Music by Vin Macri and Matt Brogan Podcast Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Overview In the podcast recording discussion titled "Another Pass at The Super Mario Bros Movie," hosts Case Aiken and Sam Alicea, joined by guest Matt (Stormageddon), delve into their cinematic experiences of the 2023 film, praising its 92-minute runtime and appeal to both children and nostalgic adult fans. They highlight standout performances, notably Jack Black as Bowser and Anya Taylor-Joy as a proactive Princess Peach, while critiquing Chris Pratt's portrayal of Mario as merely average. The hosts discuss the film's visual splendor and numerous Easter eggs, though they express disappointment over its reliance on pop music rather than classic Mario compositions. Despite some criticisms of the plot's formulaic nature and suggestions for improvement, the overall consensus is positive, deeming the film entertaining while respecting the franchise's legacy; potential sequels and upcoming projects are also touched upon as they conclude the episode. What made Donkey Kong Country such a unique, groundbreaking cultural event for Nintendo fans in 1994? Yes, it was the graphics, music, sound, and game design. But as Hyle and Dustin argue, it was also the instruction booklet's unique sense of humor. The Kongversation opens up Dan Owsen's manual masterpiece!
Broadcast live on https://twitch.tv/dkvine after the first ever Donkey Kong-themed Nintendo Direct, Hyle and Josh discuss Shigeru Miyamoto's walkabout in Donkey Kong Country at Super Nintendo World!
Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan, Dean, and Kris talk about Season 2, episode 5 of the unbelievably terrible Donkey Kong Country cartoon, Message in a Bottle Show. There are so many questions ranging to why some characters have blue tongues, where King K Rool's cape and tail went, and what exactly is going on with Cranky Kong's balls. Seriously, none of us were prepared for this episode. It was so very bad. At the top of the show, Kris once again gets in a fight with his electric company, but manages to spend some time enjoying Yars Rising and Cash Cow DX, while rewatching Dragon Ball. Dean didn't do a whole lot more gaming, but he did manage to give some impressions of a game called Star Trucker, and Dan finally shaved his head, but his beard remains more majestic than most. He also got a super nice care package from our friends at the Weekend Rental podcast! Finally, in Week Old News, Concord gets pulled just two weeks after its launch, leading to pretty passionate discussion about the state of PlayStation, especially when contrasting Concord's failure with Astro Bot's success. Xbox finally gets the new Capcom fighting collections, while the black Myth Wukong mystery continues, and some guy makes a metric ton of money defrauding music streaming services. Enjoy! The Kongversation champs some popcorn and slanders some Hollywood stars in our debate over the nature of Nintendo's next blockbuster film!
The most recent new, standalone Donkey Kong game is now one decade old. It's a dubious, depressing milestone for any DK fan, but Hyle's joined by The Cartoon Gamer, Malik, to help look on the bright side of things and warm the cold sensation of 10 years wandering the frozen tundra!
We discuss the recent 30-second ad for the upcoming Donkey Kong Country expansion to Super Nintendo World!

