POPULARITY

We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws.We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. O Gracious Light Phos hilaronO gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Psalm 17 Exaudi, Domine1Hear my plea of innocence, O Lord;give heed to my cry; *listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.2Let my vindication come forth from your presence; *let your eyes be fixed on justice.3Weigh my heart, summon me by night, *melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.4I give no offense with my mouth as others do; *I have heeded the words of your lips.5My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; *in your paths my feet shall not stumble.6I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; *incline your ear to me and hear my words.7Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, *O Savior of those who take refuge at your right handfrom those who rise up against them.8Keep me as the apple of your eye; *hide me under the shadow of your wings,9From the wicked who assault me, *from my deadly enemies who surround me.10They have closed their heart to pity, *and their mouth speaks proud things.11They press me hard, now they surround me, *watching how they may cast me to the ground,12Like a lion, greedy for its prey, *and like a young lion lurking in secret places.13Arise, O Lord; confront them and bring them down; *deliver me from the wicked by your sword.14Deliver me, O Lord, by your hand *from those whose portion in life is this world;15Whose bellies you fill with your treasure, *who are well supplied with childrenand leave their wealth to their little ones.16But at my vindication I shall see your face; *when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The LessonsAmos 9:1-10 English Standard VersionI saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said:“Strike the capitals until the thresholds shake, and shatter them on the heads of all the people;and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword; not one of them shall flee away; not one of them shall escape.“If they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them;if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.If they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, from there I will search them out and take them;and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them. And if they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;and I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.”The Lord God of hosts,he who touches the earth and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn, and all of it rises like the Nile, and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;who builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault upon the earth;who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—the Lord is his name.“Are you not like the Cushites to me, O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.“Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Syrians from Kir?Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground, except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”declares the Lord.“For behold, I will command, and shake the house of Israel among all the nationsas one shakes with a sieve, but no pebble shall fall to the earth. All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, ‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.'Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The Song of Mary - MagnificatMy soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as It was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Galatians 4:21-31 English Standard VersionTell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written,“Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.”Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The Song of Simeon - Nunc dimittisLord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.A Prayer of St. ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. ConclusionMay the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. - Romans 15:13

Venite Psalm 95:1-7Come, let us sing to the Lord; *let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving * and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, *and a great King above all gods.In his hand are the caverns of the earth, * and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, *and his hands have molded the dry land.Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, * and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. * Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice! Psalm 55 Exaudi, Deus1Hear my prayer, O God; *do not hide yourself from my petition.2Listen to me and answer me; *I have no peace, because of my cares.3I am shaken by the noise of the enemy *and by the pressure of the wicked;4For they have cast an evil spell upon me *and are set against me in fury.5My heart quakes within me, *and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.6Fear and trembling have come over me, *and horror overwhelms me.7And I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! *I would fly away and be at rest.8I would flee to a far-off place *and make my lodging in the wilderness.9I would hasten to escape *from the stormy wind and tempest.”10Swallow them up, O Lord;confound their speech; *for I have seen violence and strife in the city.11Day and night the watchmen make their rounds upon her walls, *but trouble and misery are in the midst of her.12There is corruption at her heart; *her streets are never free of oppression and deceit.13For had it been an adversary who taunted me,then I could have borne it; *or had it been an enemy who vaunted himself against me,then I could have hidden from him.14But it was you, a man after my own heart, *my companion, my own familiar friend.15We took sweet counsel together, *and walked with the throng in the house of God.16Let death come upon them suddenly;let them go down alive into the grave; *for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their very midst.17But I will call upon God, *and the Lord will deliver me.18In the evening, in the morning, and at noonday,I will complain and lament, *and he will hear my voice.19He will bring me safely back from the battle waged against me; *for there are many who fight me.20God, who is enthroned of old, will hear me and bring them down; *they never change; they do not fear God.21My companion stretched forth his hand against his comrade; *he has broken his covenant.22His speech is softer than butter, *but war is in his heart.23His words are smoother than oil, *but they are drawn swords.24Cast your burden upon the Lord, and he will sustain you; *he will never let the righteous stumble.25For you will bring the bloodthirsty and deceitful *down to the pit of destruction, O God.26They shall not live out half their days, *but I will put my trust in you. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The LessonsProverbs 16:25-33 English Standard Version25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.26 A worker's appetite works for him; his mouth urges him on.27 A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.28 A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.29 A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good.30 Whoever winks his eyes plans dishonest things; he who purses his lips brings evil to pass.31 Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.32 Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. You are God(Te Deum laudamus)You are God: we praise you;You are the Lord: we acclaim you;You are the eternal Father:All creation worships you.To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you.The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free you did not shun the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge.Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. Philippians 4:4-23 English Standard Version4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.10 I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. Amen. ConclusionThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14

