Send us a textMy guest this week is Yasmin Sharifi, an operating room nurse with many decades of experience. She's here to give us a glimpse into, as she says, “what really goes on behind that red line.”Yasmin didn't initially set out to be an OR nurse. She started her career in med-surg but quickly encountered burnout due to a nursing shortage and inadequate patient-to-nurse ratios, often sharing 35 patients with another nurse. Realizing this was not sustainable, she transitioned to the PACU. When she was offered a chance to move into the operating room, she embraced the opportunity and discovered her true passion.Yasmin pointed out that in 1990, there were no formal orientation programs for OR nurses. However, resourcefulness is a nurse's superpower. She joined the professional organization AORN, purchased relevant books, and trained herself to adapt to the role.Fortunately, those days are behind us. Nurses entering the operating room today receive a comprehensive education and an orientation period that lasts nearly a year. And if you think being an OR nurse means you won't have to interact with patients and their families, Yasmin dispels that myth completely. We discussed the dynamics among the operating room team members, the egos involved, and the common goal that brings them all together: the patient. I'm confident you'll enjoy and learn from our discussion. After being in charge for almost her entire career, Yasmin has now taken charge of her own business, OR RN Mentor. Here, she provides expert insights, practical tips, and real-world experiences designed to help others thrive in the OR. Now that's what I call giving back.In the five-minute snippet: it's 80's rock for the win. Respectful, patient-centered communication can play a huge role in improving health outcomes and helping eliminate health disparities.  In today's episode hosted by Movement Is Life's Conchita Burpee, we explore the critical elements of effective, patient-centered communication. Our guests: Dr. Mauvareen Beverley, an executive-level physician with 20 years of experience advocating for improving patient engagement and cultural competency and the author of the book, “Nine Simple Solutions to Achieve Health Equity: A Guide for Healthcare Professionals and Patients”  Dr. Janet Austin, the founder of JSA Chronic Disease Foundation, a national nonprofit aimed at providing resources and support to help people who experience pain due to chronic diseases have a better life. Beverley says effective doctor-patient communication starts with heightened human value for each patient, regardless of their background or circumstances: “Everybody talks about being respectful and this and that, but if you don't value me, you think respect is going to come into your mind or your brain?” Austin shares her personal experience as a lifelong chronic disease patient in explaining how small acts of kindness from healthcare providers can go a long way. “I was having a really rough time just a few months ago, and of course, I'm there to talk with [my internal medicine doctor], and I'm crying,” Austin says. “She actually said, ‘Janet, I'm going to go ahead and book you to come back to see me in three months, I'm just going to make time for me to listen.' And I just… I left so optimistic because someone said that they wanted to listen.”  Never miss an episode – be sure to subscribe to The Health Disparities podcast from Movement Is Life on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Dr. Rob Boyer, founder of Trailhead Clinics, has developed a subscription-based primary care model in response to the limitations and pressures of the traditional healthcare system, which he believes undervalues primary care. For $99 per month, patients receive 24/7 access to a wide range of medical services, aiming to improve healthcare accessibility without replacing insurance. Boyer's approach prioritizes meaningful doctor-patient interactions and seeks to address the growing demand for more personalized, patient-centered care, particularly in rural areas.Support the show: https://www.montrosepress.com/site/forms/subscription_services/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
