In This Episode Globetrotter and Host Brett King shares banking news and investment conversations from around the world We start today's podcast on banking with Brett's one on one discussion on tech in Thailand with Dr. Supachai Kid Parchariyanon. Dr. Kid is CEO and Co-Founder of consulting company Rise, and managing partner for SeaX Ventures, a Thai venture capital firm with presence in Silicon Valley. Rise's company goal is to drive 1% of the GDP in Thailand as well as reduce 1% of carbon emissions in all of Southeast Asia. Earlier in his career, Dr. Kid was a key figure responsible for bringing the social media app Twitter (now known as X) to Thailand, it was a technical challenge, and one that had legal barriers as well. Later, he and his team were also able to code software for the Nokia phone, creating in his words a “Robin Hood-like app” for Thailand. He speaks to us today about the Thai tech scene, what's happening in fintech and the VC world, and specifically what's helping drive the Thai economy -- from fintech to health tourism to the Thai lifestyle movement and digital nomad visas, the conversation is wide-ranging as this small country slowly recovers from covid and faces demographic headwinds. With an aging society they are looking to attract new talent and people to the country, collaborate not compete and expand investment in deep tech, AI, agritech, medical, and tourism tech. Then, from the 24 Fintech Conference in Saudi Arabia, Brett introduces us to Saudi Arabia's Barq, making headlines around the region and other parts of the world, as he sits down with its Chief Business Officer, Saad Almuhana. Barq is the newest and fastest growing private wallet and challenger bank in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East and potentially the world, having garnered 1.5M customers in 35 days -- having hit the amazing milestone of 1M customers in 21 days. In Saudi Arabia, younger people represent 70% of the population, tech savvy, mobile banking is very successful in the Kingdom with mobile penetration off the charts. Consumer appetite is high for help with finances in a quick manner. Remittance is a big part of Barq's offering, assuring customers that the optimal rail is selected at the right time for payment transactions. The journey started August 2024 with an EMI license (e-money), expansion plans are already in the works. In their second month, Barq is enhancing service offerings through multiple partnerships and hoping to hit 2M customers. If the evolution of the fintech is such, they have the option to upgrade to a full bank. It's an interesting and unique journey, one of incredible growth. But......one last thing before you listen to the latest episode of our financial podcast,,,,you know what season it is? Not just pumpkin spice, it's conference season and there is a new show to add to your list. The AI-Native Banking & Fintech Conference is happening October 7 in Salt Lake City and Breaking Banks is proud to be a media partner. Welcome back to Not Fintech Investment Advice, where Simon Taylor and I spotlight new and exciting fintechs, minus the stock tips. First up is Agree. If DocuSign and Stripe had a Gen AI-powered baby, it'd be the e-signature platform Agree. It blends free agreement software with paid invoicing and payments (merging 2 trends: AI-driven law tech with AI-driven finance workflows). Why juggle invoices and contracts when you can reconcile both in one platform? Is this the next big thing in regtech? Next, they dive into Revenew, an all-in-one payment optimization platform for platforms and marketplaces. The platform consolidates payments from various PSPs, tracks metrics and multiple providers to help ramp up profitability. As startups gravitate towards all-in-one solutions and larger firms go modular, where will the future of payment orchestration take us? Simon, fresh from the Saudi desert, spotlights Barq, a Saudi digital wallet that achieved 1M customers in just 21 days, making it the fastest-growing neobank outside China (sorry, Revolut). It's easy to dismiss Barq as a government white elephant, but Simon challenges that notion. Lastly, they mourn Tally (RIP), a fintech that helped users pay down credit card debt—a problem still surging in the US, and now at an all-time high. Was Tally's pivot from B2C to B2B before shutting down too little, too late, or was distribution the real issue? Plus, they're manifesting a fintech future where data infrastructure is collaborative. Why is it single-player by default for companies like Plaid or MX, and how might a multiplayer model transform the landscape? Raising the standard of quality for embedded finance infrastructure, Newline™ by Fifth Third is an API platform that enables enterprises to launch and scale payment, card and deposit products directly with Fifth Third Bank. DOLE Whip Now Has its Own Disney Day of CelebrationFun Facts About Dole WhipDole Whip is a soft-serve dairy free and gluten free frozen dessert created by the Dole Food Company in 1984. Since 2013 it has been fully vegan. It first appeared as an attraction in the Disneyland Enchanted Tiki Room. According to the official Dole website, a 2/3 cup serving of Dole Whip contains 110 calories and 25-27 carbs (depending on the flavor). Remember, the make-at-home