Ever feel like your book will never be finished? You're not alone. Every author hits that point when they doubt, question, and even want to give up. But pushing through those moments is what separates a dream from reality. Once your book is done, a whole new journey begins: publishing and sharing your message with the world. And this journey doesn't have to be one you take alone. The right strategies, partnerships, and community support can make all the difference in turning your book into a tool that amplifies your business impact. I work with authors to ensure their books reach the readers who need them most and drive meaningful engagement. My strategic book launch program focuses on building connections that matter—conversations, media opportunities, and business growth. If you're ready to take your book to the next level, schedule a complimentary book launch brainstorming session at www.BookLaunchBrainstorm.com. Now, it's my pleasure to introduce our panelists, who will share what it's really like to be a business author. Nikki Green wrote “Chameleon Mindset: Creative Ways To Embrace Change And Build Mental Resilience To Transform Your Career & Life,” an engaging, research-based guide that helps you embrace change, build resilience, and adapt with confidence using creative strategies and interactive exercises for lasting personal and professional growth.  Robyn Hatcher wrote “Standing Ovation Presentations: Discover Your Communication "Actortype" and Let it Shine,” a dynamic guide to mastering face-to-face and virtual communication, using Hollywood-inspired ActorTyping and the four Vs—Visual, Vocal, Verbal, and Value—to help you stand out, connect authentically, and shine in any interaction. Steve Yacovelli wrote “Your Queer Career: Workplace Advice from ‘The Gay Leadership Dude',” a practical and engaging guide that empowers LGBTQ+ professionals and allies to navigate workplace challenges, embrace authenticity, and thrive in their careers with expert insights, real-life strategies, and a touch of humor. Please join me in welcoming Nikki, Robyn, and Steve.  In this episode, we discuss the following:

Nearly 1 in 10 LGBTQ people in the United States experienced workplace discrimination in the last year, and almost half faced employment bias at some point in their careers, according to a new survey. The findings were published Tuesday in a report titled LGBT People's Experiences of Workplace Discrimination and Harassment by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law. It found that 46 percent of LGBTQ workers reported receiving unfair treatment at some point in their careers because of their sexual orientation or gender identity — including being passed over for a job, harassed at work, denied a promotion, or raise, excluded from company events, denied additional hours, or fired. An estimated 9 percent reported being denied a job or laid off in the past 12 months because of their orientation or identity. I'm excited to have The Gay Leadership Dude™, owner and principal of TopDog Learning Group, Dr. Steve Yacovelli. He talks about his main hustle, his success story and how he managed to ride through those difficult times. We talked more about his hiring process and how his experience has been having fans on his own.    Dr. Steve Yacovelli has been in the leadership, learning and development, change management, and diversity and inclusion consulting space pretty much his whole career (about twenty-five years). In his consulting experience he's seen some leaders completely excel in their effectiveness, and some completely crash and burn due to their lack of competence in leadership skills. Steve's desire was to help both types of leaders be more effective, through coaching, formal and informal training, and just generally being there to support their leadershippiness.   A few years ago, Steve realized that the focus on specifically developing LGBTQ+ Leaders wasn't really top of mind for many organizations. Sure, there were a few conferences sessions, some random webinars, or even university-sponsored certificate programs, but nothing in a programmatic, cross-association, and at all levels within the leadership savviness scale. In short, a patchwork of effort and not necessarily a cohesive focus or movement.   So, “The Gay Leadership Dude™” was born. It's Steve's brand to “come out” and acknowledge the role he wants to take to give back to the LGBTQ+ Community and awesome Allies: to serve as a “lightning rod” of sorts to start a movement to grow LGBTQ+ Leaders and Allies to be even more effective, in a consistent, thoughtful, and mindful manner, especially those up-and-coming Leaders within the broader movement for equality and fairness for all LGBTQ+ people and well beyond.   