Dr. Armstrong explains what makes the adolescent so amazingly powerful and talks about how we can tap its wonders in the middle school and high school level with simple interventions such as bringing emotion into learning, providing students with physical movement as they learn, incorporating real life experiences like internships and apprenticeships, and helping students understand how their brains work. Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D. is the author of 20 books including his latest, a novel called Childless. His other books include The Power of the Adolescent Brain, Neurodiversity in the Classroom, 7 Kinds of Smart, Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom, and The Human Odyssey. There are over 100 foreign editions of Dr. Armstrong's books in 30 languages. Dr. Armstrong has given over 1000 keynotes, workshop presentations, and lectures on six continents in 29 countries, and 44 states in the past thirty years. His clients have included Sesame Street, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the European Council of International Schools, the Republic of Singapore, and several state departments of education. He has written articles for Family Circle and Ladies Home Journal, as well as a column for Parenting Magazine. Key Takeaways “What were they thinking?” A lot of things are going on in the teenage brain that were not going on 2-3-4 years ago. It's amazing that teenagers are as reasonable as they are given the neurological changes and growth happening within the teenage brain. The teenage brain can often seem that they have their foot on the gas pedal, but the brakes haven't been installed yet. They have an insatiable need for new experiences. The teenage brain fully develops around the age of 22-23. Giving teens the chance to make choices and take responsibility is important for their mental growth. Help your teen to self-regulate their emotions. Help them understand what the triggers are and then help them develop their own strategies on what they can do about it. Teens are looking for leadership, people who can help them learn things. Be sure that they are learning from people who have their best interest in mind. Help them find mentors in their area of interest so they can have hands on experience. The teenage brain is seeking reward. Social media plays a huge role in that need. Parents can tab into rewarding their teen in ways that satisfy that need without giving way to social media. We are born as geniuses with the joy and passion to learn. Over time, that can be diminished. As parents we can stop suppressing the things that they love to do. Let them have the experiences that help them decide what they want to move towards. Susie Storey is the Communications & PR Strategist for Storey to Story Communications, a public relations firm focused on helping attractions industry suppliers amplify their stories. Susie has worked in the attractions industry her entire career, mostly in public relations, at organizations that include Disney, Six Flags, Universal, Cedar Fair, Give Kids the World, Great Wolf Lodge, SeaWorld Parks & Resorts, and IAAPA. In this interview, Susie talks about planting seeds through PR, storytelling for suppliers, and leveraging ambassadors.   Planting seeds through PR "The places to plant your stories have changed." The way that people consume content has evolved substantially over the years. Previously, companies would seek media recognition through traditional publishing and newspapers, or publications like Good Housekeeping and Parenting Magazine. Many of these outlets no longer exist - at least not in the same form - which has changed the way that businesses should think about getting their message out. Susie talks about the importance of earned publicity, or publicity that you are not buying, in your PR strategy. Gone are the days of striving for millions of impressions, because we need to think about not just the amount of people we're reaching, but if we are reaching the right people. Social media, publications, and podcasts are all avenues for communication, and the way in which they are leveraged is key to their success.   Storytelling for suppliers "Gone are the days of throwing every message to the wall and hoping they all stick." Historically, suppliers in the attractions industry have relied on traditional marketing and communications to get the word out about their product in an attempt to reach their target demographics - the attraction's operators. However, by pulling back, there are opportunities to get creative with how the messages are broadcast and how the stories are told. For example, when a theme park gives a roller coaster a fresh coat of paint, the business relationship is between the paint company and the park operator, but the interest extends into the enthusiast community, where the appeal of the story can be magnified. Suppliers are not necessarily trying to reach guests, which include families and parents, but by doing so they can turn their work into human interest stories.   Leveraging ambassadors "If you're going through a tough time as a company, you want your ambassadors there to support you." Guests can be citizen journalists, and your employees can and should be ambassadors of your business. From an employee standpoint, it's a challenge to create a policy on whether they can post on behalf of the organization. Susie's recommendation is to have an evolving policy that can set a framework for what employees can share and what they cannot, recognizing that employees will post online regardless. For guests, building advocacy in the guest experience is also a form of planting seeds that you won't know when you'll need to harvest. When a business experiences a crisis, it is often the most loyal guests who come to the company's defense and set the record straight. This includes building relationships with enthusiast organizations, bloggers, and other groups that carry influence over your reputation. When asked about advice for aspiring PR professionals, Susie says that people need to be able to write and communicate, as well as wear multiple hats in their roles. PR is more than party planning!   To reach Susie, you can connect with her on LinkedIn, or reach out directly at storeytostory@gmail.com.   This podcast wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of our amazing team: Video editing by Abigail Giganan To connect with AttractionPros: attractionpros@gmail.com

