Nessuna parola per i 56mila palestinesi uccisi da ottobre, secondo i dati aggiornati. Nelle stesse ore in cui Netanyahu proclama “una vittoria storica” e l'esercito israeliano dichiara che “ora l'attenzione torna su Gaza”, i droni continuano a sorvolare i centri abitati e le colonne degli aiuti vengono trasformate in trappole mortali. Donald Trump, che si attribuisce il merito della fragile tregua tra Israele e Iran, annuncia “grandi progressi su Gaza”. Intanto gli USA finanziano con 30 milioni di dollari un gruppo sostenuto da Israele per distribuire cibo nella Striscia. È la stessa “distribuzione umanitaria” che ha già provocato morti. L'ONU denuncia la “militarizzazione del cibo”. Gli aiuti sono usati come esche. L'illusione della pace si costruisce con le bombe, mentre le cancellerie occidentali fingono che le vittime siano un effetto collaterale. “Due popoli, due Stati” dice Giorgia Meloni, ma intanto non condanna lo Stato che sta infierendo su un intero popolo. La tregua tra Israele e Iran tiene. Quella tra Israele e Gaza, mai nemmeno iniziata, continua a scricchiolare sotto il peso dei corpi. Chi finge di non vedere, è già complice. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage's landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his reporting from the Democratic National Convention. First, Emma runs through updates on continuing massacres in Gaza, Israel's conflict with Hezbollah, Russia's massive barrage on Ukraine, RFK's candidacy, Jack Smith's case against Trump, fascist disenfranchisement in Texas and Georgia, the UAW, Macron's refusal to name a left-wing PM, Kroger's anti-trust trial, gun violence, and labor action among Canada's freight rails, also touching on the DNC's superspreader status and Trump's attempt to set the rules for the next debate. Alex Sammon then joins, diving right into his review of the four-day-long corporate-sponsored PR convention that was the DNC, and its rejection of the most pressing critiques of the party platform from pro-Palestinian delegates. Expanding on this, Sammon walks through his experience at a self-proclaimed “Zioness” party, a pro-gressive, pro-zionist, and pro-Kamala event, including the advertised speakers (including Senate and Congressional members), none of whom showed, and its incredibly brash yet seemingly ruminative discussion of Israel (no mention of Palestine, of course). After tackling some of the major attendees that did make the event – including Mondaire Jones and Van Jones – Sammon parses through the rhetoric that dominated the event, with little discussion of campaign spending or ongoing lobbying efforts, and a whole lot of talking about how good that Biden administration was for Israel and how great it would be if that continued, often with the implication that such a continuation should not be expected. Sammon wraps up the interview by running through his major conclusions from the event, before Emma covers some major (and majorly concerning) disenfranchisement efforts coming out of Nebraska and Georgia. Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect, to discuss the recent updates on Vice President Harris' economic policy agenda. First, Emma runs through updates on Day 2 of the DNC, escalating protests of the event, abortion on the ballot, polling in North Carolina, the US' hollow ceasefire deal, Israel's indiscriminate slaughter, Ron DeSantis' continuing failures, Arizona's primary, and the FTC non-compete ban, before watching Obama hit Trump where it hurts, and Bernie call out the continuing influence of money in politics. David Dayen then sits down with Sam as they parse through the stark difference in the economic agendas of the Biden and Obama administrations, emphasizing the administrators' role in providing at least a semblance of an economic plan amid crisis (neoliberal bank bailers for Obama, Bernie-Warren social progressives for Biden), and why just having a plan can often put you in a powerful position politically. After an expansive conversation on the compatibility and value of this strain of liberalism with socialist systems and values, McManus wraps up the interview by walking Emma through how a “liberal socialism” would work in the context of the US Constitution, and how it compares to other brands of left politics. Rebecca Burns then looks to Austin as she explores the genesis of the ongoing right-wing war on the houseless as a Trump and Tech-backed legislative backlash to the liberal enclave's attempt to decriminalize homelessness amid a major affordability crisis. Burns next tackles the role of the Cicero Institute, headed by Joe Lonsdale, and Greg Abbott's administration in Texas in pushing a complete turnaround on the city (and state), resulting in the passage of myriad template bills that criminalized encampments, legalized violence against unhoused folks, and completely crippled the services and communities that keep the most marginalized in society afloat, templates that would go on to take root across the US, with major impact even in blue states like California. Sam and Emma speak with David Austin Walsh, postdoctoral associate at the Yale Program for the Study of Antisemitism and college fellow at the University of Virginia, to discuss his recent book Taking America Back: The Conservative Movement and the Far Right. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Harris campaign's momentum, Trump's email problem, the DNC, Ilhan Omar's race, Trump's tough few weeks, Biden's medicare drug price negotiations, consumer protection policy, Israel's continuing genocide in Gaza, Ukraine's counter-invasion, and dropping violent crime rates in 2024, before basking in Trump and Vance's beautifully poor handling of the “weird” allegations. David Austin Walsh then joins, diving right into the major role of one William F. Buckley in shaping American conservatism in the second half of the 20th Century, presenting himself (and all of his bigotry) as the “rational Republican.” Stepping back, Walsh explores how Buckley, the founder of the National Review, came to be the resectable staunch anti-communist and anti-labor aficionado that just happened to have close ties to full-on Neo Nazis, looking at the roles of folks like Merwin Hart, Charles Lindbergh, and Russell Maguire in shaping the more explicitly racist antisemitic strands of Buckley's war on communism, before Barry Goldwater's major loss in 1964 (and the rise of the Civil Rights Movement) saw him begin to push away the electoral risk of rhetorical extremism. Expanding on this, David explores how Buckley's goal of obscuring the bigotry behind the policies of his party became a fundamental element of the conservative political apparatus in the decades that followed, with lines being drawn between the intellectual race science of the Bell Curve and the explicit eugenics of William Shockley, and other major talking heads like Rush Limbaugh and Tucker Carlson becoming media darlings while pushing the line of “respectability” further and further. After briefly touching on the important role of the “crackpot” extremist bigots in Buckley's political charade, Walsh steps back to analyze the role catholicism and theocracy have played in the background of this evolution, and wraps up with a brief assessment of the Right's willing embrace of reactionary populism over recent decades. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deep into reports of the major disarray within the Trump campaign in the wake of Harris replacing Biden on the Democratic ticket, before taking in Dr. Tanya Haj Hassan's reflections on medical care in Gaza and the unmatched horrors facing Palestinians.