Find more of Dr. Steve Yacovelli, his team, courses, books, and more: Web: http://topdoglearning.biz Podcast: http://topdog.click/podcast   Grab a copy of his book: Pride Leadership https://topdoglearning.learnworlds.com/books   Giveaway!!! It was just great talking to Steve Yacovelli. I love this idea of feedback being a gift. I think it is a great gift to have access to information. Often as leaders, we're afraid of information if it doesn't align with what we believe. And so I encourage you, as you get information, to see it as information to be curious about what you knew already. What you didn't know and not to leap to an immediate. And then buy yourself time. You know, anytime you're getting feedback, that's hard to take. Just give yourself a minute to say, "Hey, let me think about that for a little while. Get back to you." It's always okay to ask for more time. It's great any time you meet with a manager and they say something to you that you are like at the moment. Just train yourself to ask for more time. It's a great leadership skill.Love the show? "You can't have authenticity without courage” Dr. Steve's desire was to help both types of leaders be more effective, through coaching, formal and informal training, and just generally being there to support their "leadershippiness." A few years ago, Steve realised that the focus on specifically developing LGBTQ+ Leaders wasn't really top of mind for many organisations. TRAILER: The concept of silent collusion. And if you're not familiar with that term, I'll give you a quick story. I was in Atlanta a couple years ago, pre pandemic, and we were doing a closing, "yeah!", "yeah!", "yeah!" We had finished a change management project and there's like 30, plus other people from the client space. And we're just about to have, you know, the final meeting, and a few were having their chitchat, and at the very head of the table was the senior executive, who literally wrote the cheques, sponsored the project, and he is important, to the story his gender... So just as we're about to start, you know, the voices are dying down and you hear that senior executive say, "well, you know, how all women drive?" And everybody just kind of stopped, looked toward his part of the table. But no one said a word...And at that exact moment, Gabby is when every single one of us in the room were engaging in silent collusion, we were because we weren't refuting what was being said, we were silently agreeing with it. EP75: 5 Ways to Create an Inclusive LGBTQ Workplace Hello Chit Chatters! Welcome back to another episode of Coaching For Millennials! In this episode we're continuing with our theme of PRIDE since it is pride month, but more importantly I want to dive deeper into the elements of inclusion and create awareness around the space of inclusion in the workplace for LGBTQ people.  I recently completed a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workplace Certification through the University of South Florida at the Muma College of Business. I learned so much in the short timeframe and although I have been active in doing toe DEI work, the more we are able to learn from each other and hear different perspectives, the awareness we can create in the spaces for others.  I mention the certification program for a few reasons. 1. I am proud to have participated in the program and to have shared it with so many people who benefited from participating in it. 2. One of the topics discussed in the program that is important to creating an inclusive workplace is Emotional Intelligence.  Now, we've talked about Emotional Intelligence a lot here on the show and we have a few episodes in season one where I have a few guests that shared their expertise on the topic, but for the purpose of this episode, I highlighted 4 areas of emotional intelligence I felt were most relevant to rolling up your sleeves and creating the space around emotional intelligence to then have a workplace that is more inclusive.  Here are the 4 elements around Emotional Intelligence: Self-Awareness Social Awareness Self-Management Relationship Management You can find more details on each of these at: https://positivepsychology.com/emotional-intelligence-framworks Moving along, you can hear all of my thoughts, experiences and opinions on how to create a space that is inclusive of emotional intelligence in the episode. Let's dive into the 5 ways to make the workplace more inclusive for LGBTQ folks Have Self-Awareness & Social Awareness Educate Yourself Don't Be Afraid To Ask Questions OR Make Mistakes Ask About Pronouns & Preferred Name Show Up: Be an Ally and Create a Community for LBGTQ People I also reference my good friend Dr. Steve Yacovelli aka The Gay Leadership Dude to learn more about his research, practice and book called “Pride Leadership”. He is a true testament to someone who is not only part of the LGBTQ community, but also a teacher and mentor.  Steve was also on the podcast back in Season 1, Episode 39 if you want to hear about our conversation on leadership, inclusion and more!  If this session brought you value today and if it impacted your life, please share it with someone who needs it. When we second guess ourselves trying to show up as others think we should, the effort of holding back, thinking, and rethinking our ideas, work even our presences diminishes us. Stay turned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening. Now on to my guest today, Dr. Steve Yacovelli, the “gay leadership dude.” Steve started out in and quickly left academia, moving to doing training and communications work for corporations, including Disney. It was while he was working for Disney he started a side business with a coworker that eventually morphed into his full-time business, Top Dog Learning Group. A meeting with a publisher prompted him to write and publish a book on leadership for the gay community, in the process taking on the moniker “the gay leadership dude.”  