It's Good Friday for Flavor Friends and Jasmine from The Urban Oyster is doing her holiday fried fish platter. She drops off a plate for the friends even though it sold out asap. This episode is full of flavor. Impulse, Jason Bass and Donte Johnson pick up from where they left off in the culture. We hope you enjoyed episode 12 which was our first interview and video podcast with DJ Excel in LA. For episode 13, we are back on the podcast format in Revival Hotel with Topside announcing it's reopening April 15th. No dress code required but style is always a must. AirMax weekend at Revival was amazing and Tashia of The Sneaker Exhibit created one of the best post COVID experiences yet while celebrating women in the sneaker culture from around the region. Donte flexes his DC pride with Nike Foamposites over Air Force One's. Feel free to leave a comment about this one. In other news, Taco Bell hot sauce is being sold for some crazy amount, NFT's are doing the same - we have no idea what's real and fake anymore, but we definitely feel the need to get in the game and create our own Night Brunch NFT sauce art. You copping? We also find out that we all have heavy nerd energy. Of course we have to talk about Lil' Nas X and the evil airmax's. He proves trolling does pay off. Also prepare yourself for an Impulse you've never seen before - en fuego. Nike sent him a pair of sold out Carpet Company SB Dunk's. So you know we had to ask to only question that will either get your sneakers taken or allow you to get home the same way you left.......”What size of those?” LMAO.In food news, Half Smoke opened up their Baltimore location and we got a chance to check it out before they opened. Someone finds shrimp tails in their Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal box - eww yo! Bud Light Seltzer releases a pizza flavor. In music, they announced a new director of music for the Oscar's. This episode is flavorful af. BTW, next episode will have a special guest, but you have to listen to find out. Ayooo! This one has all the umami. Episode 12 of the Flavor Friends podcast is something different. This is our first interview and it with the foremost dopest and close friend to brand DJ Excel. Jason Bass and DJ Impulse to talk style, food, travel and more of what you've never heard before from Excel. Of course we talk music, but we go deeper than a Ichiran Ramen bowl with Excel. Here all about the things that influence him, his most recent project in a new brand called 'All-Time High', and what he eats while traveling the world. The crew speak on the New York Radio Wars that ultimately lead to a heated beef with @Hot97’s very own @FunkFlex (29:07). The fellas highlight the friendship and working relationship between #DJSpinBad and comedian @RussellPeters as well as Russell’s respect for the DJ community (55:30). DJ Excel comes in hard for his curtain call with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, to talk about the best clubs in the most popular and most obscure cities all over the world. From Sacramento to Ibiza to Singapore. But he says the king of all club and party cities on the planet is still Las Vegas. People come from all over the world to the mecca of the music and dance floor party capital of the universe. He shares his experiences jet setting from night to night, stage to stage, crowd to crowd. With a career where catching a few hours of sleep on an airplane is crucial and starting his set at 4am is the norm, no other profession on the planet can relate to his lifestyle. What does it take to make it as a world wide DJ? How do you move crowds from venue to venue each night? A pulsating rhythmic dance and trance of music, passion and love of the game. He never strays off the path of integrity to his true self. His true art form. The heart beat of the needle to vinyl. XX Please Follow and Subscribe to the Podcast. DJ Excel spins once again with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, to continue their discussion on the lives of artists and entertainers. It's a lifetime of hustle. The day you get complacent, is the day you start to lose your career. It's a constant grind, always changing, dynamic and never monotonous. But maybe that's why artists are who they are. Maybe that's why they are attracted to the uncertainty of the creative process, because it's never guaranteed. They can't sit still in one place, they always have to be creating, striving for more knowledge and life experiences. They also talk about what separates A-List celebrities from the rest and what it means to adapt as an artist during a year like 2020. Those who are unable to adjust their process, incapable of changing their focus, will disappear into the oblivion, forever. It is survival of the fittest, and those strong enough to reinvent themselves or even start over, are the ones who will come out unscathed on the other side of this apocalyptic mess. America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, sits with an artist who has performed in the most exclusive clubs, with the biggest celebrities, in cities and countries all over the world. His name is DJ Excel. He has opened for U2, Imagine Dragons, Sting and Katy Perry. Was an official DJ for Grand Prix with Steve Aoki and performed with Nas, Gil-Scott Heron, Ghostface, Gangstarr, Busta Rhymes, The Roots and Musiq Soulchild. His new Album drops in October of 2020 and he is giving everyone a sneak preview of all his new songs exclusively on "What's Your Name Again?", the podcast. It's titled "Out the Mud" and refers to the lotus in the mud that symbolizes the hardships and difficulties of life, or a challenging time we have faced or are facing. As with the stem growing toward the surface, we also grow through our experiences, through our difficulties, learning lessons along the way, removing obstacles, and overcoming our adversities. World traveling Dj Excel stops by the show to talk about his 20-year career compared to "soundcloud djs", why he prefers club djing and of course he joins us for a round of real or spam!
The LA based DJ Excel started in Philly as part of The Skratch Makaniks Crew and learning under the tutelage of DJ royalty like Jazzy Jeff and Rich Medina. Since then, he’s become one of the most in-demand traveling DJs, playing in every nightlife market in the US, including overseas in Europe and Japan. He produces house music with Baltimore’s DJ Impulse under the moniker ALFA PAARE. In this interview, Excel describes mentorship in DJing, the sacrifice of leaving a market at the top and starting over to establish yourself elsewhere, and the importance of choosing a good DJ moniker. You can follow DJ Excel on Instagram at @excelagram and catch up with him at DJExcel.com . It’s popular to think technology has made DJing easy. DJ Excel says it’s harder than ever. "When I started, you only had to do a portion of what I have to do now. You didn't have to worry about branding. You didn't have to worry about social media. You didn't have to worry about anything else other than making sure you had the records, making sure you were at the club on time.” Excel lets us know how he manages it all, shares a couple mistakes he’s made along the way, and explains why not having a safety net has kept him at his best. Continuing with the festive spirit Of A Very Decent Christmas, this month's mix will make you feel some type of way for the holidays. We found this early present from DJ Excel, Scratch Makaniks turntablist and Alfa Paare producer. These 72 minutes of classic Xmas songs are put together tighter than Macy's gift wrap, complete with all the scratches and tricks, and even a drop from old St. Nick. Happy Holidays to everyone!
An awesome DJ in his own right and 1/2 of the production duo "Alfa Paare" (along with DJ Excel), DJ Impulse chops it up over coffee and donuts about coming up in Baltimore, crab cakes and tour buses covered with blunt leavens. www.DJImpulseOnline.com
