South East Technological University (SETU) and ESB Networks Training were pleased to announce a new collaboration aimed at enhancing the energy sector in Ireland. The collaboration will create learning opportunities, foster innovation, and strengthen industry-academic partnerships in the sector. The collaboration leverages the outstanding strengths and expertise of each partner that will benefit the wider community. This initiative builds on the unique strengths and expertise of both organisations. SETU's Extended Campus, based within the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, began preliminary consultations with ESB Networks Training in August 2024. These discussions have since led to the formation of a dedicated steering group tasked with guiding the partnership. The group's focus is on delivering key outcomes in education, skills development, instructor upskilling, and technological innovation within the energy industry. The collaboration was officially launched this week at the ESB Networks Training Centre in Portlaoise. Speaking at the event, Dr Frances Hardiman, Head (Carlow) of the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, said, "This partnership with ESB Networks Training represents a significant step forward in bridging the gap between academia and industry. By working together, we are not only enhancing learning opportunities but also driving innovation in the energy sector." Anne Meaney, SETU's Head of Extended Campus, added, "Our upskilling programme will be tailored to enhance the teaching and learning skills of ESB Networks instructors, fostering a culture of teaching excellence within the organisation. Alongside this will be the creation of a strong community of practice, to facilitate knowledge-sharing and collaboration. It will be comprised from a network of electrical lecturing staff from SETU, and instructors and subject matter experts from ESB Networks' Training Centre." Keith Kavanagh, Senior Manager, Technical Training and Development at ESB Networks, stated: "At ESB Networks, we are committed to fostering a highly skilled workforce equipped to meet the evolving demands of the energy industry. Our collaboration with SETU will enable us to share expertise, develop cutting-edge training programmes, and ultimately benefit the entire sector." The partnership highlights the shared commitment of SETU and ESB Networks to skills development, education, and technological progress. This ensures a sustainable and innovative future for the energy sector. The partnership will explore new methods of technology-enhanced learning, including blended delivery models and virtual reality applications. One of the steering group's initial priorities is to focus on the development of an SETU-accredited training programme in Electrical Network Operations. Learners enrolled on this programme will be formally registered as SETU students. Upon successful completion, this programme will pave the way for a broader suite of validated training opportunities. Access to vital infrastructure, including high-voltage substations, will provide learners from both organisations with invaluable, hands-on experience in real-world environments - ensuring Ireland's energy workforce is prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

ESB Networks has announced the launch of its new 'Weather Watch' Schools Programme aimed at supporting Junior Cycle and Transition Year Geography students to explore the links between weather patterns and renewable energy sources. Nearly 8,100 secondary school students across 90 schools nationwide are taking part in the programme and have received a free weather station from ESB Networks to encourage learning about energy, electricity, and the impact weather has on renewable electricity generation. The programme encourages conversations beyond the classroom, helping students bring energy awareness into their homes. By creating discussions about energy use, the initiative encourages participation in ESB Networks' "Is This a Good Time?" programme. This initiative supports tips about electricity consumption, helping people to make informed decisions about their electricity use, such as shifting electricity use away from peak times (5-7 pm) or to times when there is surplus renewable energy available on the network. Through the use of outdoor weather stations and supporting learning materials, the programme links classroom theory with real-world applications. Each weather station comes with a digital display directly linked to the station, allowing students to gather learnings from within the classroom. The lessons teach students how weather like wind or solar, impacts renewable energy in practice - and how this can be used to help make more informed decisions on energy usage. Additionally, the weather station is linked to ESBNetworks.ie/weatherwatch, enabling each participating school to share their learnings. Key features of the Weather Watch Schools Programme include: Hands-on learning: Weather stations are provided to all participating schools, giving students direct access to the science behind renewable energy generation. Skills development: Students will develop and use critical thinking, data analysis and problem-solving skills. Broaden sustainability knowledge: Students are provided the opportunity to broaden their understanding of sustainable practices in their everyday lives. Cross-curricular applications: The programme brings together knowledge from geography, math, and environmental studies. Lindsay Sharpe, Strategy and Customer Manager at ESB Networks, said: "The ESB Networks Weather Watch schools programme is a pivotal initiative that empowers the next generation with the knowledge and skills to understand the critical role of electricity and weather in our daily lives. By engaging students in meaningful conversations and practical activities, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of renewable energy and its impact on electricity consumption. This programme not only educates but also inspires students to take proactive steps towards a sustainable future. The programme provides a new avenue to educate young people about energy and environmental efficiency allowing for interesting and active learning to take place." Claire Phelan, Geography Teacher at Patrician Secondary School Cork, whose students are partaking in the programme, added: "ESB Networks' Weather Watch Schools Programme has encouraged our students to think more deeply about the connections between weather conditions, climate conditions, and the link in generating renewable energy sources. Students are using their knowledge from this programme to become energy ambassadors at home." For more information, visit ESB Networks' Weather Watch | Sustainability Education.