And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.Officiant: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. EpiphanyThe Lord has shown forth his glory: Come let us adore him. Amen. The LessonsProverbs 4:20-27 English Standard Version20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. Ephesians 4:17-32 English Standard Version17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. A Song of Praise(Benedictus es, Domine Song of the Three Young Men, 29-34)Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; * you are worthy of praise; glory to you.Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; * on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.Glory to you, beholding the depths; * in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; * we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever. "And So It Begins" John 15:26-16:4
This is the sermon preached at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vallonia, Indiana, on Sunday, May 21st, 2023, which was Exaudi, the 7th Sunday of Easter. Text: John 15:26–16:4
Jesus knows the disciples will naturally, in their sinful flesh, want to think back to the days when they were with Jesus, and not the post-Ascension future. It will seem strange and scary to be without Jesus, how can the kingdom of God continue if He is not there personally with them? Jesus gives them three important assurances here for after his resurrection:1. Jesus will send the Helper, the Spirit of Truth, from the Father to testify of Him.2. The disciples will bear witness to one another.3. Jesus already knows all the terrible things which will happen to them.

Easter 6 Exaudi June 5, 2022 John 15:26—16:4 NO SERMON TEXT
We confuse strength and weakness, but realizing that we have no strength of our own to believe in Jesus or create our faith is vital, for otherwise we drastically overestimate our abilities and strength, setting ourselves up for great disaster and danger. Sermon on the 3rd Article of Creed and John 15:26-16:4 for Exaudi Sunday by Rev. Jeff Hendrix.
Exaudi Introit: Ps. 27:1, 11a, 12; antiphon: Ps. 27:7a, 8b, 9a Old Testament: Ezek. 36:22-28 Psalm 51:1-12 (antiphon: v. 10) Epistle: 1 Peter 4:7-11(12-14) ProperVerse: Ps. 47:8, John 14:18a, 28, 16:22 Gospel: John 15:26-16:4 The Spirit of Truth Bears Witness to Jesus The Spirit of Truth bears witness to Jesus, who is the truth. But the world does not receive the truth. It loves its own and hates those who are of the truth. Just as Jesus was scorned, so is His Church. "The hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God" (John 16:2). Yet it is by Jesus' suffering and death that we are saved. Therefore we rejoice to share in His sufferings, that we may also share in His resurrection glory (1 Pet. 4:7-14). Through the ministry of the Spirit of Truth, we are cleansed from the deceit of our idols and given a new heart and a new spirit, the heart and Spirit of Christ (Ezek. 36:22-28). He now works in us fervent, self-giving love for one another, love which covers a multitude of sins, "that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen" (1 Pet. 4:11).

