Our guest this week is someone who is committed to elevating communities and creating wealth through hospitality ownership and leadership. Please welcome to the show, Founder of Hospitality Hued, Ashli Johnson!Ashli sits down with Host Dan Ryan to discuss the ways the hospitality industry can be more accommodating of Black and Brown professionals. Ashli shares her motivations for founding Hospitality Hued, the importance of early professional development, and how to instill a sense of ownership in employees.Takeaways: While hospitality is ultimately a business of service, it is rapidly evolving to better address DEI issues across employment, supplier diversity, and leadership. To remain impactful, those in the industry must actively engage in these conversations.Conferences and networking are a crucial part of success in the hospitality industry, yet many Black and Brown leaders find themselves “under conferenced”. To combat this, HUED was created to lower barriers to these opportunities for Black and Brown leaders.Leverage alumni networks to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical career development. Don't overlook the importance of having a strategic approach when pursuing career goals to avoid potential disadvantages and seize growth opportunities. To motivate teams to think like owners, consider actually giving them ownership stakes, as it fundamentally changes their understanding and investment in the business. Implementing an equity share model can drive engagement from general managers. In hospitality, it's crucial to understand how positive guest experiences impact the business's overall success and competitive position. Recognizing the connection between guest satisfaction and business metrics such as rates, market competition, and capital expenditures is essential for professional growth and effective management.Aspiring hotel or restaurant owners should carefully consider their financial and personal responsibilities before pursuing ownership. Instead of direct ownership, roles such as investor or franchisee have lower capital requirements and barriers to entry.Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who want to master the business, and ensure that your leadership is aware of your interests to help you move towards your desired career path.Quote of the Show:“Your fortune is found in the follow up.” - Ashli JohnsonLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsashlijohnson/ Website: https://www.hospitalityhued.com/ Shout Outs:2:12 - HD Vegas: https://hdexpo.hospitalitydesign.com/ 2:47 - Howard University: https://howard.edu/ 2:50 - Marriott-Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership: https://business.howard.edu/hospitality-leadership 44:52 - John Fareed: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnfareed/ 45:06 - From Invisible to Icon: How to Become a Known Expert in Your Industry: https://a.co/d/03AZNsoL 45:41 - Julien Saunders: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliensaunders/ 45:42 - Kiersten Saunders45:47 - Rich and Regular: https://richandregular.com/ 46:36 - Thomas Penny III: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-penny-iii-1aa40915/ 46:42 - Damon Lawrence: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hauspitality/overlay/about-this-profile/ 46:45 - Jason Bass: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasoncbass/ 47:01 - ILC: https://ilcongress.com/ 47:15 - Kendra Plummer: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kendraplummer/ 47:37 - Bashar Wali: https://www.linkedin.com/in/basharwali/ 47:56 - Lauren A. Soudain, une autre voiture les a balayés et a filé. The engine was running and the headlights were on. On the back seat were several articles of clothing, neatly folded. Up front, there was cash, cut up credit cards, and a driver's license. In 2019, Donte Johnson joined the Revival Hotel team as general manager, and set things in motion to turn the hotel into more than just a place to lay your head or to grab a drink. Johnson is committed to ensuring the hotel is a space that is inclusive and welcoming to all. This is done through various efforts as part of the Hotel's social impact focus---  a plan launched in January 2020 with the help of the Georgetown Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation to elevate and support minority-owned businesses and develop and nurture relationships with local organizations in order to make an impact on the local community and beyond. To advance its social impact efforts, Johnson hired the hotel's first-ever Director of Culture & Impact, Jason Bass, who has spearheaded numerous efforts on behalf of the hotel including curated programming and events such as educational workshops, interesting conversations highlighting diverse voices from across the community (in celebration of Black History Month, Women's History Month, around medical cannabis on 4/20, Earth Day, etc.), art pop-ups, etc. Beyond their programming on-site, Revival works to support the Baltimore community through partnerships with local minority businesses, engaging in philanthropic efforts and providing assistance to the community wherever the need made be. Some examples of this include a commitment to engage with local and Black-owned businesses, which has resulted in vendor partnerships with Lor Tush (the hotel purchased a year's worth of toilet paper) and Art of Balance Wellness Spa, both of which are women and Black-owned small businesses in Baltimore, and a soon-to-be-announced partnership with Black Acres Roastery, a Black-owned artisan coffee roaster located in the Highlandtown district of Baltimore, as well as an internship program with Morgan State University and the ongoing fundraising effort with Black-owned label La Fete du Rose (owner is a Baltimore native) to benefit the Baltimore-based Learning to Live Movement, providing travel opportunities for high school students of color. The hotel plans to continue modifying its vendor/supplier list to support local and minority-owned businesses to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses to grow and flourish.  