Title: Content is King Guest: Rob DeChiaro, President of Skratch & EVP of Media at Pro Shop
This week, I'm joined by Addie, a golf writer and the Travel and Lifestyle Editor for Skratch. From her early days in competitive golf to carving out a career in the media space, she's experienced the game from all angles. But what really sets her apart is her ability to capture the evolving spirit of golf—whether it's the challenges of playing in New York City, the rise of creative golf fashion, or the new wave of inclusivity shaping the sport. We dive into the innovative aspects of TGL, the deep personal connections we form with our favorite courses, and how golf has become more than just a game—it's a lifestyle. Addie's insights offer a fresh perspective on where the sport is headed and why.
Reflecting on the recent pod with the co-founders of Skratch, Dylan and Aaron take a closer look at their approach to running their own businesses. Leadership, profit versus impact, scaling versus staying small, funding and business models. Maybe most important - what time horizon are we using to make all these decisions - are we truly playing the infinite game? Skratch won our award for "Brand Of The Year" in 2024, and the main reason was because we respected their approach to playing the infinite game: making decisions rooted in long term stability. So many brands in their position would angle for acquisition and an exit strategy, but that is not on their radar. The discipline and vision that it takes to stay true to that ethos is evident in this conversation with co-founders Allen Lim and Ian MacGregor. In this edition of the pod, Matt and David dive deep into the world of Saucony running shoes. They discuss the brand's popular daily trainers, like the Ride and Triumph, known for their comfort and versatility. Next, they explore stability models, such as the Guide and Hurricane. Then the reach for speed with the Endorphin line, featuring the Trainer, Speed, Pro, and Elite (and Sinister, though not technically an "Endorphin" shoe). On this episode, Andrea is joined by a very special guest: Dr. Allen Lim, founder of Skratch Labs. Allen gives us a breakdown on everything nutrition and hydration for endurance athletes. How should you fuel before/during the run? How do you measure and apply your sweat rate to how you hydrate? What role does protein play in recovery? And much more! While working as a sport scientist and coach for a professional cycling team, Dr. Allen Lim started making his own training food and sports drinks from scratch for the cyclists because too many of the pre-packaged sports bars and drinks that were marketed or given to them were laden with artificial ingredients and literally making them sick to their stomach. Eventually, he started making a “secret drink mix” in his kitchen using a recipe with less sugar, more sodium, and no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors, with a simple and clean taste created by using real fruit. Soon, word of the "Secret Drink Mix" was spreading fast and it was clear that the demand for our all natural drink mixes extended far beyond cyclists or endurance athletes. To meet the growing demand, Allen put together a team of close friends and they decided to let the secret out by opening a little company in Boulder, Colorado called Skratch Labs.
