This episode first aired on August 7, 2024. The first deadly black bear attack in California’s history was confirmed recently in a small mountain town in Northern California. While wildlife officials say fatal bear attacks are rare, this recent death and growing encounters between bears and people underscore how high the stakes are as wild and urban worlds merge. LAist climate reporter Erin Stone takes a deeper look at bears through the lens of the mountain town of Sierra Madre, where she lives. Just 25 minutes from downtown L.A., the residents of Sierra Madre increasingly come face-to-face with black bears. Erin looks at the history of bears in the U.S., how black bears ended up in Southern California, and how Sierra Madre is choosing to respond to the black bears living in its community. Controlling urban heat is a major issue: it touches everything from health, to the environment, to your wallet. And running the AC all day can cost a pretty penny, assuming you're not one of the 20% of Angelenos who live without AC. This is where cool roofs come in. It's L.A.'s new-fangled solution that got its start a couple thousand years ago in the Mediterranean, and is now required by law for all new roofs in the city. Join LAist climate reporter Erin Stone as she takes HTLA host Brian De Los Santos down to Watts. The neighborhood received a grant to install free cool roofs, AND solar, for local residents.

But even though it might look like we're sitting on a major water surplus, all that rain and snow only covers our water needs for about a year. So... what DO you do with a water surplus? Well, you save it. Last fall, HTLA host Brian De Los Santos and LAist climate emergency reporter Erin Stone met up with a sustainability role model to get a handle on how it's done. It states that all residents and businesses must separate “green waste” from other trash. To comply, LA developed a new composting program called “organics recycling,” but roll out has been complex, especially for multifamily residences.  Today, How To LA and LAist's climate emergency reporter, Erin Stone, go to Park La Brea Apartments – the largest apartment complex on the West coast – to see how they're making composting happen for their renters.  Guests: Aryn Thomez, VP of property management at Park La Brea Apartments; Jessica Aldridge, director of sustainability at Athens Services; Erin Stone, climate emergency reporter for LAist.  Check out Erin's reporting on the roll out of the composting program. #74: At this point, we're all well aware that climate change is an ever-growing threat to our lives and our environment. We've seen the mounting evidence over the years. All the scientific reports just seem be getting worse. The future — at times — looks grim. All this can lead to a phenomenon called “climate doomism.” It's the narrative that the damage to our environment has been done and, really, there is nothing we can do about it. But this mindset is super problematic, and is making our environmental issues worse. So today, LAist's climate emergency reporter Erin Stone hangs out with Isais Hernandez, a content creator known as Queer Brown Vegan, to chat about this negative outlook and how to fight against it. Guest: Isais Hernandez, environmental educator and content creator for Queer Brown Vegan Learn more about his work here: https://queerbrownvegan.com/ OTHER RESOURCES:  If you're struggling with climate anxiety or want to learn how to fight climate doomism, check out The Climate Psychology Alliance. To find opportunities to help fight the effects of climate change locally, Climate Resolve connects communities to come up with equitable solutions.  Get involved in local organizations like Pacoima Beautiful, which was founded in 1996 by five moms who were distraught about the pollution and trash in their community. Today, the environmental justice group continues to clean up neighborhoods all over the Northeast San Fernando Valley and beyond.

Erin Stone says she has the highest level respect for operations people who work in golf considering how they build a functioning venue for spectators and vendors around a golf course, often while accounting for the rolling terrain that runs alongside the pristine tees, fairways and greens. Making those areas spectator friendly is very important for Erin in her role as tournament director of the FedEx St. Jude Invitational, a World Golf Championship event held in Memphis. Working with a global partner such as FedEx as well as having a charitable partner like St. Jude’s are also part of Erin’s role at the tournament. In this episode, Erin shares insights from her time not only working with this PGA Tour event but also with an ATP Tour tournament as well as an NHL team and the common aspects of her work regardless of the sport.