Dole Whip recipe that Disney published in 2020 during lockdown is not the real Dole Whip recipe. The real one is made with powder from Dole, plus water and the machine that combines the two into frozen goodness. Dole Whip used to be somewhat exclusive and very much a Disney thing to many people, but that's now changed and you can get official Dole Whip in more and more places outside of Disney Parks -- including our local movie theatre in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.Dole Whip Day is officially July 21, but the Dole Whip flavor extravaganza will continue through July 24. Going forward Disney plans to hold Dole Whip Day on the third Thursday in July – so if you want to plan your WDW vacation around Dole Whip, you now know which dates to book.Walt Disney World Resort Magic Kingdom Park Aloha Isle (Located in Adventureland) Pineapple Float: DOLE pineapple juice served with a choice of DOLE Whip, vanilla soft-serve, or swirl (available with Tiki Sipper for additional cost) Raspberry Swirl Float: DOLE Whip and raspberry swirl served with DOLE pineapple juice Pineapple Upside-Down Cake served with choice of DOLE Whip, vanilla soft-serve, or swirl DOLE Whip Cup: Choice of DOLE Whip, vanilla soft-serve, or swirl Coconut Cup: Choice of coconut or coconut and DOLE Whip swirl Raspberry Swirl Cup: DOLE Whip and raspberry swirl Storybook Treats (Located in Fantasyland) Soft-serve Cup: DOLE Whip lime, chocolate, or vanilla soft-serve, or swirl in a cup Snow White Cone: DOLE Whip lemon in a blue cone garnished with a chocolate bird and sugar bow Sunshine Tree Terrace (Located in Adventureland; We also talk about what it's like to choose the camera when the oppressor uses a gun.

Haunted Vending Machinehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Hill's_mystery_soda_machinehttps://www.atlasobscura.com/places/mystery-soda-machineInspired by the talk about Bananas and how that supply chain workedCapitol Hill's mystery soda machine was a vending machine in Capitol Hill, SeattleDensely populated residential district just east of Seattle's downtown business district.known for counterculture communities and vibrant nightlifehome to some of the city's most prominent local coffeehouses. David Schomer's Espresso Vivace on Broadway credited as birthplace of artisanal coffee culture and latte art in Seattle (and thus the United States)associated with the grunge scene from the early 1990s, although most of the best-known music venues of that era were actually located slightly outside the neighborhoodAlso CHAZ and CHOP in 2020 Protests after the murder of George Floydin operation since at least the early 1990s until its disappearance in 2018.It is unknown who stocked the machineA drink could be chosen using one of the "? mystery ?" buttons and the dispensed drinks were rare cans that were either ordinarily unavailable in the United States or have not been in circulation since the 1980s.It has been reported that Lemon-Lime Slice, Pepsi AM, bubblegum-flavored Hubba Bubba Soda, and the infamous Crystal Pepsi could be acquired from the machine — although I have no documented evidenceLemon-Lime Slice was replaced in the PepsiCo lineup by Sierra Mist in 2000Pepsi AM existed only briefly as a test between 1989 and 1990 and was removed from shelves after failing to take offHubba Bubba Soda launched in 1987 before fading into obscurity by the 1990sCrystal Pepsi flopped spectacularly in the early 1990s.)For much of the machine's lifetime, the majority of its buttons — at least four of the six — dispensed specific sodas, with only one or two of the buttons bearing the “?MYSTERY?” label. For example, in October of 2002, The Stranger reported that five of the buttons at the time dispensed particular sodas — namely Coca-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7 Up, Barq's Root Beer, and Pepsi — while just one offered the “?MYSTERY?” option. Photos taken during the summer and fall of 2009, however, show that by that point, only four of the buttons dispensed identifiable sodas — two spat out cans of Coke, one Mountain Dew, and one Pepsi — while the “?MYSTERY?” buttons had grown to two.By 2014 all of the buttons were MysteryMysteryhttps://www.vice.com/en/article/kwpzxe/seattle-has-a-haunted-soda-machineNot only was each button labeled Mystery, but the machine itself was shrouded in it.2014 Interview with Vice, Mickey manager of Broadway Locksmith“I've honestly never seen anyone open it,”“Do people get soda out of it frequently?” I ask him“Oh yeah, all the time. All day long,”“ And yet in a decade-and-a-half, you've never seen anyone tampering with it or refilling it?” I asked.