som väntas på kvällens franska Césargala har fått den världsberömde regissören Roman Polanski - som är nominerad till 12 priser för sin senaste film "J'accuse" eller "En officer och spion" - att lämna återbud. 1977 dömdes han i USA för en våldtäkt mot en trettonårig flicka och han har också anklagats för fler övergrepp på senare tid.