It could be related to their sensory processing!" -Your Kids TableOne day I was chatting to my girls on IG about how frustrating it is that my son is always running into things and seems so "wild." What You Will Learn: How Lamar and his wife Ronnie went into business and created the Black and Married with Kids blog, learning leadership skills and growing it into a powerhouse brand How, after achieving their first million in revenue, Lamar realized that the next necessary step was to focus on further education and finding the right mentors Why being a successful entrepreneur isn't the same as being a great leader, and why the growth of your business depends on learning leadership skills How Lamar was able to utilize his strong marketing skills to attract talented new team members What unique considerations Lamar and Ronnie have had to make as first-generation entrepreneurs looking to create generational wealth for their kids Why Lamar has made what a prospective employee does in their personal time a key consideration in the hiring process Why building a great team so that your business doesn't depend entirely on you is crucial for growth How a strong meeting cadence of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual meetings has been a big component in the success of Lamar's company Why a successful business needs both team members with big, bold ideas and with careful planning skills Why one of the biggest things Lamar sees that slows down entrepreneurs is allowing their focus to be spread too thin About Lamar Tyler: Lamar and Ronnie Tyler are the husband-and-wife power pair behind Black and Married with Kids, the largest independent African American marriage and parenting site on the web. Lamar and Ronnie were so fed up with the pervasive, negative and distorted images of black marriage that they channeled their frustration into a passion for curating online media properties that celebrated and honored black families. Armed with this vision and expertise in social media, Lamar and Ronnie have taken Black and Married with Kids from a small personal blog to an international brand under their own Tyler New Media, they now have 7 independently produced films and over 540,000 Facebook fans. Black and Married with Kids has been recognized and honored by some of America's most established and respected media outlets. In 2010, Black and Married with Kids was named by Parenting Magazine as one of 2010's Must-Read Blogs. In the same year, Lamar and Ronnie were inducted into Babble's Top 100 Bloggers Hall of Fame. In 2012—for the second year in a row—they were included as two of Ebony Magazine's Power 100, a list of country's top 100 African-American movers and shakers, keeping company with President Barack Obama, Beyoncé Knowles, and Jay-Z. In 2014, the Tylers were finalists for the Black Enterprise Family Business of the Year Award. And in 2015, the Tylers were also named finalists for Infusionsoft's Small Business ICON award. Today on the show I speak to American midwife, birth educator and freebirther Augustine Colebrook. We talk about her 3 births which include a 5 kg baby, a postpartum haemorrhage and shoulder dystocia which she handled by herself at home. We also talk about birth trauma, birth sovereignty and debate about the law of attraction. While I don't agree with everything Augustine says and we go around in circles at times - I do love a healthy debate and differing opinions, and I hope you do to . Enjoy! About Augustine: Augustine is a nationally recognized midwifery educator, experienced business executive, and veteran midwife with a heart focused on the underserved. She respects a woman's need for the empowering feeling of being undisturbed during labor. She balances this attention to the sacred with 20 years experience attending births in hospitals, birth centers, and homes in rural, urban and suburban environments in the US and abroad. Augustine's focus is finely attuned to the process of letting go and opening to the unknown in labor and in life. Her life's mission is to mainstream midwifery and deconstruct the culture of fear and misinformation that surrounds the maternity world. To that end, Augustine 'midwife's the midwife' through her many education programs, consulting services, product development, podcast and private coaching services for midwives, students, maternity practice owners, and birth center administrators. It is her profound honor to illuminate the sacred path to joyful and sustainable midwifery practice. She has been teaching midwives and students for more than a decade and delights in seeing the 'lightbulb' when a new skill or concept is mastered. Augustine caught her first client's baby on Mother's Day 1999 in South Carolina. Over the last 20 years she has been blessed to work with over a 1000 families and hundreds of students. She is a certified professional midwife and a member of the Midwives Alliance of North America, a preceptor with 8 different MEAC accredited schools nationwide, a certified preceptor with the North American Registry of Midwives and a member of the Association of Midwifery Educators. Her newest creation is the Worldwide Midwifery Podcast, uniting the midwives of the world through sharing information, education, support and story. Augustine has been interviewed for Mothering, Parents, and Parenting Magazine, is featured in a chapter of "The Business of Baby" by Jennifer Margulis and appears in the documentary, "The Vaccine Wars" on Frontline NBC.  Additionally, Augustine has a master's degree from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA where she majored in Maternal/Child Health Systems. In her spare time, Augustine leads adventure retreats for women hesitant about the unknown. She loves to travel and is passionate about real food, sustainable communities and clean energy, tiny houses and safe birth that feels sacred.

