Michelle Dowd is the author of Forager: Field Notes on Surviving a Family Cult, a powerful memoir detailing her upbringing in an extremist religious group and her journey of overcoming trauma. A sought-after speaker, she has shared her story on The Joe Rogan Experience (2024) and The Megyn Kelly Show, offering raw insights into resilience and self-discovery. Now, she joins The Mitchell Report Unleashed Podcast to discuss her book, the importance of nervous system regulation, and the profound personal growth she's achieved through storytelling. Born into an ultra-religious cult—known as "the Field"—Michelle spent her childhood on a mountain in the Angeles National Forest. The group was founded in the 1930s by her grandfather, a domineering and charismatic figure who convinced generations of followers that he would live for 500 years and ascend to heaven upon doomsday. In this harsh environment, comfort and care were considered sins. Michelle was forced to endure hunger, thirst, and cold, learning survival skills that most could never imagine. She grew to trust animals more than people and developed an unbreakable connection to the natural world—lessons that would shape her resilience in the years to come.Chapters: 0:00 - Introduction1:15 - The Hidden Meaning Behind “Forager” – Michelle Dowd's Memoir6:12 - Overcoming Adversity After the Cult – How Trauma Shaped Her Life10:37 - How Cult Upbringing Rewires Your Nervous System17:00 - The Breaking Point: When Michelle Escaped the Cult22:06 - Love After Trauma: How the Cult Affected Her Relationships37:12 - “Ask Me Anything” – The Question No One Dares to Ask42:15 - Unpublished Victory: Michelle's Biggest Win Beyond Her Book→ CONTACT MICHELLE DOWD ON SOCIAL MEDIA ← Michelle's Substack: https://mdowd.substack.com/subscribeAmazon Book: https://linktw.in/uaxUim

Ten Across Conversations
Urban Expert Bill Fulton's Perspective on How LA Can Rebuild Following the Fires

Ten Across Conversations

On January 10, a sudden urban fire began in Los Angeles's Pacific Palisades neighborhood, immediately scorching 200 acres. Two hours later, evacuations were ordered for the 23,000 people in the community. By morning, all Los Angeles firefighters were called to duty, prepared for the worst as 50 to 80-mph winds began to pick up and carry embers from the fire for miles.  Then the worst happened—firefighting aircraft became grounded due to the strong Santa Ana winds and hydrants, not designed for a fire of this scale, ran dry after constant use for 24 hours leaving homes and first responders defenseless. Within a short period of time, the Palisades fire razed 5,000 structures and counting to the ground.  A little over a week since the blaze began, the Palisades and nearby Eaton fire in the Angeles National Forest, remain largely uncontained. Smaller fires in the conflagration—including Hurst and Kenneth on the northeast side of LA—are nearly or 100% contained. However 90,000 residents remain under evacuation orders and another 84,000 are under a warning. Life has come to a standstill in this portion of the nation's second largest city and the path to recovery is uncertain.  For years, the insurance industry has been anticipating an event like this. In fact, just last summer, 70% of Palisades residents had their home policies dropped because companies determined wildfire rebuilding cost would be insurmountable. The absence of private insurance coverage, and the speed with which the fire consumed billions of dollars' worth of property, has raised urgent questions about how and where we will choose to develop housing, businesses, and necessary institutions in a climate changed world.  In this timely episode, Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Bill Fulton, the former mayor of Ventura, California and former director of planning and economic development for the City of San Diego, discuss the future of homeownership, insurance, and residential development in Los Angeles while this singularly tragic event continues to play out.  Related articles and resources:   “As L.A. considers rebuilding, here's what people say they're willing to change” (The Washington Post, Jan. 15, 2025)  “How climate change is reshaping home insurance in California—and the rest of the U.S.” (NPR, Jan. 14, 2025)  “We Will All Be Paying For L.A's Wildfires” (The Lever, Jan. 14, 2025)

rWotD Episode 2398: San Bernardino Forest Reserve Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Monday, 27 November 2023 is San Bernardino Forest Reserve. The San Bernardino Forest Reserve was established by the General Land Office in California on February 25, 1893 with 737,280 acres (2,983.7 km2) in the San Bernardino Mountains. After the transfer of federal forests to the U. S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with San Gabriel National Forest and Santa Barbara National Forest to create Angeles National Forest, and the name was discontinued. On September 30, 1925 San Bernardino National Forest was re-established from parts of Angeles and Cleveland National Forest. The reserve was the fourth one established in the state and was created on the same day as the Trabuco Canyon Reserve. And, like the other reserves, the San Bernardino Reserve's purpose was the protection of watersheds and water resources. It was bordered by the San Gabriel Reserve on the east at Cajon Pass and extended over all of the San Bernardino Mountains to the Mojave Desert. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:00 UTC on Monday, 27 November 2023.For the full current version of the article, see San Bernardino Forest Reserve on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Russell Standard.

