A forest lookout sits alone in a glass tower at 2AM and spots flames crowning two distant pines — a fire only he can see. By dawn there's no smoke, no ash, no scorched earth... and no fire at all. From phantom flames that burn and vanish to the burned Bigfoot pulled from a Nevada blaze and the UFOs caught streaking through wildfire smoke, tonight we wander into the strange and unsettling things that appear when the forests burn.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/ghostflamesREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/yjwtx7awFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: The author of Frankenstein always saw love and death as connected. She visited the cemetery to commune with her dead mother. And with her lover. (Mary Shelley's Obsession With The Cemetery) *** A girl moves into a new apartment and discovers that a haunting doesn't necessarily have to be frightening. (Ghostly Happenings In My Old Apartment) *** The July 1886 murder at the Shawmut Avenue laundry was so shrouded in mystery that even the victim's name was uncertain. (The Wash-House Murder) *** Ghosts, high strangeness, and even Bigfoot – it appears they may all have something in common, and that would be forest fires. (Forest Fires and the Paranormal) *** How do you explain an experienced lookout reporting a blazing forest fire, only for it to disappear less than an hour later – leaving no trace? Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: March, 2021Weird Darkness opens a fire-themed descent that runs from a vanished forest blaze in 1976 Idaho through ghosts, Bigfoot, and UFOs born of wildfires, into Mary Shelley's graveyard education, a gentle apartment haunting, and an unsolved 1886 Boston murder. It opens with a U.S. Forest Service lookout stationed atop Pilot Peak in the Payette National Forest near Warren, high above the South Fork of the Salmon River, who woke sleepless at two a.m. in July 1976 and saw a bright orange triangle near a distant crest, then confirmed through binoculars two huge trees crowning out with flame. He calculated an azimuth with his fire-finder, radioed a two- to four-acre fire to the station fifteen air miles away, and watched it recede and vanish completely within forty minutes, leaving no smoke, no flame, and no charred ground at dawn six air miles out. Supervisors dubbed it the Pilot Peak phantom fire and sent smokejumper aircraft and hotshot crews to circle the ridge for nearly a week without finding a trace, until two months later a thousand-acre blaze on Zena Creek burned in roughly the same location he had reported. From there the episode widens into wildfires laced with the paranormal, beginning with the Curve Fire that struck South Mount Hawkins in the San Gabriel Mountains of California's Angeles National Forest on September 1, 2002, traced to a brittle 1935 wooden lookout tower and rumored to follow a cult ritual, after which hikers reported eyeless animals with hardened flesh and tall shadow figures akin to the Dark Watchers. It moves to the Battle Mountain Complex Fire near Battle Mountain, Nevada on August 6, 1999, where a letter forwarded to the Bigfoot Field Research Organization and a later call to investigator Thom Powell described firefighters capturing a burned, roughly seven-and-a-half-foot creature with a strong equine odor and near-human features. It closes with a July 2014 wildfire at West Kelowna near Vancouver, Canada, where a Castanet news video appeared to show an object shooting from a cloud, and a 2017 sighting by Arthur Frenette in New Hampshire's White Mountains, who watched a ball of fire plunge into Kinsman Ridge ahead of an out-of-control blaze.Next the episode turns to Mary Shelley, who in her 1831 introduction to Frankenstein traced her writing to her literary parents, though her mother, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman author Mary Wollstonecraft, died of puerperal fever days after her birth when Dr. Poignand removed the placenta with unwashed hands. Raised partly at her mother's grave in the St. Pancras churchyard, where she read her mother's work and escaped a strained home after father William Godwin remarried, the teenage Mary met Percy Shelley through the