By 2010, so many of the bloggers who'd set out to subvert the gatekeepers had become them. Resentment grew: from a new generation of artists, from heavily-financed competition and especially from the labels. More money - spent on building websites, growing networks, signing acts and retaining lawyers - meant closer scrutiny on what started out as passion projects. And it all would come to a head as families gathered around the dinner table.

No two artists better symbolize success and downfall than Kid Cudi and Charles Hamilton. Massive talents, major deals, mental issues. But their paths after getting on could not be more different. As the culture became less about artist discovery and celebration, blogs, in order to get engagement, became dependent on chasing page views at any expense.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mereki over Zoom video!Australian/English savant of purposeful pop Mereki releases her debut solo album Death of a Cloud. Created over seven years and three continents, in collaboration with a roster of the artists Mereki trusted most to bring this deeply personal and intuitively conceived material to life, the album is a look into the joy and difficulty of self-realization and finding the universe within, expressing this journey through music – Stream.The album release comes along with the news of Mereki signing with BMG. Proving her success as an independent artist, her progress will be furthered through the creative efforts of BMG along with her own label BunBun Records.Leading up to her album release, Mereki put out the singles “Presence” and “Twin Flame.” The creation of “Presence” stemmed from Mereki getting inspired by the guitars reverberating through the walls while in a writing room above the studio where Dhani Harrison and Graham Coxon of Blur were recording. After she began singing a melody that became the first verse, she shared it with Harrison, and then the two were motivated to work together to complete Mereki's composition. “Twin Flame” sentimentally arrived the same week as Valentine's Day as a hymn to kindred spirits.Her singles were met with praise from the likes of Notion, Beats Per Minute, Soundazed and Mundane Mag, as well as editorial support from Spotify's infamous Lorem playlist, making the artist's return her strongest streaming to date.At the end of 2022, Mereki and her Be Kind charity partnered with the Happy Baby Community for a Presents for Presence holiday fundraiser. The campaign helped raise money, awareness, and much needed supplies for asylum-seeking new mothers and their babies. Episode 74: A-TRAK + ROCTAKON: The Disconnect On this week’s episode, the fellas recruit the help of Hip-Hop Guru @SheckyGreenLV (founder of the Source Magazine, Former Talent Director for XS Nightclub) to discuss the recent uproar on twitter between @Atrak @Roctakon addressing the struggles of working class DJs in open format. The crew makes a call to @Atrak (14:35) to further expand on his tweets and touched on the changes in nightlife/music after @DJAM passed (23:46), the vast difference in pay between certain headliners and openers (39:06) and the Agents/Managers ultimately having a hand as the “nexus of power” between the clubs and the DJ’s (53:27). They later make a call to @Roctakon (1:06:41) to explain his dilemma with Atrak’s tweets and why he questions the Canadian DJ’s intentions (1:14:50). Roctakon also speaks on @Crazearoni coming to Atrak’s defense which ultimately escalated the exchange on twitter (1:37:16). The crew wrap-up both calls (1:58:44) and discuss the recent Michael Jackson documentary on HBO “Leaving Neverland” (2:11:51). Crooked summarizes his experience last week at the @BeyondTheMusicRetreat organized by @DJcity and @DJVice (3:17:39).

At the end January I played in New York. A club called "Slate" that really changed my mind about New York night life. The club is a big space with high ceilings and the vibe can be best described as "FUN." The resident DJ, Greg Groovez opened for me that night and he inspired me. Traveling for the past several years I haven't heard many opening sets that had such good programming. This may be the best song selection for an opening set I have ever had the pleasure of playing after. Keep in mind, it's impossible to recreate the feeling of the nightclub when you listen to this. The crowd, the mood, the energy, it's all missing when you just listen to the mix. You'll have to fill it in with your imagination. This is a live mix, there are volume drops and mic work.
