The International People's Tribunal on US Imperialism: Sanctions, Blockades and Economic Coercive Measures condemns the Israeli assassination of Yasser Adnan Ibrahim al-Derawi, 31 year old attorney from Gaza, Palestine. He served as an expert witness in our Gaza hearing on May 13, 2023. We recently learned of Yasser's murder after local journalists searched for him to discuss his research on the Israeli blockade and other war crimes in Gaza, Palestine. They informed us that Yasser was targeted during an Israeli bombing campaign of his home in December 2023, following a series of letters he sent to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in collaboration with the Center for the Protection of Human Rights documenting Israeli war crimes in Palestine and Gaza specifically. He testified before the International People's Tribunal (@sanctionstribunal) during the fifth day of an active Israeli bombardment campaign against Gaza. Two witnesses left the hearing abruptly because the homes near them were being bombed as they testified. In the morning of Yasser's testimony, he attended a fact-gathering meeting at Al-Shifa Hospital, which has since been completely destroyed by the Israelis and is described by the World Health Organization as “an empty shell with human graves.” He explained that this meeting was to document Israeli atrocities committed during the May 2023 bombardment. In his powerful testimony before the Tribunal, he stated repeatedly that the “Israelis don't distinguish between women, children, elderly. They kill all civilians without distinguishing between targets. They declare war on civilians, targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.” He noted the use of internationally banned weapons and cited multiple violations of international law, including Article 33 of the Geneva Convention. He stated that the Israeli objective is to “destroy the Palestinian will to resist and live.” Yasser was keenly aware of the US role in perpetrating war crimes against Palestinians and the people of Gaza. He noted that the Israelis cannot make any decisions unless they get an agreement from Washington DC, and that just two days prior, the US blocked the condemnation of Israel before the Security Council. “We call it the United States of imperialism, that's what supports the Israelis.” Yasser concluded his testimony with the following statement: “We join this Tribunal with the hope that we can prosecute the apartheid regime of Israel. We are ready to present any evidence that you want us to provide to document and show the crimes of the Zionist occupation in Gaza…. We've asked multiple times for the International Criminal Court to open an investigation into these crimes, but the Court is slow to respond.” The People's Tribunal on US imperialism understands that international institutions such as the ICC are rooted in legacies of colonialism and shaped by the diktats of US imperialism, which materially and politically supports the settler colonial state of Israel as its imperial outpost. This has undermined the international community's ability to take the action needed–action Yasser so powerfully called for in his testimony–to prevent the genocide currently underway in Gaza. Had the world heeded the calls of Yasser and other Palestinians, we could have prevented the deaths of over 186,000 Palestinians and the extensive destruction and waste of life, land and infrastructure produced by this imperialist-zionist assault on the Palestinian people. Despite its limitations, Yasser was committed to working within the framework of international law. He held a Masters degree in Public Law and his dissertation was entitled “The Powers of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.” At the time of his assassination, he was attending a doctoral program in International Criminal Law, and had participated in numerous conferences advocating for Palestinian liberation. He was actively training to participate in prosecuting Israel in international legal fora and was a member of the War Crimes Protection Committee of the Center for the Protection of Human Rights. Yasser is survived by his wife and children. We send our profound condolences to his family during this unimaginable time of grief. In addition to this personal loss, we understand Yasser's martyrdom as a loss for the Palestinian national liberation movement, as well as for the international community of anti-imperialist lawyers. The best way we can honor Yasser is to continue his fight for justice and accountability for Zionist crimes and for the liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea. https://solidarityiran.org/2024/08/20/israel-assassinates-sanctions-tribunal-expert-witness-in-gaza/ https://sanctionstribunal.org/