household and, at sixteen, declared love and reportedly first had sex among the tombstones. That fusion of reading, death, and forbidden knowledge surfaces in Victor Frankenstein's graveyard study of decay and in Godwin's 1809 Essay on Sepulchres, which framed visiting the illustrious dead as a form of communion the daughter carried into her novel of a creature assembled from corpses. From there the tone softens with a benign haunting recounted by a woman named Cassie, who moved into a larger, better-kept apartment over Christmas 2018 and lived there three months before moving in with her boyfriend. The internet blinked off repeatedly, cell reception failed in parts of the unit, electrical sockets quit working, bulbs burned out fast, and the shower switched itself on while she was away at classes. One night around one a.m. she and her boyfriend both heard the pitter-patter of bare feet in the kitchen, yet she never felt threatened, and when she left she said goodbye to whatever shared the space with her.The episode closes with the Wash-House Murder, the July 1886 killing of a Chinese laundryman found stabbed fourteen times in his Shawmut Avenue laundry in Boston's South End, his braided queue cut off and the five hundred dollars he had saved for a return to China gone. The victim's name was never certain, printed variously as Bin Chong, Ding Chong, and Wong Kong, and the case drew the Boston Police into a Chinatown governed by rival companies named Moy, Ching, Lee, and Sing. Detectives questioned the violent Moy company leader Ah Moy Chong and brought in New York interpreter Warry S. Charles, but the murder was never solved, and Charles himself was convicted of first-degree murder in 1908 after importing hatchet-armed assassins as a tong leader, leaving four dead in Chinatown.
Thirty years ago, Star Trek: First Contact brought one of the franchise's most important moments to life: humanity's first meeting with the Vulcans. This week on The Trek Files, host Larry Nemecek welcomes actor, writer, and Does It Fly? co-host Tamara Krinsky for a uniquely personal look behind the scenes of that iconic sequence. Using an original production call sheet from April 23, 1996, the conversation takes us to the nighttime shoot at Charlton Flats in the Angeles National Forest, where dozens of extras helped populate the post-war settlement that would witness history. Among them was a young aspiring actor named Tamara, hoping to gain experience and maybe earn a coveted SAG card. What happened next was something straight out of Hollywood legend. During filming, director Jonathan Frakes singled Tamara out from among the crowd, rebuilding part of the scene around her reaction shot. Her featured appearance in the finished film earned her a day-player contract, a SAG membership, and a memory that has stayed with her ever since. Along the way, Tamara shares stories of chilly overnight shoots, watching the legendary cast at work, and experiencing firsthand the creation of one of Star Trek's most beloved cinematic moments. In this special collaborative episode with Dance or Die, I'm talking to Derrick Estrada, better known in the worlds of breakcore, hardcore, jungle and sonic synthesis as Baseck. Baseck was raised in Lancaster, California halfway between the Angeles National Forest and the Mojave Desert. As a youth he became intoxicated by car bass test CDs, scratch records, jungle mixtapes, gangster rap, and illegal raves. Put this all in a blender with DIY punk, Chicano subculture and a battle mentality and you get halfway to what Baseck is about. Sometimes Baseck is playing wild shows that combine turntablism, live hardware, modded gameboys and thrash vocals; sometimes he is throwing raves, designing clothes, doing noise shows at the museum, or making synth modules. He's collaborated with Boys Noize, Charli XCX, A.G. Cook and Zach de la Rocha and recorded for too many labels to name. He calls in from his current home in Tulsa, Oklahoma to talk about cutty L.A. raves, Midwest hardcore, sonic transformation and how he became a warrior of the breaks. This is part one of a two part episode, hosted by Vivian Host aka Star Eyes. For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.