Happy Mother's Day! On a special day like this, you always wonder what moms really want. Even my husband asked me what I wanted. I quickly responded, "Seriously...Nothing! Just to spend time together." Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact When I googled what moms really want, I wasn't surprised to find all the articles mentioning the material stuff. Parenting Magazine included a spa day, a clean house, a day to herself, sleep, a day off from the mom routine, carwash, a hone-DONE list, and dinner planned and fixed for a week. Now all of that sounds fabulous! But what does mom really want? What does she hope for? Mother's Day was officially established in the United States in 1914 where President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law. However, Anna Jarvis (daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis) started the movement to honor her mother. Every girl was presented with a white carnation when they were in church. What would moms really want if we took it back to the golden olden days where it all began? Faith and Love! Are we doing our part for those who are placed in our path? The K.I.S.S. ~ Reflection! There is no substitute for modeling a relationship with Christ. Are you a different person, at work, at church, and at home? Your habits reflect a Christ-like lifestyle. What do your actions reflect? Take My Spouse, Please (Trumpeter Books) In love as in comedy, timing is everything. One bad night doesn't mean it's time to quit. Have patience: great marriages, like a successful comedy career, take time. Turns out the cardinal rules of comedy have an uncanny resemblance to the “rules” of building a strong marriage. With humor and grace, writer and comedian Dani Klein Modisett shares a map for navigating your marriage through rough patches, bad jokes, and even nights when you bomb. Take My Spouse, Please shows how thirteen tried-and-true rules of comedy, when applied to marriage, keep you and your spouse connected, enjoying each other, and getting through those inevitable tough times. Bottom line: there is (almost) always room to laugh at a trying situation and, more important, with each other. Along with anecdotes from well-known comedians, comedy writers, marriage counselors, and long-term spouses, Dani delivers the core premise: humor matters. Praise for Take My Spouse, Please “This book makes you realize how valuable laughter is in a marriage. Buy it for your spouse and add years to your relationship.”—Ben Stiller “A wonderful, humorous read for anyone in a marriage or thinking of being in one. My wife, Estelle, and I had the good fortune of being married for sixty-five years. When anyone asked her about making a marriage last, she always replied, ‘Marry someone who can stand being with you.'”—Carl Reiner “My wife and I are either killing or bombing in our marriage, and Dani Modisett's book explains how that's actually a good thing. Finally, some validation that a marriage between two insane people can be a beautiful thing.”—Jim Gaffigan, comedian “Having been married for twenty-seven years and writing about relationships for thirty-five years, I can see that Dani Modisett has captured the straight truth in this book. If you aren't laughing through the years, you aren't sticking together through the years. Sustaining a marriage is tough stuff, and this book, crammed with stories of resilience and humor, is proof that it is possible.”—Iris Krasnow, best-selling author of The Secret Lives of Wives “In her quest to get more humor into her family life, Modisett has written a book with great passion and huge heart. A delight for anyone who is, was, or might ever be married.”—Ayelet Waldman, author of Love and Treasure “Filled with humor, aspirational stories, and practical tips, Take My Spouse, Please helped me reflect on my most cherished relationship: my marriage. It made me feel hopeful about what it takes to stay connected, to grow, and most important, to keep laughing together—always.”—Mallika Chopra, author of Living with Intent “A welcome relief from typical how-to marriage manuals. Highly recommended for everyone who wants more joy and more love in their relationship.”—Ken Page, author of Deeper Dating “Other than having sex, I can't think of anything better for two people who love each to do than to laugh together. Modisett knows this and delivers a book with inspiring stories of happy marriages and highly doable advice to help couples of all kinds.”—Jill Soloway, writer and comedian “For many Irish Catholics, the idea of leaving a marriage after vowing to stay is an idea that if acted upon will lead to eternal damnation. In Dani Modisett's funny, insightful book, she provides wonderful examples of many marriages that last because of shared happiness and understanding rather than fear of a forever spent in hell.”—Mike O'Malley, producer, writer, and actor “My life's work is all about comedy, love, and laughter. Dani manages to look at the most important love relationship we have—our marriage—and see it through the lens of a comedian, coming up with meaningful ideas that can't help but provide results. What a book!”—Yakov Smirnoff, stand-up comedian and actor “I got married six months to the day after I met my now-husband. Best and most irrational thing I have ever done. People laughed at me. Now I know why my marriage works so well—it's because we were two physicians inadvertently following the rules of comedy. Dani nails it, prescribing strategies to keep relationships healthy, honest, and fun.