“Nope, He must come in the middle of the night on a weekend or something.”Or, as our theory states, the soda emissary could be a restless, undead spirit able to transcend the laws of space-time in order to supply an endless assortment of carbonated drinks.https://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2018/07/the-bizarre-story-of-the-seattle-mystery-vending-machine/Curiously, despite being targeted by countless vandals and irate customers over the years (the machine has a propensity to eat bills particularly, but also sometimes change), Seattle residents familiar with it note it's almost never out of service and report that any time the machine is damaged, it is generally fixed within a day or so.A common hypothesis is that the machine is owned and operated by the owners of Broadway Locksmith, which the machine is housed immediately outside of. Supporting this idea is the fact that the machine draws power from Broadway Locksmith and that the heavy padlock keeping it secure was seemingly bought from there. However, if Broadway Locksmith is responsible for stocking the machine, they have made a commendable effort to convince people otherwise. In addition to flatly denying that they have anything to do with it, both the owner of Broadway Locksmith and random employees have stuck to the exact same story over the years while being grilled by everyone from USA Today to Vice. They claim they don't know who restocks the machine and that they've never seen anyone open it up to put something inside or collect the money it contains. Now, at this point you may have found yourself thinking, “Okay, but surely the city knows who owns the machine because whoever owns it must have a permit or something, right?” Well, Jessica Lee of The Seattle Times had that exact same thought and reached out to city officials about the matter in an attempt to discern once and for all who actually owned the machine. According to Lee, a spokeswoman for the city eventually got back to her and explained that, for some reason, the city didn't have any records pertaining to the machine in question.Social Media proves it's not hauntedPics captured and shared online of actual people stocking the machinebut not thehttps://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2014/05/spoiler-alert-mystery-of-the-capitol-hill-mystery-coke-machines-mysteries-revealed/In January 2018, the same month Seattle passed its sugary drink tax, the machine raised its price from its typical $0.75 to $1.00.In June 2018, the machine mysteriously disappeared and a message was posted to the machine's Facebook page stating "Going for a walk, need to find myself. Maybe take a shower even." A note was taped to the rail where the machine used to be: "Went for a walk". During this time, its Facebook page featured photoshopped images of the soda machine in a forest and at Machu Picchu.https://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2018/06/eyewitnesses-capitol-hills-mystery-soda-machine-has-disappeared/https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/seattle/mystery-soda-machine-vanishes-from-seattles-capitol-hill/281-569658739 Hosted on Acast. This week, our guest is Adnan Barq, a young Palestinian student of English literature and journalism from occupied East Jerusalem. Adnan offers his perspective on the latest Palestinian uprising which was born out of resistance to two forms of colonial violence in Occupied East Jerusalem: the settler-driven campaign of ethnic cleansing in the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah and interference and violence inflicted by the IOF against Palestinian worshippers in Al-Aqsa mosque during the month of Ramadan and in particular on the most holy day of Ramadan - Laylat Al Qadr. Lara shares updates from the latest military assaults on Gaza which have, by May 19, 2021 killed over 210 Palestinians, half of them being women and children with, in numerous cases many members of families being massacred together. She also shares reports from her friends living on the ground in '48 including by reference to the widespread destruction of Palestinian businesses as well as the lynching of Palestinians in the streets by Zionist mobs. Lara and Adnan, a Palestinian refugee in exile and a Palestinian in occupied Palestine comment on the meaning of this uprising, its possibilities for the future as well as its role in the history of the struggle for a liberated Palestine. Michael gets kicked off the call 7 times most likely due to heavy censorship.

You ease your grip on the wheel of your '98 Ford Explorer as your eyes drink in the endless miles of highway stretched out before you. Undaunted, you coast on; hours and towns slipping away like sand in the wind. You pull off on a tiny dirty road, your thirst begging to be quenched. A quaint, mom and pop convenience shop stands before you and you graze the barrels of fresh jerky before ultimately settling on an ice cold root beer. You pop the top off a Barq's, and take a meaningful swig before arriving at the register. "Can I get a pack of smokes?" You ask the weathered man behind the counter. He obliges. "That'll be $6.48," he announces softly. "What's this town called anyways?" You ask him while peeling off a five and two one's from the bundle of cash in your pocket. His eyes come alive and he tips his cap, "Welcome to Goof City."

One does not simply walk into Burj al-Barq. There is a gate. A metal gate. Bread boy thicc. And some strict entry guidelines enforced by two air elements (more like square elementals, as they are lame). After refusing a deal to accept the party's prison labor they instead make a counteroffer: to imprison us. Luckily, Wroth's circle gets these squares. Though the deal went south (for Arthos, who fell in a pit), things are looking up for the rest of the party (there's an elevator and also no more Arthos). Something happened with a gargoyle too, but he's dead now.

