Il problema è che, nella mia esperienza, è quasi sempre chi porta quella frase ad avere la vergogna più radicata. Quella che nel tempo ha smesso di presentarsi come vergogna e ha imparato a presentarsi come durezza, come attacco, come una franchezza che taglia.In questo episodio parliamo di vergogna. Di come si distingue dalla colpa - e la differenza non è sottile, è un abisso. Di come agisce nelle relazioni senza che nessuno la veda. Nel frattempo tuttavia il filosofo del diritto Giampaolo Azzoni, insieme al ministro dell'istruzione italiano Giuseppe Valditara, ha curato un ambizioso Manifesto per l'Occidente. Il fine dichiarato è riconoscere e rilanciare i valori fondanti della nostra civiltà: democrazia, dignità umana, eguaglianza, laicità, libertà, merito, responsabilità, stato di diritto… Dunque un moto di orgoglio e una nuova disposizione di spirito che sembra voler lasciarsi alle spalle una lunga stagione nella quale l'Occidente si è soprattutto interrogato sulle sue colpe storiche, tra cancel culture, critiche woke e post-coloniali. Ma il vincolo che deriva dalla vergogna ci invita a riflettere sui limiti della nozione stessa di individuo: il filo conduttore dei saggi qui raccolti, che affrontano in maniera obliqua un autore, un libro, un'immagine, una frase, addirittura una parola. L'analisi approfondita di casi particolari apre la strada a una serie di generalizzazioni, a risposte che provocano altre domande. Parlare di microstoria, a proposito di questa strategia cognitiva, sembra legittimo: ma i risultati sono più importanti delle etichette. Expanding on this, Sirota walks through how the recommendations found in Powell's memo would be implemented seamlessly over the next few decades, filling attempted congressional reforms with loopholes for corporate backs, and bringing about multiple successful Supreme Court cases (decided, in part, by the now Justice Powell) that would set the stage for the Citizen's United decision's unbridling of corporate spending on elections, before looking at the myriad ways (many obvious) in which this legalized corruption completely undermines democratic governance. After touching on the constant (and, at points, prevalent) backlash to growing corruption in US politics, David and Sam explore the normalization of this corruption to a point beyond complacency, but of a refusal to even call it out, dissecting the hold corporate money has on our elections and what that means for candidates seeking to reform the system, and diving deep into the central role the Supreme Court has played in advancing American conservative agenda as an acting super-legislature. Wrapping up, David briefly assesses Harris' 90-day candidacy, the importance of simplifying your agenda when given such a short window of time, and the state of the Democratic Party in 2024. Then, she speaks with Hal Singer, economics professor at the University of Utah, to discuss some of Kamala Harris' recent economic policy proposals. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's expanding offensive in the West Bank, major polling bumps for Dems, the first Harris/Walz interview, Trump's Q invocation, Trump's would-be assassin, Biden's major victory over drug prices, SCOTUS' continuing attacks on student debt relief, Brazil vs. Elon Musk, Cornell's labor action, and corruption in journalism, before parsing through the overwhelming threat of every type of violence that Palestinians face in the West Bank. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage's landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Expanding on this, Nathaniel contextualizes his time in Masafer Yatta within the villages' history as a supposed “military training zone,” something Israel enacted in the 1980s with the explicit intention to eventually claim said land themselves, something they advanced with decades of allowing settler gangs to roam uninhibited by law and unaccountable for their violence, culminating in Netanyahu's recent decision to completely hand over West Bank rule to settler rule under Smotrich. Next, Jasper walks Sam and Emma through a devastating, first-hand recounting of the violence he witnessed in Masafer Yatta, with a settler's shooting of unarmed teenager Zakaria al-Adra, and the active obstruction and inaction from the Israeli regime in charge of holding said settler accountable, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the pervasiveness and extremity of the settler terror regime. Professor Richard Slotkin then joins, diving right into the concept of the “national myth” as the use of history and narratives of the past to rationalize the present and its ongoing crises. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Matt McManus, political science lecturer at the University of Michigan, to discuss his recent book The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism. Then, she speaks with investigative reporter and journalist Rebecca Burns to discuss her recent piece in In These Times entitled "Inside the Right's War on the Homeless." First, Emma runs through updates on Harris' rollout of her economic plan, the US economy, drug pricing, the VP Debate, RFK's grift-switching, polling, Ukraine's counter-offensive, Columbia University, and Hurricane Ernesto's devastation of Puerto Rico, also diving into JD Vance's continued struggle to do this thing called “campaigning.” Matt McManus then joins, diving right into this attempt to reconcile the systems of liberalism and socialism, first stepping back to unpack some of the less valuable elements of the liberal tradition, largely stemming from emphasis on possessive individualism and “natural” aristocracy, concepts incompatible with the socialist values of equality and solidarity, and working through more progressive conceptions of liberalism, like those of Wollstonecraft, Payne, and Rawls that evangelized concepts of moral equality among humans and saw economic inequality as a fundamental issue, inspiring some of the most important and influential revolutions in history, and challenging the ideas of meritocracy and aristocracy. After an expansive conversation on the compatibility and value of this strain of liberalism with socialist systems and values, McManus wraps up the interview by walking Emma through how a “liberal socialism” would work in the context of the US Constitution, and how it compares to other brands of left politics. Rebecca Burns then looks to Austin as she explores the genesis of the ongoing right-wing war on the houseless as a Trump and Tech-backed legislative backlash to the liberal enclave's attempt to decriminalize homelessness amid a major affordability crisis. Burns next tackles the role of the Cicero Institute, headed by Joe Lonsdale, and Greg Abbott's administration in Texas in pushing a complete turnaround on the city (and state), resulting in the passage of myriad template bills that criminalized encampments, legalized violence against unhoused folks, and completely crippled the services and communities that keep the most marginalized in society afloat, templates that would go on to take root across the US, with major impact even in blue states like California. After expanding on the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the constitutionality of criminalizing the homeless without first providing a remedy, Burns wraps up with an assessment of the futile cruelty of police crackdowns on the homeless.