Electricity Demand Spikes Seen During Major Sporting Events in July

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Ireland's electricity grid recorded spikes in demand during some of the summer's biggest sporting events, data from the transmission system operator EirGrid shows. Last month's All-Ireland football and hurling finals both saw increases of around 80 Megawatts (MW) in electricity demand at points during the GAA showpiece events. The biggest increase during both games was seen at half time, with demand rising again by 70 MW after the end of the first 70 minutes during Clare and Cork's pulsating encounter in the hurling final. A further spike of 60 MW was seen shortly following the trophy presentation in the Armagh Galway football final. Peak electricity demand on both Sundays stood at between 3650 MW - 3750 MW, with usage rising noticeably during brief time windows corresponding with stoppages in play during the games as other appliances such as kettles are switched on. A further spike of around 80 MW was seen shortly after full time in the European Championships football final between Spain and England. Other major events which did not feature defined breaks and which took place over either a shorter timespan, such as Olympic races involving Ireland's swimming medallists Mona McSharry and Daniel Wiffen, or over a longer period such as the Olympics opening ceremony did not reflect the same defined spikes in activity. EirGrid operates and manages Ireland's high-voltage transmission system, with electricity then taken from the transmission system and supplied to properties including homes and businesses through the distribution system, operated by ESB Networks. Latest provisional data published by EirGrid today shows that 28.7% of electricity used in Ireland during the month of July came from renewable sources. The amount of electricity generated from grid-scale solar reached another new peak of 118 GWh (Gigawatt hours) across the month, meeting 4.5% of electricity demand, up from the previous record of just over 100 GWh in June. July also saw a number of new peaks recorded for grid-scale solar activity for a one-minute period, with a series of records set and subsequently broken between the 25th (663 MW) and 31st (733 MW) of July. Gigawatt hours (GWh) values reflect energy usage over a longer period of time, while Megawatt (MW) values reflect point-in-time peaks. More than 21.5% of all electricity used in July came from wind farms, with a total generation of 569 GWh for the month. The remainder of the 28.7% renewables total came from a range of other sources, including hydropower and biomass. Overall electricity system demand stood at 2,647 GWh for July. Gas generation accounted for 44.6% of all electricity used over the month, with 20% being imported via interconnection, 5.5% coming from coal, and the remaining 1% from other sources. EirGrid is responsible for leading Ireland's transition to a low carbon future so that 80% of electricity can come from renewables by 2030, as set out in Government targets. Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, said: "Solar power had another strong month on the electricity grid in July, and this trend will be of increasing importance over the coming years so that we can rely on a reasonably steady supply of renewables at different times of the year."

ESB - One Giga Watt of Energy Storage Now Available on Ireland's Electricity Network

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2024 3:24

Today, ESB Networks has announced that it has 1,000 MW (one Giga Watt) of electricity storage connected to Ireland's network. This figure includes 731.5 MW of battery storage projects and 292 MW from Turlough Hill pumped storage power station - which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Energy storage facilities are connected across the grid, to both the Transmission and Distribution systems, managed by EirGrid and ESB Networks. One Giga Watt of energy storage is enough to power the equivalent of approximately 450,000 homes for one hour, typically during peaks in demand or when frequency support is needed at times of low levels of renewable generation. For context, the peak demand on Ireland's electricity system is approximately 5.5 GW. Electricity storage systems such as utility-scale battery projects also provide essential backup services to the grid that help to keep the electricity supply secure, reduce carbon emissions and ultimately reduce costs to the consumer. With a strong pipeline of further energy storage projects, Ireland's electricity system is becoming more flexible and agile, facilitating the greater integration of cheaper renewable wind and solar power necessary to decarbonise the electricity system and meet Ireland's climate targets. Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, said: "Ireland is on a journey that will see us reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels in the move to cleaner sources of energy. Energy storage, like the large-scale battery projects we are seeing emerge across the country combined with the technology at sites like ESB's Turlough Hill, will be crucial to providing more affordable, sustainable electricity and ensuring security of supply. 1 GW is an incredible milestone but the growth in energy storage projects simply must continue for the benefit of all across society and the wider economy to allow us to effectively balance our new, homegrown supply of clean electricity." Nicholas Tarrant, Managing Director of ESB Networks, commented on the importance of this on the country's journey to net zero: "This really is a significant milestone for us at ESB Networks and our partners involved in connecting one Giga Watt of energy storage to Ireland's electricity network. The figure includes sites like ESB's Turlough Hill hydroelectric station, but what we have seen in recent years is a major push by the wider industry to deliver large-scale battery energy storage projects that we have been able to support through network connections. As this will no doubt continue, we at ESB Networks are proud to be playing our part in helping to deliver the infrastructure required on the journey to a net zero future where clean sources of electricity backed by flexible storage options will be the cornerstone of a cleaner electricity system for Ireland." Bobby Smith, Head of Energy Storage Ireland, remarked: "Energy storage is a key enabler of our clean energy future, and this achievement is a big step on that journey. Our members are delivering the energy storage projects alongside ESB Networks that are needed to reduce the use of fossil fuels and drive down energy prices while ensuring a secure, stable electricity system. The energy storage industry is ready to help deliver on Ireland's net-zero ambitions."

