Erin shares how her path in music and education pulled her along every step of the way, why surrounding herself with a brilliant team has always been key to her success, and proves that a willingness to embrace the uncomfortable can lead us to the career paths we're meant to have. And that was a tough pill to swallow, but once I swallowed it that's when all the good stuff in my life started happening.” (07:05) “Once I had been at Berkley for a few years, I realized that my real power is in helping people. And that by being that person who facilitates another person to succeed, that is actually one of the most powerful positions you could be in.” (14:08) “I think that creating culture is a really important thing, in a classroom and a workplace, because you want to facilitate people to be their best selves.” (18:03) “For me, success means that when I hear about somebody else winning, especially if I identify as somebody similar to them, that the only emotion I feel is pride and being happy for another individual. Shedding that sense of competition that the music industry embedded in me, that's success.” (35:58) “It's important to create a culture in your workplace where people feel safe. And that just helps you because then they'll feel safe to tell you when something's wrong.” (43:48) Links Mentioned: Dino's Email https://www.instagram.com/al4edp/ (Dino's Instagram) https://twitter.com/al4edp (Dino's Twitter) https://authenticleadershipforeverydaypeople.com/ (Authentic Leadership for Everyday People Website) https://www.facebook.com/al4ep/?ref=page_internal (Authentic Leadership for Everyday People Facebook) https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-barra/ (Erin's LinkedIn) http://mammabarra.com/ (Erin's Website) https://www.beatsbygirlz.org (Beats by Girlz Website) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Berklee and Women in Music recently released the first-ever study of women working in the music industry. Erin Barra, who helmed the project, and researcher Becky Prior delve into the report's process, its findings, and how the industry can do better.
Normally, I introduce you to one woman leaving her unique stain on the world without letting BS or burnout stop her. Well, surprise! Today, I’m bringing back seven previous Le vital corps Salon guests. We’re going to different perspectives on a topic that can help your 2019 more of a success. Join me in welcoming the women in this here virtual roundtable: Minda Harts, Erin Barra, Rachel Citron, Dara Kass, Kelly Lyndgaard, Kara Rota, and Patti Wilson. (You can find their cred, links, and news in the Resources section below). I want to acknowledge Minda Harts for inspiring and opening this episode with me. All of these amazing women span different industries and are at different stages of their careers. They’ve mentored, been mentored, and/or sponsored along the way. So, that, friends, is what we’re covering – mentorship and sponsorship. While we’re in that mid-holiday season lull, you might be percolating on what you want to stop doing, keep doing, or start doing. Perhaps you want to launch a business, grow in your current role, find a new job, or begin a new passion project. Whatever it is you’re considering, it’s your relationships with others that can help you achieve any of these things. Another surprise! There are not one, but two, episodes this week as part of this special, year-end Mentor Sponsor Mashup. It’s broken up into two parts because everyone had so much to share. When producer Craig and I sat down with the raw conversations, it clocked in at nearly 6 hours! We worked really hard to distill it down into something empowering, yet manageable. Here’s what to expect from each episode: Part 1 focuses on my guests’ own experiences around mentorship and sponsorship. We also discuss the differences between these two types of professional relationships. Part 2 goes deeper into mentorship and gets more strategic about how to create a successful mentor or sponsor relationship. We get more practical. We hear how some of the guests have navigated around or bounced back from some awkward moments. Whether you’re considering mentorship (as a mentor or mentee) or sponsorship in the immediate future or not, Minda, Erin, Rachel, Dara, Kelly, Kara, and Patti offer up a ton of collective insight and wisdom. All of which can be applied across other facets of business and life. After all, mentorship and sponsorship are about connection and support. Who couldn’t use a little more of that, right? This quilt of a conversation was a blast to stitch together. I deeply hope you enjoy Part 1 and Part 2 of The Mentor Sponsor Mashup! Don’t forget to hop on the newsletter right here. You’ll always be a reply away, and I’d love to here what you learned and what you plan on applying this year. In this episode of Signal Flow, Erin Barra and Loudon Stearns decode the Berlin-based trio's propulsive “three on the floor” track and how they use a variety of fake-out techniques to keep the listener on their toes. This episode was engineered by Darcy Davis.
A self-described 'Creative Swiss Army Knife', Erin Barra is a wealth of knowledge, experience and opinion. She is an assistant professor at Berklee School of Music, a dedicated artist and producer, and an industry consultant for everything musical. Here demo reel is amazing - but so are some of her accomplishments, including the development of the Beats By Girlz (https://www.beatsbygirlz.com/) project. But it is Erin's willingness to share her ideas and opinions that makes her a great conversationalist. In our chat, we talk about her background, appreciation of audiophilia, view of song-writing in all of its appearances and perspectives on education. This was an inspiring chat - I felt like it was an education in itself. I hope that you enjoy the discussion, and take the opportunity to check out her site (http://erin-barra.squarespace.com/). Enjoy!
In this episode, Erin Barra B.M. '06 talks about her anti-tech roots, walks us through the production of a new song, and discusses why she pushes students to use technology to help achieve their vision.
Erin Barra is a musician, songwriter, teacher, and performer specializing in the convergence of music and technology. She has created music curriculum for students of all ages, including Beatz for Girlz, which specializes in bringing music production to young women and Berklee College of Music. She's worked with Grammy-winning artists and is a powerful voice in the world of music technology and education. Erin and I had a great conversation about a wide range of topics including education, creativity, and some of our favorite creative tools. Listen on iTunes or Stitcher or Google Play Support the Podcast on Patreon Show Notes: Mammabarra.com - Erin's website Beatz by Girlz - Erin's mission to bring music production to young women Matthew Herbert's Manifesto Izotope (We spoke about so much of their stuff, I swear this wasn't a paid promo!)
Some might call her a Jill of all trades, but Erin “Mamma” Barra prefers Creative Swiss Army Knife. Within the world of music, she’s a pragmatic troubleshooter who adeptly knows what skill or tool to apply at the right moment. The breadth of her skill set – as an educator, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and music technology consultant over 20 years - makes Erin a key player in the creative process of many projects from conception to final master to stage performance. When she’s involved, people are able to realize and execute their ideas. The people she works with are Grammy-winning artists, engineers, and producers as well as indie artists. Additionally, she has released 5 studio albums as an independent solo artist. That’s some serious cred. Erin also shares her knowledge and experience while connecting other women. She is an Associate Professor in the Songwriting Department at Boston's Berklee College of Music and one of the leading product specialists for Berlin-based music software company, Ableton. Additionally, Erin has developed, taught and executed several music technology programs, including Beats by Girls for K-12 girls. She also is on the Board of Women in Music, where she contributes to building awareness, support, and opportunities for other women in the musical arts. During our conversation, Erin shares how she reconciled how identifies with her work versus how other others have perceived how she does, especially when navigating career transitions. Erin also opens up about the detrimental impacts of chronic stress to her body, creativity, and productivity. She also walks us through some (no surprise here) really practical tools and habits that have helped her turn around stress and stuckness. Do not miss this episode with Erin.