Lafayette native Jim Gossen has been immersed in the seafood industry since the early 1970s when he began picking up and selling Gulf seafood out of the back of his pickup truck to source fresh seafood for Landry's Restaurants. His hands-on experience and relationship building over the past few decades have given Jim an up-close understanding of the challenges facing the fisherman who captain the seafood industry and what it will take to pass on the tools for business survival to the next generation of fisherman. His message is clear: the Gulf Seafood industry must have a unified voice and be innovative as it adapts to changing circumstances if it is to remain viable for future generations. In this episode of Discover Lafayette with Jan Swift, Jim Gossen shares his love of the seafood industry, provides an historical overview of how consumers' tastes and demand for seafood has evolved, and explains why he believes Louisiana's fisherman can successfully compete globally by focusing on the quality of their superior product as compared with other country's cheaper and inferior seafood offerings. Jim Gossen's dedication to the seafood industry led him to great success as a restauranteur, seafood processor, manufacturer and distributor of fresh Louisiana seafood. In the early days of his initial business, Creole Foods, Jim drove his own 18-wheeler to source and deliver shrimp and red snapper. Creole Foods quickly evolved into a successful business renamed Louisiana Foods, a global seafood endeavor that Jim sold to Sysco in 2012. He served as Chair of the board of Sysco until his recent retirement. Jim currently serves as Chair of the Gulf Seafood Foundation, which promotes Gulf seafood, tourism, and culture. He also owns Jimmy G's by the Houston airport and Louisiana Catering, an oil-related catering business. A recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Gulf Guardian Award for his work in promoting the use and sale of by-catch (seafood such as Cobia or Triggerfish caught unintentionally while hauling in fishing nets that can be sold to restaurants), he has also been recognized by "My Table’s Legends of the Industry, Southern Living’s Heroes of the New South Awards, and is one of Cooking Light’s 20 Food Heroes in America. While today's restaurant menu typically offers salmon, crabcakes, and a variety of fish dishes, it wasn't always so. When Jim entered the distribution business in the early 1970's and moved to Houston, seafood was not a staple on menus. No one knew what Creole meant, no one knew what crawfish was. In fact, when Jim drove his fresh seafood offerings to Houston, he also carted along Community Coffee, Barq's Rootbeer, Camellia Red Beans, tasso, Veron's Andouille Sausage, and New Orleans' Leidenheimer French Bread, all of which were unknown commodities outside of Louisiana. They quickly became hits in the cowboy market of Houston and beyond.....as did Jim Gossen. At the age of 30, Jim Gossen on one of his trips to pick up food products along with fish, shrimp and oysters in Louisiana. Photo Gossen Archives Over the years, tastes have changed and the manner in which seafood is sourced has also changed dramatically. In the 1980s, restaurant patrons feasted on Speckled Trout and Redfish. Both of these fishes were made popular by Chef Paul Prudhomme and his "blackened" seafood dishes. No one could have imagined how fast the popularity of these dishes would take off worldwide and the fish became scarce due to high consumer demand. Limits were placed upon the catch of speckled trout and redfish and now they are only accessible by the recreational fishermen in the region. China and other countries, however, have been willing to step in and meet the demand for affordable and accessible seafood. "Our Gulf seafood industry has been forced to compete on price, It is time to stop competing on price and instead compete on quality." Jim Gossen Photo by Ed Lallo

As the son of an army officer, Julian Brunt of Biloxi, was exposed to different cultures and foods at a young age. He recalls a dinner party his mother gave for some German friends while in Europe. He also remembers his first Barq’s root beer and soft shell crab poor boy. When writing about food for the Sun Herald or other publications, Brunt likes to include stories that tie a particular dish to its parent culture.
Root Beer Root Beer is the invention of Charles E. Hires. As legend has it he discovered, developed, stumbled upon or borrowed (aka stole) the recipe while on his honeymoon. Charles trained as a pharmacist so he was probably keen to tastes and smells. He also was aware of what people liked of didn't like as they were sure to complain while picking up the stuff to end what ailed them. Hires become the tycoon of root beer overseeing it's production until 1925 when his son's took over the business. He died in 1937. There is no right way to make root beer. Brewers from around the world are up to the task of developing their own take. Several things is consistent though: it should have bite, it should feel creamy, adn the head should be big for this sassy drink to be considered classic. links: High Fructose Corn Syrup is okay to eat "fact" site. http://www.hfcsfacts.com/ Barq's podcast about root beer. http://www.barqs.com/ homework: Get a bunch of different Root Beers from your market and have a tasting party. everyone, especially the kids, are welcome to join in. be sure to get some awesome ice cream to make floats.
