This speaks in no way to her professional knowledge or her skills as a teacher. Donna knows this field as well as anyone and speaks eloquently about it. We talked about: her work at MakerX and its alignment with her natural maker tendencies her definition of information architecture, and the importance of foundational structure work how IA work has changed over the years, in particular the shift from manual to automated processes the challenges of teaching structural concepts to modern UX practitioners, who tend to focus on journeys and flows the importance of metadata in digital product design how to get action-oriented designers to consider the structural side of design, and accounting for these different mindsets in your IA work her approach to teaching IA the importance of understanding how people operate, especially differences in communication styles how she teaches her students to model content how her academic background in economics prepared her to be a modeler Donna's bio Donna Spencer is an independent design consultant. The practice of information architecture used to be pretty straightforward. You organized a bunch of web pages and created navigation schemes to help readers find their way to the content. Nowadays, websites and apps are more likely to assemble and serve content on the fly. This requires a new approach. Donna Spencer has practiced IA across the lifespan of the discipline and can help you navigate these new ways of structuring and organizing information. Interview transcript Larry: Hi, everyone. Welcome to episode number 112 of the Content Strategy Insights Podcast. I am super-delighted today to have with us. Donna Spencer, Donna is currently a principle product designer at Maker, but she's been known as an information architect for a long time. I mean, I first discovered her book in ... I don't know, 15 years ago, whenever that was. So anyhow, welcome, Donna. You want to tell the folks a little bit more about what you're up to these days? Donna: Thank you very much. Well, so firstly, I just should disclose that what I'm up to at the moment is painting my new house. So, it's me, safety glasses and a lot of paint all over me. Larry: Nice. Donna: Because if anybody's looking at it going, "Why does she look so weird?" That would be why. Aside from painting an old house, because we're talking between Christmas and New Year, so this is the time when I'm not thinking much about work. As you just said, I've just joined this little new company as a principal product designer.

Have you noticed, everybody wants to be treated right. Even those who don't treat others right, want people to treat them right. Everyone wants life to be fair. Treating other people right and being treated right is often termed fair play. Before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed, the Canadian Olympic team decided to withdraw from the games because of the Covid-19 pandemic. As Canadian Olympic Committee CEO David Shoemaker said, quote "Victory isn't always about the real, relentless pursuit of a gold medal. It includes fair play and sportsmanship and now ideals about the health and safety of your community.”* Although the decision was made for health and safety concerns, note the concept that victory is more than pursuing a win. It includes how you pursue the win. It includes fair play. Being fair extends beyond athletic competition. It also includes what we say. Have you heard the phrase "That's a fair statement"? Or perhaps the words "You're right." They recognize that a statement conforms to the standard of truthfulness. Other standards for conversation also exist. Treating someone right is more than speaking the truth. It includes treating them with respect. As we look for whatever is right in this world, it is good to know that treating people right -- whether in an athletic contest or in conversation -- is still a value many hold. When approaching your information architecture, you’ll realize most sets of content can be organized in more than one way. You need to figure out which works best for your audience, your content, and your project’s goal. Donna Spencer shows you the most popular approaches, and offers tips on when and how to use each.

By now we all know that the web is not a publication - that it's a living, evolving thing. But a lot of content I see still appears to be 'published' once and then left alone. This talk is about what happens after content is published. We'll talk about how to: - decide what to create in the first place (and what the best format is) - identify which content types need to be left alone, and which need to be looked after - revive existing content and give it a second wind - check your content is still working for its readers - put it to sleep when it is time - put a process in place so you can do this yourself and with distributed content creators We'll also discuss how this varies depending on your industry, size of site and type of content. Donna’s a freelance information architect, interaction designer and writer. That’s a fancy way of saying she plans how to present the things you see on your computer screen, so that they’re easy to understand, engaging and compelling. Things like the navigation, forms, categories and words on intranets, websites, web applications and business systems. She’s been doing this professionally since 2002, is a regular speaker at Australian and international events and has just completed her third book. Donna Spencer - Information seeking behaviours

When people use websites and intranets they are doing more than just ‘finding’ information. They may be looking for something they know about or exploring something brand new; filtering through large volumes then comparing results; getting an overview of a topic or diving deep. They may even think they want to find one thing, but actually need something entirely different. Each of these information behaviours needs very different approaches to information architecture, information design and page layout. During this presentation, Donna will talk about each information behaviour, its key attributes, key design needs, and show good and bad examples of each. Getting content right - Donna Spencer

We all know that great content is a core part of the website user experience. So why is it so hard to find content that isn’t dull, lifeless and uninteresting - blah, blah, blah? Web content can be vibrant, interesting and fun. It can draw you in, fill your head and make you learn without having to think. And it’s not really hard to write. Three simple tricks can turn poor content into a great experience - remember that readers care more about themselves than you; write in real words with authentic voice; play show and tell. This presentation will discuss these principles, with plenty of funny and not-so-funny examples. You’ll go away with practical steps to make your writing kick-ass. And you won’t even have to think. Donna Spencer is a freelance information architect, mentor, writer and trainer. She has 8 years experience working in-house and as a consultant doing strategic and tactical design. She has designed large intranets & websites, ecommerce & search systems, business applications, design patterns and a CMS. Donna is an experienced speaker who has taught workshops and presented sessions at local and international conferences, on information architecture, interaction design and whatever else crosses her mind. She spends her (little) remaining time on the board of IAI and writing a book on card sorting. Sometimes she even gets time to weave and sew.