As 2022 draws to a close, ESB Networks can confirm that it has connected 23 large-scale renewable generator projects to Ireland's electricity network with total green energy capacity of 688 MW, breaking all previous renewable connection records. This is enough to power approximately 350,000 homes, the equivalent of the population of County Cork. This comes following the energisation this week of the 95 MW Gillinstown Solar Farm in County Meath, bringing a total of almost 5,400 MW of renewable generation connected to Ireland's transmission and distribution systems. In addition, some 79 MW across four battery storage projects were connected this year. Ireland now boasts almost 800 MW of energy storage, which helps the stabilise the network during times of low renewable generation. ESB Networks Managing Director Nicholas Tarrant says: “The connection of almost 700MW of clean energy this year is a significant collective achievement for ESB Networks, the renewables community and for Ireland. It represents a 15 percent increase in renewable generation year-on-year and it is testament to ESB Networks' continued investment and innovation in the development of a safe, resilient and flexible electricity network. Nicholas continues: “Ireland is a world leader in the integration of intermittent renewables on its electricity system, with wind comprising almost half of electricity generation for October and November. The Climate Action Plan and ESB's Net Zero by 2040 strategy commits to an acceleration in renewables connections in the next decade as we seek to deliver on our climate targets as we transition to a greener, brighter future.” Furthermore, ESB Networks is on track to connect approximately 34,000 new homes across Ireland by the end of 2022. With new houses and apartments increasingly all-electric, these connections will also facilitate the expansion in the use of clean electricity for heating and transport A new ‘Networks for Net Zero' business strategy – setting out how ESB Networks will deliver the electricity network for Ireland's clean, electric future – will launch in January 2023. ESB is to recruit 1,000 people over the next three years to support the delivery of its ambitious Driven to Make a Difference: Net Zero by 2040 strategy. As part of its transformative drive to deliver the infrastructure, services and associated customer-focused solutions required to achieve net-zero emissions, ESB is seeking to enhance its existing talent pool through recruitment across a range of technical and specialist skills including finance, IT, HR, engineering, customer service and qualified electricians. More than 300 graduates, apprentices and trainees will be recruited over the next three years as part of the recruitment drive, cementing ESB's commitment to investing in career development and on building a future talent pipeline. Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, said: “This is a critical time for Ireland's energy landscape, as we work together to achieve the targets set out in the Climate Action Plan. I welcome ESB's announcement today, setting out a plan to actively recruit people with the range of skills needed to support its own ambition to achieve net-zero by 2040. Together with the 8,000 people already employed at the organisation, these new recruits will play a key role in creating a clean energy future for us all.” ESB will recruit across a range of positions including marine geologists, cyber specialists, project management, network planning, commercial analysts, customer service and qualified electricians with most of the jobs located in Ireland. Paddy Hayes, Chief Executive of ESB, said: “Today is another positive step in the delivery of our Net Zero by 2040 strategy as we launch our campaign to recruit 1,000 people within the next three years. ESB has always encouraged and supported progressive thinkers and innovators who are committed to making a difference. When you work with ESB, you join a dedicated, inclusive and innovative team focused on powering Ireland's transition to a net-zero carbon future. Today, we are making a call for talented and driven individuals to join us as we work together to make a difference by delivering a net-zero energy future for the customers and communities we serve.” ESB Group employs approximately 8,000 people across its diverse range of businesses including ESB Networks, Electric Ireland, ESB International, ESB Telecoms, NIE Networks, Generation and Trading, ecars and ESB's Smart Energy Services. This job announcement follows the recent ESB Networks' annual Apprentice Recruitment Campaign which will see up to 96 electrical apprentices start later this year, with the prestigious ESB Graduate Programme also commencing in September 2022. The roles will be advertised on www.esb.ie/careers where all interested applicants are invited to register their interest for future opportunities.
