In this episode, Mike takes us back to Florida for more stories from The Sunshine State. First, the story of Bob Ross who spent 20 years in the Air Force before showing the world The Joy of Painting. Next comes the tale of Nuestra Senora de Atocha, a Spanish Galleon lost in a hurricane in 1622 and discovered by treasure hunters three and a half centuries later. Then comes the story of the election of 1876 between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tildon, one of the most contentious in U.S. history. Marjorie Stoneman Douglas was a fearless crusader who helped bring worldwide attention to Florida’s Everglades. Hear her story next. Finally comes the tragic saga of the short life of Jim Morrison, lead singer of the band The Doors. Music for this episode comes from Florida based jump-blues band Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones (www.dougdeming.com). To find out more, visit www.miles2gobeforeisleep.com.

Свежие блюзовые релизы мы продолжаем слушать в программе «Дельта Миссисипи» с Артуром Ямпольским. Начнем с новой практически джазовой работы гитариста из Нового Орлеана Walter Wolfman Washington - «My Future Is My Past» и слушаем 2 композиции оттуда. Несколько песен звучат из нового полностью авторского альбома «Why Did You Have to Go» клавишника Anthony Geraci. Знакомимся с новой работой Doug Deming & the Jewel Tones - Complicated Mess. А также добавим еще один релиз от лейбла Alligator Records - совместный альбом в стиле традиционного блюза от Joe Louis Walker&Bruce Katz&Gilez Robson - "Journeys To The Heart Of The Blues".

This is their 10th album and they continue to prove that they can bring the Roots & Blues to the party.  I will speak with the guys about growing up in their hometowns in Canada, how the blues found them and how they found each other and formed back in 1992.  Madison Slim found Little Walter while serving in the US Air force in 1967.  He ended up in Chicago, playing with some of the best and became a member of The Legendary Blues Band and played with Jimmy Rodgers for 7 years, touring the globe.  He moved to Florida to relax and found Couch Kid Doug Deming and has been a memebr of the Jeweltones since then.   His new album is entitled Close...But No Cigar and I get to sit with Slim (and Doug and Mark Thompson) to talk about his life and new album. Mike Zito had to cancel due to a conflict

Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: I thought this was kind of funny; If Neko Case asks you to stop taking pictures with your smartphone while she’s playing, you listen to her. Otherwise, she’ll make things very tense and awkward. That’s exactly what happened to a crowd in Cincinnati who drew the alt-country singer/songwriter’s wrath after she repeatedly asked them to not take videos or photos while she was performing. Case reportedly became surly with the crowd, while several attendees stormed out or pointed some obscene gestures towards Case. Some fans have taken to the Internet to complain about Case’s attitude, but the singer has remained silent on the incident since the show ended. e-more@elmoremagazine.com The Who’s workload will be considerably lighter after 2015. The band have planned an extensive tour for that year, which marks their 50th anniversary as a group, but Pete Townshend has claimed that their Silver Anniversary tour will also be their last. Bandmate Roger Daltrey agreed with Townshend’s decision, saying that the realities of undertaking massive tours have become more and more problematic as the two have gotten older. This will not spell the end of The Who as a whole, though; Daltrey has gone on record as saying that the band will continue to work as a recording unit after their final tour. e-more@elmoremagazine.com Keeping the Blues Alive Award Recipients Announced Congratulations to the 2014 Keeping the Blues Alive Award recipients: Affiliated Organization: Crossroads Blues Society of Illinois - Rockford, Illinois Art: Cristen Craven Barnard - Senatobia, Mississippi Club: Kingston Mines - Chicago, Illinois Education: Tas Cru - Chaumont, New York Festival (International): Cazorla Blues Festival - Cazorla, Spain Festival (U.S.): Mississippi Valley Blues Festival - Davenport, Iowa Film, Television and Video: Stefan Grossman - Sparta, New Jersey Historical Preservation: George Mitchell - Fort Myers, Florida International: The Royal Mail Hotel - Goodna, Queensland, Australia Journalism: Gene Tomko - Lafayette, Louisiana Literature: Gerard Herzhaft - Lyon, France Manager: Marcia Weaver - Jackson, Mississippi Photography: Dick Waterman - Oxford, Mississippi Producer: Tom Hambridge - Nashville, Tennessee Promoter: Myron Mu - San Francisco, California Publicist: Frank Roszak - North Hills, California Radio (Commercial): Jerry Schaefer - East Islip, New York Radio (Public): Larry Lisk - St. Petersburg, Florida Record Label: Stony Plain Records - Edmonton, Alberta Special Committee Award: Blue Star Connection - Winter Park, Colorado The Blues Foundation will honor these 20 individuals and organizations during a recognition luncheon Friday, January 24, 2014, at the Downtown Memphis Doubletree. Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: The first story this week is about Led Zeppelin. If you think you’ve heard everything that Led Zeppelin have ever done, Robert Plant is here to tell you that you’re wrong. The blues-rock icon told reporters on BBC Radio that he had recently unearthed some old Led Zeppelin recordings that have yet to be heard by anyone but the band themselves. Plant said he discovered the tapes with Jimmy Page while the two were working on remastering the band’s catalog. Plant said that a few of these newly discovered recordings might make it on to the remastered Zeppelin albums, but he joked that Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones would give “two cars and a greenhouse” to make sure that some of the tapes that feature Jones on lead vocals never see the light of day. e-more@elmoremagazine.com In what may be the most unlikely collaboration ever, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones are teaming up for a duets album in tribute to the Everly Brothers. Titled Foreverly, the album consists of renditions of traditional folk songs that appeared on the Everlys’ 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. The first song from their collaboration, “Long Time Gone,” can be heard on BillieJoeandNorah.com. The album comes out on November 25th. e-more@elmoremagazine.com With the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in the U.S. coming in February, expect a wonderful barrage of black-and-white clips from the height of Beatlemania, set to a soundtrack of piercing screams. Largely buried under the gleeful cries of teenagers now old enough to share tales of seeing John, Paul, George and Ringo with their grandchildren is the music that ignited the frenzy. We'll get another kind of reminder of how powerful a live band the Beatles could be – sans the screams – with Monday’s release of “On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2.” The double CD, with 37 Beatles classics and covers, and lots of radio-show banter, comes 19 years after the first volume offered a fresh look – and listen – at the greatest pop band of them all. The song list is largely familiar, drawing from tunes the Beatles recorded for studio albums, and, to an extent, the previous compilation of BBC radio appearances. But part of the magic of the group's enduring hold across generations rests in music that sounds as new as the day it was recorded. Every version marks another gem for fans, with something different to discover, even in songs we’ve heard countless times. http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/entertainment/entertainment-news/A-New-Live-for-the-Beatles--231170551.html Speaking of the Beatles: Ringo's 'Photograph' Throughout the Beatles years, Ringo Starr was often photographed toting a camera – but he thought the pictures he shot had been lost forever. "We finally found them in a basement in storage," he says. "I was shocked. We even found two books of negatives. Who thought I was that tidy?” Now a new book, Photograph (Genesis Publications), collects his photos, plus tons of unseen images of Starr and his bandmates. Many of the photos — stemming from his childhood to his earliest days in the Beatles to candid backstage and in studio shots — have never been seen anywhere. The book is out now http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/ringo-starrs-lost-beatles-photo-album-20131108#ixzz2kLuOZEIe Blues In The Area: 11/15 FRIDAY The Christopher Dean Band - Theodores' - Springfield, MA EasyBaby - The Stonehouse (9:15pm) - Baltic, CT Dan Stevens - La Luna (5pm) - Mystic, CT Brandt Taylor - Sherwood's (9pm) - Woodstock, CT 11/16 SATURDAY Delbert McClinton - Infinity Music Hall (8pm) - Norfolk, CT The Tarbox Ramblers / Girls, Guns & Glory - Cafe Nine (8pm) - New Haven, CT Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers - Black-eyed Sally's (9pm) - Hartford The Rich Badowski Blues Band - Gibson's Bar & Grill - East Windsor, CT Dan Stevens - Guitar Workshop at Nightingale Cafe (9am) - Old Lyme, CT Dan Stevens - The Crown & Hammer Pub (9pm) - Collinsville, CT Brandt Taylor - CJ Sparrow's (9pm) - Cheshire, CT Blue Devil Bluez - Theodores' (9pm) - Springfield, MA Neal Vitullo & the Vipers w/Dave Howard - Chan's - Woonsocket, RI 11/17 SUNDAY Duke Robillard - Bridge Street Live (7:30pm) - Collinsville, CT Black-Eyed Sally’s Weekly Rundown: Wednesday Nov 13 Blues Open Mic hosted by Friday Nov 15 Michael Cleary Band Saturday Nov 16 Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers Monday Nov 18 Monday Night Jazz featured artist Tuesday Nov 19 Mike Palin’s Other Orchestra I hope to see you out and about this week but if not please continue to support live music wherever you are. subscribe-with-itunes-button

