It's a big week. We love you and hope you're taking care of yourself, whatever that may look like. Kris gives an update on her visit to P-Town for Women's Week and her plans for Friendsgiving. Tara talks ice queens and participating in The Lesbian Review's event. As always, we have a bunch of recommendations. We hope they give the distraction you need from the world outside. Official Recommendations From Kris: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) This week, Kris caves to peer pressure in the best possible way to watch the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire. It's the story of a young painter who masquerades as a walking companion to capture a reluctant subject in her last days of freedom before marriage. The ending isn't happy, but it is, according to Kris, "satisfying," because this movie has a different take on love. From Tara: Most Wonderful by Georgia Clark This week, Tara recommends the holiday romance, Most Wonderful by Georgia Clark. It follows a trio of siblings as they find love (and themselves) when they head home for the holidays. One is a showrunner who has fallen for their star. Another is a complete disaster trying to… not disaster. And the third has recently discovered their lifelong friend is super hot. Tara loved it. Great vibes all around. Hey Magic Makers! Let's keep Pride month going by hearing more stories from our friends in the queer community! Today I am speaking with Georgia Clark, a novelist, performer, screenwriter, and the host and founder of a popular storytelling night called Generation Women in New York City. She has an amazing queer romance novel called “Island Time” coming out tomorrow, June 14, 2022. Georgia specializes in romcom, which in my personal opinion, is a very under-appreciated genre! This conversation is all about how to make a living AND a life as a creative entrepreneur, the rollercoaster it can be to work on a long term project, like a novel, the journey she has been on, and all of the ways we can make money to support our art, rather than putting pressure on our art to make us money. So while you are listening, ask yourself, why are you drawn to a certain creative pursuit? Usually it is about more than just a job. Usually it is about seeking happiness and passion. In this day and age, we often only see people's highlight reels on life, not the other things they do to live and work. Creative people often cobble together things that attract money to fund their art! At the time of this recording, Georgia's wife was very pregnant with the human who is now their daughter, and though Georgia has not yet had to contend with symptoms or behaviors related to her own hormonal changes, she had some amusing things to say about pregnancy hormones. Join us for a very special Pride Month Pod where we manage to discuss boners, boobs, and babies, AND introduce our new favorite literary object: The Hazardous Footstool. ***CONTEST ALERT***To win a free copy of Island Time, leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. Aussie author makes it big in NYC. Coming to New York naive and unprepared, Georgia Clark still managed to find her way to a successful career in writing. This novelist has an undeniable spirit and tenacity which combined with resilience has enabled her to find her literary voice, her life partner and most of all, happiness and purpose.Georgia experienced what must be a writer's worst nightmare, being told that a manuscript that she had written would not sell the way it was. She turned the tables on the criticism and rewrote the book into what is today, a big commercial bestseller, It Had to Be You, a rom-com novel that made us (Peri) cry and fall in love with Georgia Clark's strong, female voice. For the past twenty years, Liv and Eliot Goldenhorn have run In Love in New York, Brooklyn's beloved wedding-planning business. When Eliot dies unexpectedly, he even more unexpectedly leaves half of the business to his younger, blonder girlfriend, Savannah. Liv and Savannah are not a match made in heaven, to say the least. But what starts as a personal and professional nightmare transforms into something even savvy, cynical Liv Goldenhorn couldn't begin to imagine. It Had to Be You cleverly unites Liv, Savannah, and couples as diverse and unique as New York City itself, in a joyous Love-Actually-style braided narrative. The result is a smart, modern, utterly charming love story that truly speaks to our times. Georgia Clark is a novelist and performer. She's the author of It Had To Be You, The Regulars, The Bucket List, and others. She's also the host and founder of the popular storytelling night, Generation Women. A native Australian, she lives in Brooklyn with her hot wife and a fridge full of cheese. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

