È un operatore umanitario, un cittadino italiano trattenuto in Venezuela mentre svolgeva il suo lavoro. Eppure, l'Italia ufficiale si muove con la lentezza burocratica di chi ha sempre qualcos'altro di più urgente da fare. Le lettere restano in attesa di una risposta, le richieste diplomatiche si perdono nei corridoi di ministeri e ambasciate. E mentre la politica esita, il tempo scava ferite. “Giorgia Meloni è una madre, e lo sa”, scrive Armanda Trentini. Ma essere madre non è un titolo onorifico, è una responsabilità. E governare non significa strumentalizzare i confini, ma anche difendere chi, fuori da quei confini, incarna la parte migliore del nostro Paese. Un governo che si proclama patriottico non può abbandonare un suo cittadino, un suo figlio, in un limbo diplomatico che rischia di diventare condanna. Spesso associamo il concetto di potere al dominio sugli altri, ma in realtà il potere è sinonimo di possibilità, di capacità: io posso. Eppure, ciò che ci spaventa è riconoscere che siamo un centro di influenza nel nostro mondo, che le nostre azioni possono cambiarlo.Perché temiamo la nostra luce?Le radici di questa paura risiedono nei messaggi ricevuti durante l'infanzia. Meloni che doveva perseguire i trafficanti di esseri umani per tutto il globo terracqueo riaccompagna a casa uno dei peggiori aguzzini di Tripoli.

E il lettore fa un balzo sulla sedia. Se Amnesty International, dunque la più autorevole ong internazionale per la difesa dei diritti umani, è giunta anch'essa a questa conclusione, dopo il mandato di cattura per Netanyahu e Gallant spiccato dalla Corte penale internazionale, dopo il processo per genocidio indetto dalla Corte internazionale di giustizia, dopo che Papa Francesco ha pubblicamente scritto che Israele sta probabilmente compiendo un genocidio... beh, verrebbe da pensare proprio che ci sia un serio sospetto di genocidio a Gaza, commesso da Israele? O no? I pochi filo-sionisti rimasti devono arrendersi a questa "evidenza"? Neanche per idea.Prima di tutto, bisogna leggere il rapporto di Amnesty International prima di capire di cosa stiamo parlando. E bisogna anche, prima ancora di leggerlo, ricordare bene cosa significhi la parola "genocidio" così come è stata formulata da Raphael Lemkin, giurista ebreo polacco, nel 1944, alla vigilia della sconfitta della più grande potenza genocida europea, la Germania nazista.Ebbene, il genocidio è: "piano coordinato di differenti azioni mirante alla distruzione dei fondamenti essenziali della vita di gruppi nazionali, con l'intento di annientarli". Per Amnesty International, Israele sta agendo con l'intento dichiarato di eliminare il popolo palestinese a Gaza. Poi però nel suo stesso rapporto si contraddice più e più volte.Prima di tutto, il documento parla di una "distruzione senza precedenti", ma per le stime su morti e feriti e quanti di essi siano non combattenti si basa solo sulle cifre fornite dai palestinesi. Cioè da Hamas, che è l'unica organizzazione terrorista internazionale che ha il controllo di Gaza e che diffonde informazioni per fare propaganda.I NUMERIStando all'Onu i morti accertati sono 8119, come abbiamo già avuto modo di scrivere su queste colonne. Poco più di 8 mila morti sono una tragedia, ma su una popolazione di oltre 2 milioni di palestinesi sono un genocidio ben strano. Un "genocidio a bassa intensità" si potrebbe dire. Lo sarebbe anche se prendessimo per buone le statistiche di Hamas, che per altro sono del tutto implausibili, se non altro perché progrediscono con una regolarità disarmante, nei periodi di tregua come in quelli di escalation.Ma anche 42 mila morti, su 2 milioni di abitanti di Gaza non sono troppo rivelatori di un intento genocida. Il ritmo con cui una popolazione viene eliminata è una caratteristica indicativa di un genocidio in corso. Gli armeni subirono un milione di morti in poco più di un anno, lo stesso lasso di tempo in cui gli israeliani avrebbero ucciso (stando a Hamas, ripetiamolo) nemmeno 50 mila palestinesi.I nazisti eliminarono fisicamente 6 milioni di ebrei in Europa dal 1939 al 1945, circa 1 milione all'anno facendo la media, ma considerando soprattutto che il grosso venne eliminato solo dal giugno 1941 (occupazione dell'Urss occidentale) al gennaio del 1945 (liberazione dei primi campi di sterminio). In Ruanda, gli hutu sterminarono l'etnia tutsi al ritmo di 200 mila morti a settimana, arrivando a 1 milione di vittime in poco più di un mese. La conta dei morti è macabra, d'accordo, non ci sono sicuramente vittime di serie A o di serie B, ma serve a capire, per lo meno, le dimensioni del problema e di cosa stiamo parlando.Prevenendo la critica sui numeri, Amnesty afferma che comunque Israele sta negando alla popolazione di Gaza tutti i mezzi che le permettono di vivere (cibo, acqua, energia, ospedali) e tutti i suoi siti culturali e religiosi (scuole, moschee, centri culturali). Però poi non spiega cosa ci facciano quelle file di camion che portano aiuti alimentari ai palestinesi (anche e soprattutto dal territorio israeliano) e come mai, dopo un anno e due mesi di guerra, non sia ancora scoppiata una carestia.Anche