Meet Donkey Kong, Private Eye. DK gets involved in a case about a horde of stolen bananas. At first, it seems like just your ordinary case, but it quickly becomes a wild adventure which will lead DK to one of the most notorious villains. Guest stars include Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Baby Kong, Funky Kong, Candy Kong, and Cranky Kong.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has reignited a debate for the ages (and a debate about the aged). Is Cranky Kong the father or grandfather of the current Donkey Kong? And does that make the current Donkey Kong an adult Donkey Kong Jr. or his son? And where does Baby Donkey Kong fit into this mess? The Kongversation recounts the complicated, sometimes contradictory history of Cranky and Donkey's relationship!
The Kongversation discusses the four new Donkey Kong sets coming to LEGO Super Mario! The surprises, the references, and even the hidden lore of the upcoming expansion to the sprawling toy series!
When The Super Mario Bros. Movie was first announced with scant details except an all-star cast, rumors ran wild. Will they try live action again, or is it animated? Will they try one of the many recent video game plots, or will this be an all-new story? Is this a complete and utter financial folly, with $300 million in development and promotion? Vinnk and Sean review the highest-grossing film of 2023, and (so far) the 19th top grossing film of all time, point out every visual and audio Easter egg they could find, and actually share some criticisms of a Nintendo product! The Super Mario Bros. MovieOnly In Theaters April 5, 2023For the first time, the iconic global entertainment brands Illumination and Nintendo join forces to create The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a new, big-screen adventure starring one of pop culture's most prominent plumbers of the past four decades.Based on the world of Nintendo's Mario games, the film invites audiences into a vibrant, thrilling new universe unlike any created before in an action-packed, exuberant cinematic comedy event. While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi. With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key; The Lion King) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy;The Queen's Gambit), Mario taps into his own power. The Super Mario Bros. Movie features an extraordinary comedic cast, including Jack Black (Jumanji films) as Bowser, Seth Rogen (Neighbors franchise) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (American Dad!, Family Guy) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book) as Spike, plus a special voice appearance by Charles Martinet, who has voiced the characters of Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario games for more than 30 years. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part). From Nintendo and Illumination—creator of the global blockbuster Despicable Me, Minions, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets franchises—The Super Mario Bros. Movie is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri p.g.a. and by Nintendo's Representative Director and Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, after more than six years of close bond and discussions between the two. The film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Movie, Hyle and Jeff have a Kongversation about all of the little bits of news relating to Donkey and Cranky Kong's appearance in the film. Their voices! DK Island's portrayal! Leaked merchandise! We also take a detour to Brooklyn to discuss the film's nostalgia-heavy marketing!
Hyle and Cameron discuss the multitude of changes Mario Kart Tour's gone through in 2022! From the removal of the controversial gacha system and the addition of Balloon Battle all the way to the new Donkey Kong-related karts and tracks... and the possibility that new content in the game may finally be winding down (before we even get Cranky Kong, Brash Bear, and Glow in the Dark Lube Funky Kong).
In a special LIVE episode of the Kongversation broadcast on Twitch, Hyle and Cameron give their full thoughts on the full-length trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie featuring Donkey and Cranky Kong! They also dive into all of the Kong cameos from the trailer and poster, and break down how the Kongs will drive the plot of the film!
While both buzzed on the alcohols, Hyle and Jeff give their GROUNDBREAKING thoughts on the Super Mario Bros. Movie teaser trailer, which did not have Donkey or Cranky Kong in it. It didn't even have any ass in it, which is what most of our listeners pony up to the bar for here at the Coyote Ugly. But anyway, it's a kid's movie and we're adults with some serious opinions.
Podcast juice, huh? I have no idea what it is, dude, but it tastes radical! Welcome back to the podcast and our final episode in Ape-ril! We're going to be discussing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. This is a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns which is itself a spiritual follow up to the original series of games from the SNES, which puts this in a fairly odd position as a part of the franchise. A lot of the base elements of the game are tied to those original titles as the new series tries to relate back to what made those games so memorable, but then again the mechanics and designs of DKCR are being iterated on to further polish the game and the “tropical freeze” goes much further than a fresh coat of paint. This sequel-to-a-successor status and strong thematic elements make Tropical Freeze actually a very interesting standalone game, despite it's close ties to its predecessors. We're going to be talking about level design and the kind of platformer this strives to be, the way its stages tell stories on both a micro and macro level, and we discover the punchline to a joke about Cranky Kong that started over twenty years ago. Thank you for joining us again and for closing out this mon(key)th with us! What are your feelings on Retro Studio's take on the Donkey Kong franchise? Do you think these games are great? Are they overhyped? What about, and this is extremely important, what about Rambi? Do you…do you like Rambi? Let us know in the comments, or over on our Discord server where we talk about the games. Next time, we're diving into our annual tradition of Mystery May and talking about Disco Elysium, so we hope you'll join us then!
It's time to make a moveset for our favorite grump, Cranky Kong! Zantok and Jonno tackle the spectacular ape, one taunt, victory pose, and special move at a time. The oo oo and the aa aa, aren't that right?

Người Nhật là ai? Donkey Kong, also known as DK, is a male gorilla, the main protagonist of the Donkey Kong franchise, and the leader of the DK crew. Over the years, Nintendo has been ambiguous about just how many Donkey Kongs there have been. The first character named Donkey Kong appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong and its sequels, serving as the villain. In 1994's Donkey Kong Country, a new, different-looking Donkey Kong was introduced, said to be the grandson of the original arcade character, who was now the elderly Cranky Kong. In subsequent games, however, the likeness of the "new" Donkey Kong is often used in place of that of the "old" Donkey Kong in games such as Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Game and Watch Gallery (in the title screen only), and Yoshi's Island DS, in which Mario and DK are both babies. However, the modern DK being the same age as Mario would be anachronistic, as Mario is portrayed as significantly older in age than the original Donkey Kong's offspring in Donkey Kong Jr.

Super Nintendo's side-scrolling and swinging simian is our game for this week! Donkey Kong Country is an absolute classic from it's first days on the SNES to it's multiple ports on the Game Boy and more, we love this game. This was the first look at the Donkey Kong we all know and love today. It cemented him as not only a Nintendo icon but for gaming as a whole. I don't know anyone who is a bigger fan than Numan so it's great to get his take on what makes this game so great. We discuss some big money deals in the world of gaming, there's some...technical difficulties and the Grumpy Times with Cranky Kong quiz!!Get in contact at: presstheactionbuttonpod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode of "What's Your Favorite?," Billy learns all about comedian Andy Barrett's obsession with Donkey Kong Country and the entire Donkey Kong Extended Universe. No kidding.
This week we look at some great games we love that didn't get the credit they deserve! Come along with us as we discover one by one what's on each other's lists! There's some great songs in this episode if we do say so ourselves! We get Numan's outrageous overreaction to naming conventions, his continuous threats to replace Yusuf and Grumpy Times with Cranky Kong! Also the secret Meat & Bones society! It's an underwhelming secret...We'd love to hear from ya!Get in contact at: presstheactionbuttonpod@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
I'm old. So old that in school we were taught how to use email. Yeah, I'm ancient. So anyway, they actually taught us in school to never ever ever use Reply All and it bugs the mess out of me because there are times where i's the proper move. So yeah, I'm a cranky old man and Cranky Kong is my role model/life goal. Intro from Dreamland by Splyt. Used with permission. Outro from Undead Mess by Splyt. Used with permission.

