Farmers flooded earlier in the year are still waiting eight months on for government grants they have claimed to clear up.It's a challenging harvest for farmers across the country because of the wet weather, and yields are down. The National Farmers Union says as many as half of farmers have been affected by fly-tipping, which is a blight on the countryside and can cost farmers a lot of money to clear up.Presented by Caz GrahamProduced by Alun Beach

Fly-tipping can be a big issue for farmers who have to pay to clear any rubbish left on their land. Now, the Country Land and Business Association says there should be a "National Fly-Tipping Tsar" to take charge of the fight against the problem. The Government has recently announced new grants for councils and bigger fines for fly-tippers - will it be enough? As we've reported on this programme, sheep have been getting a bit of stick recently - accused of damaging habitats through overgrazing. But in Suffolk, the National Trust is using a small flock of rare breed sheep to improve habitats for wading birds at Orford Ness Nature Reserve. And we hear from a Welsh beef farmer who has been seeing how it's done in Chile. Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

A tsunami of fly tipping has been sweeping the North, with a spike in cases during the pandemic accelerating a trend that has been creeping up for years. Join @neilcolbourne and @vincetracy with stories you might have missed with Yorkies and Fly-Tipping etc....Eclair Surf has died after sustaining a traumatic head injury in Saturday's Grand National, becoming the fourth horse to pass away at this year's Festival. A woman who is struggling in her new job at a care home has sparked a discussion on what it's like to quit a job you've barely even started. One in five workers say they would struggle to cope financially if they were summoned for mandatory jury service, with a two-week trial potentially leaving the average juror £260 out of pocket. A Daily Mail investigation has found that some homes have been rejected as 'unsafe' because of stairs designed without a bannister and a one-inch step deemed a 'trip hazard'. Local authorities checking the homes of those wanting to host refugees have been accused of 'being like something out of Monty Python'. It is perhaps the most brazen monument to criminality in Scotland. Offenders from far and wide arrive at it like reprobate pilgrims to some grotesque shrine and leave their offerings there before disappearing into the night. A mother-of-two has described how she feared for her life when her family home was swarmed by armed police officers to take away her beloved Yorkshire terrier. Hayley Scanlan, a 28-year-old from Huntington, Cambridgeshire, was shocked to find nine police officers at her door, demanding her dog Bobby is handed over to them after the former owner wanted him back. Top secret documents left at a bus stop by a hapless civil servant contained the locations of British special forces in Kabul and endangered the lives of elite US soldiers, it has emerged. A theatre company has sparked fury by staging a show featuring naked bodies that explores 'love, sexuality and sexual pleasure' aimed at children as young as five. The Family Sex Show's producers boast it's a performance for families about sex and relationships - with parents encouraged to bring their children along.
This week we bring you a podcast on rural crime that will provide insights on the issue of fly tipping, which has soared to a record-high over the past 12 months. Defra's fly tipping statistics, released on Wednesday 8 December, make for grim reading, showing a 16% increase across England with over 1.1 million incidents being recorded between April 2020 and March 2021. The reality is much worse as these statistics only cover incidents on public land. Alison Provis, the CLA's national lead for fly-tipping and Regional Surveyor in the East, shares with us how it is affecting CLA members, what is behind the increase and what the CLA is doing to tackle the issue. We are also joined by Duncan Jones from Hertfordshire Waste Partnership and Chair of the Hertfordshire Fly Tipping Group. Duncan will tell us more about what industry-led action is being taken and what more needs to be done to stop incidents increasing further. Find out more by visiting the CLA website -https://www.cla.org.uk/news/new-figures-show-the-severe-damage-of-fly-tipping-in-england/Follow the link below to read the fly tipping statistics for England 2020-2021 in full –https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/fly-tipping-in-england/fly-tipping-statistics-for-england-2020-to-2021Read the CLA's 5-point action plan to tackle fly tipping. This week Caz Graham looks at trawler fishing and how it's being affected by Brexit and the Coronavirus pandemic. It's not been an easy 12 months for the fishing industry, the tonnage of fish being landed has decreased - with vessels staying in the harbour, rather than risking catching fish they cannot sell. The owner of one of the UK's biggest trawlers, the Kirkella, tells us it may have to stop fishing altogether if the Government fails to reach a new agreement on quotas. Meanwhile the Marine Management Organisation, the Government body that regulates the seas around England, is consulting on banning bottom trawling in four marine protected areas. The charity, Keep Britain Tidy tells us that the system for waste disposal in the UK is "broken", as Government figures for England show a 2% increase in fly-tipping in the year to March 2020. Landowners and farmers say it's just the tip of the iceberg, as the figures only include incidents on council-owned land. One estate manager tells the programme he is spending hundreds of pounds cleaning up fly-tipped rubbish every week. We also listen in on the National Farmers Union annual conference, which took place online this year. For the first time in 13 years, a leader of the Labour party gave an address. Sir Keir Starmer set out his support for British farming, promising a review of the parties policies. And from Kenya we hear how farmers dealing with swarms of locusts are now trying to trap and kill the insects which have been destroying crops for the past year in order to turn them into animal feed. Presented by Caz Graham Produced in Bristol by Natalie Donovan
Official Government figures suggest fly-tipping in England in on the increase - there has been a 2% rise in the number of incidents on Council-owned land. Farmers and landowners say as those figures only include what happens on public land they hide the true extent of the problem, and say tougher penalties are needed as a deterrent. At this week's National Farmers Union annual conference, the International Trade Secretary told delegates she wants to get British food to the top of the global food menu - saying they should be looking East for new trade opportunities. Anna Hill spoke to Liz Truss after her speech, and asked her about concerns raised by The All Party Parliamentary Group for Trade and Export Promotion, which has said the government should ‘overhaul its secretive approach to post-Brexit trade negotiations’. As we continue our week looking at the trawling industry, we look at how dredging for scallops can be made more sustainable. Plus we discuss what a recent ban on Pulse Trawling might mean for scientific fishing innovation. Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced in Bristol by Natalie Donovan
It's a disgusting and expensive mess. Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish and a costly scourge. Local authorities dealt with over a million incidents of fly tipping in England alone last year. But Elliott Lancaster is on a clean-up mission. Utter Rubbish is a social enterprise he created while studying at Keele University (he gained a first-class degree in accounting and finance and is now taking a PhD there).Elliott set up Utter Rubbish to communicate more effectively about what can and can't be recycled. He wanted to address the problem of contamination within waste materials which could and should be recycled. And during his research he twigged on to just how much fly tipping occurs. Now, Elliott's app – which is already being piloted by a local authority – helps councils save money while they address the issue of fly tipping.Elliott describes how the app works, how Utter Rubbish seeks to change perceptions and behaviour, its impact, and its plans to scale nationally in this episode of the Making an Impact Podcast.

She sizes up Fi and Jane and the three of them play godchildren top trumps. Before Susannah arrives there's a sweet special delivery and an accusation about Fi's mother.
Fly tipping mountains are getting bigger, official figures show, as the cost of clearing them up has risen by nearly a quarter. The number of waste piles discovered which are bigger than the capacity of a lorry, classed as "multi load incidents", rose by 43 per cent over the past year, data published by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs showed. It comes as local councils are starting to withdraw recycling services as some types of plastic are becoming too expensive to process, potentially leading to more excess household waste being illegally dumped. What do we do about it?
