In this episode, we commemorate Al Nakba for the 77th year. We trace the story of one Palestinian family displaced from the al-Baqa‘a neighborhood in West Jerusalem during the 1948 Nakba. From Victoria's memories of fleeing her rose-filled home to her grandson Majdi's search for what was lost, we explore how memory, loss, and resilience are passed down through generations. Through personal testimony and historical context, this episode reflects on what it means to reclaim narratives, and why Palestinians continue to remember, resist, and return.Thank you for tuning into This is Palestine, the official podcast of The IMEU! In this episode, we hear from Dr. Noor Abdalla, a Syrian-American dentist and the wife of Mr. Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent Palestinian student activist and legal U.S. resident who has been illegally detained by ICE since March 8, 2025, for speaking out about Palestinian rights. Mr. Khalil was abducted by ICE while coming home from a Ramadan iftar with Dr. Abdalla, who was 8 months pregnant at the time. Mr. Khalil's chilling abduction has sent shockwaves through student and activist communities around the world. In her own words, Dr. Abdalla recounts the horrific moment her husband was taken in front of her and speaks with host Diana Buttu about the ongoing toll this separation has taken on their lives. On April 21, Dr. Abdalla gave birth to their first child without Mahmoud by her side. In a cruel decision, the Department of Homeland Security denied Mr. Khalil's request and permission to attend the birth of his first child, whom Mr. Khalil has only met over video. While speaking with Ms. Buttu, Dr. Abdalla not only delivers a powerful call for her husband's freedom, but she also states that this is not just about Mahmoud; this is about all of us, and we must refuse to be silent about Palestinian rights and continue to speak out during times of injustice. Mr. Khalil is one of the many students and scholars being targeted by the Trump administration for speaking out against Israel's genocide in Gaza and demanding that the US stop supplying weapons to Israel. From Columbia University to Tufts, ICE has orchestrated a wave of politically motivated unlawful detentions—often in public, and without warning or due process. On December 27, 2024, the Israeli army kidnapped Dr. Abu Safyia while burning and besieging the Kamal Adwan Hospital. In this episode, we hear testimonies from the family of Dr. Abu Safiya, including his wife Ms. Albina Abu Safiya, and their son Elias Abu Safiya, who speak about the horrifying Israeli military attacks leading to Israel kidnapping the beloved doctor. Currently, there are hundreds of Palestinian medical workers being unjustly held captive by Israel along with Dr.Abu Safiya, including Dr. Ahmed Muhanna, a prominent doctor and director of the Al-Awda Hospital in Gaza. After nearly 16 months of genocide, Palestinians saw a long-awaited respite when a ceasefire was announced in mid-January. But while the bombs have stopped raining down on Gaza—for now—Israel's attacks on Palestinians across occupied lands continue. With only 42 days of ceasefire guaranteed, Israeli politicians are already plotting their return to war while escalating settler and state violence in the West Bank. This is the second episode in a three-part series in collaboration with Mondoweiss and Al-Shabaka, the Palestine Policy Network, where we explore what happens next and what the future of Palestine looks like. We'll dive into Hamas's vision for the “day after” in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority's struggle for power and legitimacy, and what Israel stands to gain—or lose—in the process. In this episode, we turn to Washington, where, in the third week of a fragile ceasefire, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister—and wanted war criminal—Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House. As Israeli officials were preparing for ceasefire negotiations in Qatar, Trump and Netanyahu sent an entirely different message: Trump declared that the U.S. would "own Gaza" and turn it into the Riviera of the Middle East—a statement widely condemned as a call for ethnic cleansing. To unpack these statements, their deeper implications, and what they reveal about the future of Gaza, we're joined by Palestinian human rights lawyer, analyst, and Al-Shabaka policy member, Diana Buttu. As we approach 2025, Israel continues to bomb, attack, and occupy the birthplace of Christmas. This year, church officials have shared that Christmas services across Palestine will be somber and highlight the call to end Israel's genocide in Gaza.Experts are even warning that Israel's genocide against Palestinians could lead to the elimination of the Palestinian Christians in the Gaza Strip. Before the genocide, there were between 1,000 - 1,700 Palestinian Christians in Gaza. Following Israel's relentless attacks, less than 600 Palestinian Christians remain.  Over the past year, Israel has destroyed the homes of nearly every Palestinian Christian family in Gaza. The majority of the Palestinian Christians continue to take shelter in the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius, both in Gaza City.  