Ahmad (21 yrs old) was in his third year of dental school with only two remaining. Hamza (24 yrs old) was supposed to graduate this June: He was a volunteer at Al-Shifa until it was obliterated. The three siblings survived the destruction of their home, food shortages, a long journey to the border, and finding an apartment to rent in Cairo, Egypt. Only a few weeks later they were doing an interview on zoom with a Canadian for a feminist podcast they'd never heard of, telling the story of what they lived and what goes on for the loved ones they left behind. Each of the Jaber siblings chooses a monologue to read: Hamza reads #30: Yasmeen Abu Amer. Ahmad reads #8: Ehab Elayan. Tarneem reads #13: Reema El Sadi. "We relate to every single word in this monologue," Tarneem says."But this war, is worse than anything we lived before."Support them to complete their mother's parting wish: to finish their education. Special thanks for the audio mastering done by former Gaza resident Mohammed “MoKu” Kutkut (ig @mokutkut) to bring it to some level of clarity. Words cannot describe the horrific state of Gaza's healthcare system (if it can be described as such) or the point of view of medical personnel taking on the harrowing task of saving as many lives as feasibly possible under a genocidal siege, but Dr. Mohammed Altalla does his best to do so as one of the few doctors still alive or in the capacity to take on such a burden in Gaza's only fully functioning hospital, Al Aqsa. A teaching assistant at The Faculty of Medicine at Al Azhar University in Cairo and a medical director of Al Amal Health Center. Dr. Altalla wakes up every day to manage the critical task as surgeon for the Surgery Department of Al Aqsa Hospital. Dr. Altalla had the misfortune of witnessing one of the worst surges of patients as a result of the Al Nussiret Massacre which resulted in 270 + murdered and over 700 severely injured. In defiance of the nightmarish and unsafe conditions weaponized to drive medical staff out of Gaza, Dr. Altalla refuses to evacuate until there is a permanent ceasefire. As electricity is in obvious scarcity, the internet coverage being extremely undependable, a couple bombs being dropped in the background when he was recording and a drone loitering overhead the entire time, the interview had over a dozen interruptions with very poor quality of audio and video capture, so editing the final result only yielded so much. Yet despite the technical nightmare of interviewing anybody within the kill box of Gaza, the good doctor was able to convey the plight of medical workers throughout the strip, the aftermath of the Al Nussiret Massacre, the grave nature of the IDF's sadism towards medical staff and patients at Al Shifa hospital as a campaign of democide, the more probable estimate of Gaza's casualties being North of 50,000 murdered, a personal story of a specific patient who left a permanent imprint on his heart, and the faith that drives most of Gaza's medical staff into hell's gates for the sake of any innocent lives they may manage to preserve. You can support Dr. Altalla through his Gofundme: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-dr-mohammeds-medical-mission-in-gaza?utm_campaign=p_cp+fundraiser-sidebar&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer IG: https://www.instagram.com/dr.mohammed_altalla?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== #doctors #nurses #medical #hospital #paramedics #medicine #crises #disaster#internationalnews #warzoneclips #veteran #politicalnews #palestina #politics #political #internationalrelations #internationallaw #colonialoutcasts #counterterrorism #globalsecurity #warinukraine #warinukraine2024 #taiwannews #chinataiwan #chinataiwanconflict

Sari Nusseibeh's book Avicenna's Al-Shifā': Oriental Philosophy (Routledge, 2018) deals with the philosophy of Ibn Sina - Avicenna as he was known in the Latin West- a Persian Muslim who lived in the eleventh century, considered one of the most important figures in the history of philosophy. Although much has been written about Avicenna, and especially about his major philosophical work, Al-Shifa, this book presents the rationalist Avicenna in an entirely new light, showing him to have presented a theory where our claims of knowledge about the world are in effect just that, claims, and must therefore be underwritten by our faith in God. His project enlists arguments in psychology as well as in language and logic. In a sense, the ceiling he puts on the reach of reason can be compared with later rationalists in the Western tradition, from Descartes to Kant -though, unlike Descartes, he does not deem it necessary to reconstruct his theory of knowledge via a proof of the existence of God. Indeed, Avicenna's theory presents the concept of God as being necessarily presupposed by our theory of knowledge, and God as the Necessary Being who is presupposed by an existing world where nothing of itself is what it is by an intrinsic nature, and must therefore be as it is due to an external cause. The detailed and original analysis of Avicenna's work here is presented as what he considered to be his own, or 'oriental' philosophy. Presenting an innovative interpretation of Avicenna's thought, this book will appeal to scholars working on classical Islamic philosophy, kalām