Namely, how World seems to finally be hitting the gas to actually be competitive with Diddy Kong Racing, our thoughts on new and returning DK-related tracks, and how we think the other Kongs will eventually show up!

fWotD Episode 2754: Donkey Kong Country Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 18 November 2024 is Donkey Kong Country.Donkey Kong Country is a 1994 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It is a reboot of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise and follows the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile King K. Rool and his army, the Kremlings. The single-player traverses 40 side-scrolling levels as they jump between platforms and avoid obstacles. They collect items, ride minecarts and animals, defeat enemies and bosses, and find secret bonus stages. In multiplayer modes, two players work cooperatively or race each other. After developing Nintendo Entertainment System games in the 1980s, Rare, a British studio founded by Tim and Chris Stamper, purchased Silicon Graphics workstations to render 3D models. Nintendo sought a game to compete with Sega's Aladdin (1993) and commissioned Rare to revive the dormant Donkey Kong franchise. Rare assembled 12 developers to work on Donkey Kong Country over 18 months. Donkey Kong Country was inspired by the Super Mario series and was one of the first home console games to feature pre-rendered graphics, achieved through a compression technique that converted 3D models into SNES sprites with little loss of detail. It was the first Donkey Kong game neither produced nor directed by the franchise's creator Shigeru Miyamoto, though he contributed design ideas.Following its announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1994, Donkey Kong Country was highly anticipated and backed by a major marketing campaign that cost $16 million in America alone. It was released in November 1994 to acclaim; critics hailed its visuals as groundbreaking and praised its gameplay and music. Its quality and design were favourably compared to the Super Mario series. Donkey Kong Country received several year-end accolades and set the record for the fastest-selling video game at the time. With 9.3 million copies sold worldwide, it is the third-bestselling SNES game and the bestselling Donkey Kong game. Following the success, Nintendo purchased a large minority stake in Rare, which became a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo during the late 1990s.Donkey Kong Country re-established Donkey Kong as a popular Nintendo franchise and helped maintain the SNES's popularity into the fifth generation of video game consoles. It is considered one of the greatest video games of all time and has been ported to platforms such as the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and digital distribution services. Rare followed it with two sequels for the SNES, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (1995) and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (1996), and the Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64 (1999). After a hiatus, during which Rare was acquired by the Nintendo competitor Microsoft, Retro Studios revived the series with Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) for the Wii and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014) for the Wii U.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Monday, 18 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Donkey Kong Country on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Stephen.

The Kongversation catches up with all the latest news and updates on the Donkey Kong Country half of Super Nintendo World! While the expansion has been delayed until the end of the year in Japan, Universal Orlando has fully revealed its existence for next year's Epic Universe. This includes new details, never-before-revealed specifics, and a fresh international identity for a certain Donkey Kong character.
Nintendo and Illumination have announced they're releasing "a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros." in 2026. The question that naturally arises with such odd phrasing is, will this be a direct sequel to the previous film or the purported Donkey Kong spinoff? The Kongversation champs some popcorn and slanders some Hollywood stars in our debate over the nature of Nintendo's next blockbuster film!
The most recent new, standalone Donkey Kong game is now one decade old. It's a dubious, depressing milestone for any DK fan, but Hyle's joined by The Cartoon Gamer, Malik, to help look on the bright side of things and warm the cold sensation of 10 years wandering the frozen tundra!

The music and its stark difference in tone is also discussed. And of course the polarizing character of Kiddy Kong is given a second look.Is this game better than its legacy would lead you to believe? With both excitement and criticism around Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass, two of DK Vine's resident Mario Kart Tour players, Hyle and Cameron, take a look at the interesting interplay between the two concurrent Mario Kart titles. Does upscaling a mobile game's tracks to double a celebrated console game's content really work?
For Women's History Month, Hyle is joined by Gibbon and Courtney "Altermentality" Svatek to look at the ladies of the Donkey Kong Universe! From quiet trailblazers like Dixie Kong and Kazooie to those who caused flooding on the path (Candy Kong, Berri), it's an expansive look at some of our favorites across the DK series, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Dinosaur Planet, Yooka-Laylee, and more!

The Kongversation has been historically negative about Mario Kart Tour. But recently, Hyle and Jeff got upgraded phones and have been able to give the game a fairer shot, discovering the hidden joys not immediately apparent to anyone afraid their phone is going to catch on fire halfway through a race. Also, Hyle spent $39.99 on Dixie Kong and feels the need to defend his choice.
Rounding out the beloved Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Peter and Cody sit down and talk about Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble, which brings with it a very new sound that compliments this game. This is to be expected though, when David Wise took a back seat to allow Eveline Fischer a chance to compose most of the tracks herself. But does this late SNES era game hold a candle to the monumental titles that were DKC and DKC2? You'll have to listen to find out what we thought! Question of the Episode: In DKC3 (or any game, really) what were your favorite and worst stages you have ever played? Only fan of the show, Gina (microwave) Dorso joins the Hoppy Boys to discuss Dutch import, Heineken. Gina talks about her Wonka-esque tour of the Heineken factory, and tells the story of her first blackout as Brendan consistently interrupts her. Later, Diddy Kong shows up to complain about his problems with Dixie Kong. With a packed mailbag this week, the Clyde-family canon expands.
On Today's episode our boys talk about Corona Virus, eating semen, and Dixie Kong's Age. Aaron's FBI Agent wasn't happy about that. Follow the podcast on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lactoastpodcast/
In the mid 90s Nintendo partnered with UK developer Rare to develop a game based on their Donkey Kong character. The resulting game, Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo, temporarily catapulted the animated gorilla into wide popularity. The resulting creative freedom this allowed Rare in potential sequels led to the release of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest in 1995 and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble in 1996. Debate over which of the two sequels reigned supreme raged for years. We've invited podcaster and graphic designer Dean Stephenson on the show to help settle the question once and for all in our second versus episode.