Israel has repeatedly bombed both churches. In this episode, Diana Buttu spoke with Rev. Dr. Isaac about Israel's increasing attacks on the Palestinian Christian community throughout all of Palestine, including the West Bank and Gaza. They discussed how these attacks are a part of Israel's broader genocidal campaign and objective to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their land.In a recent interview, Rev. Isaac said Israel has created “completely unlivable” conditions for Palestinians in the West Bank. He also posted a photo of the Israeli army building an additional checkpoint cutting off the city of Bethlehem from other key Palestinian cities. He described the photo with the caption: “Another gate installed by the Israeli military at the entrance of our town (and on the way to my kids' school). Today's episode was recorded just before the one-year anniversary of October 7th, the date marking the beginning of the most recent iteration of Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza. Unfortunately, we missed the release date, but we still felt it was crucial to share this conversation as events continue to unfold. Since the recording, Israel has not only continued its brutal assault on Gaza but has also intensified its aggression in Lebanon, with hundreds killed and over a million people displaced as Israel prepares for a ground invasion. In this episode, I speak with Diana Buttu, who offers a powerful analysis of Israel's colonial expansionist project, its use of propaganda, and its deliberate targeting of Palestinian civilians. Buttu also discusses the international community's inaction, particularly the U.S.'s role in enabling Israel's violence, and reflects on the sense of isolation and hopelessness felt by many Palestinians. She provides a deep dive into the internal dynamics of Israeli society, which supports and justifies these actions while offering little accountability for atrocities committed. Despite the devastating realities, Diana shares her thoughts on the importance of global solidarity and the hope for justice in the future. Meet Salma, a 12-year-old student who dreams of becoming a journalist, and Fatima, a university student who refuses to give up on her education despite Israel's relentless bombings, displacement, and the destruction of her university. Their stories of perseverance shine against the backdrop of Israel's deliberate targeting of schools, universities, and educators in Gaza, which has resulted in what can only be described as "scholasticide"—the calculated annihilation of Palestinian education. We also hear from Andera Abdullah, an educator from Birzeit University in the West Bank, who is providing remote learning to students in Gaza, and Dr. Sabri Saidam, former Palestinian Minister of Education, who shares his insights into Gaza's deep-rooted commitment to education despite decades of Israeli violence and attacks. FUN HALF LINK HERE: https://www.youtube.com/live/d4Uoj0YZu64 It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with David Freedlander, writer at New York Magazine, to discuss his recent piece on Truth Social, Trump's media company. Then, she speaks with Diana Buttu, Palestinian analyst and former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss the recent unrest in Israel after Israeli soldiers were detained for allegedly assaulting Palestinian prisoners. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's recent implosion in front of the National Association of Black Journalists Convention, the UAW's endorsement of Harris, Arizona primary results, Russian relations, the aftermath of Israel's recent escalations, dropping border arrests, Sudan, the Child Tax Credit, and federal protections for trans students, before watching the opening moments of Trump's complete meltdown in the face of media pushback. David Freedlander then joins, diving right into an outline of the massive fraud machine that is Donald Trump's Truth Social, a business considered generally worthless with massive losses alongside a market capitalization of $6 billion, functioning more as a financial proxy for Trump's political power than an actual valuation. Stepping back, Freedlander walks through Trump's background in wanting to push a social media company, and the role of his apprentice connections in making that a possibility after his first presidential term, before wrapping up with the danger this massive market capitalization can pose when it comes to Trump's political power, and why it continues to work. Diana Buttu and Emma then step right into the continuing horrors unfolding in Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine, parsing through the evolving story on the public and political backlash to Israel's attempt to detain and question 9 soldiers alleged of gang-raping captives, and looking at the massive scale of Israel's torture camp where this took place. Next, Buttu walks through the expansive reports on Israel's torture regime against Palestinians, with a particular focus on its motive of pure revenge and dehumanization, before briefly touching on the Israeli government/military's tacit acceptance of the fascist violence erupting against them. Wrapping up, Diana and Emma tackle Israel's recent attempts to escalate broader regional conflicts, and Bibi's lifeline of war and destruction. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Trump dance around his regret over the JD Vance pick, talk with Maje from Washington about the GOP's major fumbling of the Kamala Harris discourse, and Karie from NY explores the ahistorical approach of the right. Bill Maher hosts Hailey Welch (of Hawk Tuah origins) and it's just as uncomfortable as it sounds, Comrade Nancy Pelosi has an endearing moment with Matt Binder, and Donald Trump gets mad at his base for not voting enough. Charged by the United Nations General Assembly to ascertain the legality of the continued presence of Israel, as an occupying Power, in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, on July 19th, 2024, the International Court of the Justice, the highest court in the world on matters of international law, determined that “The Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the regime associated with them have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law.” It called for the end of the Occupation, the dismantling of the apartheid structure that supports and maintains it, and the removal of Israeli settlers and settlements. All member states of the United Nations are obligated to support each of these actions. Israel's response to this comprehensive and devastating report has been to dismiss it and hold itself above international law. In so doing it has sealed its reputation as a pariah state in the global community of nations. In today's special episode of Speaking Out of Place, we are honored to have eminent legal scholars Diana Buttu and Richard Falk join us to explain the significance of this historic document.Diana Buttu Haifa-based analyst, former legal advisor to Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian negotiators, and Policy Advisor to Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network.  