and the History of Logic. After six months of war in Gaza, the Palestinian medical infrastructure has collapsed, leaving tens of thousands of pregnant women without a safe place to deliver. Reporters Gabrielle Berbey and Salman Ahad Khan follow one mother over the final months of her pregnancy after she's forced to leave behind her home, work and doctor in Gaza City. We begin with the reporters' first call to Lubna Al Rayyes five weeks into the war, as she is seven months pregnant with her third child. Before the war's start on Oct. 7, Al Rayyes ran a prestigious school in Gaza City and her husband owned a clothing store. After being forced to evacuate their home, they fled to Khan Younis, but that city soon came under attack by the Israeli military as well. After being in regular contact with Al Rayyes for more than a month, the reporters lost contact with her. Berbey and Khan then track down Al Rayyes' sister, who was able to leave Gaza and relocate to Canada because of her husband's Canadian citizenship. Canada's Palestinian community lobbied the government to create an asylum program for displaced people in Gaza, but the program became mired in delays. Berbey and Khan eventually reconnect with Al Rayyes, who explains what happened with her delivery.Beyond the collapse of the medical system, the health of Palestinians in Gaza is threatened by food shortages. Khan speaks with Tessa Roseboom, a Dutch researcher who's been looking at how famine affects the development of babies in their mothers' womb. We then meet Dr. Ghassan Jawad, an OB-GYN from Gaza who was forced to deliver babies in cars, shelters and even on the street as the medical system stopped functioning. Jawad had worked at Al-Shifa hospital, which was heavily damaged in a recent attack by the Israeli military.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/newsletter Connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

The Florida Supreme Court delivered bittersweet news to abortion rights advocates on Monday. In one ruling, the court gave voters the chance to enshrine abortion rights in Florida's constitution by okaying a referendum to appear on the state ballot this November. But in a separate decision, the court also cleared the way for Florida's six-week abortion ban to take effect in 30 days. Lauren Brenzel, campaign director for Floridians Protecting Freedom, explained the ballot initiative that now heads to voters and how the state's impending six-week abortion ban raises the stakes. The Israeli military on Monday ended its 14-day siege of Al-Shifa, Gaza's largest hospital. The Gazan Health Ministry estimated that about 3,000 people were inside the hospital when the IDF began its raid. Meanwhile, in Israel over the weekend, thousands in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv protested against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And in headlines: A temporary shipping channel opened in the port of Baltimore, former President Donald Trump posted a $175 million dollar bond tied to his civil fraud case in New York, and Iowa defeated LSU and will head to the Final Four of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.Show Notes:What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

He currently lectures in the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at Birzeit University. He has written extensively in Arabic. In English Abboud has contributed to Electronic Intifada, Mondoweiss, and Ebb Magazine among other outlets. We discuss his essay "Bleeding Forms: Beyond the Intifada," which is available open access through Duke University press. We will also talk about recent developments in the US-co-authored zionist genocidal war on Palestinians. Although we would note that because this was recorded a little over a week ago, a few of my comments are not totally current to the most recent developments, but the analysis remains quite relevant nonetheless. We discuss some of the recent developments from the Palestinian resistance which continues to maintain a heroic resistance against the zionist occupation's forces. And of course we touch on the siege on Al Shifa hospital, the full extent of which we revealed yesterday when the IOF retreated from the area. This was our seventh conversation with Abdaljawad Omar since November. Previously we have released a couple of them as audio podcasts, but there are still 4 others that have not been converted yet and all of them are up on a playlist on our Youtube channel that we'll link in the show notes: Also want to note that since October 7th we've also had a few conversations with Dr. Lara Sheehi discussing recent developments from a decolonial psychoanalytic perspective. Over the past six months, Israel has internationally destroyed Gaza's healthcare system as part of its genocidal campaign. By November 2023, Israel had repeatedly bombed more than 36 hospitals in Gaza. As of publishing, the Israeli military has besieged and attacked Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza for over 11 days. Horrifying reports continue to emerge of Israeli soldiers killing Palestinians sheltering inside and abducting medical workers. Additionally, Israel has blocked the entry of food, water, and medical supplies into Gaza, creating an unprecedented public health crisis and famine. At