But to save time, he went off trail — and ended up lost and relying on a rapidly dying cell phone to call for help. René was unprepared to spend a cold night in the mountains with wildlife roaming around him, and his mental and physical health deteriorated quickly.Rescue teams struggled to find him in a thick fog and a massive search area, until a stranger with a unique set of technical skills stepped in with key information. We also speak to Jessie Krebs, wilderness survival instructor of OWLS Skills, about what you should and shouldn't do if you're lost in the wilderness, and how to prepare, no matter the length of hike.

In this episode, I chat with mental health advocate and visual artist Ashley Wright. Based in Southern California, Ashley describes herself as a mental health artist, focusing on the healing power and therapeutic quality of the creative process. Ashley openly shares her journey with CPTSD and shares valuable advice for artists who face similar struggles. Join us for a raw, personal, and deeply impactful discussion surrounding the relationship between art and mental health. Here's what we discuss:1. The importance of being gentle with yourself if you have a mental health condition and why it's essential to let go of guilt or shame if you need to pause on making your art.2. Why Ashley centers her work on perception and reality in relation to derealization, dissociation, and maladaptive daydreaming.3. What inspired Ashley to focus on landscape in her work, and why she believes it's important to create your own rules.4. The reasons why we believe it's imperative to enjoy the creative process and return to that child-like place of creating work with wonder, joy, and love (without worrying so much about the end result!)About Ashley:Ashley's passion for the arts has been present ever since her childhood and has expanded across multiple mediums. It started with drawing and then quickly expanded into choir, band, orchestra, and theater. It wasn't until her senior year of her BA in Music at the University of Redlands where Ashley took a painting class for the first time and she hasn't stopped painting since then.Being tucked away in the Inland Empire, Ashley is surrounded by the beautiful San Bernardino National Forest, Joshua Tree National Park, Santa Rosa Wilderness, and the Angeles National Forest. These natural landscapes have played a huge part in her life and continue to inspire her art. Much of the imagery Ashley's paintings are directly inspired by her surroundings, the 80s and 90s nostalgia, sci-fi, and pop culture.Ashley's mental health is an important part of her life and directly impacts and represents her art. She has struggled with CPTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). CPTSD comes with Dissociation, Derealization, and Maladaptive Daydreaming. These coping mechanisms helped saved Ashley's life but living with them can feel like you constantly have one foot in reality and one foot out. These concepts influence Ashley's art through variance in vibrancy, perception, style, and texture. In October 1985, 17-year-old Michele Avila disappeared after leaving her home to hang out with three of her good friends. Three days after she was last seen, Michele was found in an area of Angeles National Forest known as Colby Canyon. Despite several suspects making it onto the police department's radar, it would be three years before an unexpected confession would bring Missy's true killers to justice. But even as recently as a few years ago, Missy's family has been fighting for justice for Missy in the aftermath of this horrific tragedy. _________________________ Listen to Evil Pudding here! _________________________ Patreon Request a Case YouTube Channel Goodpods: Leave a review! Witches, elves, man-eating cryptids; OH MY! This week Em and Liv, your friendly neighborhood Meta PsycKicks, play another metaphysical game of Psychic Chicken. Sharing with you the haunting details of the whimsical, pigmy woods located in SoCal's Angeles National Forest. Have you ever thought about how a Lady in White comes about? How does one become a Dark Witch upon a badass black steed? And if you're going to be eaten by a Giant White Owl, should you partake in a foot race with the stampeding souls of the native children? Tune in to watch as Em channels the spiritual beings of the elusive Witches Forest. Pin pointing the three paranormal energy centers (or towers as she calls them) to listen to the stories from the land as they speak through her. While Liv holds her tongue in disbelief and possibly receives a casual curse for good measure from the spiritual woman who resembles a character from "RWBY". Will Liv survive the Witch's Mark? Only time will tell...Or the two twin-flame, mediums may just have to be invited to visit Harmony Grove, in the foothills of Spooks Canyon, to find out.FOR MORE WATCH THE VIDEO ON THIS TOPIC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xb4hWs1xkA&t=90sOR READ THE BLOG: https://www.metapsyckicks.com/journalOR JOIN OUR PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/metapsyckicks——-BOOK A PSYCHIC MEDIUM READING:Olivia the Medium: https://www.metapsyckicks.com/our-servicesBOOK A TAROT READING:Emily the Intuitive: https://www.metapsyckicks.com/our-services-----RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS:Our YouTube Setup ►► https://kit.co/metapsyckicks/meta-psyckicks-youtube-setupOur Podcast Setup ►► https://kit.co/metapsyckicks/meta-psyckicks-podcasting-setupEm's Tarot Collection ►► https://kit.co/metapsyckicks/em-s-tarot-card-collectionOther Divination Tools: ►► https://kit.co/metapsyckicks/other-divination-toolsDISCLAIMER: This description might contain affiliate links that allow you to find the items mentioned in this video and support the channel at no cost to you.