May 29, 2022 Jesus has not failed you and will not forget you or any of those whom He has called by name in Holy Baptism. He is even now moving heaven and earth to restore and renew your trust in His Word. He overthrows anyone or anything that you have given fear, love, or trust. God will be your God, and you will be His people. He sends the Promise of the Father to you to call you back home, to gather you again to the Christian church, to open your eyes again to the only way of life and escape from death, and to set you apart again as trusting people of God. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stjohnrandomlake/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stjohnrandomlake/support
[26] But when the Paraclete cometh, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father, he shall give testimony of me. Cum autem venerit Paraclitus, quem ego mittam vobis a Patre, Spiritum veritatis, qui a Patre procedit, ille testimonium perhibebit de me; [27] And you shall give testimony, because you are with me from the beginning. et vos testimonium perhibebitis, quia ab initio mecum estis. [1] These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. Haec locutus sum vobis, ut non scandalizemini. [2] They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God. Absque synagogis facient vos : sed venit hora, ut omnis qui interficit vos arbitretur obsequium se praestare Deo. [3] And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me. Et haec facient vobis, quia non noverunt Patrem, neque me. [4] But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. Sed haec locutus sum vobis, ut cum venerit hora eorum, reminiscamini quia ego dixi vobis. Introit: Ps. 26. 7,8,9 [7] Hear, O Lord, my voice, with which I have cried to thee: have mercy on me and hear me. Exaudi, Domine, vocem meam, qua clamavi ad te; miserere mei, et exaudi me. [8] My heart hath said to thee: My face hath sought thee: thy face, O Lord, will I still seek. Tibi dixit cor meum, exquisivit te facies mea; faciem tuam, Domine, requiram. [9] Turn not away thy face from me; decline not in thy wrath from thy servant. Be thou my helper, forsake me not; do not thou despise me, O God my Saviour. Ne avertas faciem tuam a me; ne declines in ira a servo tuo. Adjutor meus esto; ne derelinquas me, neque despicias me, Deus salutaris meus.

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.” “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” These familiar words from Psalm 23 and John 10 have been cherished by Christians throughout the ages for the deep comfort they bring. Also beloved are the hymns inspired by them—and it is these “Good Shepherd” hymns that are the focus in this Easter season Hymn Sing with Sarah episode. Beginning with a broader discussion of the historical names and meanings of the Sundays between Easter and Pentecost (Quasimodo Geniti, Misericordias Domini, Jubilate, Cantate, Rogate, and Exaudi), Sarah then hones in on hymns and readings for Misericordias Domini ("the steadfast love of the Lord”), known in common parlance as Good Shepherd Sunday. Sarah tells the stories behind three of the most popular Good Shepherd hymns—“The King of Love My Shepherd Is” (LSB 709), “The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want” (LSB 710), and “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” (LSB 711)—before inviting Erin, Bri, and Rachel to discuss their own favorite hymns in the genre. Links referenced in this episode include: The original tune for LSB 709 (“The King of Love My Shepherd Is”) A favorite homily on the Good Shepherd by the Rev. [14] Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. [15] And the Jews wondered, saying: How doth this man know letters, having never learned? [16] Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. [17] If any man do the will of him; he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. [18] He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and there is no injustice in him. [19] Did Moses not give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? [20] Why seek you to kill me? The multitude answered, and said: Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to kill thee? [21] Jesus answered, and said to them: One work I have done; and you all wonder: [22] Therefore, Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and on the sabbath day you circumcise a man. [23] If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are you angry at me because I have healed the whole man on the sabbath day? [24] Judge not according to the appearance, but judge just judgment. [25] Some therefore of Jerusalem said: Is not this he whom they seek to kill? [26] And behold, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers known for a truth, that this is the Christ? [27] But we know this man, whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. [28] Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching, and saying: You both know me, and you know whence I am: and I am not come of myself; but he that sent me, is true, whom you know not. [29] I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me. [30] They sought therefore to apprehend him: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. [31] But of the people many believed in him, and said: When the Christ cometh, shall he do more miracles, than these which this man doth? Introit Psalm 54:2-3 [2] Hear, O God, my prayer, and despise not my supplication: Exaudi, Deus, orationem meam, et ne despexeris deprecationem meam; [3] Be attentive to me and hear me. I am grieved in my exercise; and am troubled, intende mihi, et exaudi me. Contristatus sum in exercitatione mea; et conturbatus sum