If you have information regarding missing hiker Monica Reza, contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) Homicide Bureau – Missing Persons Unit at (323) 890-5500. Detective Rincon or Detective Sanchez are leading the investigation, and you can also reach out to the Crescenta Valley Station at (818) 248-3464. Today we are talking about a missing person's case out of LA County. Her family is begging for her disappearance to be remembered and revisited so that the investigation stays active. They want to know what happened to their loved one, Monica Jacinto Reza. The DetailsMonica Reza was a brilliant and fit 60 year old woman. In the early morning hours of June 22nd, 2025, she'd dropped off her car at the house of one of two hiking companions, people she knew from the yoga studio she went to, and they carpooled to the trailhead near Mount Materman in the Angeles National Forest. As the crow flies, the trailhead is 30 miles from the city of angels. Monica was an avid hiker, she might have been 60 years old, but she was lean and fit. As the three ascended, one of the companions, the only other female, decided to bail out. The elevation and aggressive climb didn't seem to agree with her. She told Monica and the male that she'd stick around the area and meet them on their descent. But that would be the last time she saw Monica.About 9am, Monica and the male summited Mount Waterman. The companion shared the photo of Monica there, and another taken some feet down from there beside a lightning-struck tree. That male wasn't in the photos, and none with him on the summit were ever released to the public. Neither was his name.Curiously, the male took off at a jogging pace down the mountain. And Monica Reza followed close behind. I say curiously, because seasoned hikers said the terrain on that part of the trail was too riddled with dead pine needles, too rocky and too steep to make jogging safe. But the metadata shows that's the pace they traveled. Before they'd reached their other companion, who still waited for them, the trail forked left and right. The male hiker told rescuers later that he signaled to Monica to take the right fork and she waved in return, seeming to understand the instruction. And here's where Monica Reza went missing. He looked back ten or so minutes later, and Monica was no longer behind him. The male said he doubled back, calling for Monica, which their female friend reported hearing from below them, but still no Monica. He looked around, called out and soon met up with the female companion. Alarmed, they kept looking and soon, by luck, ,encountered a group of five people, one of which was a regular volunteer for search and rescue. By 11am, they'd reported Monica missing to authorities. There was a multi-county, multi-jurisdiction response to the call. Soon people were combing the trail and mountainside. Search dogs were enlisted. A helicopter with FLIR was used. The takeaway is there was an immediate reSend us Fan MailSupport the showSupport Curious Cat, an independent, human-made podcast!Anxious about AI? Something dark is going on inside America's defense and aerospace community — and the mainstream media is almost completely silent. In just the past nine months, nine top-level scientists tied to NASA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and highly classified special access programs have either died under suspicious circumstances or simply vanished without a trace. These were not ordinary researchers. They were the brilliant minds developing next-generation rocket propulsion, planetary defense systems, nuclear fusion technology, advanced sensors, and the classified programs that keep America ahead of China and Russia. In this hard-hitting 14-minute episode of The Right Side, Doug Billings lays out the chilling facts, names every scientist, maps the disturbing geographic and timeline patterns, and connects the dots no one else will touch. From the disappearance of Monica Jacinto Reza in California's Angeles National Forest to the vanishing of Air Force Research Laboratory commander William Neil McCasland in New Mexico, the pattern is unmistakable — and the institutional silence is deafening.Doug delivers the strong, unique conservative analysis you expect: what this means for America's technological edge, the possibility of foreign sabotage or domestic resistance targeting President Trump's America First agenda, and why proud conservatives must demand a full congressional and FBI investigation. This is the kind of story you won't hear on legacy media. This is the kind of story that only appears on The Right Side.If you care about national security, American technological superiority, and protecting the brilliant minds who defend our Republic, this episode is a must-listen.Share it. Demand answers. Support the leader who puts America First.Stay vigilant. Stay strong. Stay proud. The Right Side with Doug Billings – Strong conservative analysis you can't find anywhere else.#MissingScientists #DefenseScientists #NationalSecurity #SomethingDarkIsGoingOn #Trump2026 #AmericaFirst #DeepState #ClassifiedPrograms #Aerospace #LosAlamos #AirForceResearchLab #NASA#fypSupport the show