She was also recently a fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. After earning a law degree from Queen's University in Canada and a Masters of Law from Stanford University, Buttu moved to Palestine in 2000. He's made it clear that he's not going to push for a ceasefire. He doesn't care about the Israeli captives. And so it's pretty clear to me that he's going to go ahead and attack Lebanon.” Israel has no aim to rescue its hostages. It never did. “If they actually cared about them, they would have done what should have been done very early on, which is negotiate a ceasefire. Instead, they've done the opposite. And this is why you can look at these ceasefire proposals with such skepticism. Because instead, what they've done is bombed Gaza to virtual smithereens.” Diana, whose father survived the Nakba in 1948, moved to Haifa in 2000. And like many others, she believed what the media told everyone to believe: that with a simple peace plan, Palestine would be fixed. Then she arrived in Palestine and saw the true reality. “All of the things that had been dismissed by the mainstream media,” she says, “I had dismissed too. I had dismissed this idea of settlements and the impact of settlements. And I kept thinking, it'll be undone. It'll all be undone. I dismissed the harm of what it means to be a Palestinian political prisoner, to be somebody who's abducted in the middle of the night. I dismissed the harm of the checkpoints. I dismissed a lot of things. And so when I arrived here, it was the first time that I had to confront the reality that this political process was not going to undo any of those harms.” Stopping the bombs is one thing. Stopping settlements, returning land, granting rights to Palestinians, and removing the literal wall that cages them is another. “They talk about reconfiguring the prison, reconfiguring the occupation, but they never talk about ending the occupation because this mentality of control permeates deep inside Israel.” There's only one way this ends, Diana says. “It's going to end when the world says that it's enough. And that's it.” Diana also shares haunting stories of Palestinian children who were kept in Israeli torture prisons for months, and the ways that western corporate media has worked to cover it up. This week's interview with Diana Buttu will not be paywalled. We hope you'll listen to and share her important perspective. Plus, catch this week's Thursday Throwdown: CNN compares Keffiyehs to Confederate Flags, where Van Jones claims that wearing a keffiyeh around Israeli government supporters is as much a call for violence as waving a confederate flag in Harlem. Mr. Abofoul is a Legal Researcher and Advocacy Officer with Al-Haq, one of the oldest Palestinian human rights organizations. On January 26th, the ICJ ruled that Israel is plausibly committing the crime of genocide in Gaza and must take all measures to prevent acts of genocide. Since the ruling, Israel has repeatedly violated the ICJ-mandated measures, including blocking the entry of life-saving food, aid, and water into Gaza. Numerous humanitarian groups have raised alarm about Israel using starvation as a weapon in Gaza, stating that famine in Gaza is imminent due to Israel's illegal blockade. Additionally, since the ICJ ruling, Israel has killed more than 3,500 Palestinians in Gaza, bringing the number of Palestinians Israel has killed in Gaza to more than 31,000. This includes Israel killing more than 13,000 children in Gaza since October. Mr. Abofoul, who is based in the Hague, discusses the significance of the ICJ's case and why it is a critical step towards ending ongoing impunity for Israel's horrific war crimes against the Palestinian people. In the episode, Mr. Abofoul and Ms. Buttu provide an in-depth discussion about Israel's inherent and long history of ethnic cleansing and genocidal intent in Palestine, within the context of the ICJ. Mr. Abofoul also discusses the long history of U.S. and Western hypocrisy in applying international law and how the Israel-genocide ICJ case is a testament to the international legal system. Listen to the episode for everything you need to know about the ICJ case and why it is critical for holding Israel accountable. In this episode, we take a deeper look into Israel's deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. Killing journalists is a war crime. According to the UN, Gaza is the deadliest place in the world for journalists right now. Additionally, the International Journalist Federation has issued a statement describing Israel's killing of Palestinian journalists over the past four months as “deliberate and systematic.” Host Diana Buttu speaks with Anan Quzmar, a representative from the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate (PJS). They discuss the critical role of Palestinian journalists, who are not only reporting the news about Israel's genocide but are also living it. Over the past four months, Israel has killed at least 120 Palestinian journalists. The PJS has described the conditions of Palestinian journalists in Gaza, saying, “They lost their families and they continue their work…They are without houses and they continue their work... Without food, without the security for them, without their families.” Listen to learn more about the stories of Palestinian journalists and why they continue to remain absolute in their reporting and expose Israel's war crimes to the world. The Silencing of Palestinian Students in Israeli Universities

