In this episode of Female Voices: Life and Loss, cohosts Teresa and Wayna dive into the complexities of family relationships and how they influence healing and growth. Sharing insights from their own families, they discuss everything from raising children and learning from grandparents to navigating marriage and communication challenges. The conversation highlights the importance of fostering individuality in children, embracing shared responsibilities within the household, and finding ways to grow both personally and as a family unit. Teresa and Wayna also explore how cultural expectations around gender roles and parenting styles can shape family dynamics, ultimately emphasizing connection, understanding, and compassion. Key Takeaways: Compassion and communication are the foundation of strong relationships. Leading with empathy and practicing open, honest dialogue strengthens family bonds and fosters healing. Children thrive when they are encouraged to express their individuality. Supporting their unique identities builds confidence and resilience while teaching them the value of authenticity. Adult conversations and shared responsibilities are essential for personal and familial growth. Prioritizing meaningful discussions and balancing household duties promotes harmony and deeper connections. Parenting styles and family dynamics evolve with intention. Tailoring parenting approaches to meet the unique needs of boys and girls and showing children healthy family dynamics helps them navigate life. Commitment and understanding create strong foundations in marriage. Approaching challenges with a “divorce is not an option” mindset can foster a sense of security and teamwork. Cultural and generational influences shape how families function. Learning from grandparents and understanding cultural expectations can guide families in creating more inclusive and adaptable dynamics. Healing is a process that requires patience, understanding, and connection. Families grow stronger by embracing change, prioritizing love, and creating space for each member's unique journey. Sound Bites: "Divorce was never on the table." "Communication is a big piece." "We need adult conversation." Mentioned in This Episode: Reflections on lessons learned from grandparents. Strategies for balancing individuality and shared responsibilities in families. Insights into marriage, parenting, and cultural influences on gender roles.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #Asheru #interview session! A few weeks ago, we were extremely surprised here at Southern Vangard Radio when we found out Asheru, Wayna, & DJ Roddy Rod had come together to form a new group called The Philosopher’s Stone - not to mention the first joint they dropped, “What Do We Have To Lose”, blew us away. So it was perfect timing to for us to get Ash on the horn for a good 70+ minutes to talk about the new group, his refined approached since his last LP, how hip-hop continues to take him around the globe and what the temperature is like in the nation’s capital since the presidential election. We also dig in DEEP to some incredible Boondocks stories - if you didn’t know, not only did Ash pen the opening and closing theme for the show - he also won a Peabody Award for Journalism for his contributions to the “Return of the King” episode. Wayna (known by the real name Woyneab Miraf Wondwossen) is an Ethiopian-born American R&B singer. It has been said that Grammy-nominated, Ethiopian-born, singer/songwriter, Wayna has a voice as pure as it is passionate. Stevie Wonder says "she's incredible." Essence Magazine says she is “one to watch," and Billboard Magazine calls her "a stand out on the indie front." With two Billboard chart-topping singles from her sophomore LP, Higher Ground, and a coveted Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance Category for her remake, “Lovin You (Music)" featuring Kokayi, Wayna's star is on the rise. "The Expats" is the third and latest LP from this innovative artist and represents a new and daring departure from her previous work. The project is named after its Toronto-based backing band and production team hailing from various parts of the world -- Ethiopia to Japan, Isreal to India, Germany to Jamaica. Drawing from diverse musical influences, Wayna and the Expats create a unique blend of African and Reggae-inspired soul, fused with classic and alternative rock -- Sade and the Police meets Lauryn Hill and Radiohead. This new sound, which Wayna calls “world soul” was the result of a creative journey, jamming, writing and recording with “the Expats” in Toronto over the past 2 years. The Expats is available on ITunes and Amazon now. Wayna on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/waynamusic
Ethiopian-born, singer/songwriter Wayna possesses a voice that is as sweet and pure as it is honest and passionate. This young talent’s love for music started as a child, when she starred in theater productions like “Annie,” and “Damn Yankees” and toured with a children’s musical review company. Wayna went on to hone her vocal talents as a young adult by absorbing the works of her favorite artists, including Minnie Riperton, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway. While in college, Wayna was crowned Miss Black Unity of the University of Maryland in 1995, earning a one year tuition scholarship. After earning a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in English and Speech Communication from the University of Maryland, Wayna began her professional career as a Writer in the White House for the Clinton administration. She’s also served as a featured vocalist and writer on a number of independent projects for artists, including W. Ellington Felton, Kenn Starr, Kev Brown, Cy Young, and Tamara Wellons. Wayna received a Grammy nomination in the "Best Urban/Alternative Performance" Category in 2009, for her remake, "Lovin You" featuring Kokayi.

By now you know this show is about all things soulful. From time to time we have featured guest DJs, podcasters, and a healthy dose of international musicians with fierce showmanship! Today's Labor Day Special will help you whistle while you work. We feature the talents of Honey Soul...podcaster, dj, interviewer to the stars. I'm a fan of her podcast which has up close and personal interviews with newsmakers of the soul scene. Find Honey Soul at her homesite, iTunes, and Myspace.com. Also, she is a regular DJ at Superstation ProjectVibe.net! Be sure to get all the downloads and support her wonderful work via donation and/or online purchase of artist's tracks! We proudly give to you the one and only Honey Soul..... COA I'm a strong believer in making your own opportunities. In Oct. 2004 I created a site called honeysoul.com. Honeysoul.com's audience consists of a large number of loyal, soul music supporters who actually buy music (yes I know that's a strange concept but I'm not kidding, it still actually happens). In addition to honeysoul.com featuring my own mix of "radio blogs," full CD previews, videos, new releases, and headlines I am very proud of my interviews or "conversations" as I like to call them. I have had the pleasure of talking to Jaguar Wright, Dwele (twice), Wayna, Gaelle, Carmen Rodgers, Lina, Julie Dexter, Darien Brockington (twice), Syleena Johnson, Ladybug Mecca, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Jonz, Geno Young, Jon B, Anthony David, Goapele, Frank McComb (twice), Valencia Robinson, Eska, Javier, Esthero, Yewande, Joi, Ron Isley, Lisa Shaw, Van Hunt, Amel Larrieux, Kim Hill, Teena Marie, Donell Jones, Bilal Salaam, Sy Smith, Randevyn, Carol Riddick, Yolanda Johnson and Raheem Devaughn. Who's next? It may be you. If you're a soul artist making meaningful music, let's talk. -Honey- Honey Soul