I say it almost every episode, but I'm really excited to talk about this week's game. Donkey Kong Country is easily on "10 favourite games of all-time" list. It's a masterpiece. Donkey Kong Country is just one of those games that everybody has played. It's one of the best selling video games in history, and at one point it was even been packaged with the Super Nintendo itself. At a time when people were looking at the Sega Genesis and it's graphical capabilities, this game was the SNES's way of pushing back. It's absolutely gorgeous, and as far as I'm concerned it looks as good today as it did twenty-five years ago. I've said it a million times, but Super Mario World is my favourite game ever. I think it's literally the perfect video game. Donkey Kong Country is just as good. Frankly, it looks better and it has better music than Mario does. The 16-bit era of video games is still the golden age in this old timer's mind, and this game is one of the crown jewels of that generation. I don't even know what to say about, I just love it that much. I've beaten this game a million times, and I find myself going back to it again and again. The gameplay is tight, it's fun to play, it's perfect. It introduced us to Diddy Kong, and it showed the world why Cranky Kong (who's the original Donkey Kong, FYI) is the best character in gaming history. And we got Funky Kong. And Donkey Kong is a boss. King K Rool is a dope villain. The mine cart levels! Shooting from barrel to barrel! In a blizzard!! You can ride a swordfish! So damned good. Games like Donkey Kong Country are why I started this podcast in the first place. I have so many great memories of playing it as a kid. And this week, my buddy Henry came by to listen to me talk about some of them. He had a few of his own too. Great game, great guest, great episode. Check it out.

So there's this whole country of Kongs, which are like apes, and their leader is Donkey Kong. You know he's the leader because he wears a red tie and the other apes aren't allowed to wear clothes except for some of them. And Donkey Kong's grandpa is Cranky Kong who used to fight Mario. Okay, so who's Donkey Kong Jr.? Not sure. Sometimes the Kongs also rap.
We wade into the contentious familial history of Donkey Kong to decide once and for all whether Cranky Kong is a dad or a grandfather.

Very Special episode of the show today! Why? You ask.. because this show, Aaron Carter is pulling the strings. Now I want to prepare you a little for what you are going to hear, and lay down a few disclaimers... For starters this show will not contain an awesome opening catch phrase.. I know this may upset many of our listeners. The other thing is that while we really didn't want to 'bash' the VGX we have to stay honest and give out opinions on the impressions the show left on us.. and our impression for the show is that it was terrible. If your were one of the thousands, if not millions of people watching the VGX.. I'm sorry for your loss. The internet has spoken and the word that is most used when describing the event seems to be 'awkward'. The show featured a seemingly disinterested Joel McHale, and as always felt way out of touch with the hardcore gaming community. Videogame BANG! Host Aaron Carter endured watching VGX twice.. in the name of research of course. This week we discuss the hits and misses, of this years VGA.. err.. VGX. From the lows of Cranky Kong, to the sweet highs of No Mans Sky top to bottom we try to make sense of this debacle. After the VGX talk we go into part two of our hands on with the Wii U, this time focusing in on more hardcore gaming on this next gen Wii. Tekken, Call of Duty Black Ops 2, and Mass Effect 3 are on the menu and boy were we hungry. We evaluate the Wii U from a less 'Nintendo' stand point and look at the titles you might play when you aren't having a party. I should also mention that since my cohort Aaron is running the show, and the fact that he doesn't know how to tell time means the show goes a tad bit long this weekend, but he does finish strong with his very own outro line! This is an outro line you don't want to miss! All this and much much more on this weeeeeeeeeeeeks.. Videogame BANG!!!

Diversions into Lobodestroyo shilling and Star Trek minutae can't keep Chad and Hyle distracted from the big DKC Tropical Freeze news. Especially when that news decides to break during recording, prompting our heroes to awkwardly catch up on the info while reacting to it in real time. It was weird for them too.
We discuss a playable Cranky Kong in Donkey Kong Country, the sales of the PS4 and PS Vita TV, and the relevancy of Nintendo in a new generation of consoles. Then Kyle updates us on his Nuzlocke journey, Chris and Dave destroy Knack on PS4, Chris really enjoys Assassin's Creed IV, and Dave buys a 2DS for A Link Between Worlds and Animal Crossing. Joe laments over failure in Spelunky but rejoices in the fun that was had on a late night Cloudberry Kingdom session. Finally, we discuss why you should or should not buy a PS4 or an Xbox One. Oh, and Uncle Donna stops by...