*) UN raises 'war crime' alert as 300+ bodies are found in Gaza mass graves Reports of mass graves found in Gaza over the weekend at Nasser Hospital and Al Shifa Hospital have prompted renewed concerns about possible war crimes by Israel. Some of the Palestinian victims were found stripped naked with their hands tied, according to the UN. UN rights chief Volker Turk said "the intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others who are hors de combat is a war crime.” *) US Senate overwhelmingly passes $26.6B military aid for Israel Meanwhile, the US Senate has passed a $26.6 billion military package for Israel, the American ally accused of carrying out genocide in Gaza using US weapons. US President Joe Biden pledged to quickly sign the $61 billion bill — which also includes aid packages for Ukraine and Taiwan — after Congress gave its final approval. Israel's war on Gaza, now in its 201st day, has killed at least 34,183 Palestinians — 70 percent of them children and women. *) Malaysian navy helicopters collide, killing all crew aboard Two Malaysian navy helicopters have collided in mid-air during a rehearsal for a naval parade, killing all 10 crew members aboard. The incident occurred at the Lumut naval base in the western state of Perak on Tuesday morning, the navy said. All victims were confirmed dead at the scene and sent to the military hospital for identification, the navy said. *) North Korea officials embark on rare public visit to Iran A North Korean delegation is visiting Iran, the North's official media has said in a rare public report of an exchange between the two countries believed to have secret military ties. The minister for external economic relations, Yun Jong-ho, left Pyongyang on Tuesday by air leading a ministry delegation to visit Iran, the North's KCNA news agency said. It gave no other detail. *) Human rights groups slam UK Rwanda plan after Parliament approves bill The UK's plans to send some asylum-seekers to Rwanda has been swiftly condemned by international humanitarian organisations. This comes after Parliament approved legislation allowing the deportation flights to begin later this year. Both the UN refugee agency and the Council of Europe called for the UK to rethink its plans because of concerns that the legislation undermines human rights protections.
When the Israeli military left the al-Shifa Hospital complex earlier this month, Gaza's largest medical facility was left in ruins. International medical and aid groups declared it completely destroyed and totally non-operational. Shortly after, stories began to emerge of the horrors those inside the facility experienced at the hands of the Israeli military. Tareq Hajjaj, our Gaza Correspondent, collected eyewitness accounts of the deadly siege. He joined Yumna Patel, our Palestine News Director, to discuss the al-Shifa Hospital, as well as his reporting on what Palestinians are finding when they venture back to Gaza's central and northern areas. Israeli forces killed several Palestinians trying to return to their homes over the past few days. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. *) Mass grave found at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza Al Jazeera Arabic has reported that a mass grave at Al Shifa Hospital was discovered by the Palestinian Health Ministry and Civil Defence Forces in Gaza. The extracted bodies had not fully decomposed, suggesting that the 'executions' took place recently, possibly during Israel's two-week military invasion. The Gaza Emergency Operations Centre Director Motasem Salah said the World Health Organization and OCHA are trying "to identify the decomposed bodies and the body parts that were crushed" from their wallets and documents. *) Israeli war cabinet divided over response to Iran attack Following Iran's retaliatory strike against Israel on Saturday, Israel's Channel 12 reported that “There is consensus on the necessity of responding to the Iranian attack, but disagreements revolve around the scale and timing of the response.” The broadcaster noted that some in the war cabinet advocate for an immediate 'eye for an eye' approach, while others emphasise the importance of strategic planning for a robust response. *) What unfolded on Day 1 of Donald Trump's historic hush money trial Donald Trump has entered history as the first American president to stand trial on criminal charges. The Republican presidential candidate for the upcoming elections faces charges of falsifying business records to conceal "hush money" payments at the height of the 2016 presidential election. Since the October 7th Hamas attacks and the subsequent Israeli military assault on Gaza, many prominent “free speech warriors” on the right have exposed themselves as no different from the censorship-crazed “Woke” left they ridicule and excoriate. Most recently Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin sat down to explain away how it was OK for Shapiro's Daily Wire to part ways with Candace Owens over the latter's comments critical of Israel. Guest host Russell Dobular and his Due Dissidence co-host Keaton Weiss discuss this incredible ass-showing from Shapiro and Rubin. Plus segments on Joe Biden being accused of desecrating the Easter holiday by celebrating trans visibility, Israel escalating the conflict in the Middle East by bombing Iran's embassy in Damascus, Syria, and the Israel Defense