Black-Eyed News: Janis Joplin is coming to Broadway! A musical based on the life of the late singer will begin previews this fall at the Lyceum Theater in New York City. Titled An Evening With Janis Joplin, the musical has been touring the country since it debuted in Portland in 2011. Mary Bridget Davies, who played Janis in the touring musical, will reprise the role for the Great White Way. The life story of the late, great George Jones is coming to the big screen. An as-of-yet-untitled biopic of the country music legend is currently in the beginning stages of production with a target release date in the next two years. The film had been licensed by Jones himself in 2011; according to his wife Nancy, Jones had hoped to see the film before his death in April of this year. Of the script, which was penned by Dennis Baxter, Nancy Jones said that her husband’s story “would be told the way [George] wanted it told.” e-more@elmoremagazine.com The ezine that I read weekly has their 2013 Best of nominees list out and the voting begins on July 15th. http://www.thebluesblast.com/2013bbmanominees.htm Also Ctnow.com has their Best of Music Awards nominees out as well get out and vote. Black-Eyed News: The first story this week was the passing of the great singer Bobby “Blue” Bland at his home in Memphis due to complications from an ongoing illness. Bland was born in 1930 in Rosemark, Tennessee, outside Memphis. He began his career singing with a gospel group before joining the blues group the Beale Streeters, which included such future stars as B.B. King, Junior Parker and others. Bland was drafted into the Army in 1952. After his release from the service in 1954, he resumed his musical career as a solo act and established a long-term professional relationship with Duke Records. Soon he had hits racing up the R&B charts, including "I Pity the Fool" and "That's the Way Love Is." Bland often toured with his former bandmate King, and King was on hand to help induct the singer into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Bobby Bland was 83. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/24/bobby-blue-bland-dead-blues-singer-obituary_n_3488362.html The next story of the night is our friend singer/ songwriter/guitarist Chris Bergson is recording his first live album tonight and tomorrow June 25 & 26 at the Jazz Standard in NYC.The band will have a full horn section led by Jay Collins of the Gregg Allman Band. The piano was damaged after water poured through a broken levee during the August 2005 storm, flooding Domino’s home in the Lower 9th Ward. Its restoration came through $30,000 donated to the Louisiana Museum Foundation. Read more about it here: http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/05/fats-dominos-katrina-damaged-piano-restored/ The Ct music scene lost one of its own this past weekend. Grayson Minney, the lead singer and guitarist for the group Columbia Fields, was killed in a car crash early Saturday morning. According to police, Minney was on Route 85 in Hebron around 3:40 a.m. when he apparently lost control of his car. The car struck a guardrail, went airborne, and crashed into two large trees. Columbia Fields, and Grayson Minney, have long been fixtures on the Connecticut music scene. In 2010 the group won a competition to open for Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Columbia Fields also won the Hartford Advocate’s “Best Indie Band” award in 2008, 2009, and 2010. More recently, Grayson Minney was involved with the “Downtown Rocks For Newtown” benefit. Minney was 28 yrs old. http://courantblogs.com/sound-check/grayson-minney-of-columbia-fields-dies-in-early-morning-car-crash/ Blues in the area: 5/16 THURSDAY CT BLUES SOCIETY'S BAND CHALLENGE - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (8PM) - HARTFORD SEMIFINAL 4 OF 4, FINALS 6/22 WITH: SKELETON CREW EASYBABY THE MYSTIC HORNS DIZZYFISH THE DANNY DRAHER BAND SLIM HIPPO & TREMOLO SOUL TINSLEY ELLIS - THE NARROWS CENTER FOR THE ARTS - FALL RIVER, MA DAVID JACOBS-STRAIN - THE OUTER SPACE (7PM) - HAMDEN, CT BROWNBIRD RUDY RELIC - CAFE NINE - NEW HAVEN, CT 5/17 FRIDAY TINSLEY ELLIS - THE NARROWS CENTER FOR THE ARTS (8PM) - FALL RIVER, MA JEFF PITCHELL & JOHNNY A. - THE KATHERINE HEPBURN CENTER FOR THE ARTS (8PM) - OLD SAYBROOK, CT ALBERT CUMMINGS - CHAN'S (8 & 10PM) - WOONSOCKET, RI THE BOB MARGOLIS BLUES BAND & FRIENDS - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (9PM) - HARTFORD THE ARTHUR HOLMES BLUES BAND - THEODORES' - SPRINGFIELD, MA THE RICH BADOWSKI BLUES BAND - THE GIN MILL - BONDSVILLE, MA THE MOJO DUO - COALHOUSE PIZZA (9PM) - STAMFORD, CT BRANDT TAYLOR - THE LIME BAR (9PM) - SIMSBURY, CT 5/18 SATURDAY ROBERTO MORBIOLI - CHAN'S (8PM) - WOONSOCKET, RI EASYBABY - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (9PM) - HARTFORD BAD ROOSTER - SAM THE CLAM'S - PLANTSVILLE, CT THE COOL HAND BLUES BAND - THEODORES' (9PM) - SPRINGFIELD, MA JOHNNY & THE EAST COAST ROCKERS - THE KNICKERBOCKER CAFE (8PM) - WESTERLY, RI Black-Eyed Sally’s Weekly Rundown: Wednesday May 15 Blues Open Mic hosted by Ed Bradley Thursday May 16 Ct Blues Challenge sponsored by Blue Moon Beer 5 more bands looking to get to Memphis Friday May 17 Bob Margolis & Friends Saturday May 18 Easy Baby Monday May 20 Monday night Jazz featured performer Josh Evans Quartet Tuesday May 21 Tuesday May 14 Mike Palin’s Other Orchestra- Mingus de Mayo-a Celebration of Charles Mingus I hope to see you out and about this week but if not please continue to support live music wherever you are.