i rapporti più allarmanti parlano di "rischio carestia", ma non è documentata alcuna mortalità di massa per fame e stenti, come avverrebbe in una carestia. Per una carestia indotta artificialmente, come quella in Ucraina nel 1932-33, morirono dai 4 ai 7 milioni di contadini, più del 10-15 per cento della popolazione di allora. Non si vede nulla di simile a Gaza, nemmeno stando ai rapporti più allarmanti.Quanto alla distruzione dei simboli e siti della cultura palestinese, Amnesty dimentica di dirci come vengano usate le moschee e le scuole che vengono colpite dagli israeliani. D'altronde, forte della sua imparzialità, sicuramente non crede alle "fonti di parte", cioè ai video con cui l'esercito israeliano mostra le armi catturate al loro interno, o i terroristi uccisi nei raid contro di esse. Hamas, se usa scudi umani e utilizza ospedali, scuole e moschee per lanciare i suoi attacchi o mettere al riparo i suoi comandanti, non è da considerarsi colpevole di crimini di guerra?NESSUN INTENTO GENOCIDA: TRE ERRORI IN UNA FRASEInfine, ma non da ultimo, un genocidio è un'azione deliberata. Gli israeliani vogliono deliberatamente eliminare (del tutto o in parte) la popolazione di Gaza? Non c'è traccia di alcun ordine di questo tipo. Non ci sono neppure i sintomi tipici di un genocidio o di una pulizia etnica, come tante volte abbiamo visto, ad esempio, nei Balcani: campi di filtraggio, deportazioni, rastrellamenti e uccisioni deliberate di tutti coloro che hanno il passaporto sbagliato, il cognome sbagliato, o frequentano la parrocchia sbagliata. Ecco, non si vede nulla di tutto questo, né i campi, né le colonne di deportati, né le fosse comuni piene di civili.Israele afferma di combattere una guerra contro i terroristi e di fare tutto il possibile per evacuare i civili nelle zone in cui l'esercito colpisce. Ebbene, Amnesty accusa Israele anche di queste evacuazioni, denunciandole come "deportazioni". Come "prova" dell'intento genocida, cita qualche scatenato di destra, minoritario nel governo Netanyahu, con ragionamenti del tipo "non fornire aiuti umanitari a Gaza finché Hamas non libera tutti gli ostaggi".Ragionamento che non indica alcun intento genocida, per altro. E che è una politica neppure seguita dal governo, visto che gli aiuti umanitari continuano ad arrivare a Gaza, ma un centinaio di ostaggi ancora vivi sono nelle mani di Hamas fino ad oggi.Il rapporto di Amnesty International, insomma, giunge alla conclusione che è in corso un genocidio, perché quel che sta avvenendo a Gaza è inserito in un "contesto" (parola magica) genocidario. E quale sarebbe questo "contesto"? Citiamo testualmente: "Nel contesto del sistema di apartheid di Israele, del blocco disumano di Gaza e dell'occupazione militare illegale del territorio palestinese che dura da 57 anni". Già il numero di aggettivi (disumano, militare, illegale) dovrebbe far suonare un campanello di allarme sulla serietà di questa analisi.Ma in una frase troviamo tre errori da matita blu. Sistema di apartheid: un paese multi-etnico in cui un arabo è membro della Corte Suprema e può anche condannare il premier ebreo? Occupazione militare illegale del territorio palestinese: quale territorio palestinese, considerando che nessuno Stato di Palestina è mai stato riconosciuto? I territori contesi fino al 1967 erano a loro volta occupati da Egitto (Gaza) e Giordania (Cisgiordania) e anche la loro presenza militare su quegli stessi luoghi era illegale, per il diritto internazionale. Quindi chi è l'occupante e chi il liberatore? Il blocco inumano di Gaza: Israele dovrebbe aprire le frontiere di una regione da cui partono razzi e attacchi terroristici tutti gli anni, dove un'organizzazione terrorista internazionale regna sovrana?Insomma, il rapporto di Amnesty serve a un solo scopo: delegittimare Israele con frasi e dati ad effetto. Ma l'unico scopo che otterrà, almeno per i governi che ancora ragionano, sarà quello di screditare se stessa. Da autorevole organizzazione per i diritti umani, è diventata un'organizzazione militante di estrema sinistra.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with David Sirota, founder and editor-in-chief of The Lever, and host of its new investigative podcast Master Plan. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage's landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win. Alex Sammon then joins, diving right into his review of the four-day-long corporate-sponsored PR convention that was the DNC, and its rejection of the most pressing critiques of the party platform from pro-Palestinian delegates. Expanding on this, Sammon walks through his experience at a self-proclaimed “Zioness” party, a pro-gressive, pro-zionist, and pro-Kamala event, including the advertised speakers (including Senate and Congressional members), none of whom showed, and its incredibly brash yet seemingly ruminative discussion of Israel (no mention of Palestine, of course). It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Jasper Nathaniel, writer of the Infinite Jaz newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent reporting from the West Bank. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Day 1 of the DNC (and the protests it was met with), Blinken's pseudo-ceasefire, Dems' economic agenda, Elon's Twitter flop, the legal woes of Bob Menendez and George Santos, and Mexico's judiciary, before parsing through Shawn Fain's fantastic performance at the DNC, and the stark differences between AOC's disappointing “reference” to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and Warnock's willingness to call out (even with both-sidesism) the mass deaths. Jasper Nathaniel then joins, diving right into how the complete appropriation of the Genocide in Gaza for domestic culture war purposes in the US pushed him to go to the West Bank for a more grounded approach to covering this one-sided conflict, tackling his level of understanding about Israeli apartheid and settler violence before his arrival, and how that was sharply upended when he was met with a constant and totalistic pervasion of cruelty and terror, be it from soldier or settler, enacted upon the Palestinian populations in the West Bank. Expanding on this, Nathaniel contextualizes his time in Masafer Yatta within the villages' history as a supposed “military training zone,” something Israel enacted in the 1980s with the explicit intention to eventually claim said land themselves, something they advanced with decades of allowing settler gangs to roam uninhibited by law and unaccountable for their violence, culminating in Netanyahu's recent decision to completely hand over West Bank rule to settler rule under Smotrich. Next, Jasper walks Sam and Emma through a devastating, first-hand recounting of the violence he witnessed in Masafer Yatta, with a settler's shooting of unarmed teenager Zakaria al-Adra, and the active obstruction and inaction from the Israeli regime in charge of holding said settler accountable, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the pervasiveness and extremity of the settler terror regime. Sam and Emma speak with Richard Slotkin, cultural critic and historian, professor of English and American Studies at Wesleyan University, to discuss his recent book A Great Disorder: National Myth and the Battle for America. First, they run through updates on day one of the DNC, Harris' candidacy, Donald Trump's ongoing meltdown, Iran-Israel conflict, anti-trust, labor action, SCOTUS' stance on trans rights, COVID infection rates, and pro-Palestine protest, before diving into the role Palestinian and pro-Palestinian perspectives will play at the DNC. Professor Richard Slotkin then joins, diving right into the concept of the “national myth” as the use of history and narratives of the past to rationalize the present and its ongoing crises. Expanding on this, Professor Slotkin walks through the role of social and economic insecurity in spurring the need to make sense of a moment, before stepping back to touch on how malleable these mythologies can be, with the same stories often taking on multiple perspectives that can be used and presented differently to affirm various, frequently conflicting, contemporary ideologies, parsing through the various myths of the American Revolution, Civil War, and the “Good War: (WWII), and how they have been employed throughout history. After an expansive conversation on the compatibility and value of this strain of liberalism with socialist systems and values, McManus wraps up the interview by walking Emma through how a “liberal socialism” would work in the context of the US Constitution, and how it compares to other brands of left politics. Rebecca Burns then looks to Austin as she explores the genesis of the ongoing right-wing war on the houseless as a Trump and Tech-backed legislative backlash to the liberal enclave's attempt to decriminalize homelessness amid a major affordability crisis. Burns next tackles the role of the Cicero Institute, headed by Joe Lonsdale, and Greg Abbott's administration in Texas in pushing a complete turnaround on the city (and state), resulting in the passage of myriad template bills that criminalized encampments, legalized violence against unhoused folks, and completely crippled the services and communities that keep the most marginalized in society afloat, templates that would go on to take root across the US, with major impact even in blue states like California. David Austin Walsh then joins, diving right into the major role of one William F. Buckley in shaping American conservatism in the second half of the 20th Century, presenting himself (and all of his bigotry) as the “rational Republican.” Stepping back, Walsh explores how Buckley, the founder of the National Review, came to be the resectable staunch anti-communist and anti-labor aficionado that just happened to have close ties to full-on Neo Nazis, looking at the roles of folks like Merwin Hart, Charles Lindbergh, and Russell Maguire in shaping the more explicitly racist antisemitic strands of Buckley's war on communism, before Barry Goldwater's major loss in 1964 (and the rise of the Civil Rights Movement) saw him begin to push away the electoral risk of rhetorical extremism.
