Kai Huschke, with the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, talks to us about the hierarchy of community rights, states rights, and corporate rights. We look at examples of Rights of Nature laws in other countries, and why it is so difficult to have community or nature rights under the Unites States system of capitalism. Community vs corporation examples include the timber and fossil fuel industries. For more information, see https://celdf.org/. Ending song is “Occupy the USA” from the album “Revolutions Per Minute” by Emma's Revolution. https://emmasrevolution.com/. The marriage equality decade in the U.S. has come full-circle from the December 2012 Supreme Court hearings on California's Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act to the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act on December 13. A flashback to the Supreme Court's first foray into LGBTQ marriage equality sets the stage for signing the bill that spells DOMA's demise. Plus: lesbian activist singing duo Emma's Revolution builds coalitions — and that's what they've done with a cheery multi-culti holiday track from their Rooted CD. And in NewsWrap: Barbados high court overturns colonial-era sodomy laws, U.S. Congressional committee hearing links anti-queer rhetoric to hate violence, Ohio anti-trans sports ban withers as legislative session ends, Connecticut's inclusive athletics policy upheld in federal court, Brittney Griner vows to play ball despite Russian trauma, "Hawai'i's Last Princess" leaves a lesbian legacy, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Melanie Keller and David Hunt (produced by Brian DeShazor). All this on the December 19, 2022 edition of This Way Out! Join our family of listener-donors today at http://thiswayout.org/donate/
I participated in a wonderful holiday-themed concert with Emma's Revolution and so many other stellar artists yesterday. This song, "Pirate Santa," was my humble contribution to an otherwise beautiful collection of songs. You can see and hear the whole concert on Emma's Revolution's YouTube channel.
There are many ways to work for justice, equity, and compassion in our world, not just one role to play. Here is one model for how to frame and engage in the work. Special musical guest Emma's Revolution will add their voices to the conversation.

Medea Benjamin is one of the most dynamic and dedicated antiwar activists in the world today. In this interview with World BEYOND War's Marc Eliot Stein, Medea talks about recent progressive wins in Colombia and all over Latin America, the tragedy of the brutal but profitable proxy war in Ukraine and the many ways peacebuilders and hardworking organizations are keeping the international struggle for a livable, humane planet alive. Musical excerpt: Emma's Revolution.

On today's show Shana's co- host is Lisa Padovani! She is a dynamic costume designer, best known for her work on Party Monster, Mad Men, Gotham and Boardwalk Empire (to name only a few)... we begin: Have you all seen the show Transparent yet? Lisa just listened to an interview with creator Jill Soloway on NPR about her new book "She Wants It: Desire, Power and Toppling the Patriarchy" . Lisa loved the interview of course, Jill is fascinating, but she was noticing the challenge non gender conforming language. mostly because it is not proper english!!! Lisa has a little school teacher inside of her as she explains, and to call a singular person 'they/them/their' just isn't correct language.. Lisa muses.. we need a better word to refer to our non conforming friends! Lisa has worked with the top of the top in terms of Hollywood, but she creates a fun, down to earth and pleasant work environment for everyone. One of her "secrets" is acknowledging the cast and crew on set first thing in the morning, greeting everyone with a smile, "paying it forward, our energy carries over to one another, so having a fun peaceful workday starts with this positive gesture"... WE LOVE THAT!!! She also really seems to understand humor and the importance of keeping things light and creative. What is challenging about costume design? "when you are working with an actor you've grown up admiring your whole life, like Robert DeNiro, and he's going to be standing in front of you in his underwear and you have to dress him"...omg omg. PS, here's that L7 Doc Lisa was watching. Our second guests today are Pat Humphries and Sandy O of the band Emma's Revolution. They came into our studio amidst teaching an intuitive song-writing workshop this week at Omega! Their workshop is focused on exploring the craft of songwriting—with a focus on the issues of our times. Quote from their bio: "Songwriting is an innate human skill. As children, we spontaneously make up songs about whatever we're experiencing in our lives. In this workshop we create space that nurtures our most inspired selves. We delve into exercises that cultivate an intuitive, playful relationship with words and melody, allowing us to create songs that speak to what's in our heart." Here's a Dharma Punx Podcast to check out for mediation! https://www.dharmapunxnyc.com/ Also check out Shana's new Depeche Mode cover/music video STRIPPED. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJYsafm2L8 Today's show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org. Liesl Tommy, Tony-nominated director of ECLIPSED, discusses her career and the show, which made history as the first Broadway show with an all-Black and all-female cast and creative team. ECLIPSED, the story of five women during the Liberian civil war, is playing at the Curran Theater in San Francisco through March 19. I will interview acclaimed writer, poet and activist Aya de Leon at Women's International League for Peace & Freedom's inaugural Peace Talk next Sunday, March 19. Tune in tomorrow for a little preview of that conversation. The feminist singing duo Emma's Revolution, known for their harmonies and brilliant political songwriting, celebrates the release of their fourth CD this Tuesday, March 14 at the Freight & Salvage. Half of the duo, Sandy O, tells us about some of her favorite artists and what it's like to travel and make music with your ex. The post Womens Magazine – March 13, 2017 appeared first on KPFA.
Let your soul be stirred by Emma's Revolution, a duo of award-winning activist musicians Pat Humphries and Sandy O., described as "heartfelt and fervent" by The New York Times. They were featured at the Parliament performing "Peace, Salaam, Shalom," a song written in response to 9/11 that caught fire around the world as a theme song for the peace movement. Pat and Sandy share this and other songs—from haunting to humorous—along with the powerful stories connected to them.
,p>A number of musicians sharing their songs about the environmental issues of our day (and progress being made) - fracking, frac sand mining, the loss of the honeybees, global warming, incineration, fossil fuels, and mining. Includes Si Kahn, Tom Neilson, Chuck LeMonds, Emma's Revolution, and Alice Di Micele.
Pat Humphries & Sandy O are Emma's Revolution and they use their music in the service of activism and, as their web site notes, they're "like Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart with guitars". Their latest CD, Revolutions per Minute, chronicals & participates in many of this year's dramatic movements & concerns - like Iraq, Arab Spring, the Wisconsin Uprising & the Occupy Movement. They think and sing powerfully, providing fuel for change we really can believe in!