Michelle Dowd is the author of Forager: Field Notes on Surviving a Family Cult, a powerful memoir detailing her upbringing in an extremist religious group and her journey of overcoming trauma. A sought-after speaker, she has shared her story on The Joe Rogan Experience (2024) and The Megyn Kelly Show, offering raw insights into resilience and self-discovery. Now, she joins The Mitchell Report Unleashed Podcast to discuss her book, the importance of nervous system regulation, and the profound personal growth she's achieved through storytelling. Born into an ultra-religious cult—known as "the Field"—Michelle spent her childhood on a mountain in the Angeles National Forest. The group was founded in the 1930s by her grandfather, a domineering and charismatic figure who convinced generations of followers that he would live for 500 years and ascend to heaven upon doomsday. In this harsh environment, comfort and care were considered sins. Michelle was forced to endure hunger, thirst, and cold, learning survival skills that most could never imagine. She grew to trust animals more than people and developed an unbreakable connection to the natural world—lessons that would shape her resilience in the years to come.Chapters: 0:00 - Introduction1:15 - The Hidden Meaning Behind “Forager” – Michelle Dowd's Memoir6:12 - Overcoming Adversity After the Cult – How Trauma Shaped Her Life10:37 - How Cult Upbringing Rewires Your Nervous System17:00 - The Breaking Point: When Michelle Escaped the Cult22:06 - Love After Trauma: How the Cult Affected Her Relationships37:12 - “Ask Me Anything” – The Question No One Dares to Ask42:15 - Unpublished Victory: Michelle's Biggest Win Beyond Her Book→ CONTACT MICHELLE DOWD ON SOCIAL MEDIA ← Michelle's Substack: https://mdowd.substack.com/subscribeAmazon Book: https://linktw.in/uaxUim

On January 10, a sudden urban fire began in Los Angeles's Pacific Palisades neighborhood, immediately scorching 200 acres. Two hours later, evacuations were ordered for the 23,000 people in the community. By morning, all Los Angeles firefighters were called to duty, prepared for the worst as 50 to 80-mph winds began to pick up and carry embers from the fire for miles. Then the worst happened—firefighting aircraft became grounded due to the strong Santa Ana winds and hydrants, not designed for a fire of this scale, ran dry after constant use for 24 hours leaving homes and first responders defenseless. Within a short period of time, the Palisades fire razed 5,000 structures and counting to the ground. A little over a week since the blaze began, the Palisades and nearby Eaton fire in the Angeles National Forest, remain largely uncontained. Smaller fires in the conflagration—including Hurst and Kenneth on the northeast side of LA—are nearly or 100% contained. However 90,000 residents remain under evacuation orders and another 84,000 are under a warning. Life has come to a standstill in this portion of the nation's second largest city and the path to recovery is uncertain. For years, the insurance industry has been anticipating an event like this. In fact, just last summer, 70% of Palisades residents had their home policies dropped because companies determined wildfire rebuilding cost would be insurmountable. The absence of private insurance coverage, and the speed with which the fire consumed billions of dollars' worth of property, has raised urgent questions about how and where we will choose to develop housing, businesses, and necessary institutions in a climate changed world. In this timely episode, Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Bill Fulton, the former mayor of Ventura, California and former director of planning and economic development for the City of San Diego, discuss the future of homeownership, insurance, and residential development in Los Angeles while this singularly tragic event continues to play out. *DISCLAIMER - Rebecca's an idiot and forgot to connect her microphone to our recording platform so she sounds more echoey than usual. You would think after 98 episodes, we would have this down but you'd be wrong. On October 1, 1985, 17-year-old Michele "Missy" Avila went out with her friend, Laura Doyle. Hours later, the Avila's phone rings and it's Laura asking to speak to Missy. Mrs. Avila's heart sank because she assumed they were still together but Laura explained that Missy saw some guys she knew and left with them in a blue camaro. Three days later, a hiker found her deep in Angeles National Forest face down in a stream with a log across the back of her neck. The creepiest part: all of her hair was cut off. The case goes cold for 3-years until a witness comes forward with a shocking (and infuriating) tale.
