Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you looking to scale your law firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, hosts Jim Hacking and Tyson Mutrux engage in a conversation with Dawn Smith, a managing partner at a law firm specializing in nursing home litigation. Dawn shares her unconventional journey to becoming a lawyer and some of the things she has learned.Dawn provides some insights on her learnings when she scaled her law firm. One of these learnings was the importance of having defined written processes. Hiring new attorneys means different perspectives and ways of doing things. Without a defined process, it is easy for things to get out of hand and for attorneys to handle things their own way that don't align with the vision of the firm. Some simple processes that should be outlined are how demand letters are written and how mediation sessions are handled.Since practicing law can have an emotional toll, Dawn speaks to the importance of supporting staff when handling tough cases. It is crucial to have open dialogue with those who are hearing horrific cases over and over. Building a culture of openness within a firm is key to making sure the mental health of staff is always prioritized and people are not negatively affected.Take a listen!Jim's Hack: Read the book “The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership” which talks about taking radical responsibility and learning through curiosity. Dawn's Tip: Choose one area of law and niche down. She discusses her relocation experience as she relocated twice in order to advance her career and provides lessons and strategies to help you decide whether moving to a new city is the right path for you.   QUOTES “[When it comes to applying to jobs outside your area] I think it's really about your experience so far so for example, if you've sent out, 100s of resumes and applications in the area that you are currently living in and you're not getting any traction with respect to either interviews or even invited to come in to talk to someone about a position, then I think it's a good idea to start expanding your geographic space outwards.”  - Dawn Smith [4:52] “[When deciding on when you should start considering buying a home in your new location] a year is really a good barometer in figuring out the fit between you and the place of employment, you don't want to jump too quickly between jobs because that doesn't look really good on your resume.”  - Dawn Smith [10:06] “I always do a pro con list and I always do, what are all the pros, what are all the cons, I kind of weigh them, and then have a conversation with my partner about what makes the most sense and then you're making a data driven decision on that.”  - Dawn Smith [20:38]   TIMESTAMPS [1:20] Meet Dawn [4:28] When to decide between relocating or sticking it out in your current city when it comes to searching for a new career opportunity [5:53] Deciding what location to move to in search for your next career opportunity [9:56] When to consider buying a home in your new city [10:42] Bias from recruiters about candidates applying from out of city/area when they haven't moved to the location yet and how to combat this  [12:02] Compromising on a video interview with the company at your target location if they aren't willing to pay for your travel expenses when a certain interview stage tends to be an in person interview [13:30] Evaluating whether company size matters when it comes to applying for positions at your target location and if company size is an indicator of whether the company will pay for your travel expenses to bring you in for an in person interview or not [14:51] Asking for relocation assistance in a job offer [15:56] How much time can you ask for before you start your new job so you have time to move and settle down at your new location [17:13] Budgeting your relocation expenses and what to move with and what to sell as a single individual [19:20] Considering moving for an opportunity while your partner is happy with where they are in their career [20:53] Advice on adjusting and adapting to your new surroundings both professionally and personally [23:35] Dawn's lessons of relocation that she learned in her 1st relocation that she applied to her 2nd relocation to make it a more smoother experience [26:18] Interview red flags to watch out for so you don't move locations for a company that may not be a good fit for you for the long term [27:59] Thoughts on adjusting someone's current salary based on where the individual is located if they decide to move away from the office to a place with a lower cost of living [31:57] If Dawn had any regrets with her 2nd relocation where she moved away from family and friends to grow her career [34:41] Summarizing the relocation conversation and whether relocation is the right move for you [36:17] Whether you should highlight why you are applying for a specific role at the company if you are not currently located in the area in your cover letter and/or resume [37:21] The one major career challenge Dawn had to overcome to get to where she is today [39:33] Contacting Dawn [40:19] Outro   RESOURCES & RELEVANT LINKS DMD Partners Incorporated Dawn Smith on Facebook Chan With A Plan Chan With A Plan Facebook Group

The Women In Comedy Festival is one of my favorite annual events in Boston, and has been since its more humble beginning in 2009, when most of the shows were held in one venue, ImprovBoston. It has expanded in some way every year, and this year, they brought in some scouts all over the industry to see some of the amazing talent – 115 acts in all. I bounced around to different shows all five days of the festival, and tried to catch people at after parties or between venues. I got four on site, which make up this episode, and one other by phone, with headliner Emma Willmann, which will be next week's episode. I interviewed three stand-up comedians and one filmmaker for this week's episode – Nina Daniels, Will Martin, Tina Friml, and Dawn Smith. I'll give them each their own introductions as they come up. Daniels calls herself a triple minority in comedy – a black woman who plays the cello. You can find out more about her and her web series, The Model's Diet, on www.ninadaniels.com. Martin had a standout set on one of strangest showcase of the week, “Rated G n. R,” a mix of clean and blue standup backed by a Guns n' Roses cover band, Cocaine Tongue. He's on Twitter at @MrWillMartin. Friml killed on the NBC Comedy Spotlight show, and she's been doing comedy less than two years. Dawn Smith used to work on political ad campaigns. Now she makes fun of them on Paid For By, the web series she created, wrote, directed, and co-produced. Smith has two episodes done and is looking for funding to finish up the series, so if you hear this and you're inclined to help, you can find out how at paidforby.com. This week's featured track comes to us from wife and husband team The Smoking Flowers. It's called “Young & Brave,” and it's the first single from their upcoming album, Let's Die Together, out June 8. If you come to the Department of Tangents site on Monday morning, you'll get to see the video in which they play some of their favorite musicians, from Johnny and June to John and Yoko to all four Ramones. You'll get to see the video and read a short e-mail interview with the band.

Dawn is a Christian speaker, musician, singer/songwriter, charting recording artist with Urgent Records, as well as an author. She has recorded thirteen CD's and written two books. She is a former Miss South Carolina and second runner-up to Miss America. CBS produced a made-for-TV feature film based on her life story, “Nightmare in Columbia County,” which continues to air internationally on cable television.   Dawn has performed and ministered in thousands of churches during the past twenty-five-plus years, as well as being featured on the Billy Graham Crusade, the 700 Club, Reader's Digest, The FBI Profiles on the Discovery Network, In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley, TLC's What Not To Wear's Ms. Pageant Rewind with Stacie Lundon, and more recently, On the Case with Paula Zahn.  Grace so Amazing, her first book, is the true story of the tragic kidnapping and murder of her younger sister in 1985. It became the largest manhunt in South Carolina's history, drawing national attention. She speaks about the sufficiency of God's grace, even to the point of forgiving the murderer.  Dawn ministers in more than seventy-five events annually. She is the mother of two college-age children, Hannah and Ross. They make their home in Columbia, SC. Her greatest joy is being a mother to her children, but she considers it a great privilege to share her music and ministry out of the story God is weaving into her life.