Steve provides training for leaders in corporations and large nonprofits to be better communicators, with a focus on fostering a more inclusive environment. He explains how anyone starting a business should give some thought to their core values so that you can then articulate those values to the people you work with, be they employees, partners, or customers. These values also can provide guidance for navigating difficult situations. He also urges the people he works with to purposely put themselves in uncomfortable situations where they will interact with people different from themselves. Among the many other recommendations Steve offers, he drives home the point that above all, empathy for others, no matter what their position or situation, should be paramount.  Now let's get better together. Actionable InsightsI asked Dr. Steve what his advice is for new entrepreneurs. Here are some takeaways: Take some time to look at the big picture. This will help you articulate your values. Where do you want to go? Who do you want to serve? What impact do you want to have?  Learn how to effectively market yourself. Start small: write a blog, be a podcast guest, or give presentations. Focus on being of service and making connections.  The secret to leadership? Trust. Work on building and earning the trust of others who will then want to work with and for you. Have empathy for others and try and see things from other perspectives. EP39: PRIDE LEADERSHIP: How to Be a More Inclusive Leader & Create a Culture Where People Can Belong with Steve Yacovelli   In this episode you're going to hear some amazing tips and processes to help anyone who is seeking to be a leader or identifies as one to learn to develop competencies and traits a leader should have and the most important trait every effective leader should hold.    One of the many important takeaways from this episodes is for people who are looking to a strong leader and one who is truly inclusive, you must    Think In Speak Up Act Out   Listen in for more on this throughout our conversations and in the book.    For Millennials, there are some great points on how to be a leader when you're struggling. One of the strategies is to not amp up your leadership courage (this is part of a chapter in the book), but to think how you're engaging and listening to your leader and them doing the same to you!    At the core of being a successful inclusive leader you should develop the following 6 competencies one at a time:   Authenticity Courage Empathy Communication Culture   Leadership is all about building relationships. Relationships are built through communication, but also have the courage to talk about things that make us uncomfortable. That courage will help establish trust.    At the very root of that foundation leadership in its most purest form is TRUST!   Effective listening is also a critical foundation to be able to support others in various landscapes of the workplace. To be a better leader you need to be an ally to somebody, show up for them. Look for ways to be a champion for others.    Steve's Book: Pride Leadership: Strategies for the LGBTQ + Leader to Be The King or Queen of their Jungle give Queer people who are often identified as other an opportunity to show up in many spaces and demonstrate leadership. It allows those seeking to be strong leaders a way to learn and take action on developing the 6 foundational competencies of leadership.    The book is intended to be read but also asking the reader to actively participate and take action while reading and learning. It is a guide that includes a workbook to help anyone grow as a leader.    To purchase the book you can go to: https://www.amazon.com/Pride-Leadership-Strategies-Leader-Jungle/dp/1946384674/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1EDKNI6Y4OK29&dchild=1&keywords=steve+yacovelli&qid=1606894877&sprefix=Steve+Yaco%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-1 About Steve Dr. Steve Yacovelli (a.k.a. “The Gay Leadership DudeTM”) is Owner & Principal of TopDog Learning Group, LLC, a leadership, change management, and diversity and inclusion consulting firm based in Orlando, Florida, USA but with affiliates (“TopDoggers”) throughout the Globe.   Steve and TopDog provide guidance and solutions in leadership and organizational development, change management, diversity and inclusion consulting, instructional design, and custom e-learning creation. So, “The Gay Leadership Dude” was born. It's Steve's brand to “come out” and acknowledge the role he wants to take to give back to the LGBTQ+ Community: to serve as a “lightening rod” of sorts to start a movement to grow LGBTQ+ Leaders to be even more effective, in a consistent, thoughtful, and mindful manner, especially those up-and-coming Leaders within the broader movement for equality and fairness for all LGBTQ+ people and well beyond.