In the aftermath of October 7, Palestinian students at Israeli higher education institutions quickly faced attacks for their social media posts. These attacks, coordinated between Israeli government officials, Israeli institutions, and far-right groups, targeted students who expressed dissent against Israel's attacks on Gaza. This led to the expulsion or suspension of students for alleged violations of university codes of conduct. In other cases, students faced criminal charges, while others were physically attacked in their dorms. It's important to note that these measures were taken while the universities were out of session, in fact, before the semester had begun, and were based solely on social media posts, unrelated to any campus activities. Some of the so-called offensive posts involved students liking or sharing a post, sometimes providing context to the October 7 events or expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. In some instances, students posted calls to end Israel's attacks, while others were unrelated, such as posting verses from the Quran. In most cases, fellow students reported these posts, and the repressive measures extended beyond just these actions. Host Diana Buttu speaks with Adi Mansour, a lawyer at Adalah, a civil rights organization for Palestinians in Israel. Adalah has represented more than 120 students facing disciplinary measures, yet there are hundreds more affected. Adi discusses with us the measures imposed on these students, the coordinated campaign against them, and the reasons behind it. We also explore the actions, or rather the inactions, of universities in addressing genocidal speech against Palestinians.Thank you for listening to 'This is Palestine'!  Follow our host Diana Buttu on Twitter here  Follow us on Instagram here Follow us on Twitter here Follow us on Facebook here Visit our website here

It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam speaks with Diana Buttu, Palestinian analyst and former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss the International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s recent ruling in the case South Africa brought against Israel. First, Sam runs through updates on US-Israeli military action in the Middle East, the House GOP, US weapons exports, US labor action, Donald Trump, and French farmers, before admiring Florida Rep. Salazar's poor politicking and walking through the insanity of the West revoking aid for UNRWA in the wake of the International Court of Justice's ruling against Israel. Diana Buttu then dives into the ICJ's recent ruling in South Africa's genocide case against Israel over their war on Gaza, walking through the decision itself, the makeup of the justices, and why the near-unanimity in their decision is completely unsurprising considering South Africa's overwhelming evidence, also touching on why the ICJ's ruling is about as close to a ceasefire charge as we could've asked for. After walking Sam through the actual working definition of genocide, and the importance of the third-party obligations under the Genocide Convention and ICJ, Buttu assesses the active culpability of the West in Israel's genocide, furthered by the recent revoking of funding for UNRWA. Wrapping up, they work through Israel's response to the ICJ ruling, whether they'll follow the decision, and what to make of much of the Israeli populace's uncritical support for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Sam takes in some great Hip-Hop recommendations from the NYT's The Daily, the Five and OAN conspire about the Taylor Swift psyop, and Tim Pool cannot STAND people doubting Trump's anti-vax Bona Fides. The MR Crew also watches another Climate Defiance action and talks with Travis from Birmingham about the greater context of a vote for president, Ricky from San Diego dives into Biden's support for genocide, and Penn Jillette pulls a good take out of his hat. Terrance from Laguna Beach discusses getting involved in pro-Palestinian organizing, plus, your calls and IMs! On October the 27th, Israel cut off all phone and internet communications to the Gaza Strip, further plunging the area into darkness. The cutting of internet and phone communications meant that vital life-saving systems such as ambulances, rescuers, and hospitals could not be reached to treat the injured or to rescue those trapped under the rubble. Cutting off the internet also meant that Israel's crimes would be carried out in the dark. But in the midst of this, the volunteer initiative 'Connecting Gaza' was formed, led by Mirna El Helbawi an author and activist, who decided to set up a system for donors around the world to purchase E-SIMs or virtual SIM cards. This was to help Palestinians skirt telecommunications blackouts amid Israeli bombing across the Gaza Strip.Thank you for listening to 'This is Palestine'!  Follow our host Diana Buttu on Twitter here  Follow us on Instagram here Follow us on Twitter here Follow us on Facebook here Visit our website here

The case in which South Africa accuses Israel of violating the genocide convention at the International Court of Justice began this week with oral arguments presented by South Africa and Israel. The court will base its decisions on whether to order several provisional measures, including instructing Israel to suspend all military operations in Gaza, solely based on these hearings. Our regular host, Diana Buttu, who was part of the team that assisted in the successful litigation against Israel's Apartheid Wall before the International Court of Justice in 2004, breaks down the events of this week.Thank you for listening to 'This is Palestine'!  Follow our host Diana Buttu on Twitter here  Follow us on Instagram here Follow us on Twitter here Follow us on Facebook here Visit our website here
