Donnie Piercy (@mrpiercEy) - The 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, Donnie teaches fifth grade Lexington, Kentucky. After graduating from Asbury College and earning his master's from Auburn, he has been teaching since 2007. Donnie specializes in using technology to promote student inquiry, learning, and engagement. Over the past fourteen years of teaching, these interests have given him the unique chance to represent Kentucky around the world. Donnie was the recipient of a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship to Antarctica, and he also represents Kentucky on the inaugural National Geographic Education Teacher Advisory Council. He is the North American lead for the Google Earth Education Experts Network. Donnie has been invited to keynote and present at schools in thirty-three states and on four continents. Google News and Updates Featured Content Jake Miller is an authorized Google Apps for Education Trainer and currently serves as the Technology Integration Specialist for Brady Middle School in the Orange City School District. At BMS, Jake helps manage the implementation of Google Apps, 1:1 Chromebooks and Schoology, while working with a team to envision the building’s future integration of STEM, Project Based Learning and the school's new Fab Lab. Jake previously taught and co-created a middle school STEM Program at Kimpton Middle School in Stow-Munroe Falls, Ohio. Prior to that he taught nine years of math and science in various grades. The students created picture books after studying mentor texts. Then, they used Google Slides to create ebooks and they shared through Padlet. I am a new guy at my school (ISB) and as such I might have a different idea or two that I saw used last year. For me, I try to keep my mouth shut when it comes to uttering the dreaded “at my old school” in front of my new peers.For Technology Coach Emily Maclean, my guest today, she has an employee who not only said “at my old school…” but had his words end up creating action. Action research I mean.Emily, with the help of the Grade Six teachers Serrin Smyth, Steve Snell & Daniel Withington, trialed a set of iPads and laptops for the teachers to see what impact the dual use of those devices would have on student learning.