Throughout the pandemic, the hotel has provided free meals to those in need, discounted rooms to first responders and donated restaurant space to women- and Black-owned restaurants Urban Oyster and Breaking Bread (both which are still working out of the hotel to this day!). This episode is full of flavor. Impulse, Jason Bass and Donte Johnson pick up from where they left off in the culture. We hope you enjoyed episode 12 which was our first interview and video podcast with DJ Excel in LA. For episode 13, we are back on the podcast format in Revival Hotel with Topside announcing it's reopening April 15th. No dress code required but style is always a must. AirMax weekend at Revival was amazing and Tashia of The Sneaker Exhibit created one of the best post COVID experiences yet while celebrating women in the sneaker culture from around the region. Donte flexes his DC pride with Nike Foamposites over Air Force One's. Feel free to leave a comment about this one. In other news, Taco Bell hot sauce is being sold for some crazy amount, NFT's are doing the same - we have no idea what's real and fake anymore, but we definitely feel the need to get in the game and create our own Night Brunch NFT sauce art. You copping? We also find out that we all have heavy nerd energy. Of course we have to talk about Lil' Nas X and the evil airmax's.  He proves trolling does pay off. Also prepare yourself for an Impulse you've never seen before - en fuego. Nike sent him a pair of sold out Carpet Company SB Dunk's. So you know we had to ask to only question that will either get your sneakers taken or allow you to get home the same way you left.......”What size of those?” LMAO.In food news, Half Smoke opened up their Baltimore location and we got a chance to check it out before they opened. Someone finds shrimp tails in their Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal box - eww yo! Bud Light Seltzer releases a pizza flavor. In music, they announced a new director of music for the Oscar's. This episode is flavorful af.  BTW, next episode will have a special guest, but you have to listen to find out. Make sure you subscribe, share and follow.@thenightbrunch @djimpulse @jasoncbass @do.joh @revivalbaltimore

We have questions that will never be answered especially how the hell did they hire a no experience having GM in a hotel the size of a block in DTLA with deaths on the daily?! We just sayin (WJS). We find out what inspired Impulse to become a DJ. Impulse brings through some special snacks from Trader Joe's that are life changing. These were clearly invited by an 80's baby. Listen to this unwrapping ASMR experience with PB&J. In other food and beverage news, White Claw drops some new Summer flavors. Sonic's is dishing out Uncork Slushes that are spiked slushees. Sounds like a trap to us. Let us know how that works out for y'all. Travis Scott sells out of his spiked seltzer. You didn't not get'em. We can get anything these days; sneakers, cell phones, supreme gear...nothing without hype stealing out greatness. Grateful Pizza, a local frozen pizza business started during the pandemic, dropped some pies off. In the culture, Toy R Us is coming back with physical retail stores. We're all about bringing back childhood toy store energy. Real World is coming back on MTV. Did y'all ever want to be on Real World? Or maybe Melrose Place? Maybe that's just a Jason thing. DJ Impulse and Jason Bass w/ Donte Johnson start this one off with an appreciation for our Baltimore roots and showing love to our two different accents. In food, fast food chicken sandwiches are still a thing. Tuna melts in the air fryer are fire and someone needs to make an uncrustable version for the friends. Stuff pancake bites from Eggo's are out here. Coca-Cola has a canned coffee in stores. In the culture, Kanye and Kim are splitting and we hope the world gets a good album out of the situation since things seem over-over with them. In style – staying with Yeezy, his new sneakers look like a well steamed pork dumpling. Pharrell got cleared on the blurred lines sample problem. Kevin Harts stylist stole $1.2 million of Kevin's money and styled himself. New emoji's were introduced and we must have all needed the durag emoji and didn't know it. Vaccination nation has us feeling free again. We also watched a little Netflix (maybe more than a little) and we can't believe people kept their doors unlocked in the docuseries ‘Night Stalker: Hunt for a Serial Killer' even when they were told a serial killer was knocking off their neighbors. Also, the Cecil Hotel series is equally as wild. Check those out and look for the connection. Make sure you also download the new Cecil app that's just the voice of an old dude that replaces Siri and interrupts you with old man facts. Follow @do.joh for Donte Johnson at Revival Hotel @revivalbaltimoreBrought to you by www.thenightbrunch.com by @djimpulse and @jasoncbass aka @thenightbrunch
