Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

A Place for Us unfolds the lives of an Indian-American Muslim family, gathered together in their Californian hometown to celebrate the eldest daughter, Hadia's, wedding - a match of love rather than tradition. It is here, on this momentous day, that Amar, the youngest of the siblings, reunites with his family for the first time in three years. Rafiq and Layla must now contend with the choices and betrayals that lead to their son's estrangement - the reckoning of parents who strove to pass on their cultures and traditions to their children; and of children who in turn struggle to balance authenticity in themselves with loyalty to the home they came from.In a narrative that spans decades and sees family life through the eyes of each member, A Place For Us charts the crucial moments in the family's past, from the bonds that bring them together to the differences that pull them apart. And as siblings Hadia, Huda, and Amar attempt to carve out a life for themselves, they must reconcile their present culture with their parent's faith, to tread a path between the old world and the new, and learn how the smallest decisions can lead to the deepest of betrayals.A deeply affecting and resonant story, A Place for Us is truly a book for our times: a moving portrait of what it means to be an American family today, a novel of love, identity and belonging that eloquently examines what it means to be both American and Muslim — and announces Fatima Farheen Mirza as a major new literary talent.Follow us on instagram: https://bit.ly/2IZWIN6Follow us on twitter: https://bit.ly/2EIpXPaFollow us on goodreads: https://bit.ly/2LBIlOT

My guest for The Happy Hour #213 is Jessica Turner. Jessica is the author of the newly released Stretched Too Thin: How Working Moms Can Lose the Guilt, Work Smarter, and Thrive and The Wall Street Journal bestselling book The Fringe Hours. She is also an award-winning marketing professional and speaker, and the founder of the lifestyle blog The Mom Creative. She and her husband, Matthew, live with their three children in Nashville, Tennessee. I am so happy to welcome my friend Jessica back to the show! Jessica and I start out talking about books, which if you love books you need to follow her Instagram profile where she shares about what she's reading! We then dive in and talk about the concept of mental load.  Friends, I know we all suffer from the stress of mental load - coordinating, managing, analyzing, and juggling in our minds ALL THE THINGS, am I right? Jessica shares practical tips for managing mental load and reminds us that self-care is not selfish, it's necessary. We also discuss how we need to stop separating ourselves based on where/what/when we work. I love how Jessica says whether you're a stay at home mom or a working mom, "we are all moms who love our kids"! In the second half of the show, Jessica shares the story of when her husband Matthew (a  published author) wrote his first children's book, he was turned down a dozen times. Instead of letting that stop them, Jessica and Matthew self-published the book, it sold out, and now it's sold 100,000 copies! You guys, I loved talking with Jessica today and I know that through our conversation I was reminded of the grace God gives us every single day, and how we can extend grace and care to each other and to ourselves. {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour - subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play).  And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!} Links from the Show Jessica's website: The Mom Creative Jessica's Books: The Fringe Hours, Stretched Too Thin Questions for Stretched Too Thin Jessica's Other Happy Hour Episodes: The Happy Hour #30, The Happy Half Hour #5 When God Made You, When God Made Light The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom HARO (Help A Reporter Out) A Quiet Place (movie) Jessica's Instagram focused on books What Jessica is loving: Pumpkin chocolate chip banana bread, Draper James, Fall TV (especially The Walking Dead, Outlander, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) What Jessica is reading: A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza, Cozy Minimalist Home by Myquillyn Smith, The Wildling Sisters by Eve Chase Connect with Jessica Facebook // Twitter // Instagram Connect with Jamie + The Happy Hour Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube Want to stay connected to The Happy Hour? Subscribe to The Happy Hour Newsletter!
