This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Since 1997, Envision Utah has been helping residents shape a better future for themselves and generations to come. By bringing communities together, they create thriving, welcoming and sustainable places to live and grow. CEO Ari Bruening joins us with more. Ari Bruening: Being one of the fastest-growing states in the country comes with a lot of challenges — from housing to water to education and so much more. Envision Utah began as a group project to deal with these. 28 years later, we still believe that if we come together to really understand our challenges — and understand each other — we can build a great future. There are a lot of questions we're all going to have to answer together over the coming years: like how do we build enough new homes without giving up the great outdoors we love? Or how do we use water in the best ways so that we have enough for people, for food and for our lakes and rivers? What does the future of education need to look like to prepare the next generation to thrive? Envision Utah is the place where Utah comes together to find answers. Derek Miller: Envision Utah brings residents together to discuss how the state can improve. They work on various projects to shape Utah's future. By bringing communities together, they create thriving, welcoming and sustainable places to live and grow. Visit envision utah dot org to learn more about their current initiatives and how you can get involved today. I'm Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. This is Derek Miller of the Salt Lake Chamber with your Utah Business Report. Envision Utah, along with Utah Workforce Housing Advocacy, has released a new report on Utahns' perceptions of the state's housing situation. The research, conducted in late 2024, included a survey of approximately 600 adults and a multi-day online focus group with 36 people from different backgrounds, who shared their thoughts on housing in 20 to 40-minute sessions. The report reveals that most Utahns agree there is a housing problem and that we must build more homes to increase supply and drive down prices. Key findings not only include concerns about housing supply and availability, but also the importance of access to opportunities, especially for low-income individuals and first-time homebuyers, and the need to balance quality of life with adding new housing. This episode discusses a white paper the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) recently released with Envision Utah titled, “What Matters Most to Utahns? Envision Utah Survey Results by Gender.” In November 2021, Envision Utah conducted an online survey of 800 citizens to identify the values and priorities that are most pressing for Utahns. The sample was stratified along the lines of age, gender, and race to reflect the demographic composition of Utah. The survey asked respondents to identify their most pressing concerns; other questions asked about their quality of life, attitudes about population growth, and views of diversity and inclusion. Dr. Susan Madsen, Founding Director of the UWLP, is joined by the report's lead author, Eric Dahlin, an Associate Professor of Sociology at BYU, and Jason Brown, Vice President of Education and Communications at Envision Utah. I have said to my family and friends on many occasions “if you want to see where the nation is heading pay attention to Utah and Texas.” These two states are the places where people who seek to subvert the agency of man will attack with the greatest ferocity. This because both of these states are unique in both their history and culture. Those who seek to install tyranny in America understand that if they can get rid of freedom in these two states the rest will be significantly easier. We have known for quite some time now that one of the ways the enemies of freedom seek to get rid of mankind's free agency is by hiding behind front organizations with innocuous sounding names. Today on the podcast I have back on Chelsie Hope. She is a woman who has devoted the past few years of her life to being a watchdog on freedom issues here in Utah. Today Chelsie and I have a conversation about the group Envision Utah. We talk about what Private-Public Partnerships are and why you should be extremely cautious of such groups, the history of Envision Utah and who the founding members were, who the players are today, what they seek to accomplish, and finally who some of the special advisors are in Envision Utah and if you're a Mormon you might be surprised at one of those names. At the end we wrap up with what you can do to help stop this totalitarian nightmare. Now many of you who don't live in Utah may say “that's a Utah problem” well yes but I guarantee you that in your state you have very similar organizations that you need to be on the lookout for. Stay tuned for a fascinating conversation. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Utah is the fastest growing state in the nation and with that comes challenges that Envision Utah helps to solve. It was founded in 1997, and since then over 100,000 Utahns have participated in its efforts. President and CEO Ari Bruening explains their vision. ARI BRUENING Utah is growing because it's a great place to live — a great economy, unmatched outdoors, family-friendly communities. Those who grow up here often choose to stay, and out-of-staters want to join us. Unless we want to give up the things that make Utah great, we're going to keep growing. So, the question we have to ask is how should we accommodate growth to preserve the things we love. We know a lot of the right answers. We need more housing in every community. We need great transportation and cleaner cars. We need to continue to use less water, invest in teachers, and prepare for disasters. We also need Utahns everywhere to be part of creating a bright future. Growth will bring challenges, but if we're all working together to find solutions, Utah will continue to be a beautiful, prosperous, safe, and neighborly place for all of us. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Envision Utah is a non-profit that brings people together to discuss best of class objectives to guide our State's growth. But how do you do that in a pandemic when people can't meet? President and CEO, Ari Bruening, is here to talk about what they're doing. ARI BRUENING At Envision Utah, we hold lots of public and stakeholder meetings, which can be hard when people are working from home. However, since our meetings have gone online, attendance and participation have actually increased. We've also gotten creative in engaging the public through things like online chat boards, digital focus groups, and surveys. Even when people head back to the office, these new tools will remain a part of our work. We're also working with partners to help ensure that Utah's air quality and traffic improvements that have resulted from the pandemic don't evaporate as we return to a new normal. The pandemic's impacts have highlighted some economic, health, and education disparities in our society that we need to address, and together we're working on those issues too. There are a lot of challenges that need to come to the table to solve—even if it's a virtual table. Envision Utah, a Utah nonprofit organization is dedicated to answering this question. Their mission is to help build communities in a manner which will maintain both quality of life and create a more harmonious balance between suburban or urban living and the environment. We talk to its president and CEO, Ari Bruening on the Utah Stories Show and discuss what we can do to build the better Utah for tomorrow.