least 27 Palestinians in Gaza have died of malnutrition, 23 of them children. In this episode, host Diana Buttu speaks with Palestinian neurologist Dr. Karameh Hawash-Kuemmerle, about Israel's deliberate destruction of public health in Gaza and its devastating consequences on Palestinians. In 2023, before Israel's current genocide, Dr. Hawash-Kuemmerle co-founded the organization “Doctors Against Genocide,” to address Israel's sharp increase in attacks on Palestinian cities and refugee camps in the West Bank. Israeli military action continues to devastate the civilian population in Gaza. A three-day siege at Al-Shifa hospital is ongoing, though thousands are sheltering there. The IDF claims the site is being used by "senior Hamas terrorists," saying it's killed ninety of them. The bombardment is pushing Gaza towards a devastating humanitarian crisis: A UN-backed organization reports that half of Gaza, more than a million people, is on the brink of catastrophic hunger. 3298 - How Copyright Was Mutated To Benefit Corporations w/ David Bellos

The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2024 70:23

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with David Bellos, professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, to discuss his recent book Who Owns This Sentence?: A History of Copyrights and Wrongs, co-authored with Alexandre Montagu. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's targeting of Al-Shifa hospital, the false UNRWA accusations, Russian elections, US realtors, SCOTUS, the sale of US Steel, the Federal Reserve, and Donald Trump's legal woes, before parsing through objections from US representatives to the continued commitment to Israel's obvious lies about UNRWA. Professor David Bellos then joins, diving right into the contemporary distinctions between patents, trademarks, and the monstrous world of copyright, with the former two requiring applications and reapplications, while copyright allows for extensive, long-term monopoly over intellectual property for both individuals and corporations. After briefly touching on the concept of intellectual property writ large, Professor Bellos steps back to look at the initially parallel histories of patents and copyright, both birthed alongside the creation and dissemination of the printing press in 15th Century Venice to provide a distinction between the limited ownership of newly-authored works and the public domain of older and classical art, also touching on the much longer (and more severe) history of trademarks stretching back through the medieval times. Moving forward, Bellos then walks Sam and Emma through how the evolution of the world of intellectual property over the 18th and 19th Centuries largely took place in Western Europe, with Paris and London leading the way to the 1886 Berne Convention while other Western states like the US seriously lagged, also touching on the lack of ideology or even rationality behind the slow but steady expansion of these rights, before parsing through the US' 180º turn on intellectual property over the 20th Century as they came into their hegemonic station, not only signing onto Berne but forcing anyone who wanted help from the Neoliberal order to do so as well. Following a conversation on the particularly astounding role of employer or corporate ownership over intellectual property, they wrap up the interview with an assessment of IP's role in stifling creativity, how major media companies would react to a complete overhaul of IP law, and what ideal reforms to IP would look like. Sam and Emma also update us on the Aldaghma family's escape from Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Bibi Netanyahu's response to Senator Schumer's call for new Israeli elections, John from San Antonio previews some of the biggest primary races in tomorrow's elections and touches on progressives' failures in California, and the MR Crew parses through the highlights from Donald Trump's insane rally for Bernie Moreno in Ohio – including an appearance from the January 6th Choir, and the differing responses to Trump's “bloodbath” comments and his comments on migrants not being people. Fox works to normalize Trump's actively genocidal rhetoric, Jo Snuffy and Kathy from South Dakota dive into the Biden Administration plan for a temporary aid port in Gaza, and Boeing's controversies grow as a whistleblower is found dead, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam is joined by Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam runs through updates on the passage of a continuing resolution, Israel's blackout of Gaza, mass starvation amid Israel's blockade and bombardment, the UAW's contract, George Santos' reelection bid, Donald Trump's various trial schedules, Florida's drag ban, the Pentagon's audit, the FBI vs. Eric Adams, and US-China relations, before touching on the unsurprising lack of evidence that resulted from Israel's raid on Al Shifa hospital (despite their hand in building the very bunkers they sought). Digby then jumps into the role of the Heritage Foundation in attempting to bolster the agenda of the Trump campaign heading into 2024, seeking to professionalize the administration at a much more prolific level than his previous term, and furthering the fascist takeover of the entire US administrative state, before touching on the particular strains of American fascism. They also parse through updates from the House with Mike Johnson's term coming into full swing, James Comer's meltdown, Nancy Mace's theatrics, and Chip Roy's oddly hollow plea. Wrapping up, they discuss the recent story on AIPAC's planned tsunami of anti-progressive campaign funding, what (if anything) Hakeem Jeffries is prepared to do to protect his party members, and the apt comparison between AIPAC's current role in the DNC and the NRA's former glory within the party. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Fox's The Five dive into the deep conspiracy that gave us “Black Disabled Santa” and “Gay Nutcracker,” Tim Pool “doesn't believe” that he was actually an influence on Paul Pelosi's attacker (so humble), and Josh from New York parses through his own evolution in unlearning the cognitive dissonance of Zionism. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Andy Kroll, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent reporting on Leonard Leo and the new Supreme Court judicial ethics code. Then, they're joined by actor Shaan Sharma, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the tentative agreement reached between the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's raid of Al-Shifa hospital, the pro- and anti-war movements regarding Israel, a government shutdown, the UAW's contract, Starbucks' labor action, New York politics, and Paul Pelosi's attacker, also checking in on the large pro-war rally in D.C. that played host to Van Jones, myriad US Congresspeople, and noted antisemitic Pastor John Hagee. Andy Kroll then joins, first running through some quick background on Leonard Leo, and how he came to completely reshape the Federalist Society into perhaps the most influential legal institution in US politics. Kroll begins with the 1992 Conservative Supreme Court affirming Roe v. Wade in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which ignited an organized spark in the Republican party and saw the founding of the Federalist Society some nine years later, serving to funnel conservative lawyers into judgeships, state offices, and the Supreme Court – provided they completely adhere to the society's strict blueprint for jurisprudence. After parsing through the central strategies of the Society (centered around networking), and how the Democrats were completely blindsided by the Society's rise to judicial dominance in the 21st Century, Kroll, Sam, and Emma dive into Leonard Leo's role as Supreme Court Den Mother, doting on the conservative justices to keep them happy and in line with the Society, as has come to light recently. Wrapping up, they look to the weak response from the Senate Judicial Committee to the myriad SCOTUS corruption charges, and whether the Court's new ethics code will completely sweep this story under the rug. Shaan Sharma then walks Sam and Emma through the structure of SAG-AFTRA's national board, and his role in the organization, before touching on the central elements of the negotiation – namely bringing wages into line with cost-of-living, getting actors residuals from streaming, and appropriate AI protections. Next, Sharma explores where he felt the contract proposal falls short, including health care, self-tape and audition protections, and wage growth, before he, Sam, and Emma wrap up the interview with an assessment of the AI policy, the SAG-AFTRA leadership, and the pressures that brought the end of the strike. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Peter Beinart and Michael A. Cohen's conversation on the 9/11 comparison with Israel's assault on Gaza, watch the families of Israeli hostages march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in protest of Netanyahu's war in Gaza, and parse through the ongoing Daily Wire cat fight between Ben Shapiro and Candace Owens. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP's impending government shutdown, the siege of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, Donald Trump's presidential campaign, the State Department's internal dissent, Bidenomics, and Joe Manchin, before watching Tim Burchett recount a dangerous encounter with Kevin McCarthy. Next, they discuss the Supreme Court's adoption of an ethics “code” as more of an attempt to shirk responsibility for prior unethical conduct than actually impacting Justices' actions moving forward, before watching Donald Trump really let the full fascist out at a rally in New Hampshire, and assess his station in the Republican Party. They also tackle some updates from Gaza, including fighting around Al-Shifa Hospital, and the harrowing images of the 1.6 million displaced Palestinians on the move, before parsing through today's Pro-War rally in D.C., and wrapping up with the late Dr. Hammam Alloh's harrowing reflections from the Al-Shifa hospital just days ago. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam watch Senator Markwayne Mullin attempt to start a fight on the House floor, which Bernie fails to bring to a ceasefire, Fox News begins the War-on-Christmas coverage (and touches on Thanksgiving), and leaked footage of testimony against Trump begins to trickle out. The MR Team also dives into the prevalent role of anti-semites at today's Zionist rally in D.C., plus, your IMs!