Force pulling out of Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital, leaving a trail of destruction and dead civilians in their wake. Over the past six months, Israel has internationally destroyed Gaza's healthcare system as part of its genocidal campaign. By November 2023, Israel had repeatedly bombed more than 36 hospitals in Gaza. As of publishing, the Israeli military has besieged and attacked Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza for over 11 days. Horrifying reports continue to emerge of Israeli soldiers killing Palestinians sheltering inside and abducting medical workers. Additionally, Israel has blocked the entry of food, water, and medical supplies into Gaza, creating an unprecedented public health crisis and famine. At least 27 Palestinians in Gaza have died of malnutrition, 23 of them children. In this episode, host Diana Buttu speaks with Palestinian neurologist Dr. Karameh Hawash-Kuemmerle, about Israel's deliberate destruction of public health in Gaza and its devastating consequences on Palestinians. In 2023, before Israel's current genocide, Dr. Hawash-Kuemmerle co-founded the organization “Doctors Against Genocide,” to address Israel's sharp increase in attacks on Palestinian cities and refugee camps in the West Bank. Once Israel began its brutal campaign in Gaza, it became clear the organization and her work were needed more than ever. Thank you for listening to 'This is Palestine'! It's Hump Day! First, in a pre-taped conversation, Sam speaks with Seth Goldstein, legal counsel for Trader Joe's United & the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), to discuss a recent legal filing by Amazon, Trader Joe's, and SpaceX that alleges that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is unconstitutional. Then, Emma speaks with Dr. Tarek Loubani, associate professor at the University of Western Ontario and leader of the Glia Project, to discuss what is happening on the ground now that hospitals in Gaza are mostly non-operational. First, Emma runs through updates on the US vetoing a UN ceasefire resolution for the THIRD time, Gaza's dire situation, Ukrainian troops, US sanctions on Russia, Trump's legal woes, the FBI's Biden Informant and his foreign connections, SCOTUS attacks, student debt, Starbucks unions, and the murder of a nonbinary child in Oklahoma, before watching Nikki Haley put on her best Hillary Clinton pants(uit) and accuse Trump of Russia-connected authoritarianism. Then, Sam is joined by Sam Goldstein as they dive into the evolution of the legal attacks on the NLRB, beginning with Amazon's objections to the NLRB's role in the Amazon Labor Union elections of 2022, and seeing Elon Musk file suit against the NLRB's constitutionality in the wake of a decision against SpaceX. Next, Goldstein steps back, walking through the establishment of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935 as an attempt to institutionalize the conflict between labor and management in an attempt to somewhat protect workers' rights, and the near-nonexistent changes in its management (outside of the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act) over the following eight decades, despite the overwhelming changes to the labor market with the rise of Tech and the gig economy. After tackling the history of challenges to its unconstitutionality, Seth walks Sam through the three major planks of SpaceX's case – namely: the requirement of good cause for Presidents to remove NLRB judges, the Seventh Amendment right to a jury, and the Board's combination of legislative, judicial, and executive powers. Exploring each point, Goldstein tackles the absurdity of each point within the broader operations of the US government, and the devastating impact the case could have on both the NLRB and the administrative state writ large. After discussing SpaceX's attempt to keep this legal battle in Texas, Goldstein wraps up with Trader Joe's similar case coming out of Connecticut, the threat IT poses to the NLRB, and what to expect moving forward. Dr. Tarek Loubani then joins, first parsing through his experience doing humanitarian and medical work in Gaza over the last decade, and touching on his experiences during Gaza's Great March of Return in 2018, which saw thousands of Gazans shot during peaceful and civil demonstrations against their conditions, including Dr. Loubani himself. Next, Loubani assesses the complete devastation of Gaza's medical care during Israel's ongoing ethnic cleansing of the region, with Israel's active attacks on both medical institutions and medical personnel setting a new standard for depraved warfare, also exploring the harrowing and devastating realities of genocide and apartheid on the ground, from both a medical and broader perspective. Tarek also discusses his experiences at Al-Shifa Hospital, and unpacks the insane claim that Hamas could operate its military out of overpacked and overwhelmed medical centers, before wrapping up by addressing the active culpability and complicity of the West and the need to hold our politicians accountable.