So, we have been through things together, and lived together, and knew each other pretty well. But you're still constantly learning how to live with another human being and make them happy, and make you happy, and make you happy as a couple. Which are three totally different things, and completely different agendas. And to truly be able to do that is tough, you know?” - Georgia “In our family dynamics, we are generally raised for autonomy or raised for loyalty. And if you're raised for autonomy, then the values are go out into the world, go and see it, do it on your own, independence is important. What are your ideas, as opposed to the community's ideas? That's being raised for autonomy. Or you're raised for loyalty which means family is first, family is everything.” - Georgia “It's sort of an interesting part of the book, that the central relationship, of what is certainly a romantic comedy, is not a sexual relationship. The more we travel, the more we find that home becomes more illusive. Home is a place we crave in our most harrowing moments and forget in the spontaneous bliss. But, the farther we travel from it, the more foreign it seems. It slowly becomes but a dream to us. Our lives consist of backpacks and tickets instead of a bed and a mortgage. Many of us left because home doesn’t provide all that it could for us. Others find gratitude in the homes they were raised in. Travelers begin to define home differently. It may no longer be a physical place, but a person, a landmass, a journal. We have to leave in order to find what needs to be discovered about ourselves or the world. Some of us don’t return. Others do. For those to choose to come back, they reinvest in their communities differently. They bring new ideas to old places. They teach those who don’t have as easy access to alternative ideas or traveling. And if we do choose to return, it won’t feel the same as when we left. We are more sensitive now to the pain, the triggers, the traumas of a past life. But those who have truly grown in their travels know how to overcome, to throw away the snake skin of their metamorphosis and begin to make home better. Because they know home has been within them all along. Featured Guests: Jeffery Enns, Georgia Clark, Cassandra Bianco, Laura Bronner

Didn't someone talk about that already? Yes! I talk a bit at the top of the show about why I think it's important to hear about artworks from multiple perspectives. Sounds extremely interesting, doesn't it? Well... IT IS!! Links: Georgia Clark Doug Anthony Allstars Buffy The Vampire Slayer Hustlers The Sound Inside

In this episode Debbie talks about the most surprising result of her gap year: she created, produces and directs Island Women Speak, a popular multi-generational women's storytelling event in Stonington, Maine, the small coastal town she now calls home. She calls it a gap year accomplishment because it's a new and unexpected thing she never imagined herself doing. She has coached and edited nonfiction writers for years but this was her first foray into coaching storytellers and producing a live stage event. To her surprise and delight, the recurring event has been a resounding success. The audience in this remote coastal community yearns for truth and authenticity, especially from performers everyone knows. Island Women Speak, inspired by The Moth, premiered at the Stonington Opera House in January 2018. Since then, twenty-two women, ages 20 to 95, have each performed five-minute stories that they've written and rehearsed. The stories were on themes ranging from falling in love and leaving home to coming out as gay and dealing with depression and anxiety. The most recent Island Women Speak, in January 2019, focused on the topic of standing up and speaking out. The theme was not meant to be overtly political but it was fitting following a year of #METOO revelations and coming on the heels of the record number of women elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In the opening of the podcast, you will hear Lorraine Knowlton, 85, a lifelong resident of Deer Isle, performing her story about overcoming extreme shyness as a child. Debbie also interviews storyteller Amanda Larrabee about the impact of the event and why it has been so powerful for both performers and the audience. Georgia Clark, author of THE BUCKET LIST and three other novels, writes about "feisty, flawed, funny women." In this book, she writes about a 25-year-old woman in NYC who is diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene mutation and has to decide whether to get a double mastectomy. To make the decision, she creates a "boob bucket list."

The lovely Georgia Clark (The Bucket List) joins Sharon this episode, and begins with remembrances of her move to NYC right in the thick of the Great Recession. The two then discuss Georgia's work as curator and producer of the Generation Women storytelling show, before Georgia admits there was a time she created a fake band...and then had to create a band to match the identity. A tease for her new book follows, and they then wind up deciding one must finish something as a way to court the muses.

Welcome to the Totally Normal podcast where getting drunk and talking about books is totally normal. For Boozy Book Club our September books were Gayle Forman’s Leave Me and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. One was the adult debut of one of our favorite Young Adult authors, and one is the highly acclaimed fantasy novel that we are super anticipating coming to our TV screens and laptops on Starz next year. Amy and Beth were joined by Hangout newbies: Courtney and Danelle. We had a great time trying to figure out why we just couldn’t relate to Gayle Forman’s protagonist Maribeth and why American Gods is totally and completely indelible. We hope you enjoy this Boozy Book Club and join us for the month of October as we read Melina Marchetta’s newest Tell the Truth Shame the Devil and The Regulars by Georgia Clark. We will see you Tuesday, Nov 1st at 10pm EST for another live Hangout. View us here LIVE! Join our Book Club on Goodreads!