My last assignment, week three, Blues improvisation... Thank you to Erin Barra, my teacher.
After literally years of working on this EP and waiting for the right time to release it, today is finally here. True to it's title, ‘Undefined' is a collection of songs and recordings which came from the heart and don't fit inside a box. The amount of growth and transition I've experienced since this process began is somewhat astounding – as I'm sure those of you who have been following my journey will agree. Here's to the next step and staying true who I am as a creator, which is largely undefined. In what is an extremely volatile music industry, the fact that you care about my music means everything. If you are so inclined and would like to help spread the good word please think about writing a review on iTunes, adding songs from Undefined to your favorite playlist on Spotify, share a link from Facebook or Twitter or purchasing a download. I appreciate any and all support in my attempts to make this world a more listenable place : ) Barra is the first artist to publish an entire album on the site. Working with Blend and their community of remix artists has the potential to saturate the market and reach new audiences with hundreds of re-imagined versions of Undefined tracks—house mixes, reggae and Bollywood versions that catapult her pop sound into a different genre.

THE VERY TALENTED ERIN BARRA STOPS BYE TO DISCUSS HER CAREER & DEBUT HER NEW ALBUM "ILLUSIONS" If Alicia Keys and Nelly Furtado collided with Daft Punk and Esthero in the vast circuitry of an Akai APC 40, you'd probably end up with an experience as rich and soulful as Erin Barra. Joining the likes of MNDR and Tokimonsta, Erin is part of a brave new digital audio live performance armada of female artists riding a tech savvy wave of musical and electronic innovation. Her incomparable style has been praised by Grammy award-winning legends. She has graced the stages of the most sought after venues in New York City. Her musical skill and versatility is virtually second to none. Yet and still, it's hare to believe the world came pretty close to missing out on the full range of such an explosive talent. “I never really thought I was going to be an artist,” she concedes. “I always knew I had a passion for writing music and creating content. But I guess I always envisioned someone else singing the songs.”

Her incomparable style has been praised by Grammy award-winning legends. Her musical skill and versatility is virtually second to none. Hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, Erin was reared on her parents’ dusty record collection of AM radio singer/ songwriters James Taylor and Simon & Garfunkel. Erin’s spectacular talent caught the golden ear of John Oates, half of soul/ pop duo Hall & Oates. Erin was paired up with the legendary musician after winning a fiercely competitive songwriting competition. With the advice of Oates in tow, Erin made her move to New York City with the goal of developing her craft as an artist and live performer. H.I.S.D There’s a renaissance occurring before your eyes and this crew is right in the middle of it. This group of forward thinking music junkies have come together and formed H.I.S.D. H.I.S.D. was born in 2005 through the collaboration of eight artists of varying mediums wanting to introduce a refreshing perspective to the sound and visual aesthetic of hip hop culture, classic soul music, poetry, visual art, fashion, and photography. Mutual respect and appreciation for the cultural significance and influence achieved by creatively bridging these art forms, brought Savvi, Equality, LdaVoice, Scottie Spitten, Jason Woods, and producers King Midas and E-Classic together to form H.I.S.D. The group’s projects have gotten co-signs from Questlove of The Roots and Phonte of Little Brother / Foreign Exchange.
