Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Sigrid Nunez, one of our most celebrated literary voices, joins Rhett for a conversation about writing, adaptation, and the creative process. She shares her experience of seeing her novels adapted for the screen and reflects on how film adaptations, much like cover songs, bring a new vision to a writer's work. The two discuss her writing process, transition to short stories, and the unofficial trilogy formed by her last three novels, including "The Vulnerables." Drawing wisdom from her career and the influences of writers like Toni Morrison and Virginia Woolf, she provides a candid look at what it takes to sustain a life in writing. When asked what advice she would give her 21-year-old self, her response is simple: keep writing. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DR Shores, author of the book Shallow Stock. Raised on the Yorkshire coastline in the United Kingdom, D R Shores studied engineering prior to a twenty-five year career in business. Literature has always been a passion, with a taste ranging from Sigrid Nunez and Thomas Harris to established twentieth-century classics from Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ayn Rand and Milan Kundera. Now living with his family and introverted dog in the east midlands area of England, his other interests include music, current affairs, volunteering and keeping fit.   In my book review, I stated Shallow Stock is a suspense thriller that will keep you reading well into the wee hours of the morning! I loved the story and the intricate plotlines. As an author, I was also intrigued by how all the threads came together in the end.   The story has a Hatfield and McCoy vibe. Two families are at 'war' and have been for several generations. They each own a competing corporation and work tirelessly to out do one another. Wynter McGlynn is the CEO of one. Julian Dayton is the CEO of the other. Both currently have issues holding onto their positions of power and see the other as their biggest obstacle. The competition is fierce, but is it fair? And what happens when the finger pointing starts?   From black tie balls to crooked politicians to a city-wide triathlon to human trafficking to board meetings to interesting family dynamics, this book will lead you down a road you won't want to miss. And even when you think you've gotten the very last surprise, Shores finds a way to offer you a tidbit more. This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with author Sigrid Nunez. With her novels The Friend (winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction) and What Are You Going Through, New York–based author Sigrid Nunez has supplied the extraordinarily rich source material for not one, but two films in the NYFF62 lineup: Scott McGehee and David Siegel's Spotlight standout The Friend, starring Naomi Watts as a writer mourning the complicated loss of a beloved mentor; and Pedro Almodóvar's Centerpiece selection The Room Next Door, which follows another writer (Julianne Moore) as she reconnects with a friend from her past (Tilda Swinton) who approaches her with an unusual request. We were honored to welcome Nunez for a special conversation about her prismatic literary meditations on grief, friendship, and the passage of time; the experience of seeing her creative work adapted into other mediums; and cinema's alchemical capacity to both translate and transform a novel's meaning. This conversation was moderated by A.O. Scott, critic at large for The New York Times Book Review. A New York Times Critic's Pick, Pedro Almodovar's The Room Next Door is now playing at FLC.

God lytting!

Anna and Annie discuss the inaugural Women's Prize for Non-Fiction longlist, including Anna Funder's Wifedom. Our book of the week is THE VULNERABLES by Sigrid Nunez. This is the third in a loose trilogy after THE FRIEND and WHAT ARE YOU GOING THROUGH. A writer, a college drop-out and a talking parrot share an apartment in New York during the Covid pandemic.  This is subtler than the first two books but we loved the mix of story and Nunez's reflections on life and writing.   Coming up: our Crime reading recommendations. First, NPR's Leila Fadel spoke with Sigrid Nunez about The Vulnerables, which follows a woman, a parrot, and a Gen Z college student unexpectedly taking care of another during lockdown in New York. Then, Michael Cunningham tells NPR's Scott Simon about Day, which chronicles three days — spread out over three years — in the life of a Brooklyn family, and how isolation and companionship changes them over that time.

Welcome to our 8th Annual Bookish Holiday Gifts episode! The first time we recommended holiday gift ideas was on Episode 2, way back in December 2016. Sigrid Nunez won the 2018 National Book Award for The Friend, a ''beautiful'' novel ''crammed with a world of insight into death, grief, art, and love'' (The Wall Street Journal) in which a woman is forced to adopt her deceased best friend's Great Dane. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Berlin Prize, the Rome Prize in Literature, and a Whiting Award, she is also the author of What Are You Going Through, Salvation City, The Last of Her Kind, A Feather on the Breath of God, and Sempre Susan, a memoir about her friend and mentor Susan Sontag. In The Vulnerables, Nunez offers a comic and elegiac study of a solitary female narrator who ponders questions of connection in our time of collective angst. A ''slim jewel of a novel'' that is ''what fiction should be'' (The New York Times Book Review), Henry Hoke's Open Throat follows the surreal Hollywood Hills wanderings of a lonely and inadvertently wise mountain lion grappling with desperate hunger, the intricacies of gender, and the challenges of urban living. Hoke is also the author of four other books, including a memoir titled Sticker, and his play At Sundown premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His other work has appeared in No Tokens, Triangle House, Electric Literature, Carve, and the flash noir anthology Tiny Crimes. Co-creator of the Los Angeles-based Enter>text performance series and the humor editor at The Offing, he has taught at CalArts and the UVA Young Writers Workshop.
